Because its not him.... Its Paul Martinez, and the whole thing was a fucking mess, Page was junked out, Collins was pissed and luckily had a second drummer 'as he does often' Tony Thompson who carried him, can even see parts where Phil isnt playing and Robert plant was way off his game. It was a fucking mess that seriously damaged the reputation of one of the worlds biggest bands and they all blame each other for it to this day...... They all fucked up and we all saw it.... LIVE

What a lot people forget …. Nobody thought Led Zeppelin would happen again. Bands were coming together left and right to be apart of this event that day. I skipped high school class that day with friends to watch this once in a lifetime show. As the rumor built during the day that this was going to happen, nobody gave a crap how good it was on stage. The fact it happened was what made it a special event.

    • @lindamoore6163

Oh I must respectfully disagree! Everyone who loved Zep was expecting a superb performance but got majorly let down. Plants voice was off and did Jimmy even tune 🎵 his guitar 🎸? Phil was all wrong ( in my opinion) . But, in 2007 with Jason on 🥁 drums had the groove just right and they shined. A happy ending 😊 Page, Plant and Jones brought their “A” game too.

It wasn't their best show. But they didn't have anything to prove. They already done did that in the 70's. Plus it's only partial Zeppelin, and Page was still strung out on heroine. Plant, probably a qualeude or 3. It probably sounded great to them. Haha!

    • @philsurtees
      @philsurtees 6 лет назад +29

@@Peachie4011 Yeah but it was a real bummer on the day because they had been one of the top live acts - they basically started arena rock - and everyone had been waiting all day, for something we thought would never happen, but then it turned out like this. Then for years we all remembered them for this horrible day, not for the giants they had been. That's why O2 was so important; they proved that they still had it, and now we all remember them as giants again. I'm kind of glad they never went on tour after that, because their reputation is secure now.
P.S. I think you'll find Plant was clean by the end of the 80's; which is why 'In Through The Out Door' is pretty much a Robert Plant and John Paul Jones album; because those two were clean, while Bonzo was a raging alcoholic and Jimmy Page was a heroin addict.

And those late 80's shows were awful too. That's why they did the "reunion" in 2007 because Plant said they didn't want to be remembered that way, so they rehearsed like crazy & did the 2007 reunion which was good because they took it seriously.
I know several old heads who saw them in the 70's & they all said that LZ were one of the sloppiest live bands they ever seen. Angus Young said out of all his contemporaries, LZ were the worst live band of them all.
John Paul Jones said that during the 70's Page, Bonham & Plant were "more interested in the sex & drugs as opposed to the rock & roll." He said he was an outcast in their social scene because he wasn't into doing coke & booze all night & molesting pubescent girls like his band mates. He said they were always too hung over to rehearse & that's why the shows were crap.
The reason they got it right in 2007 was because Page & Plant finally grew up & took practice & rehearsal seriously & also for the fact that they are now creepy old men & too old to be molesting underage girls.

Haydn Evans Not to defend LZ for this, but there is a difference. Queen were active in the early 80's and were touring The Works into '85. Led Zep hadn't played live for 5 years and had lost their original drummer. Doesn't excuse them for not rehearsing though (which Queen did)

She was so mesmerized, she refused to approach him..
So I went over and said, my girlfriend is so afraid to meet you.
And he said, well wheel her on over then.

For Gen X this was huge. The only chance we got, as teenagers, to see Zep was in 1980 - and then Bonham died. And they said, "forget it!" - they weren't touring again, ever.
So - five years later, it was huge that they were gonna do a live set - with Peak Phil Collins, no less. It was really a testament to how big an event Live Aid really was.

Collins wasn't even told they got another drummer on stage. He said he would have walked out of the situation if he could. Plant lost his voice, Page was stoned out of his mind and couldn't play. The other drummer ignored Collins. Phil couldn't hear anything but the other drums, so he had to follow and do his best. The disarter wasn't the fault of Phil Collins. It was skipping the rehearsing and the drugs (especially Page's drug use). Most importantly, it was the fact that in the past John Bonham patched up the mistakes of Plant and Page, with his impecable sense of rhythm, and that was the key of success for Led Z. Zeppelin died with Bonham. John Paul Jones was sharp as always, the most professional musician, but sadly, the most ignored member of the band.

It was all the ridiculous narrative that formed where Phil Collins had to play multiple venues with as many bands as he could. Jimmy wasn't ever happy with Collins being involved, but they had a chat beforehand about the numbers - especially the intro to Rock and Roll and he agreed to go along with it. Jimmy explained the tricky timing of the famous false start intro and Collins agreed with everything he said (and presumably made exactly the same mistake everyone makes when they cover that song). They also weren't using their own techs and Jimmy just trusted that they would be looked after by people who actually knew what they were doing. They came on to the intro of Rock and Roll and it seemed that Collins really had no idea how the tricky intro even went and he completely murdered it. All of Jimmy's guitars were out of tune, it was ridiculous. Jimmy always prided himself on the sublime quality of Led Zeppelin and John Bonham and I don't think he ever forgot or forgave Collins for that.

I just finished reading Phil Collins book and he talks a lot about this particular show. Robert Plant asked him to do something with just the two of them. And then he said we'll bring Jimmy along. And then he said John Paul Jones will be joining as well. And then Phil found out they were practicing with another drummer while he was stuck in England. By the time he flew over on the Concorde he said Jimmy was already out of his mind and the environment was somewhat toxic. He really didn't even want to go on but they had made such a big deal about him flying over on the Concorde that he had to do it. And some parts during this show he even air drummed where he didn't want to compete with the other drummer who had practiced and was not thrilled that Phil was the second drummer. Overall Phil felt the performance was pretty much a train wreck.

Nice to see a lot of folks coming out in support of Phil Collins on this one. There's no point in me repeating what's already been said, Plant's sore throat, Jimmy being sky high and also over improvising way too much. Also the sound system is atrocious! I've honestly never understood why Collins takes the blame for this.

From Phil Collins’ autobiography, Not Dead Yet:
I know the wheels are falling off from early on in the set. I can’t hear Robert clearly from where I’m sat, but I can hear enough to know that he’s not on top of his game. Ditto Jimmy. I don’t remember playing Rock And Roll, but obviously I did. But I do remember an awful lot of time where I can hear what Robert decries as ‘knitting’: fancy drumming. And if you can find the footage (the Zeppelin camp have done their best to scrub it from the history books), you can see me miming, playing the air, getting out of the way lest there be a trainwreck. If I’d known it was to be a two-drummer band, I would have removed myself from proceedings long before I got anywhere near Philadelphia.
Onstage I don’t take my eyes off Tony Thompson. I’m glued to him. I’m having to follow - he’s taking the heavy-handed lead and has opted to ignore all my advice. Putting myself in his shoes, he’s probably thinking, “This is the beginning of a new career. John Bonham isn’t around any more. They’re gonna want someone. This could be the start of a Led Zeppelin reunion. And I don’t need this English fuck in my way.”
I’m not judging him, god rest his soul. Thompson was a fantastic drummer. but it was very uncomfortable, and if I could have left that stage, I would have left, halfway through Stairway... if not earlier. But imagine the coverage of that? Walking off during The Second Coming? Who the fuck does Collins think he is? Geldof really would have had something to swear about.
After what seems like an eternity, we finish. I’m thinking, ‘My god, that was awful. The sooner this is over, the better.”
There’s one more moment of horror. backstage, MTV VJ Alan Hunter is waiting to interview Led Zeppelin. The sweat still damp on our brows, the bad taste still ripe in my mouth, we gather outside the caravan of doom. Back in the studio, he’s teed up the interview with the words: “On a day for reunions, probably the most anticipated is the Led Zeppelin reunion. Now right here, an interview with the reunited members…”
Hunter starts asking questions, and it’s quickly obvious that nobody is taking him seriously. Robert and Jimmy are being difficult, giving vague, cocky answers to straight questions; John Paul Jones is still quieter than a church mouse. I feel sorry for Hunter. He’s live on air, a worldwide audience is waiting with bated breath, and these guys are making him look like an idiot.
In a shutting stable door after the horse has bolted style, Led Zeppelin won’t let the performance be included on the official Live Aid DVD. Because, of course, they were ashamed of it. And I find that I am usually the one blamed for it. It couldn’t possibly be the holy Led Zep who were at fault. It was that geezer who came over on Concorde who wasn’t rehearsed. He was the culprit. That show-off.

1st of all. It was the sound at this entire concert that caused the bad recording of this. Go back and watch any of the Live Aid concert and you realize it wasn't that the bands suck. It was the quality of the sound and certainly the recording equipment. I was glued to my parents tv for most of it. Poor Phil catches grief for his performance and that's mainly because the camera guy kept panning to just him and not the other drummer who was bashing the crap outta the 1st song. You gotta give them all credit for even being there and realize how hard it was for them to try and do this on a moments notice. Led Zeppelin hadn't played together in over 5 years up until this moment. Im still very grateful for this and had they chosen to reconcile, I would've been 1st in line for tickets and buying all the following albums. Long Live Led Zeppelin, Rock n Roll will never die. ❤

They also tried to blame Phil Collins for this shambolic performance....NO WAY was Collins to blame. Page stated that Collins just sat there banging on the drums with a silly grin on his face. I, m surprised he noticed anything at all with him being in the company of his best friend :-

They're all to blame for not rehearsing enough. Including Collins, you can see he doesn't even know the material.

Yeah I despise Paige for that. He thought no one would see it so he could blame Collins, who is obviously blameless, and all the fans would swallow that horseshit, whereas Paige is off his head and crap. And the tape is OUT THERE.

@@salome5055 Phil blameless? He simply doesn't know the songs. The other drummer is actually pretty good, Phil stops playing because he doesn't know the song. Embarrassing. Page horrible too, of course. But Phil CERTAINLY was to blame, more than Page, because Page does somehow has a "right" to be bad, it's his band, his music. Phil, as a guest performer, is OBLIGED to do his best performance. He is to blame. A lot. He clowns completely.

@@MeBallerman Oh dear. Whatever you think of Collins he's a professional and he was sober. I watched him hold it together competently and he said he was trying not to make things worse by watching the other drummer and sometimes just not drumming. Paige was off his FACE, his time keeping was horrible and he was out of tune, why would I believe HIM? And most FANS of Led Zep can see the obvious you know, Paige never has some sort of right to SUCK THAT HARD and blame someone else, it just makes him a bit of a knob I'm afraid.

@@salome5055 I AGREE with everything you say about Page - but Phil is horribly bad, and bears 50% of the guilt for the train wreck. He even admitted it himself; his "rehearsal" was listening to Stairway on the plane.
It is the other drummer who keeps the rythm, Phil is hopeless here, of course, he never played the songs before in his life. Very naughty of him. And naughty of Page to be drunk/high/smashed/whatever.
Plant is also a fool - how on Earth did he think it would be a good idea with 2 drummers? Led Zep isn't suited for double drum at all. Maybe Stairway would sound good with 2 very well rehearsed drummers, but Whole Lotta and Rock'nroll are not. Zeppelin's music is generally unsuited for 2 drummers.
IF only the Thompson guy had drummed alone - it would've sounded exactly 50% less horrible. It wouldn't cure Page's clowning, but it would surely cure Phil's ditto.
What if Phil had drummed alone? Well, I guess the trainwreck would've fallen off the mountain completely lol.
