Thank you. I'm one of the inmates that helped save Deputy Hobbs. I finally got released a month ago. I'm glad to be free and honored to be labeled as a HERO. I'm doing very well. I could spend 30min telling you everything positive I've accomplished since my release and less than 30 seconds telling you the negative. So. I'm doing AWESOME and hope Deputy Hobbs is still doing good. Thank you, Terry Loveless

Most inmates aren’t bad people, most just picked the wrong crowd and are easily influenced people, who make wrong choices, doesn’t make them bad. Surround most of those people around only good people on the outside and I guarantee, most of them will stay good people.

I was a prison officer and I can attest that most of the time they aren't bad people, they made bad decisions. Their background can be wildly varied, but the main thing to remember is to treat them as people and respect them. I stood up in front of the governor a few times to testify on an inmates behalf if I felt they were being unfairly accused of rule breaking, or they were peripheral to an incident. I've been caught in a couple of riots and had inmates let me out of the area so I didn't get hurt because "He's one of the good ones guys". It wasn't my place to judge them on their crimes, that was done by the courts. Treat people with respect and fairness and you never know when it will be returned to you when you need it most.

Only something like 25% of people incarcerated are in jail for violent crimes. The other 75% are in for things like property crimes, drug offenses and "public offenses" like DUI or public drunkenness or public disturbance and things like that. The stats are different for prison inmates- I think about half violent offenses and half nonviolent- but that makes sense as sentences will be higher (so outside of jail timefranes) for many violent offenses.

A few years later, one of the inmates who had been a regular part of our services needed a place to stay.. he became my roommate in my condo for 3 years and is still a close friend till this day! My husband worked in corrections as an officer for five years. He always treated the inmates with respect whereas some didn’t. One night he was in the gym and told an inmate to stop throwing the ball so that it would go up and hit the lights. All my husband had for protection was a radio and a flashlight. That inmate came over and got all up on him threatening him. The other inmates came and formed a circle around him until help came. They told him they always had his back.
The other thing was, we’d be in Walmart or somewhere and person that had been in there, more than a few times, would see us and start talking to him and telling him how they were doing and thanked him for what a good guy he was to them.
I’m proud of him. He’s a really good guy with a good heart.

@@troywright359 A woman raping a man is not as bad as a man raping a woman, even though the woman could benefit more from raping a man, because society just says so. More so, a woman can claim anyone has raped her, and he (or she, if applicable) must go to court, and even if he wasn't guilty, his reputation is forever scarred. I think that this world isn't fair, and it's fine that way. A single person's opinions do not shape the others, it's the other way around. Quite fascinating how a powerful person could also be a rapist, and simply eliminate the evidence, and leave freely, meanwhile a poor man cannot do anything, and must lose his reputation, his self-worth even, and must prove himself innocent.

The three men, during the interview, seemed quietly happy - rightly - that, for once, they were in the spotlight for something good they did, not for the bad thing they did that made them inmates, the bad thing they did that they looks at them in the face each time they wake up. I was especially touched with what the last man said. In the photo, he had his chest out and and a small smile, maybe he was thinking about his family seeing this in the news, his mother his daughter, seeing something good in him. Whatever his thoughts were, I'm happy to have come across a part of his story.

Something that amazes me so much: The prison guard trusted the inmates so much, he let them out and knew they'd help him.
Edit, for a little more clarity:
My point was, respect goes a long way. If the same guard had treated them like animals, they'd have left him to die, that's all there was to it. Trying to escape doesn't really make sense either and I wasn't implying that :)

@@skipper2144 that's interesting because psychopathy and sociopathy often result in self destructive and high risk behaviors and only rarely cause people to murder or torture or engage in evil acts. in fact millions of psychopathic and sociopaths individuals live normal lives working decent jobs and contributing heavily to society.
My comment was that "most" prisoners are not evil they are victims of circumstances such as social disorganization, structural forces of societal stratification and labels meant to stigmatize in society rather than to encourage re-integrative shaming and reformative processes to bring these people back into the real world.

@@itsethan1606 Funny how you care about them but they could never feel the same about you. Just because daddy was a sociopath dosen't mean you have to find a way to justify his actions. It's common knowledge most aren't violent but all get though life with lieing and manipulation they are sick and twisted individuals who hurt thousands along the way. It's true they contribute to society many of the most successful people on earth quality as one of these types although, contributions are all selfish/a way of manipulating public perception of themselves for their own benefit. I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and say it's possible that some may wish to feel like the rest of us but are simply incapable. Though, IME none of them could care less about being normal but I'm no psychiatrist and am ignorant in the matter.

People think just because they are inmates they are horrible people. Look at these guys, beautiful.
Edit: Okay, everyone is replying “They might all be in for murder” and that they wanted to get out of jail but I’m not saying every inmate is amazing or bad. I mean you commit the crime, do the time but some of these people could’ve been wrongly accused and did nothing. These inmates have shown that just because they are inmates they still have room for the superhero side of them.

youd be amazed how much the respect means to people who are locked up. First of all its a place where respect is the #1 currency so to speak , the more respect you give the more you get. You dont disrespect another man in there. When i was locked the inmates who treated us like humans really stood out, ive always supported law enforcement and even wanted to be a LEO until i was arrested for making the wrong choices. Unfortunately i learned majority are what i call robo cops, they treat you like you just killed a baby or something. But then there was the ones who didnt act like we were anything less then them, those are the ones who wed stick our neck out to help if the situation arose. A guy i was locked with actually helped a cop (we have sheriffs guard our jails) when he was jumped on out of nowhere by some jcat inmate. Cause of that he got out months early, they actually tell us that if we help a guard in a way like that well get a time cut. The unfortunate thing though is that most the other inmates will not allow you to do that, in california we have some serious politics and you cant even go ask a guard for toilet paper without another person going with you. Luckily the guy who helped was bigger then me andim 6'4 220+ so no one was really gonna buck up and try to do anything to the guy cause they know theyd get rocked.
