Hey as someone who lives very far from the us, from the american zero waste brands because I live in Israel and since the UK is relatively close to israel I am interested in the best uk zero waste brands or maybe a company that sells sells like aton of the things I would need from different brands, like Earthhero, can I have some reccemondations?? Tnx😊
I'm so happy you're talking about the production of plastic, activism and the fact not ALL plastic is bad!! I've been sooo guilty of this too but I've started looking into it more and educate myself.
In light of the recent racism events in the U.S. (I’m from Virginia), I am thankful to you for bringing up the whole story regarding people of color and brown and black communities being the most negatively affected by pollution. I too will make my focus, this July, on understanding the intricate relationship between capitalism, accountability and racism in regard to environmental pollution. Cheers!
You could try making a sourdough starter! That way you won’t have to buy packets of yeast. You’ll just have to feed it some water and flour every week and you’ll have a whole jar of yeast ready to use :)
I find you reusing regular baggies VERY refreshing. I mean not all low wasters, myself included, can afford those kind of high tier products. Seeing more low cost swapouts is very helpful, even if they are the "In-thing" on instagram or internet atm. Teaching others how just to reuse what they have around their houses rather than dump a bunch of money into buying the newest in-thing for Low waste sustainability, goes a long way to getting others to join the lifestyle/movement.
Amazing as always Immy! So interested by your mention of 'vilifying' plastic and how we must see the WHOLE picture on our journey. For me as a low waster I shop sustainably, buy package free & am always looking to avoid plastic. But my partner has diabetes and as such we use tiny plastic packed needles, plastic insulin pens and disposable glucose checkers. This is ESSENTIAL plastic and I am so grateful for it otherwise he wouldn't be the happy healthy man I love ❤ all in moderation and all with consideration ✌🏻 THANKS Immy love as always xx
I would love to get back to England again, especially to London. It's been 5 years since I was there. My ancestry is nearly 70% from the British Isles and connected with many historical figures. So it was so exciting being there! I watch your videos religiously and love them for the sustainability information as well as enjoying the London background when you are on outings. My goal is to combine the two factors. To cut down on spending and waste so I can save enough for another trip to beloved London! Thank you for all you do!👍😍
Lately I've been feeling SO sluggish and waking up wayyy later than I'd like, but whenever I find myself feeling that way and seeing you upload a new video, I find my mood has turned around and I feel more motivated to make the most of my day! Lockdown has been hitting hard this week, so this video was an absolute gift ♡ thank you, Immy!
Yes to the whole story of plastic!! I'm really interested to hear about the impact on communities etc. I just followed a super interesting course on (bio)plastics, and I just wanted to mention that bioplastics can have 2 meanings: biobased (so from renewable resources like agricultural waste) or biodegradable/compostable. But those are not always the same, so plastic can be biobased but not biodegradable or the other way round, and I feel like there is a lot of misconception about this, so I wanted to let you all know :)
Just finished my laundry and hung it up to dry on my outdoor clothesline that my friend installed for me. It's just like the one my mom and grandma had, with metal posts and 5 sturdy lines. As I fill each line, I remember them fondly and can picture them doing the same task. So I crank up my bluegrass music and let the AZ sun and desert breeze dry my clothes :)
I so appreciate your channel! Thank you for sharing information AND sharing your own growth in this lifestyle. I love your efforts to be more intersectional and nuanced - it’s giving me a lot to think about in my own life!
Girl, that is pretty dang awesome the way you just toss your bike over your shoulder and scoot down the stairs fleet of foot... it’s gotta be more than just the shoes!! Also, this sewing teacher wants to work in the Grunbag atelier when she grows up. ‘Atelier’ sounds so artistic and creative...where can I sign up?
I used to hang up everything down to my underwear and socks in college because it cost so much to wash and dry clothes, my roommate was a good sport about my socks and undergarments hanging from every piece of furniture in our dorm haha
Yes! I have a friend who is a plastics engineer, and they make crashcarts for hospitals. It is great to use the hard plastic that is lightweight so it can easily move fast when needed. I believe that plastics should have an actual plan for its full life cycle rather than it being dumped places because humans don't want/know how to dispose of properly.
If you like Isabel Allende please read Inés del Alma mía (Inés of my soul or something like that) and of course La casa de los Espíritus (house of Spiritis) two of my favorite books ever
A tip I have about washing swimwear- just rinse it in the sink after using and leave it to drip dry somewhere! It's important to get the water you swam in off of it but machines absolutely wreck them! And they're so expensive! I used to drip dry mine hanging in the shower but now I just flop it flattened out on the walkway! It's sooo much better for them and if you can do it outdoors the sun helps clean it a lot too!
Thanks, will do more research about production of plastic... quick tip to cover the patch: look inside your clothes - sometimes there are nice tags you can cut out and use (near those with product info)...
I am so excited for your videos this month! I love how your videos are not just relaxing and pretty to watch but also so informative. Also how are you liking the smol laundry capsules? I have had my eye on them for a while, do they wash just as good as regular detergent? 💛
I love that you are dedicating this month and your journey moving forward to learning about the intersectionality of sustainability! Such an important thing for all of us to consider. I’m super excited to check out the book you recommended 💕.
I've never had a tumble dryer my whole life and have always hang dryed my clothes. I'm also trying to convince my partner that almost everything we wash doesn't need anything hotter than a 30 wash 😅
I really loved this video. I really liked how your day wasn't overly busy but was more productive. I'm a bit late to start the plastic-free July, but I think now is still a good time to start. I've been looking at getting one of the grünbags for a while and I would love to get one.
I've heard that single use plastics in many medical applications is actually lower impact than the alternative because the process of fully sterilizing materials is so resource/energy intensive.
Jhanneu and yourself (along with Levi Hildebrand) have quickly become some of my favorite RUclipsrs in this space. Thank you for expanding the conversation!
Love the day in the life, and realistic sustainable practices when it comes to plastic and using up what you already have first. I found it hard to find yeast during lock down, so I ended up finding it at a bulk warehouse store, and splitting it into repurposed containers to share with some friends. Yes, it came in a non-recyclable vacuum sealed bag but it is better than 3 of us separately buying smaller versions with more wasteful packaging in total in the end. It was more quantity for my money and less packaging in the end so I still call it a win when pressed. Don't be afraid to ask you local bulk refillery shop to get in specific items. If there is enough demand, they will bring it in - so always ask. My local one in finally reopened and does carry yeast so when I run out I can go back to package free.
Yes, Bryce... me too... in 🇨🇦 we are lucky... we are able to easily find yeast in a glass jar with a metal lid. Isn’t it odd how this situation differs from country to country? BUT I can never find tofu in a glass jar. Happy baking to you!!
Got the notification for your video while watching Shelbi’s video, so I came right on over after! Another great video with excellent points, love the variety of activities and subjects you covered x keep it up Immy x
Definitely check out "A Plastic Ocean" on Netflix! It shows communities impacted by plastic waste, oceans impacted by plastic waste, and how plastic is produced and its life cycle.
You’re one of the first sustainable RUclipsrs that I found and I’ve always loved your content and I’m really glad that you and others are being more vocal about how social justice is tying into climate justice. 🔥👏🏽
LOL you and that jacket... jumper 😉 we should schedule a skype date where you cover that patch and I actually embroider something 😂 tasks we keep putting off. Just say when
Love this kinda day in the life vlog style video! I think they're so fun and chill! Can you talk a bit more about the soap you got? How did you find it, where is it produced, is it like drops? Im On the hunt for a sustainable laundry soap so I'm very curious! Thanks always! ✌❤🌎
Thank you for all that you do! You have been truly inspirational to me with regards to being low waste. At the moment we are trying to limit our food waste, i got the veggie stock idea from you. Once our veggie the stock is done i squish out the kitchen scraps then I put it in the our homemade bokashi bin, which goes in the backyard when full. Thanks again for your videos!
I learned from a UK bread baking channel (Bake with Jack) that you can get fresh yeast at Sainsbury's at the bakery counter. You have to ask the person working there and they'll cut you a piece. Don't ask me why I remember this piece of information when I don't even live in the UK, haha :))
The story of stuff project is streaming the story of plastic documentary throughout July. They also follow that with a panel discussion. It’s free. You can find it on EventBrite.
I love Smol! I found the childlock difficult too, i have a container that i throw mine into when i get it! (and an old reused Yankee jar for some to be on show because I'm fancy like that lol) I'm very new to the low waste movement... Coming from a point of being a disabled person from a lowish income home, I feel like not every single no-waste choice is an option for me. I'll never be waste free, but i don't think anyone truly is, nor is that the point. I am making SO many changes just by making better choices - buying stuff in LESS packaging, reusing stuff that comes in plastic where possible (like chinese containers!) and just being a bit mindful of how much i am using. Have you tried creating your own sourdough culture? It takes a bit of time to get going but once it does you don't have to buy any yeast. =D Completely waste free bread hurrah!

1. You are amazing . 2. I love your commitment to always growing and learning. We need more people like you in this world ❤️
We still have bulk but because of Covid are not allowed to use our own containers anymore. They do have brown paper bags out for some things, but I had just gotten to a good supply of my own bags and containers when this happened. (I’m in the US)
Re unpackaged yeast - you can buy fresh yeast (as opposed to dried in sachets) at supermarket bakery counters, usually they put it in a paper bag for you but I'm sure if you bring a pot they can put it in that instead. We get ours from Sainsbury's, sometimes they're a bit surprised what we're asking for but it's definitely something they can sell. Takes a little bit of adjusting to but we now prefer using fresh to dried yeast, it's very active!
Also, thanks for the great video. I think Gather is my nearest package free store, I was wondering if they were open yet so will try check them out sometime soon :)
It’s funny! I was just looking at that patch wondering when you would get rid of it 😂😂😂 I’m feeling all inspired now about Plastic Free July, not off to the best start but tomorrow is a new day. Be happy xx
i've always wanted to know or see a documentary about how we use to carry around our groceries (you know like using the baskets and sacks for flour and sugar and anything else you would get when you go to the store) and how it suddenly changed everything when companies started to use commercial bags to sell their products and promote their popularity to far away countries, i think it may have something to do with the convenience of shoppers and store owners but, if anybody have any suggestions or good documentary on this topic let me know please. thank you for the video
Making natural yeast is quite easy and I've been doing it for a while now. No more commercial yeast purchasing. :) Vigorously mixing 1:1 parts flour and water on the counter top twice a day has made delicious bread. I've also made it from raisins before, so there are many options out there!
@@SustainablyVeganI've used this page as reference to make many ferments, including yeast. Amazing how simple it can be to make so many delicious things without relying on commercial products! I'm definitely eating much more healthily by purchasing produce only from local farmers and experimenting making more variety of foods at home. :) It's really a wonderful feeling. www.robgreenfield.org/wildfermentation/
If you have a big supermarket (I know Tesco does it) that has a bakery section you might be able to go up and ask them for some fresh yeast. They give it to my Mam for free and happily put it in a Tupperware container for her.
love this as always. I am always looking for cooking/ recipe ideas low waste vegan... so more more more pls Even just what you might consider boring , standard, staple daily food... please please :D
Love this video, Immy. I always love your content 😊. Glad to see you were able to return home. Do you have any suggestions for air drying clothing in a basement apt (moist environment, mold-prone)?
We bought a heated clothes rack. It uses WAY less energy than a machine dryer but it does dry your clothes quicker than air alone and probably reduces the risk of mould etc. Plus it's nice to put on warm clothes straight off the rack in winter!
This is great - I was actually wondering if you have anything to help travelling a bit easier and stress-free for people going minimal waste. I'm going on a school trip soon (by coach) down to a farmhouse and I'm struggling to find some travel-friendly toiletries and general things for farms trips that don't need to be kept in the fridge or are just a bit easier to use on the go and whatnot. Some travel and eco friendly diys would be great - open to any suggestions! :D
I haven't read the book about Chicago, so am not in a position to dispute it's contents. Having grown up in Illinois, graduated from a university near Chicago and have friends and family who have lived there, I am skeptical of upholding any social practice there as an example of how to improve living conditions for those in need. I am glad, however, that someone is trying to help those struggling, as there are many, and hope their practices are sustainable.
Brilliant video as always Immy. Yeast was so hard to come by during lockdown so I went down the sourdough starter route which is a high maintenance one 😂 But then I discovered fresh yeast which my local bakery was selling in a paper bag and I chopped it up and froze the amount I didn't need 👍
Can you make a video on how to compost? Start to finish? Question: does it smell? Is the one you make outside different from the apartment one? Some tips and tricks for beginners? What to put in it and how much? Thanks in advance! 🙏
lol I have smol too and struggled initially to open it - I can see that you haven't pulled the tabs off the sides (near the opposite end of the opening) you pull the tabs off and then push them in to push out the box!
I know we’re in plastic free July but I’m coming up against a lot of challenges this year due to COVID precautions. I mentioned this in a post on a low/zero waste account I follow and was promptly shamed for not reusing my reusable coffee cup and I explained none of the coffee shops near me will use them right now. They will only use their own cups to minimize cross-contamination. I’ve been making more coffee at home but have also wanted to support the small businesses I supported prior to the pandemic as well. I’m just kind of frustrated with the elitist, perfectionist idea of plastic free July. We’re still living in a pandemic and life is very different than last July....having a little grace and compassion for the different circumstances we’re all living in can encourage more people to join the movement
Hey Bethany, I hear you all the way over here in 🇨🇦. Here the pandemic has put a halt on reusable produce bags, grocery bags, motor mugs (coffee cups)... so much disposable stuff being forced into use. Canada was set to ban single-use plastic bags in 2021, but that plan has now been scrapped, and lately the plastic bag manufacturing companies can hardly keep up with the demand. Also... everything in the bulk food bins at my local health store is now pre-packaged in plastic bags (sometimes it is double bagged). I understand the need for sanitation, but this is driving me bonkers. I too am very frustrated!!!
SAF Instant Yeast - Red 16oz Vacuum Pk Bag. I’ve seen this in very few supermarkets. They do sell it on King Arthur flour’s site. I save it in my freezer and it lasts me about a year. I’m not sure if it could last longer than that because I’ve used it up usually by then. Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast, 4 oz, which I think may come in a dark brown small glass jar. That’s what’s in the U.S. though. I’m not sure outside the U.S. for everyone. Did you try looking up bulk active yeast and see what comes up in your area? Maybe check co-ops or ask farmers in markets if they know of any options. I’ve tried making sourdough starter yeast and using it to make pancakes, but mine didn’t turn out well. I gave up because I didn’t want to keep wasting flour at the time for something I was having a hard time perfecting. Have you tried checking health food stores to see if they have the glass jar yeast in your area.
great reading encouraging. And I hope to try barefoot shoes. I have bad knees and my foot is starting to have pain. I want to try the barefoot shoes. I am Canadian so need to locate a good barefoot shoe making location to buy from. Thanks for your videos and teaching.
I think that if we use a "single use" plastic more than once is already one time more than is expected lifetime when its made. If we use it even more ... All adds up as bonus.
Part of me is seriously considering getting a grunbag because I love their design and i would really like to support an ethical business. Another part of me is like... *gestures at all the bags in my and my parents'house* YOU.DON'T.NEED.ANOTHER.BAG It's a supremely first world problem, I know, but every time I feel caught between a rock and a hard place. Should I use what I already have or should I support businesses?
Ooh I’m in early! I’ve seen adverts for Smol - does it work well? Do you have a clothesline outside for windy or sunny days? Pegging out washing is such a pleasure and a good workout! Not often possible in the UKthough. One day I will win a grunbag... one day! Much love Immy! Xxx
I love the term “pegging out washing”. We don’t have that term here in 🇨🇦... this term actually allows me to visualize the task. It’s a good one! Thanks for this.
So I have a cat and he uses a litter box. I’ve been using plastic bags to throw out the waste but I’m trying to steer away from that. What would you recommend as a substitute for the bags?
Just a question. I thought you didn't like using the term 'zero waste' anymore and preffered low water movement. Do you use it to work in algarythums? Or do you still like the term?
Hello. I wonder if there are any ideas for a low waste for dog caring. I'm starting to make little changes in my lifestyle to make it more sustainable and friendly yo the environment. As a teen, of course I live with my family, so it is tricky to do everything I would want to. I try My Best and chande whatever I can.

Also, thanks for the great video. I think Gather is my nearest package free store, I was wondering if they were open yet so will try check them out sometime soon :)
Really loved this video! Thanks for inspiring your audience to keep learning and expanding alongside you!
I loveeeee your videos! Would you mind sharing the recipe of the bread tho? looks yuuum hehe 😋. Greetings from Chile!
I saw an advert for smol recently and I was wondering if it was any good, thanks Immy!
Thank you !!! Will be trying it ❤️
@@SustainablyVeganI've used this page as reference to make many ferments, including yeast.
Hi Immy Such a relaxed and cozy video thank you for taking us through your day.❤
If you have a big supermarket (I know Tesco does it) that has a bakery section you might be able to go up and ask them for some fresh yeast.
Thank you so much for sharing such great content! I’ve just recently subscribed and have genuinely LOVED all of your content!
Thank you for everything you touched on in this video. 🙏🏾
Really liked the video! Chill but informative. 🌻
my favorite channel!
Loving the evolution, What’s the advantage to Smol over, say, a box of washing powder? Or is it a swap only for capsules?
Those breadrolls look heavenly!!! Another awesome video - highly enjoyed watching it, thanks Immy!
I love Isabel Allende ❤️ Hope you enjoy "La isla bajo el mar" is one of my favourites
Oh I've read that book from Isabel Allende!
Amazing and informative content as usual. Thank you!
Thank you for the feedback 🙏🏻❤️ really appreciate it xx
Beautiful video, thank you 💚
Immy, I loved listening and watching you as always 😊
I've never been this early, love your videos!
great reading encouraging.
*gestures at all the bags in my and my parents'house* YOU.DON'T.NEED.ANOTHER.BAG
It's a supremely first world problem, I know, but every time I feel caught between a rock and a hard place.
Xxx
I have smol clothes and dishwashing tablets and would recommend both!
I love the term “pegging out washing”. We don’t have that term here in 🇨🇦... this term actually allows me to visualize the task. It’s a good one! Thanks for this.
Does washing on a cold wash affect the germs killed at all? Or how the clothes are rinsed. I’ve always had the impression hot water kills more germs
Oh i noticed the street... so incredibly clean... England beloved!
Or do you still like the term?
yeah I hate the term zero waste... I've been using a bit recently because of the algorithm but I'm going to stop. It's not worth it.
The only thing you have to be careful about when hanging laundry up indoors, is mold. Especially if you live in a small space, this can be a problem🙈
You've come so far in educating yourself
Maybe you can embroider some flowers over the current patch.
Loved this video!
Your so sweet and nice video iam not feel good today iam on my pms no fun yep I hope you are having happy day and god bless you and your family .
Where do you get your books? Right now since the library is closed I only go to used book stores
Love the Grunbag!
