    re: habit stacking i do sit ups while my coffee brews. bonus: i keep my kitchen floor super cleaner bc i know i'm going to be lying down there daily!

    About 25 years ago I received some antique glass canning jars after an elderly lady in my Dad’s neighbourhood passed away. These jars are so beautiful, even the lids are glass, they come from an era when nothing was disposable. I started trying to purchase dry goods in the biggest packaging possible, or make items at home just so I could store stuff in these jars. And thus, my first low waste habits were born out of the desire to re-use these aesthetically pleasing jars that otherwise would have gone to the dump (pre-recycling era). Loved this video Immy, so beautiful and so informative (just like you). PS - I get a dopamine hit every time I see that you have uploaded another video. Thank-you so much for creating such stimulating content especially during this challenging time.

      We lately found some jars that might be similar on our attic, when the roof of the house we live in needed to be renewed. The daughter of our landlady said, that her grandmother did canning, so they're probably at least 50 years old. The shape is very unique, but they should be perfect for fermentation. I'm already using some to store cereals in them and for the rest I'll do an Instagram giveaway. Those beauties need a good home.

      I'd love to but i've never done a course on it so would feel like it wasn't a good idea! Maybe I should look up learning how to do it properly x

    One zero waste habit that I am have been doing for a couple years now is to refill my handsoap and laundry detergent bottles in a zero waste shop that is on my way home from work. It makes me happy to think I am not consuming plastic bottles on that end anymore! There are so many other things I would like to do! I’ll get there, slowly but surely! I also just swapped shaving cream for unpackaged shaving soap. So far it works very nicely!

    Whenever i make coffee, i always put the coffee ground aside ! You can do so many things with this, it can be used to exfoliate for the skin but it’s also very handy to clean dirty vegetables or to clean a greasy pan ! Kept in the fridge, it lasts at least a week :)

    I have implemented the reusable bags and coffee cups habits too! I don't allow myself to buy a coffee without a reusable mug, so the "punishment" of not getting a coffee/tea helps me remember for the next time! A lot of my sustainable habits are formed around food, as I love cooking and am passionate about reducing food waste. It is now unnatural for me to throw things away in the kitchen, as my veggie scraps go into a freezer bag for vegetable stock or in the compost container destined for the backyard bin.

    Here are some things which have become automatic. By the way - I also read Atomic Habits this past year- excellent book.
    Over the past couple of years, I have continued to avoid plastic water bottles. After using up my plastic bottles, I purchased a steel water bottle and take it everywhere I go. Our family has stopped using plastic ziplock sandwich bags when packing lunches. We keep our re-usable grocery bags in the trunk of our car to avoid forgetting them.
    I have also been very intentional when it comes to reducing my driving. I try to make sure I combine as many errands as I can in one trip. One of the other habits (I picked up from one of your videos this year) is shutting off my car instead of idling the engine when it makes sense. For example; sitting in my car waiting for someone, or when stopped at rail road tracks.

    I'm trying to get away from fast fashion myself too. The big thing is I can't thrift because my local area doesn't have good plus sized clothes. So what am I doing instead? I'm increasing my sewing skills and working on sewing my own wardrobe. I can select the materials myself, and try to go for more sustainable fabrics, and I can make something that is the right shape and size for me.

    Cooking my own food. I worked my way up to cooking 99 out of 100 of my meals, eating out two or less times a month. One of the only silver linings to my chronic illness is the easy to see benefits to healthy habits. Eating healthy home cooked meals directly effects the amount of times I go to the restroom, and how much pain I’m in.

    Thank you for sharing. It was inspiring to listen to you reflect on the value of habit.
    Here are some of the things I have been doing for some time now and that I can consider habits :
    I pack my lunch in mason jars (I actually eat out of these mason jars at work, easy and quick cleanup),
    I use home sewn napkins (from recycled bedsheets) instead of paper towels, which I no longer buy,
    I use reusable fabric bags or, should I forget them , a furoshiki (I always have a scarf tied to my handbag to use as furoshiki, plus it’s elegant) instead of plastic / paper grocery bags,
    I always have a cup and a teaspoon in my handbag, so that I don’t rely on disposable ones in coffee shops,
    I have had a mooncup for almost 18 years now,
    I too go to thrift shops when I need clothes.

    I'm really proud of my progress this past year. Some sustainable habits I've developed are taking public transport to work, thrifting, shopping for local, organic and seasonal produce at the farmer's market, starting a garden, and brewing my own kombucha 😊

    I've been trying to limit my screen time recently. of course some of these
    things don't work too well in quarantine :P but these habits helped me:
    -never taking any devices into the bedroom
    -turning my phone & computer off two hours before I go to sleep
    -eating meals with other people as often as possible instead of being on my phone
    -challenging myself to see how long I can go without checking my phone in the morning
    -trying out alternatives like reading books, playing the piano, going outside, yoga, etc.
    -putting my laptop away for the entire week except sundays
    (but that's the hardest one 😅)

    Another winner 👍 I have just binge watched your last three videos and I feel calm and hopeful. While watching this I realised that I haven’t used a supermarket carrier bag in at least 10 years, guesstimated from remembering sending my young son (who grew up and graduated from university 3 years ago) out to the car to get them if I forget to take them into the store! I simply always have bags in my backpack. You are so right about saying things out loud, if I am struggling with a concept I find putting the words in to order to speak them out loud helps my brain to get organised. My brain isn’t always helpful though, today, instead of giving me the word ‘thermometer’ it gave me ‘ hot measure stick thing’ 😂😂😂😂😂 Stay safe and happy xxx

    always keep my re-useable bags in my car that way i can NEVER forget them. This honestly helps so much especially when you're first getting started with zero waste.

    One of the things that has been helpful for me to buy less online has been to force myself to wait one week before deciding whether or not to buy something. Most often, I find that after a week I no longer have the urge to buy the product in question

    As always, I appreciate you and your time. I would say I’m still in the early stages of my journey. The biggest habit I think I’ve been trying to break and doing so much better on, is reusable cloths for my kitchen and for cleaning. In the past I was so used to just grabbing a paper towel. But it has gotten MUCH better. Also HUGE one for me and my family is properly cleaning and recycling items correctly! 💚♻️💚♻️💚

      This is one I’m working on as well. I found that when I moved the roll of paper towels to a different location on my countertops, I would catch myself every time I went to grab a paper towel and they weren’t in their normal spot. It has helped me so much! I would reach for a paper towel without even thinking about it. It was a bad habit. Now I use way less, and only when absolutely necessary.

    This video is so beautiful. I love the visuals and animations. The only request I have is, could you edit the quotes to last a little bit longer? I'm a fast reader, but it's quite challenging to finish reading the quote while listening to the important things you're saying, and I don't want to disrupt the experience of the video by having to fish for the quote. And yes, I recently discovered Atomic Habits, and it's awesome. xo

    Habit stacking is a brilliant and much easier way to build a new habit. Started flossing before I brushed my teeth and almost 3 months later I only missed doing when I had the flu.

      Hi Crystal... wow, what a great idea. Starting tonight I’m definitely going to floss before I brush my teeth. Sometimes I get lazy and skip the flossing, but I know I won’t do that if I floss first and then brush second. Genius idea!!

    I still remember to stop and appreciate the moment when something lovely is happening, like a warm ray of sunshine, a nice smell, or a hug from my child.
    I still cook a big batch of one healthy meal every weekend for the coming week.
    I still buy a canned beverage over a bottled one.
    I still check the sugar content of packaged foods.
    I still avoid packaging whenever possible.
    I still ask what someone was about to say when I accidentally interrupt them (ADHD) and make sure I'm not dominating the conversation.
    I still ask how someone feels instead of imagining how they might feel.
    I still put my glasses, keys, sunglasses, etc., back in the samd place every time I enter my home so I don't lose them.
    I still try to picture where I will put and how I will use a new item before bringing it home.
    I still check the materials and country of manufacture of an item before buying it.
    With the help of the "Tody" app, I still get my housework done regularly.
    I declutter casually as a part of every day now, asking whether the things I've kept still serve me or my family.
    I still guard my personal boundaries as well as I can, so that I'm only doing what feels good, spending my time with people who add to my life.
    I'm working on getting to bed earlier, rule-breaking my sugar addiction, not eating after 6 pm or before 8 am, meditating every day, remembering my reusable bags (I'm going to put a hook on my front door today!), and getting more exercise again after pregnancy. I also want to pick foods that are more sustainable.
    I'm also on a low/no buy this year, so I'm working on my habitual spending, such as decor, clothing, sugar, and fast food.

    Thanks for another great video Immy! I wanted to share that I actually took a course that centred around issues in food and sustainability and we talked a LOT about how often local food is not necessarily more sustainable. Transportation was actually a pretty small factor in the overall footprint compared to the production of that food item. However I don't think we went too much into seasonality though. I'm definitely not an expert on the matter but I thought I'd bring it up since you're always so open to contributions form your followers. 💓 Food for thought :)

    Very nice editing! Next thing I want to do is buying a reusable cup. I know it sounds silly and that’s the first step to zero waste for a lot of us, but I always thought I didn’t need one (I have already so many cups, bottles or containers at home...) and usually if try to have my coffee in. BUT I find myself often frustrated because I don’t have time to have my coffee in, and I don’t want to use a paper cup, so I don’t get coffee at all. Good way to save money but frustrating... so next step: reusable cup!! Xxx

    This was very good! Concerning your last point about speaking it aloud when you're about to do something wasteful, the other day I had the kitchen cleaned up and was hungry so I went online and began to order some Chinese food to be delivered. But when I said out loud, "Am I really so lazy that in order to avoid washing a dish I'm willing to spend $40?" It really made a difference, and I decided to prepare something simple at home instead. Anyway, these are great tips!

    I have a habit of listening to audiobooks and all of them coming from the library or Libby, an app that is connected to my local library. While listening, I knit or crochet and that is keeping my hands busy. I do it also as I’m watching a movie on Prime Video and RUclips. Another habit that was just starting to be regular was No Spending Unwisely, Eating Pantry Only Meals, and Declutter Every Day.....I made these part of my journey on minimalism and found it was working. It truly was until this coronavirus affair started, when being warned that I should stock up on essential supplies. I did, and it ate up my savings as demand was high and prices got higher.

    I'm reading atomic habits too! I started in quarantine and now I'm about to finish it. I started doing yoga and drinking hot water (although I already had plenty of water, hot water is supposed to be better), along with other things that would help me improve my lifestyle and I was able to put down the sleeping pills so I'm very happy !! Congratulations on your channel, I really liked it, especially the video on 100 Ways to Reduce Food Waste.

    I am also aware of cues and habit stacking. I put my reusable shopping bags back into my car as soon as I am finished with them. I stacked the new habit of doing calisthenics while I am watching the local news since I have been confined during this virus crisis. (This is to replace the habit of going to the gym.) I have also started to take five deep breaths when I let my dog out the back door. This is calming and healthy for me.

    Your content is always amazing and I really admire all you do to reduce your waste. I have been on a sustainable journey for about 30 years now and I have definitely had my ups and downs and relapses along the way. I found that I really lost a lot of my good habits after I had kids and many of them I have tried to get back, but it can be difficult when you have a family who has certain habits or expectations ingrained in them and so any change in your own personal habits affects them too and vice versa. For example, I became vegetarian at 18, was vegan in my 20s, went back to eating dairy after I had kids and 2.5 years ago went back to being vegan. But my family still loves cheese and eggs and even eat meat. Of course, I don't buy it for them but they sometimes don't appreciate what I cook for them because they want those things. Also, I have reduced my use of plastic bags to nearly zero but my boyfriend hasn't and is constantly coming home with them. Then it ends up being my responsibility to try to recycle them otherwise he will just throw them in the trash. I could go on and on....I keep trying to do my best and try to keep educating them but it is frustrating sometimes. I just wish they cared as much as I do.

    I’m very very new to the low waste movement! So mine might not be that impressive, but I have always brought my own silverware in my lunch bag to work even though there are containers of plastic cutlery on the counter in the kitchen at work. The habit is always putting a spoon and a fork in my bag no matter what I’m eating so that in case I grab the wrong one or something I always I have both so that I don’t ever have to grab plastic! 🙂

    One habit I developed recently is to realise that I'm not wasting time if I do something that I feel like doing more than others. I used to feel very guilty for not using my time properly, and now (thanks a huge bit to therapy as well) I am starting to see the good in most of the times when I still feel like I could have been more productive. Due to lockdown the local farmer we used to get veggies from isn't coming anymore for a while, but we can still buy bread from our fave shop and not from supermarkets. I also convinced my mum to buy dishsoap-friendly gloves instead of disposable ones, because we must wear them when we go out, so we just wear them and wash them with soap when we get home instead of producing more plastic or supporting unethical latex farming. And my friend who stopped drawing for a while, finally picked up her art supplies! This last bit is just to cheer you guys up in this hard period of our lives.

    I’ve been regrowing vegetables from seeds and composting food waste to reduce how much trash we produce. I also try to reuse any containers we buy for food storage or as plant pots!

    Hey, I think I’ll give the book a go, never heard of it and how you talked about it made me really wanna read it! Some of the things I implemented in the past two years and are now habits are: no more plastic bottle and single use plastic, always go shopping with my own bags, no more fast fashion and impulse buy and seasonal eating. Still have a lot to improve and more habits to create, but it’s a start ^_^

    For fashion what I do is: when I go into a shop/online and find something I really want, I take a picture of the tag (after trying it on in the right size) and then for the next few months I look it up regularly on thrift shop websites around me, and then I get the item I wanted, but from someone else ! It's not perfect, but it prevents me from buying from those shops directly, and it saves me quite a lot of money.

    Great video, I appreciate your skills and your life habits you generously share. I am a full time pedestrian for about a year and a half. I fill my glass water bottle before I leave the house. I keep reusable bags in my backpack. I use bulk refill options whenever possible. I keep my apartment at around 60 degrees and wear sweaters. I have made a conscious effort for each of my sustainable habits starting about 5 years ago. It is now a life journey 💕 I agree about your voice being soothing. A book reading would be great.

      Maggie, I am with you on the turning down the thermostat habit. We used to do this only at night time, but then found that we eventually became more comfortable when the house was cooler even during the day. That’s why we have all those comfy sweaters and thick socks and slippers right? Besides this, after I hit my 50’s I suddenly found I had my own internal furnace that unfortunately does not come with a thermostat.

    I am nowhere near zero waist yet but listening to this made me realize just how far I've come.
    It started when I was a kid, I was a green thumb type from the begining, I loved trees and gardening. My grandparents and I went to garage sales and thrift shops all the time, we composted, we had a garden, we gave bones from steak and roasts to the dogs, etc. The first thing I really did on my own was at summer camp they taught us how to make crafts from recycling and it blew my little 5 year old mind. From then on I practically kept everything for crafting. Then for a while things changed. Me and my mom moved out of my grandparents house and on our own. From there it went way down hill, I was still someone who wanted to be eco friendly and so was my mom but she was also a Horder. I lived in a filthy home for years after using paper plates and buying plastic forks in bulk because the dishes were three giant moldy stacks that no one would even touch. I hated it and knew we could do better. Eventually I was out living with other family and made my first low waist decision, I bought a menstral cup. It was good for the environment, my wallet, and my disphoria tbh. From there it took a while but I got a place of my own. Every since I've noticed even more how much waist I produce and I'm taking steps to lower it. I've wanted to go vegan for a long while which has the less waist bonus (I'm one of the ones doing it for the animals🥺), I try to figure some way to use up left over produce, I freeze my bread, I try to cook in preportions I'll actually eat since I rarely can get myself to eat leftovers, and I just got a bunch of jars from my grandma's basement.
    It's so easy to feel like I need to do more I want to start a garden on my balcony, I want to use soap berries instead of detergent, I want to stop buying things because ADHD thinks I must have them now! But it's nice to look at how far I've come too. Thanks for the perspective 😊

    Things I am still doing 1+ year later: still no car, use tap water instead of water bottles, use reusable bags for shopping, reduced toiletries, use flameless candles, use cloth napkins, use rechargeable batteries, use handkerchiefs, use reusable cosmetic puffs, use tea strainer and loose leaf tea, use reusable pantiliners, don't relax my hair, use cardboard instead of plastic, make my own diy products, use bamboo toothbrush and floss in glass jar, and use metal straws. These are the things I am consistently doing after a year or more, some of them longer. I have been without a car for four years now. I still wànt to do more and looking for more ways to be a better steward of the environment. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you for sharing this, it is actually nice to look back on the things one has accomplished… I stopped eating animal products years ago, after reading The China Study, my parents were into sprouts and macrobiotic so it wasn’t a difficult habit to get.
    I buy légumes dry and in paper bags whenever possible (if not in bulk)
    I walk as often as possible
    I thrift clothes and accessories as often as possible and donate those I no longer wear
    I re-use the plastic produce bags I get as long as possible.
    I use a menstrual cup and labia pads I made
    As per Dr Michael Greger’s recommendation, I eat my tea leaves : I buy those that are rolled into large beads, I cold infuse them in my - reusable - water bottle overnight and just much on them when I drink my tea.
    I go to the gym twice a week, it’s not a habit yet, but what I do to make sure it happens is I wear my gym outfit under my clothes ( I plan my outfit accordingly) and my gym bag is ready by the door in the morning, so that when I come back from work I just grab it and head over to the gym. No decision making involved.
    I meditate every morning, with an app (Daily yoga) that makes forming and tracking the habit easier.
    I cut up unsalvageable linen and tees into rags used instead of paper towel.
    I shifted to tabs instead of toothpaste, and soap sheets instead of liquid laundry soap, I am considering subscribing to a company that provides refillable dish soap dispenser (and refills)
    I always have a shopping bag folded in my purse, as well as a thermos bottle (that I use as a refillable cup), a metal teaspoon and fork (these I started including in my purse essentials because of you and Shelbizlee)

    I do meal prep every sunday and I do not leave home without my water botle, even just to go to the supermarket. I also grab a snack with me every time i know that I will spent more than 3 hours out.

    Even though i still buy fast fashion what I did in the past 2 years is chose high quality staple and basic items.. i created a timeless capsule wardrobe. And i dont buy trends unless they suit my body and i would wear them after the trend is over. The next step would be when each item wears out i would replace it with an ethical buy :)

    Something interesting to bear in mind re habits and how they work in the brain, the bit about it being the anticipation that is rewarding more than the actual reward is only true for neurotypical brains, so for some people this isn’t the case. I have ADHD and do not get satisfaction out of the anticipation as my brain needs more dopamine than that, so for someone like me the best way to build habits is to regularly reward, even once the habit is built as it keeps our brain interested in it and reduces the likelihood that we stop doing the thing because we’re bored with it. Definitely try and make that reward something that is low impact though (i love a smoothie) Great video otherwise though Immy! I love the idea of researching the impact to curb the want to buy fast fashion etc.

    Loved the content of the video but really struggled with the extra graphics animations over the b-roll. I found the ways it was subtly moving over footage moving in a different way actually engaged my motion sickness (I've got wonky eyes that make me extra sensitive). If it's something you're really enjoying, I'll still tune in to listen, but won't get to look as much. Thank you for your work, Immy!

    I always try to remember my privilege of being able to make swaps and create new, more sustainable habits. For example riding my bike to school instead of going by bus or choosing the unwrapped mushrooms even though they're more expensive. Still, some things are just so much influenced by my family and surrounding that I can only keep annoying them by saying that we could do better. And I don't want to have those conversations but I feel like I have the responsibility.

    In an effort to buy less fast fashion, I would also immediately close the browser and search something that would dissuade me from buying anything. I was searching more about frugality, and why I don't need another t-shirt. It worked great! I realized I would end up on the fast fashion websites more out of boredom than a need for anything. I've spent almost nothing on clothes this year. I would definately recommend this strategy if you're trying to stop buying stuff online.

    Some healthy habits I've completely incorporated:
    >> drinking at least 2 litres of water a day
    >> drinking MOSTLY water; also tea, very occasionally coffee or wine, pop drinks pretty much never (it was torture to give them up, until I got used to it -- now I find them distasteful, which I'd never have believed if you'd told me it'd happen before I gave them up)
    >>giving up salt, pretty much: I cook without salt and only very occasionally use a little to season food, and again, very very difficult for a few months until I got used to the taste of food without adding anything to it. I still like salt, but I notice a very little goes a long way now, and I can certainly eat without it. I use herbs and spices much more often to season nowadays, which is an added benefit, as they tend to be helpful for various health reasons
    >> walking at least an hour every day, though still working on making that my minimum walking goal and adding exercise beyond that (on a regular basis, rather than occasionally)

    I just start something to live zero waste and those thing impact to me a lot. I start realize what those thing need or want. So thank you your videos so much, green lifestyle it not only to protect enviroment but also good for human. First I don't eat fabricated food like noodles, snack, coca. It's really good my health and my teeth. Second I just buy those thing needed like soap, moisture cream, lipsitck not more shampoo, toothpaste, shower gel, cleanser, cotton pad, micellar water. My father made dishwashing liquid and laudry liquid detergent.

    Not buying more food than what you know you'll eat, is a good plan. Worrying about food going to waste because it doesn't meet supermarket standards, isn't really necessary. Despite stories about bananas not being straight enough, and carrots with "two legs", those veggies actually aren't wasted at all. They are often used as ingredients for food products where you can't "recognize" the full ingredient. None of it goes to waste. What does happen is that the farmer gets less money for grade B products, and the supermarket standards force more produce into grade B category which the supermarket bought very cheaply and sell at greater margin because it convinced customers they help to save food from becoming waste. It's a money making scheme that you may not wish tomsupport, but not necessarily a waste scheme. Buying from the farmer directly allows them to get a fair price for produce, but fully sympathetic to the fact that not everyone can afford it.

    I think most people think way more fruits and vegetebles are wasted then there actually are. Some vegetebles don't meet certain consumer standards and are not sold in supermarkets. But those are used for restaurants and ready meals. They don't go to waste. That's what I learned anyways, from a consumer program in the Netherlands. The program zoomed in on paprika's, but it should go for most if not all vegetables and fruits (that can still be used in some way).

    I have been collecting non recyclable plastic since Christmas 19 to cut up into pieces and make eco-bricks. I am planning to make a stool/table with the eco-bricks, and I will need 16. The stool is my reward. I have 2 and a half so far! It is a pain because you can only use clean and dry plastic, so I need to wash every single peice and peg it on my clothes airer to dry, so there is always a selection of plastic on my balcony. My flat is on the ground floor next to a bus stop, so I am hoping that other people will be inspired. I might even display the finished item in about 18 months time, or longer if I can use less plastic!

    I used reusable market bags but unfortunately due to COVID 19 we can no longer use them at the grocery stores in my town in East Tennessee USA but fortunately I have not been driving the 45 minute each way commute as much.

    You are happy to live close to your gym and farmer’s market... my gym is 6 km away and the farmer‘s market 12 km 🥺 I dont have the time to go there by walking or biking.

    i live in a small town (50k people) so I mostly walk around, I never learned to bike so that option isn't available and taking the bus is not really worth it because there aren't bus stops close enough to my house, so I only take it when I'm going to a town next to mine to have my weekly therapy session (when we're corona free, I mean lol). Most of the veggies and fruits I buy are produced by local producers and I try not to buy that many industrialized items. I can't afford to give up fast fashion but I also can't afford to buy it too often so I guess that balances out! I also thrift shop whenever possible (in actual thrift shops, where they'll charge 5 reais for an used shirt, not 50 wtf). I think the one things I keep failing is buying books. I have a ton of books and havent read even 1/3 of them, but I keep buying more...

    Very informative and well done with the editing! Me personally would save some effort on some of the B-roll and effects and instead leave in more of the main shot (essentialism wink wink). Plus I found it a bit distracting to listen to what's being said at the same time as reading a different quote. That said I enjoy how your content is evolvning! (Of course, hope this critisism helps you and not brings you down cause that is really don't my intent.) :)
