I hope you enjoy today's video! It sounds like I LOVE plastic but really i'm just trying to add some nuance to the conversation that my activism so desperately lacked before. I will be doing a more in depth video on how plastic facilities affect local communities and much more! This is just the beginning. I've added captions as well to help those who need it. I'll be updating all of our videos this week to all have captions!! Long overdue xx
Sustainably Vegan There is the option of plant based plastics so there is an alternative to petroleum based plastic. It’s not just waste that is the issue but the using fossil fuels in the production of plastic so alternatives to traditional plastic is an essential on so many levels.
We have been battling plastic as if it is the cancer of the planet. Years ago a good friend of mine had a small amount of cancer which she battled for several years. Then she went to a “Living Better With Cancer” Conference where the approach was positive and proactive. It was life-changing, her outlook and her health improved. Perhaps we need to learn how to “Live Better With Plastic”? Let’s be real, this synthetic compound is not going away any time soon. Immy, I appreciate your focus on the ‘recovery’ of plastic as opposed to the ‘eradication’ of plastic!!!! This video sweetens my attitude toward plastic which, I must admit, has been pretty sour up until now. As always, thank-you so much for what you do!!!
Hi Immy! I would like to recommend the book I am reading at present, it's called Plastic Free by Beth Terry. My lovely husband bought me this second hand. It was first published in 2012, but to be honest information is still relevant. She covers everything to do with plastic. Can I just say recycling would work fine if people would stop littering. So much rubbish just dropped, most of which is plastic bottles, huff! Good video by the way.
So so happy to see you tackle more complicated and less straightforward issues when it comes to sustainability! It’s great for someone like me who has made the easy swaps and switches but is only fourteen and therefore can’t decide everything like where my family buys produce from or what shampoo my parents use. Truly wonderful video as always Immy
The world needs more 14 year olds like you Clara Irene. Thank-you so much for being an amazing role model, and an inspiration for youth and for everyone! Greetings to you from 🇨🇦, I hope your day is going swell ♻️🌎😄
Can you make a video about the different plastics and why some are recycled and some not? The most confusing part about recycling for me (in the UK) is that there are so many things I think should be recyclable, but they are labelled as "Not yet recycled" or advice on the Internet is confusing and conflicting. I don't have a zero waste shop near me and end up buying products in plastic when there's no plastic free alternative.
Immy, I think you should pass this on to Wrap - they are funding Clear on Plastic but the new OPRL binary labelling is going to confuse a lot of people. The problem, surely, is that government will not invest in a nationwide recycling system, so messages are always mixed. The councils all adopt different systems and then can't afford to educate their consumers what is accepted in their area. Meanwhile, manufacturer's big and small have to pay to use the OPRL but it isn't obligatory. The reason people don't recycle is because the government hasn't invested in it.
This is a great conversation starter. The recycling system in the US is soooooo complicated and flawed. Rules can sometimes even change by city or county. It's exciting though to learn about it and to try and figure out ways to make it better. Great video! ✌❤🌎
Wow, this was an eye-opening video. I also tend to hate on plastics, but you hit some really great points about why plastics are still used and why they sometimes are preferred to other materials. I love the content you have been creating recently!!
I agree, I also think there is a lot of potential in using plant based plastics (such as hemp plastic which biodegrades) instead of petroleum based plastics.
This was absolutely AMAZING and just what the internet needed, a nuanced take on such a complicated issue. I also absolutely love the elements of showed self awareness around how your own view of the topic has changed over time, sets such a great example for, especially but not exclusively, young people. A real masterpiece - keep up the good work! 🌱💚
Whenever I go back to my hometown in Italy, I am impressed on how little plastic they use for veggies and legumes in supermarket. Here in Scotland is the opposite! Even a tiny carrot is wrapped up in plastic! So unnecessary...
I'm currently moving house so trying to consciously declutter and recycle etc so I've been binging your content. Ive making notes on future lower waste swaps while analysing areas for improvement as im packing away/decluttering my possessions. Your channel has been so inspirational and helpful whilst also not making me feel like a cretin when I find areas in my life that really need some work! Thank you so much!
I don't have many friends who are into sustainability and watching your videos makes me feel like you are my Internet friend who I can talk to about these things. Thanks for making these vídeos 🌿
I definitely think this is a good way to talk about plastic that shows people that sometimes you are going to have to get the plastic item but hopefully you can dispose of it responsibly and hopefully down the line the product has been recovered and repurposed for something else. Of course refusing plastic whenever possible is still our best course for action but this gives us more to think about when we know more of the process, so we can make the best decisions for us and the planet.
Hey there friend... great comment you have posted here. We’re on the same page Sistah... when it comes to plastic (as Immy mentioned) reduce, repurpose, recover... refuse it first to avoid all of the above! Plastic ‘recovery’ is more logical and achievable than plastic ‘eradication’. Greetings from 🇨🇦... hope you are having a great day!
A fair and balanced view in the reality of the current situation. I know i'd looked into bio plastics and compostable options only to do more research and find in my area it wasn't really benefiting the environment due to the lack of proper infrastructure to deal with them.
Balanced and informative as always 👍 If we could stop people dropping rubbish on the ground it would be a great start. The amount of plastic bottles and packaging people discard in the street is mind boggling.
There are so many things out there in our world that I don’t agree with nor can I fully understand... littering is at the top of this list! In the valley where I live we occasionally see “drive-by littering”. This happens when people are driving out here to get firewood, or go fishing, hunting, mushroom picking, hiking, trail biking, canoeing, paddle boarding, swimming, etc and they toss their trash out the window as they drive through the pristine wilderness. ARGH!! I just don’t get it!! Thanks for listening to my rant here Linda, I hope your are well and ready to have a great weekend.
Mary Charlebois What amazes me is that people will carry full bottles and bags to an area but are unable to carry the empty, hence lighter, things back! As lockdown eases and people are visiting the great outdoors they are leaving folding chairs, beach tents and coolers behind! They just buy it, use it and dump it. This stuff is too cheap 🤬 Thanks for listening to my rant as well. Hope you have a great weekend too 😁
Yes! its so important to look at our systems as a whole rather than creating simple rules. Thank you for providing such valuable education content on sustainability.
Unless America is magically wiped off the face of the earth and stupid poor/ religious people are sterilized or stop being so selfish and having so many babies all this " recycling " is a laughable act of futility!
I'm not one to comment normally, I'm a lurker and a 👍 liker 😅 But this video is brilliant and really informative, thank you. Its actually left me feeling fairly positive.x
I bought my plastic boxes more than thirty years ago... still perfect... i think plastic is so precious that must be used forever and never throwed away... we need so little if we take care of it!
Thank you for bringing some nuance to such a complex subject ! We mustn't treat all plastic the same and mustn't condemn it as if it were all equally bad. The industry can continue to produce and use some plastic, but it is essential that the countries producing it take responsibility for their own recycling rather than carelessly shipping it to underdeveloped countries.
In Finland we have a genius way of making sure people recycle their glass or plastic bottles and beer etc cans. There is an added cost of 10 cents to 1,2 euros per bottle/can, when you buy it. And when you return the bottles/cans back to the store (they are by law ordered to have a machine to return them to), you get your money back. You can either use it in the store or cash it back. This works great at home, but also out in the streets: if someone leaves their bottle, someone will pick it up shortly after, as it is money. There are no bottles or cans left behind after a festival! The bottles are then correctly and effectively recycled. I hope this system would spread around the whole world!
This video was so well done and informative!!! Thank you Immy!! for years my county in the US was considered the ideal when it came to recycling, but slowly over the last 10 years they have lessened the funding for waste management and have shut down a lot of the recycling facilities and most recently they have stopped glass recycling for curbside trash pickup. Majority of the people i know are simply not motivated to take their glass to a recycling center, especially after years of not having to and it just makes me so upset that in such an affluent area that was doing it SO well we've completely backtracked :(
Wow. What a video. Thank you so much for your time and effort spent not only for researching extensively to provide us with the informative facts. But also for the time that went behind editing the footage. Hats off Immy, you‘ve created a highly graphically pleasing yet super informative video! Well done 🧡
Thank you for making this video! I think that the sustainability movement has made us think all plastic is the enemy and in order to have a greener future, we need to remove plastic completely from our lives, when in reality, being 'plastic free' isn't realistic for anyone or any industry and like you said, has really useful qualities that few other materials have.
Agreed... I, too, am skeptical that we will ever see a “plastic free” world. As Immy pointed out... plastic ‘recovery’ as opposed to plastic ‘eradication’ is a pragmatic approach, it just needs to become a high priority which will require funding. I enjoyed your comment, thank-you for posting it.
Well it's already a great impact if many individuals won't buy anything plastic IF avoidable in any way. 🤷🏻♀️ Cause that means less production of plastic, less consumption in general and less overall use of unnecessary plastic. Looking at plastic as the "evil" that it is is not wrong, even if it is a fact that some plastic will play a role in even the most diligent consumers life. Our world might not be plastic production free in the coming decades or even centuries, but that is no excuse to indulge and mindlessly consume. Our avoidance of plastic as a growing mass of people has already lead to many inventions with the aim to reduce plastic and to plain removal of unnecessary plastic and we don't know what the science of the future brings, so voting against plastic with your money and voice is still of great importance. Nobody realistically expects you to live absolutely plastic free, the eco movement just condemns the insane waste and insane production of this material among others and they're still absolutely right in doing so.

Recently in my city, we found out that even though they still collected recycling, they weren't actually recycling anything and just tossing it in the landfill with everything else 🤬
This is something I've been wondering about for a while now, so thank you for this video, really informative. Will check the links and try to do more research on the subject 😊
im currently watching Broken on netflix which has a super interesting episode about plastics and recycling (focusing on the USA) and i highly recommend everyone go watch it now!!

This is an issue I have researched in depth but can not get to the bottom of!
Je me suis abonnée à votre chaîne RUclips car c'est sensationnel de pouvoir lire vos explications en dessous de la vidéo...Je suis française et je comprends pas tout , surtout si l'accent de la personne est très "original "...😍😍😍 ...Christine...
Really interesting video! I’ve always thought that even if I completely wash and recycle only the correct items but other people on my street don’t do this, it’ll mean that everyone’s recycling just get thrown into landfill☹️ is this true and if so how can it be combated?
Today, recyclables are being sent to Malaysia and Philippines, since Chinese facilities are closed. Yes, China is the world's recycle bin. Unfortunately, Malaysia and the Philippines do not have the appropriate facilities and do are becoming the world's landfill. Better to use and reuse plastics than"recycle".

This is an issue I have researched in depth but can not get to the bottom of!
Urghh i just loved this video! Thank you
Je me suis abonnée à votre chaîne RUclips car c'est sensationnel de pouvoir lire vos explications en dessous de la vidéo...Je suis française et je comprends pas tout , surtout si l'accent de la personne est très "original "...😍😍😍 ...Christine...
Great video x
Really interesting video! I’ve always thought that even if I completely wash and recycle only the correct items but other people on my street don’t do this, it’ll mean that everyone’s recycling just get thrown into landfill☹️ is this true and if so how can it be combated?
What about creating plastics without using fossil fuels i.e. from plants?
such a resourceful video
Yay first! cant wait to watch 💕
Yaas!
Is there any good videos like this in Russian I would like to show my grandparents ❤️❤️

Your videos are so informative. I hope to inspire people to look after the planet through my channel in the same way you have inspired me. Thank you for yet another great video!💖
