As someone who’s worked in the fashion industry (as a designer) I can attest to the bad conditions in every step of the work chain. It’s an industry dominately made up of female workers with uncertain conditions and with male CEOs profiting from stealing ideas, greenwashing literal slavery and only caring about profit. I felt completely and utterly misplaced because I genuinely loved fashion but wasn’t about hurting people in expressing my artistic vision. The great Li Edelkoort asked us: ”How can a product that needs to be sewn, grown, harvested, combed, spun, knitted, cut and stitched, finished, printed, labelled, packaged and transported cost a couple of euros? It’s impossible.” Please support internet-local small designers with sustainability-aspirations. We’re on social media, it’s easy to find us.

I saw an interview with the daughter of one of the pioneers of the textile industry in Bangladesh. She said that for the workers to receive a living wage it would require a price increase of 5 cents per item. So much misery for such a small amount.

Is we ask for more the factory will move to a cheaper country. And the same if people from wealthy countries don't by those products the factories will close and instead of what you think is a small income will be 0. Don't talk in our name please.

Thank you for talking about the human rights issues behind fast fashion. I sew for a living in the US. People are outraged when I tell them how much I charge for basic alterations. I charge $20 an hour for my labor and that's on the low end. I have bills and taxes to pay! These companies are not only exploiting their workers, they're devaluing the real labor of other professionals.
Side note: A term I recently heard for women's work but more inclusive of all genders in the workplace is feminized labor.

I remember as a teen back in the early 90s going to thrift stores for clothing. Being a part of the Goth subculture particularly in the 80s & 90s it was the norm. We bought many of our items for next to nothing in second hand shops. All that was needed was a bit of creativity to turn a tired looking garment into something profound there was not a lot of choice at the time especially in my area not like today with online shopping, you had to use your imagination. I remember sometimes being picked on at school not only because I looked different, but that I was shopping in second hand which made me look kind of pathetic and sad in the eyes of other students. My goodness the comments I used to receive, but here we are how the times have changed. We are all looking to thrift stores as the solution for sustainability which is wonderful. I am so glad that I was doing something right from the start at a time when it was not so popular with everyone a time before it was all "Cool and hipster". This video and all the comments are so satisfactory to watch and read.

Ways to prevent first hand fashion if thrifting is not an option for you:
    - look in your parents wardrobe or in your own and maybe find stuff that you can upcycle or straight up wear.
    - if you have little holes in your clothes or if they're damaged, don't throw them away-sew them! (or symply crop stuff)
    - buy things that are high quality so they can last longer
    - if you'll still in growth, try buying oversized stuff that will still fit you in a few years even if your body changes.
    - if there are no thrift stores around you try apps like ebay (in Germany we have Kleiderkreisel. That's a great app!).
If you don't have thrift stores in your area you can go in one when you're visiting a different city. (Simply look in the Internet) And I have a really bad and grandma looking thrift store in my area but I found some cute flannels there in the men's section so if you have a thrift store and don't find anything, go look at the opposite gender section if you don't already do (clothes don't have a gender tf)
    Anyways...hope this helps

Hey Polyester has it's uses! Polyester is great in long-wear clothing where traditional fibres would breakdown too quickly leading to a paradoxical increase in waste. It's particularly useful for hard labour work wear, certain athletic goods, and applications where flame or chemical resistance are useful. It's also popular as a more robust version of silk or lace, but admittedly that's more of an aesthetic value than utilitarian. It's important to consider use and longevity of an item before dismissing it based on the use of plastic!

Since I'm really into alternative fashion from the 80s and 90s, I started buying clothes at second hand/ vintage shops when I was about 15 and it works really well for me even on a low budget (20 now)... So many people give away their perfectly fine clothes cause they're not fashionable anymore its ridiculous! I still buy fast fashion underwear and things like that but i wanna try to get more into fair trade/sustainable fashion for those things not available second hand! :) Love that you are spreading awareness on this issue! In the end we don't just have to change the way we as individuals consume but the whole economic system, which is inevitably leading to explotation of the working class and our environment!

The funny thing is it doesn't even save us money! The clothes we buy from these brands breakdown quickly and often stay in a closet for only 2 years. Sadly two years is a generous estimation as many products being to look terrible after only a handful of washes. It's impossible to know exactly how a garment is produced or even if the fibres are sufficient to make it last. There's no really good solution beyond regulation.

Thank you so much for this video. I never actually participated in fast fashion. I wear my clothes for years and years. However that is no longer enough. The clothing industry is the second largest pollution factor worldwide. When I see some of the price expectations on youtube I’m shocked because people really do not seem to think. Cutting out and sewing a T-shirt takes me about 90 minutes. Where I live that would mean 18 Euros minimum wage. But the fabric needs to be produced, died and woven or knitted. It all needs to be shipped from farm to spinning to weaving to sewing and then to the shop. If it is a brick and mortar shop rent and sales assistants have to be payed. You would start to think 50 Euros for a bog standard t-shirt was a steal.

Mary Charlebois Immy is a force for good! The weather here is great, we’ve had some rain and colder days but it’s 23C today and wall to wall sunshine ☀️ I hope the snow is finally leaving you or at least the temperature has a + in front of the number 🤞It’s a 3 day weekend here to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day when WW2 ended in Europe, so I’m enjoying a couple of drinks and some RUclips while my husband is playing video games upstairs. Lockdown is still in force but a local farm shop has been open so I’ve managed to get some plants for the garden and some herb and tomato plants so I’ll be able to grow some stuff this year. I hope you and your partner are happy and healthy and you can get outside and enjoy some better weather. Stay safe xxx

@@lindatait5326 Local farm shop... open? I’m drooling!! You are lucky indeed!! It was -5 here this morning but plants are doing their thing in the greenhouse and Spring is here during the daytime. No gardening yet (still too early and too cold). All the wildlife is out roaming around, but no bugs...YET! Have a lovely long weekend my friend.

thank you for making such an important video! nowadays ultra fast fashion brands like Fashionova are gaining even more ground thanks to social media. As long as they keep on making cheap and trendy unfortunately people will still buy from them out of convenience. But being more aware of the impacts of fast fashion is one of the best way to help us make better decisions

If you're from Australia and reading this I suggest boycotting cotton, our freshwater is being sold to cotton farms while the rest of our farmlands and forests dry up. Cotton is one of the most water intensive fabrics and as per the video requires pesticides and chemicals. I suggest opting for organic cotton (better practices) or secondhand cotton. Depop is a great app for purchasing in season clothes secondhand

You don't need to buy so many garments. Just define your style, stick to it and buy good quality so it stays like new after many washes.
When you invest on a good piece of garment you will be very careful selecting it and making sure you love it. When a garment is cheap it is easier to buy it even if you half like it. And most likely you wear it only once and then forgotten in your drawer or closet.

I bought a sewing machine 4 years ago and I've been learning all kinds of things about sewing since. I still need to get a dress form, then I might have more confidence to make clothes for myself. I did make clothes for my child, and she was happy to wear them. I did make underwear for myself. The shorts I made aren't the best, but a learning experience, I wear them around the house. I make a lot of zipper pouches and stuff that are practical for me.

It has become such a habit to repair clothes, buy thrifted and save up for Fairtrade or locally produced items; I don't even think about it anymore. I would never consider going back to fast fashion! I have even saved money since making the switch since I don't buy clothes nearly as often now. I recommend this switch to everyone able to try!

THANK YOU for mentioning luxury brands at the end there, I'll have to find the video where you go more into detail about it. I think people often leave out luxury brands in the sustainable fashion debate because cheap, fast fashion brands are more prevalent or more accessible to the majority of the population. By omitting the equally as horrendous practices coming from brands like Gucci, YSL and more, people start to equate spending more on luxury clothing with higher quality and better practices.

Thank you so much for this video. People need to know this stuff. Whether buying from ethical brands or secondhand, the clothes are often better quality and much more interesting than fast fashion (I want to wave a flag for your geometric jumper here!). I’ve often been tempted by fast fashion because it’s cheap, even plus size stuff - but I’ve kicked the habit now, and my wardrobe is better for it. Interesting that as usual the same people abusing animals abuse people too. When people ask if I care more about animals than people (because I’m vegan) I explain that it’s the same fight - many companies finance the abuse of both people and animals. Thank you again, you wonderful woman! Xxx

I didn’t realize it at the time, but Zara was the famous jacket that Melania wore that had ‘I don’t care so why should you’ (or was it the other way around I forget...) when they went to visit the children. It was thought she didn’t care about them, but she was making a statement about Child Labor. She would never have worn such a cheap jacket. When I found out about Zara and the rest I then learned more. Thank you, great video.

I also think that fast fashion creates a deceptive view on money/price and quality. I grew up buying from brands like Primark and going to fast fashion shops with my mum because it was inexpensive and that’s what we needed. But when I started shopping for myself and saw nice quality clothing from sustainable brands I looked at the prices in shock because I was used to my clothing being cheap, and had to change my perception on money as well as my clothes

Amazing job, Immy! I live in Spain and here its not so cheap to buy secondhand, and for me its not always an option to buy sustainably made clothes because they tend to be more expensive. It is hard for me many times to get an item that I need or want, but I rather spend longer looking for a particular item than take a shortcut and look for a fast fashion one.
Thank you for this video, it showed me that its worth the effort that I make not to buy fast fashion♥️♥️

You know the worst part? In my country, where purchasing power is way lower than in the Western world, you won't spend less than $30 in Zara and any Inditex brand. Maybe you'll get the most basic strapless basic top for $10 on sale, but you can expect to find most items for $50-$200, which is honestly awful.

I learned to sew to truly value my clothing and eliminate the exploitation of workers as much as I can (obviously fabric production is another issue). I have not thrown out a single scrap of fabric, nor have I thrown out a single thread. I keep everything because I know I can use any scrap as patches, or to fill a cushion, anything really. I believe any little bit that avoids the landfill helps.
