Thanks so much for doing this. I imagine this will not be the most popular video, but it's something I'm guessing most, myself included, would have never even thought about before. Buying the part now, thanks again.
Wow…Here I’ve been thinking for years that the trunk just opens fast 🤦🏻♂️ lol. It doesn’t bounce at all so I thought it was just normal… Thanks so much for another great video!
Oh damn!… Thankfully I’ve only opened my trunk a handful of times throughout the past few years (when detailing) and usually use my hand to stop it from opening so rapidly… Only 34k miles on her now and the previous owner only put 1k miles on her in a three year period (garage queen that wasn’t daily driven) so the wiring should still be in good shape. Thanks so much for the information! Already have the new spring ordered 👍🏻
Thanks for this - the boot opening too quickly on my 2006 E60 M5 was bugging me, this is the perfect fix. FYI believe the aftermarket part used was Tuff Support 613612; I was able to find at FCP euro.
I did this one last fall before it was stored. Definitely a quick easy fix. However I just got owned by my blower motor dying and FSU going out. Now, that would make for an interesting video with your M5. Little secret, you don’t have to take out the center console or mess with the passenger side foot well.
thank you so much mate, I had an issue where the trunk would open fully but not stay up, it would sag halfway and it was a real pain getting the stroller out for my kid every time it happened hahaha
I wish I knew this when I had the first generation E60 BMW made. It was filled with issues including a really bad case of this. It was so bad you could get chinned by the boot if you're half asleep and it was more powerful than the later generations for some reason. I have this now on a 2008 E60 and it's not as bad as your before example.
Nice vid. Is there a way to tune that initial launch pressure? Mine isn’t bouncy, so much as it really aggressively wants to be open - e.g. I throw a charger on the battery, I have to put a 20kg on the lid to keep it from opening.
@@MTechGuy as near as I can tell with my remote battery sensor, the Noco I use will pulse at 30v to charge the battery which is what I assume causes the ecus to go pear shaped.
@@MTechGuyI was about to ask this, last year my hubby replaced this with a frankberg one. My son last week slammed the boot out of anger and I heard a snap I thought it was just the strut but it turns out today I looked that the fabric cover in the boot is not in line, I took it off to see what looks like the strut cracked and the metal has been pulled away and snapped from the car. I thought maybe I can put a strut on the left side to remedy this. Maybe he installed it too tight? Was creaking for a while before it snapped. Any advice?
Im getting crazy. On every video it looks so easy, but im just getting less than 1 inch to short so it will not click pffff. 05:20 I see that you use a screwdriver to whip it on, but it just does not work for me at this point. Will try again later.
@@MTechGuy It worked out for me in the while my dad was helping holding the trunk up. Also pushed it a bit with a screwdriver. Thank you for your video.
The part you bought is junk. The trunk should open in 1 smooth movement, not have a pause in the middle. There are no jobber equivalent to the original 51247141490 damper, sadly.
But it’s not junk is it- it served its purpose to stop the boot opening violently. If you want to pay $200 USD for a genuine BMW boot shock vs $35 USD which will do the job, cool, go ahead. It’s your car, do as you like
Great detailed description on how to get this fixed.
Thanks for checking out the video man

Most of them will be getting like this now. Don’t leave it, because it can wreck the wiring between the vehicle body and the boot lid

Great DIY!!! I didn’t think I’d need this but after viewing this I am getting the parts myself! 🎉

Just did mine! Much better now!
It makes a huge difference aye!

No worries, getting a stroller in and out is awkward enough, without the boot lid trying to bite you in the process! Glad the video helped you out 👍

@@jm3363 Mine used to flick up with a fair bit of force before carrying out this repair
Perfect timing for me. My 535d has a similar problem but much quicker at opening. Thanks
No problem 👍
Great Video man...I am going to do this one. Love the easy ones like this!
Cheers Johnny, thanks for watching
Definitely on my to do list. 👍
Good job to get done, if left too long it can wreck the boot lid wiring harness
@@MTechGuy The exact reason I want to sort it. A job I really don't want to do.😂
Great video! Do you have a link for your spoiler??
@@makavelithedon27 Cheers, spoiler is factory, original to the car
Lovely !
👍
Many thanks.
What’s the part number for the shock absorber?
Part number in the description 👍
I just thought e60s did that lol cheers !
Most do nowadays, but not supposed too!
My car has the same issue. I will fix it as soon as possible. Is the OEM BMW part still available or is it discontinued?
Most have at the age they are at now. Yeah the OE BMW one’s are still available
@@MTechGuy Thank you very much. I will replace it on my car soon.
Hi. You put the f10 Part in the Video Description. Ist that Right ? Does it fit?
Need answer
Part number in the description is for an E60

The spring on the right hand side of the boot is adjustable. I use the charge points in the engine bay
@@MTechGuy I used to, but the charger I use angers the smg and pdc ecus, so now I just disconnect the battery and let it charge alone.
It’s funny you mention that, mine does the same sometimes if I use the CTEK charger

Interesting!
Is there only a gas only on the right side?
Yes 👍
Replaced both anyway. Thanks

Today I replaced my shock with a new oem BMW part and there is no difference, it still opens as fast as before. Any idea?
Like to know your outcome. I replaced mine as well and it still opens quickly.
Lol bro what are you bored? I actually like how my trunk flies open quickly.
Excellent
