My boot opens like batman chasing penguin. Feels like it's going to smash the back window. I've never done anything to any car but you make this look so simple!👀 Well done for a great informative video, superb.👏👏👏
Hello Colin, haha that cracked me up 🤣. Thank so much for your comment Colin im so pleased that you liked the video and found it informative. When I receive comments like that it makes it all feel worthwhile 👍👍
I'm getting water constantly in my bk driver passenger floor. It's defo not coming through the window or door. Battery compartment completely dry. I hover the floor daily to remove water&yet it returns. No rain for a few days, that's how I know its not leaking anywhere. I would appreciate your advice, cheers.
Hi Collin, if you're sure it's not coning from the window or door I would have a look at the drain plug in the floor. Have a look under the car and you should see the plug....or not. It could have come out and exposed the the carpet to the elements and puddles. Let me know how you get on Colin.
Great video. It may be a good idea to place a towel or something similar over the positive terminal of the battery before doing this in the event that the spring makes contact with the terminal.
After reading all the comments about people doing this repair and still having the same problem with the aftermarket parts I’m going to just wait and get the OEM BMW part, I tried a few of the aftermarket parts and they are just junk they don’t slow the trunk opening down at all it’s just as bad as the old one
Good video to show the spring/shock replacement. However, my E60 trunk/boot did the fast opening since day 1 when the car was brand new from Germany. Go figure......
Brilliant video , you made things easier. Quick question I have a Same problem but when i changed the spring ( right hand side) I still have Same problem nothing change. I was wondering might I need to change both sides. I appreciate your advice. Thank you
Hi Scott, thank you for your comment I really appreciate it! Hmmm that's strange 🤔 I say that because only one side has the damper. The other side (left) is just a spring. It's the damper that slows the opening of the boot. Could be possible that the new one is faulty too. Is it a brand new spring and damper? Might be worth turning the new spring around too. Give that a go first to see if that makes a difference and let me know mate. If you need any more advice let me know 👍
I had the same problem after putting in a new spring/shock absorber I just returned it to Amazon. It made absolutely no difference from the old one opening way too fast. Then I read comments about these things and the aftermarket units do not work like the OEM. Or it’s very difficult to find an aftermarket part that works just like the OEM most people complain the trunk still opens too fast
It still bounces a bit 6:02. Mine does bounce even a bit more with the new cheapest absorber I found (still a lot better than without properly functioning one). Which brings me to my question, is there some comparison between different brand shock absorbers, which gives the smoothest trunk opening?
@priit7777 Oh really! That's strange, I would have thought that would have fixed the issue. As far as I'm aware there isn't any comparison videos with the different absorbers.
@@TheBimmerFixer lad ya have some good videos here well done honestly it's great to have some good help I like to fix alot of stuff myself and I just bought a BMW E60 yesterday and need s one or 2 bits

@Alvin Tobe I believe they are slightly different in the e63. I think you have 2x Gas struts in the trunk but the process of replacing the is the same as in my video. Hope that helps.
Hi Steven, if the car is unlocked by pressing and holding the button at the bottom on your key fob should pop the boot door open. Let me know if that doesn't work.
Hi mate, that's really strange 🤔 there definitely should be. Someone must have removed it for some reason. Sometimes they can make a horrible noise when they get worn out so that might of been the case instead of replacing it.
Bought a 3rd party replacement spring/shock from ebay. Doesn't appear to resolve the issue. Lid opens even more violently than with old shock! Did you make any changes to the basic spring on the nearside of the boot? I notice it has adjustment latches on it. I've let the tension off that spring as much as possible by putting it in the nearest latch to the front of the car but the lid still opens violently and bounces around!
@Riverlino Thats so strange!! The force and strength applied to open the boot door is all down to that spring and shock I didn't have to adjust anything else just rellaced the spring and shock. Im sure its the only thing it can be. There is nothing else physically strong enough to open the door that is attached to it. The only way the boot is still opening now the way you described would suggest that the shock in the new one is faulty. Sorry if that doesn't help much, sounds like those struts are faulty.
@@TheBimmerFixer yeah, I think it's either faulty or just cheap crap that isn't fit for purpose. Strange thing is the one you linked to in this video is half the price I paid for the one I bought on ebay. Its pot luck I think. No option but to return and will try the one from the seller you bought from. Anyway thanks for the video, very useful guide
@Rivelino Yeah sounds like you've been really unlucky! Good luck with the other part please keep me posted on your progress and if you have any more questions or queries just let me know. Thanks for your comments too! Really appreciate it 👍🏻
@Ian Totterdell In that case I would say the spring and shock have lost their strength and can't lift the boot door anymore. If you replace the same part I did in mine you should be good to go 👍
@@TheBimmerFixer Other way around, if the trunk doesn't open all the way it means the springs are too weak to overcome the gas strut. Mine did this after replacing the strut on the right side, strut was too strong. I adjusted the spring on the left to a higher setting to increase the tension which fixed it. The struts job is to give the trunk downwards resistance and oppose the springs.
Yep. It will cut the wires running in the trunk pipe. Out of 8 wires, 5 were cut. Symptoms: Trunk won't open at all(only with the key, because it physically pulls the lock mechanism), motor running in opposite direction, no tail plate lights, warning that trunk is open.
Lol same issue here and i thought that was normal haha on my way to order a new spring. Thanks for the video!
