It’s been my experience that they will give you exactly what you ask for unless you ask them to elevate it. That second cake was beautiful, but it wasn’t on theme with the right colors or flowers. Most people want to be heard, more than they want improvements.
So to add another layer to that challenge send them two pictures of one star cakes under two different names, ask one to be elevated and don’t say anything on the other.
The shape can be forgiven as a misunderstanding of the picture… but the colors!! Omg sooooo different! If you have a palette for the wedding this would completely mess it up!
I agree the shape would be disappointing for the couple but your guests aren’t going to know that the cake was supposed to be square but it’s going to be really obvious that this is the complete wrong color compared to the rest of the wedding.
The fact the second changed the colours so dramatically on a wedding cake, literally the one event most people really colour coordinate, is unforgivable. Definitely 1 star.
Exactly!! If I had to guess I'd say their skills are definitely past that of a 1-star bakery but they probably have that rating for their communication/delivery. A great cake doesn't mean much if it's practically unusable or not what someone ordered!
the second one would def send me into hulk mode, lol. but I don't think even the first one got the colors right, let alone the height and flowers. very sad all around.
@@bugguyonline They didn't even get the bottom tier that well, though. The colors look more bland/dark and look smeared rather than a nice swirly marble pattern. I'm surprise she didn't say anything about it, looked like a little kid's finger painting. I would not pay for either of those cakes. Neither were a good representation of what was requested.
Not true we asked for a square wedding cake and they gave us a round so the scrolls looked weird on it. Supose to match thr invitations that are square... this was 2009. As a baker I gave them 3 out of 5 since tasted amazing, colors were right just the shape was wrong so the design looked off.
My thoughts on the 2nd cake.....if I were to request that cake with the pastel color reflecting the wedding theme and I received the bright coral color, I'd be very upset.
@@purpleclaws202 because it was a supposed wedding cake it's supposed to match the colour theme people spend thousands on decorations in that colour scheme then for the cake to be a different colour ruins the theme
@@purpleclaws202so? It’s a wedding cake, the aesthetic is more important in that context than the taste (even though the taste is definitely important too) - people spend hundreds of dollars on wedding cakes because it’s their wedding! And it’s important to them that things all look on theme
1. I’m not a baker at all but I am a designer and definitely notice the aesthetic difference between the buttercream plaster look vs marble and the buttercream plaster is infinitely prettier 2. I would be wayyyy more upset about the colors versus the shape if I were a bride asking for pastels and got “Barbie birthday bash” 😂😂 Entertaining none the less though lol
I think I'd like to see the two 5 star bakeries follow up. But same prompt, same order. Just send the reference photos and see what you get. See if you get 2 similar cakes or 2 completely different like you have here, it'd be interesting to see
My husband Aunt insisted on making our wedding cake. We wanted white chocolate lemon. We got a very dense, very dry (think biscuit with dry icing) vanilla cake. No lemon at all. It's been 7 years and it still bums me out
Lol my cousin let her sister in law make their wedding cake. It looked pretty....but it was a unflavoured dry ass cake with NO FROSTING and a wall paper thick fondant thrown above it.
@@Carpathianpixie not me. I would have brought it up for every little thing very time she or her side of the family opened their mouths. I am petty af.
In fairness to the 2nd bakery, I also didn’t know it was a square cake just based on the picture, it looked quite round to me🤷🏼♀ But as far as the first bakery goes, I hated it to be honest, it looked nothing like the reference, if I was expecting the picture and got that, I would send it back🙈
@@seadragonpirate8195 a cylinder looks like a square if you take the picture directly from the front tho. Especially when the right lighting condition is met.
You hated the first one compared to the second one because it doesn’t look like the reference at all?? The first one look s a lot more like the reference than the second. You can excuse the wrong shape but color palettes are extremely important especially for weddings! Everything is color coordinated at weddings!
As someone who’s a florist (handmaking products like cakes) I feel like it’s hard to get exact. I always tell my customers, it will be similar but not exact same because it is handmade. I ask what they like about their inspiration photo so that I know what is important to them. Shape, colours, flowers, the overall aesthetic. When people say “I want this” it’s hard to grasp every single detail.
Well flowers are very different than cakes. You can color match, and shape match. If you don’t have the pans, you can cut it to size. I’m currently growing flowers for my wedding, so I hear you, but as a baker, absolutely not.
@@ThunderStruck15 Are you a baker as well? I’m just saying as a creator, I believe it to be very difficult to hand arrange just from a photo. I’m just seeing the end result, not how they got there. Structure changes everything. I know changing the shape of the cake was drastic. But I also see it from a creators view. I often get told “I like this” with a photo and I just ask them to break it down so we’re clear. I learned from past mistakes that everyone has their own interpretation.
right! who can replicate something someone else made. no one! I used to enjoy watching these videos. times are hard and she's basically bashing the cakes and bakers who made these cakes, and lets be honest shes getting paid to do this to these bakers. she's not paying out of HER pocket which makes it even worse. I'm glad the bakeries arent named. she'd be in a sh!t load of letigation
@@cynthiasoto264 Uhm, they did not deliver on the order. Shape I can see how they missed the squareness. I'd expect them to look at the image more closely, but at first glance you can miss it's a square cake. But the colours? For a wedding, which is typically a very colour coordinated event, to go so far away from the picture in terms of colour? They went from pastel pink and white to hot pink and orange. That is not just a screen brightness issue. And then there's the flavours. If you order something and they deliver something else, you are fully in your right to put them on blast.
@@AnnekeOosterink The majority of people who are purchasing a cake for a wedding will have a tasting before doing so. Taste ,flavors colors and designs are all subjective. This is exactly why bakers ask for swatches, and more than just a Screen shot of a photo when doing wedding cakes, at least that's what I do, a photo just isnt enough and even with all of that done, there's no way youre gonna get something replicated to a T. Thank goodness the cake didn't actually cost you anything... that would've sucked
i thought the inspiration photo was a round cake! i didn’t know it was square until you said something so maybe the second bakery thought it was round too. beautiful cakes though 🥰🫶🏻
To be fair, for the second bakery, i think they didn't know its square as you didn't specify. From the image, it looks circle from the side view. Unless they have like a 3d view of it, i doubt they would have known it's a square cake.
The first cake was all vanilla even though they asked for another flavor. That kind of ruins it especially if you actually had this for your wedding. 375 bucks is still a lot.
I agree, only complaints is the size and flavor. Everything else looked close to the photo. Second cake is unforgivable cause of the drastic color change.
This drastic difference in opinion may be why theyre still open and making cakes, because I hate it even without knowing what the inspo photo was and especially dislikedthat they kept insisting she provide the flowers for the cake herself! :/
I would be upset at getting round cakes instead of square, but that could be forgiven. However, I admit I would be ENRAGED if I ordered a subtle, beautiful cake like the one you provided them in the picture, and instead got this loud, Hawaiian Luau cake instead. Plus, the border around the second tier was sloppy. I think I understand the 1 Star. *Loved this video!!!*
If I had to choose, it would have to be the first one. The second one is more impressive with the height and flowers, but color is everything. The first one matched the color scheme perfectly, and if the wedding does have a theme, the second cake could seriously clash and look tacky.
The second cake is a pretty twist on the inspiration photo, but if this was meant to be my actual wedding cake, I'd be really upset that the colors didn't match the inspiration photo. Weddings have color themes.
@Christina Sloan I don’t know why that would change the color palette though. If someone sends you a photo of a pastel pink and lilac cake and tells you to do something a little different with the design of the top tier, that doesn’t mean you change the entire cake’s color palette. That means that you simply do a different design (like they did) but keep the same color scheme.
@Christina Sloan But that doesn't mean change ALL the colours. Even if the colours on their screen are off or brighter, you can still see it's not hot pink, but light pink.
@Christina Sloan exactly! You do not tell a bakery to "get creative" with your wedding cake. You go into the bakery with pictures, colour swatches, and anything else you can find as your example. You don't send in one picture and say "get creative" because my creative and your creative could be 2 different things.
The first bakery got the colour scheme right and the square part right. It's definitely a bit short and could use more flowers. It looks like a reasonable attempt to recreate the image. It still looks like a wedding cake. The second bakery was wildly off base in terms of colours, and looks better suited for a summer birthday party. The height and the flowers are nice, but it's not what you asked for. Personally, if I made the request you did, I would be more satisfied with the cake from the first bakery than the second.
Totally agree. Even though I would be upset about the flavours being off on the 1st cake at least the look of the cake would fit into the wedding decor (assuming a bride sent the pic in and said she wanted the cake to be like the inspiration cake). The second cake is so off from the look in terms of colour and shape.
@@martasorangeberry I would disagree. The cake is a central piece of the reception. As long as it tastes good you can get away without perfection. You can't pass off a Hawaiian decorated cake as a wedding cake. It wouldn't match anything regardless of how ok it tastes after the fact.
In terms of aesthetics, the first cake is actually pretty beautiful and I could see this working in a more causal styled wedding. Love the beautiful pinks and beautiful marbling
The first cake: closer to the reference look wise. However, I would have been upset to end up with a vanilla cake instead of the flavors that I would have wanted. Second cake: While the color scheme is more for a summer birthday party than a wedding, at least there’s more height and flowers. Also, they did provide different cake flavors that’s not vanilla.
If I ordered my wedding cake, wanted a specific flavor and got a different flavor especially plain vanilla I would be FURIOUS..especially if your paying the amount of money that most bakeries charge
Agreed. Especially if you order a specific thing because of allergies. I mean, if it's an allergy you'd normally specify what someone can't have, but would they remember that? Or would they get my husband a cake with chocolate on it, even if we specifically asked for no chocolate because he's allergic?
Man, I would have been disappointed with both cakes! The second one I also saw a seam at the back where the white strip of fondant didn’t connect. I can see why both were rated 1 star. If I had to pick for looks I would choose cake 1. If it was for taste (based on your assessment) I would choose cake 2
Honestly the first time you flashed the picture I didn’t look very hard at it and at first glance, with that perspective… it definitely can be mistaken for ‘round’ I would be very upset if I got a colorful wedding cake that was the wrong color. That hot pink/coral is honestly a nightmare
I feel like the first bakery did a much better job with the color pallet. That to me is important for the esthetic of the wedding. The second one looks "cleaner" and has more flowers.. but honestly... I'd be upset to spend so much money on a cake where the shape and the color was wrong, no matter how well made it was.
I don't know... they were both rather sloppy in appearance. The fondant ribbon (I don't know what it's called) on the second cake when you turned it around had a gap. I was waiting for you to point it out! How they could take an order & provide either of these cakes is astonishing.
Fondant work is also very bumpy. Not enough spent on smoothing and getting out all the little ridges. Wondering what the side looks like where the flowers are, because usually you would add the decor to the worst side.
I actually do, used to sell cakes. And I have had my fair share of mishaps and redo's and baking a new cake, with 5 hours to delivery, which in itself is a recipe for disaster. I just wouldn't put something forward if I wasn't happy with it. There are aspects of these cakes I would not be happy with. 🤷♀️
I'd love to see a 1* vs 2* vs 3* vs 4* vs 5* cake off. I like the high end vs low end cake offs but am curious where the middle-end cakes would fall in your opinion.
You didn't tell us the cost of the round cake. It would be interesting to see if price affected quality. I liked the first cake best as a wedding cake, but yes, it should have been taller.
The bakery I work for is only 4.6 star, but that’s amazing for a family owned small buisness. And my boss got that score because she takes extra time conversing with the brides, both through email and in person, to make sure they get exactly what they want on their wedding day. And if by chance they aren’t satisfied (which rarely happens) she does everything she can to fix the problem if it’s within her limits and that more than makes up for it. I think more communication is all these 1 star bakeries need to get better scores, because they clearly have the talent.
Anything above 4.0 is pretty decent. And anything above 4.5 is pretty good. Any higher and it'd have to be superb or they are inflating their scores some way or another. You can't satisfy everyone, and some people are super nit-picky, while there are others who refuse to give full 5* reviews unless everything is 100% perfect and the slightest stain anywhere would drop the score down. You also sometimes get other people who will review bomb for some reason or another (eg. Turning down a last second order/request, canceling after complete radio silence for extended periods). So that 4.6 is a score to be pretty proud of, in my opinion anyway
I think I'd have to go with the first one - it definitely has more of a wedding LOOK... and it sounds like it has the boring wedding cake TASTE too LOL. I really liked this video! It's nice having a comparison of wedding cakes from venues that aren't catering to the rich bridezilla thing! I wonder what a 1-star vs 1-star birthday cake bake-off would look like?
I honestly think that the most important take-away from something like that is for artists of any kind to be realistic about what they can deliver. If you don't feel 100% confident that you can make the exact same cake, say it! Customers might be fine with it or if you could deliver something better at a higher price you could offer that. But don't take on projects you kinda already know will not turn out ❤ this is exactly what facilitates those 1-star reviews, not them somehow being generally 1-star people or bad bakers, both cakes we've seen need a good amount of skill to look as they do.
@@purpleclaws202 cakes can be pretty all they want but if they taste bad its useless. in the end, food is supposed to taste to your preference (hopefully). if it isnt, you wont want to eat it
@delianjay7375 $375 for a handmade cake with hand sculpted edible flowers and a very difficult icing technique is not unfair at all. maybe try picking up an art lol
I could easilly see how the picture could be a round cake since it's a perfect profile. Take the flowers from Cake 2 and put them on Cake 1 and you have mostly what you asked for. Lol. The first one is definitely better overall.
How much was the second cake? I think the first cake matched the colour scheme of the photo you provided, but the second one did better with the flowers and height of the cake. Really love this series! ❤️❤️ it’s so interesting to see how two different bakeries with the same rating interpret the order :)
I really thought that the inspo cake was round, so I can't fault the bakery for doing a round cake. Plus, I think the round cake was prettier overall and had two related, yet different tiers.
It's prettier yes, but it's a completely different vibe and color from the inspo. This is very fun and summer, the inspiration doesn't look like that. If the inspiration was a part of the wedding theme, the 2nd cake ruined that.
As a professional baker who specializes in wedding cakes, both of these made me cringe. The first was closer to the colors of the cake you sent (which was easily identifiable as a tall square cake), but, I wouldn’t say that the second didn’t look like a wedding cake because of the coloring. I find that more and more brides are choosing bolder colors for their cakes, and I often do wedding cakes that are black, navy, or other bold colors. Both cakes used bought sugar flowers vs handmade, and neither did well with them. The first didn’t have enough, and was sloppy. The second had awkward placing, chunky stems with no movement to them, just straight sticks, too thick, with yellow fondant and leaves proportionally too small. The way they were attached lacked finesse as well. I find that fondant covered boards look more professional (when done right) but the first cake didn’t do it well. Unfortunately, both cakes missed the mark for me!
The second one is hideous! For that price... the first is pretty awful too. It's amazing to me how much people charge and STILL manage to get it wrong!
Thank you! I couldn’t believe the sheer amount of ppl saying that cake looked round in the photo. Not even close. It was actually rectangular not square. It had sharp and pronounced corners. As for the bakery just deciding they were going to do a white/vanilla cake without any cause….was absolutely unthinkable. Using pressed sugar flowers is fine, but you need to still give them some personality and movement. They looked fake because of the way they were painted and arranged. As for the round cake…the colors were unacceptable. Brides have a certain palette for their weddings and having a cake that clashes with the dresses, decor and table dressings is absolutely a no no.
They both are beautiful cakes. However, the first one is most like the other. The second looks like a birthday or party. I have never seen a cake as pretty as either of them. I live in a rural area, for weddings they usually get a grocery store flate cake. So needless to say I am totally impressed with them.
Honestly, I think both cakes turned out pretty. Wildly different, but an interesting interpretation. Personally, if I had sent the photo you did for my *wedding*, I would be incredibly upset with cake two. A soft purple and pink with splashes of gold is so very different than the color palette for cake two. Weddings generally have a color scheme and I could see those bold, bright colors clashing pretty epically. Now, with that being said, for $375 (I won’t even say how much my wedding cake to feed 100 people was… but it was ridiculously delicious and worth every penny!), I think these bakers did a decent job of recreating the vision. So glad to have you back in my RUclips feed!!! Your videos make me smile and relax… two things that are so needed. Thank you so much for creating such amazing content. ❤️
See...im a baker so I saw a square cake from the original photo. So I'd be upset too. I also would have clarified with the bride. The vanilla cake...ohh I'd have been livid as a bride that my flavors weren't there! The second cake...WAY TOO MUCH PINK! It's pretty, but doesn't look like the photo.
That's my thought, the color would have made me too upset and just walk out... the flavor I would have been really upset about later, but at least it matched colors.
I’m not a baker and I could completely tell from first glance that was a square cake. The front of the face is so flat and the edges are really sharp/crisp, even with the decorations blocking a good chunk of them. Even in a well lit studio, if you know what shadows & highlights look like on a 3D form, it’s plain to see. It’s like sitting a cardboard box with the same dimensions in the same lighting, then still thinking it’s somehow a cylinder.
When you showed the inspiration cake, I didn’t realize it was square until you said it. They were both pretty, almost wish the colors of the square cake were on the round cake…only square…because that would have matched your request more. Would love 5 star vs. 5 star!
I used to be a florist, and I worked with a manager who was a boutique florist, and one who was a florist from a cheap grocery store chain who went to work in a boutique floral shop. When I worked with the boutique florist, she would follow the brief exactly, and any difference between the brief and her finished product ended up being an improvement to the design in a way that still fit the brief. When I worked with the other one from the grocery store she would say that it didn't need to match what they ordered. We could just do the same colors because the customer should know that it wouldn't look exactly like the picture. Her designs were often a different shape than what the person ordered. It seems to me like a similar situation here.
Aside from the cake being round instead of square… there are a few things that made my Type A perfectionism crazy (decor only, not only that the square cake dialed it in on the cake itself) are: 1. that gap in the white band around the top layer 2. The two weird antenna that are meant to be branches, 3. The sloppiness of covering the wires, 4. the color choice and of course 5. IT IS ROUND! Can’t wait for the next video!
I would love to see you have 1 star bakeries do goth themed wedding cakes. Although 5 star bakeries would be just as fun. There are some beautiful dark wedding cakes out there. Thank you for bringing us these wonderfully fun videos. 💕
I would have never known that example cake was square from that photo, dang. These are so fun, I love the 1 vs 1 star, and that you're not roasting them or saying anything rude just because they're poorly rated.
You immediately credited multiple people that came up with original idea! The fact this isnt normal is shocking to me. I love looking for more inspiration in life. I love being linked to more people!
To be fair, both a round and square cake look veeery similar when directly photographed form the front. I didnt notice your inspo cake was square either.
I have a part time job working with weddings at a local renaissance festival. When working with couples, we are as wildly detailed about everything as we can be. If a bride says “I want my cake or flowers like this” and gives a picture, we are asking for that picture or a copy of said picture, to them make notes on. We ask a crazy amount of questions. For someone to not ask questions or very few questions to a bride or couple, makes me a bit suspicious. I know we all look at and see things differently and my friends I that work with and I are constantly asking questions to our boss or the couple or the mother of the bride. To do what we can to make this wedding the best day of their life. (At least the best day of their life for now. Future children, college graduation and so, on a side) I think more questions should have been asked by both baker and or bakeries.
I could totally see that the inspiration cake was square. The colors of the second cake were not even close, but the flowers were pretty. I would be disappointed if they got the flavor wrong. My favorite flavor for wedding cake is vanilla with lemon curd filling and buttercream frosting.
it's interesting how they each have what the other lacks. one is square (good), the other is spherical (bad). one doesn't have enough flowers (bad), but the other has just enough flowers (good). one fit the color scheme (good), but lacked a unique perspective for the second tier as requested (bad). whereas the other didn't quite fit the color scheme (bad), but did have a unique perspective for the second tier as requested (good). one didn't really have the flavors requested (bad), but the other did (good). like if you combined them together, they'd almost be perfect.
Okay, trying to keep my opinions short: 1. As pointed out by other comments, because there was an assumption made about the shape of the cake rather than specifying you wanted square, challenges were still met to the best of the 2nd bakery’s ability. 2. Keeping in mind that you wanted crisp, clean edges on the square design, the 1st bakery lacked because not only did the surface droop, so did the edges & it looked like a muffin top from the front profile. 3. Give the 2nd bakery some credit- most modern weddings I’ve seen have shied away from traditional means cake-wise, be it design, color or flavor, so the fact that the elements asked for were still met gives it the stronger edge. Personally, based on a closer match to the prompt, a closer match to the flavors & a closer match to technique, the 2nd bakery is a CLEAR winner in my book.
pls make more videos about this. i like how i know nothing about cake but i have eyes and common sense while you talk and explaining its very fun and relaxing to watch
The colours of the first cake are really pretty, and I like the height the second one with the extra flowers. With the flavours, maybe you could try guessing them and then Kevin let you know what they are and see how close you get to what they are supposed to be. :)
I would never have known the picture was a square cake if you didn't say anything. I think you should send the same picture (with the same instructions you gave the 1 star bakeries) to two 5-star bakeries and see what the difference is! That would be so interesting (plus I'm curious to see if they verify the shape with you).
In fairness to the 2nd bakery, I also didn’t know it was a square cake just based on the picture, it looked quite round to me🤷🏼♀️ But as far as the first bakery goes, I hated it to be honest, it looked nothing like the reference, if I was expecting the picture and got that, I would send it back🙈
I am not a baker, but I did notice the buttercream texture, and the square shape. As for the shape, if I was the customer I would be dissapointed but I can understand why the bakery thought that it was square. ...but there is absolutely no excuse for the flavour. If someone chose a particular flavour and they were promised that flavour, they should be delivered it.
I would have given the square cake a 3 star because they did square, kept with the color, and did really well with keeping close to your request, but did not give good flavors. I would have given the round cake a 2 star, because you wanted a square cake with pink and purple colors. If I ordered from the round bakery the cake would not March the wedding colors AT ALL, and that would really turn me in to a bridezila. The square cake may be a little underwhelming, but still matched everything. It would be interesting to see how the taste would have matched had you done tasting before ordering.
Cake 1 - The cake’s height is frumpy so it doesn’t even look like a wedding cake and is shorter than the one layer. I like the colors, but it needs some lavender. They could have decorated over some of the marbling with buttercream frosting. That would have added dimension, even if they would have added to the bottom layer only, which would have made the tiers somewhat different. I like the flowers, they’re whispy, not heavy, just needed to add more. However in the end, if the cake does not taste good and/or is not the flavor(s) ordered, it doesn’t matter what the cake looks like. Cake 2 - They made a two tier round cake instead of a two tier square cake. The height of cake is good, but the colors are not. They only used variations of pink, no lavender. Using dark, bold pink fondant on the top tier and the bottom tier’s fondant with different shades of pink, does make the tiers different. The flowers are pretty but makes the cake look heavy. A wedding cake can look anyway a couple wants, but this does not look like a wedding cake to me. I would choose cake 1.
Just found you! You are wonderful. I love how you don't put others down just for the sake of it but are still honest. I will continue to watch you. Thank you for the fun videos. I would love to see 5 star vs 5 star.
The cake in the picture didn't look like a square all round and could have been mistaken for being round. The issue is that it's the wrong color for a color coordinated event.
to be fair on the round cake, the angle the original picture was that of exactly 1 side was showing, and maybe they interpreted the picture differently. also, you gave them license to change things. You probably know most people think of wedding cakes as round, i feel like if the square was a must, that could have been specified, don't change the shape
The second cake is beautiful. You did not tell them it had to be square. Ok, the color pallet is off, but other than that, it is really well proportioned and finished. I would love it for my wedding.
The shape was off, the color was waaaay off, and it is the wrong texture, meaning it is marbled instead of splattered like she wanted. I can see why they are one star.
@@pachecodecastro2593 yeah the only thing is; This would not be what a person ordered. In my opinion you want to get as close as possible to what you wanted. Doesn’t mean it isn’t pretty, it’s just not the order.
@@romychar , that’s true. So I think bottom line is communication: a professional (in any line of work, I think) that is commissioned a “copy” of anything, should make it clear how precise she needs to be. Is it an inspiration only? Is she allowed to add her own touch? Is she capable of making a faithful reproduction? All required details should be in writing, if possible. But me, being an Aquarium, still would love that cake for my wedding. Have a great day.
I love you and have best videos and most best baker ever! Most special amazing blessing angel so proud of you of everything you accomplished over the the years xoxo 💕
I'm so glad I'm single. I absolutely DIED hearing those prices, lol. 'This cake was just 375 dollars', like I legit thought a wedding cake would be 200 tops. LOL. If I ever get married, sorry guests! You're getting defrosted supermarket cake :p
Me personally, I don’t like the first ones corners😢. But it is a very beautiful cake and I’m sure it tasted wonderful!!😜( the corners are rounded and in the example the coroners are sharp and clean.
I think they both turned out good and even though the bakeries are both one star you can tell based on what they did there is potential to get even better. I do think the baker(s) that worked on the first one has a bit more of a raw talent and perhaps a little better understanding of decorating techniques.
Haha loved this video. Here's an idea, although you wouldn't be able to taste, I think it would be a great way to get others involved. Maybe you could post a cake at the beginning of the month or on a certain day. Your viewers then have x amount of time to recreate and send in their pictures 🤷🏻♂️
That one start bakery cake was gorgeous. It was my style. I loved the splotchy gold on the leaves. It made them look kind of natural. I loved it. The most. The five star cake was tacky.

Oh my gawd yes also girl you have to have a life as well!
What would be cool is sending 5 star bakeries a picture of the one star cakes from the refrence photos and see how they elevate them
Omg yes
Brilliant!
that’s smart
It’s been my experience that they will give you exactly what you ask for unless you ask them to elevate it. That second cake was beautiful, but it wasn’t on theme with the right colors or flowers. Most people want to be heard, more than they want improvements.
So to add another layer to that challenge send them two pictures of one star cakes under two different names, ask one to be elevated and don’t say anything on the other.
The shape can be forgiven as a misunderstanding of the picture… but the colors!! Omg sooooo different! If you have a palette for the wedding this would completely mess it up!
As a former wedding planner, the first one is sad...the second is unforgivable!
The inspo photo does slightly look circular if you don't focus on the corner
I 100% agree but wouldn’t you study the picture for reference?
I agree the shape would be disappointing for the couple but your guests aren’t going to know that the cake was supposed to be square but it’s going to be really obvious that this is the complete wrong color compared to the rest of the wedding.
but did she say the same colours and if so its a picture not every one will see the same colors
Totally
the second one would def send me into hulk mode, lol. but I don't think even the first one got the colors right, let alone the height and flowers. very sad all around.
Agreed. The shape of the cake is more forgivable than the totally colour change.
Both of these thing can be prefented by talking to them, it not being the right tast would be a dealbreaker for me
The wrong shape won’t ruin your wedding aesthetic, the wrong color pallet absolutely will!
she said to make it different
@@bugguyonline They didn't even get the bottom tier that well, though. The colors look more bland/dark and look smeared rather than a nice swirly marble pattern. I'm surprise she didn't say anything about it, looked like a little kid's finger painting. I would not pay for either of those cakes. Neither were a good representation of what was requested.
That depends on the person.. I’d be upset about this whole cake in general if it were a 5 star bakery
Unless it's a Minecraft themed wedding 😂
Not true we asked for a square wedding cake and they gave us a round so the scrolls looked weird on it. Supose to match thr invitations that are square... this was 2009. As a baker I gave them 3 out of 5 since tasted amazing, colors were right just the shape was wrong so the design looked off.
My thoughts on the 2nd cake.....if I were to request that cake with the pastel color reflecting the wedding theme and I received the bright coral color, I'd be very upset.
Why are you guys so picky?!
@@purpleclaws202 because it was a supposed wedding cake it's supposed to match the colour theme people spend thousands on decorations in that colour scheme then for the cake to be a different colour ruins the theme
@@purpleclaws202 would you want to spend hundreds of dollars on a cake and have it look nothing like what you planned on
@@baileyspeer4405 the issue is that you're spending hundreds of dollars on a cake that's going to be eaten
@@purpleclaws202so? It’s a wedding cake, the aesthetic is more important in that context than the taste (even though the taste is definitely important too) - people spend hundreds of dollars on wedding cakes because it’s their wedding! And it’s important to them that things all look on theme
1. I’m not a baker at all but I am a designer and definitely notice the aesthetic difference between the buttercream plaster look vs marble and the buttercream plaster is infinitely prettier
2. I would be wayyyy more upset about the colors versus the shape if I were a bride asking for pastels and got “Barbie birthday bash” 😂😂
Entertaining none the less though lol
Sooo true!!! Hahaha
I agree I can see the difference as the marble one is just flat.
As a professional pastry and dessert chef they are both better than fondant also known as the bane of my existence
I love the “Barbie birthday bash” 😂😂
As a designer I think the first cake and the marble look was infinitely prettier
I think I'd like to see the two 5 star bakeries follow up. But same prompt, same order. Just send the reference photos and see what you get. See if you get 2 similar cakes or 2 completely different like you have here, it'd be interesting to see
Yeah making them do this same cake, that would be good.
Yes! But the budget should be the same, too.
Yes! It would be interesting to see the interpretation
And specify that the reference photo is a square cake, because I (and many others) thought it was round!
@@lunabelletheinsane i was gonna say don't specify, see if a 5 star bakery will get it right
My husband Aunt insisted on making our wedding cake. We wanted white chocolate lemon. We got a very dense, very dry (think biscuit with dry icing) vanilla cake. No lemon at all. It's been 7 years and it still bums me out
Oh wow! I would've cried!

In fairness to the 2nd bakery, I also didn’t know it was a square cake just based on the picture, it looked quite round to me🤷🏼♀ But as far as the first bakery goes, I hated it to be honest, it looked nothing like the reference, if I was expecting the picture and got that, I would send it back🙈
Yea, I also couldn't tell it was square from the picture xd
I feel like that's partially on her for not specifying.
@@artthounasty5877 are you blind or dumb? Bc it’s CLEARLY square
It literally looks like a square
I know right I thought it was round too
Oh my god really!!! It looked so square to me! I wonder if that's what happened!
Same. I thought the picture looked round and was confused why the first did a square cake.
Same😁
Ok so it wasn't just me, the picture you sent doesn't really look square from that angle.
To be fair, for the second bakery, i think they didn't know its square as you didn't specify. From the image, it looks circle from the side view. Unless they have like a 3d view of it, i doubt they would have known it's a square cake.
Hmmm, It looks like a square cake to me.
I agree the pic doesn’t look square
yeah it definitely isn’t too obviously square from the image, i probably would have mistaken it for a round cake too
I agree, at first glance it is square. I think you should specify what shape you want it.
came here to say this!! It def looks like it could be square or round from the pic.
I actually really love the first cake, if I didn’t see the reference image I wouldn’t know it’s from a one star bakery.
Me too. I love the first cake
The first cake was all vanilla even though they asked for another flavor. That kind of ruins it especially if you actually had this for your wedding. 375 bucks is still a lot.
@@Blake1720 , true, but that’s still a wildly impressive cake to my uncultured eyes ^_^
Honestly i want to see a 5⭐️ vs. 5⭐️ bakery cake to see how they look! I think it would be interesting to see what higher rating bakery would do!!
It's Hawaiian Luau topped with a Santa hat. There's NO WAY it would match any wedding theme! Definitely 1 star
If I had to choose, it would have to be the first one. The second one is more impressive with the height and flowers, but color is everything. The first one matched the color scheme perfectly, and if the wedding does have a theme, the second cake could seriously clash and look tacky.
Good point
Yeah
Absolutely. To me, it looks like a totally different cake, not the same scheme at all. Too bad cause the flowers are amazing.
The second cake is a pretty twist on the inspiration photo, but if this was meant to be my actual wedding cake, I'd be really upset that the colors didn't match the inspiration photo. Weddings have color themes.
@Christina Sloan but the color on the first tier was way off base
I'd be upset too but it would be my fault if I told a bakery to "get creative " with my wedding cake.
Completely agree!
I don't get why they would go so much off
@@martasorangeberry same
Totally agree.
I’d be devastated with the second one, if you’re getting married you have a theme and this is a totally different colour theme
I agree about the flavors. I absolutely despise vanilla cake so this would've just been a major blow
Yeah. And despite being closer to the color scheme it was so flat. I'd have been disappointed with both looks wise.
If I ordered my wedding cake, wanted a specific flavor and got a different flavor especially plain vanilla I would be FURIOUS..especially if your paying the amount of money that most bakeries charge
Omg! I can’t believe more people are not talking about this the wrong flavour thing is crazy
I agree. At the end of the day it's going to be eaten. If I'm not going to get the flavors I wanted I might as well make it myself.
If it was for taste (based on your assessment) I would choose cake 2
especially since wedding cakes are also quite expensive. not to mention special, as you have a wedding once (or so, still less than birthdays)
I completely agree.
I noticed the white band too…..I couldn’t focus on much else.
Honestly the first time you flashed the picture I didn’t look very hard at it and at first glance, with that perspective… it definitely can be mistaken for ‘round’
I would be very upset if I got a colorful wedding cake that was the wrong color.
Thank you! That wood grain? ribbon was uneven, and I thought both cakes had gaps between the layers.
Fondant work is also very bumpy. Not enough spent on smoothing and getting out all the little ridges. Wondering what the side looks like where the flowers are, because usually you would add the decor to the worst side.
you have no idea how hard it is to smooth and refine fondant lmao
I actually do, used to sell cakes. And I have had my fair share of mishaps and redo's and baking a new cake, with 5 hours to delivery, which in itself is a recipe for disaster. I just wouldn't put something forward if I wasn't happy with it. There are aspects of these cakes I would not be happy with. 🤷♀️
the first…still only was $375 and handmaking more flowers should jack the price up.
For "one star" bakeries, I think they did a really nice job on the decorations!
The fact that so many bakeries give you the wrong flavor 😭 I’m a home baker and can’t even imagine a disaster like that
I honestly think that the most important take-away from something like that is for artists of any kind to be realistic about what they can deliver.
Agreed
$375.00 for that first cake was a bargain!
Edit: It's ashame that neither cake got the flavors correct. That would definitely earn a one star review.
Damn really? Yall are harsh
@@purpleclaws202 cakes can be pretty all they want but if they taste bad its useless. in the end, food is supposed to taste to your preference (hopefully). if it isnt, you wont want to eat it
what do you mean a bargain, it's a scam 😭😭 400 bucks for a cake, any cake, is already madness to me, but a small cake like that?? it's just theft
@Delian Jay exactly!! Unless it's a hypersalistic MASSIVE cake, then maybe it's understandable
The price of the second cake was my question too.
Same question.
Same price has a big role in me picking a winner lol
also same question
They were given the same budget
Brides have a certain palette for their weddings and having a cake that clashes with the dresses, decor and table dressings is absolutely a no no.
i just looked up your work ! WOAH I AM STUNNED . You are so good at it .
Did she mention the cost of cake #2? I didn't care for either cake they both missed the mark to me as well.
They both are beautiful cakes. However, the first one is most like the other. The second looks like a birthday or party. I have never seen a cake as pretty as either of them. I live in a rural area, for weddings they usually get a grocery store flate cake. So needless to say I am totally impressed with them.
Both cakes are gorgeous. That being said, they did not follow the colour palette at all for the second cake! I would be piiiiissed lol
Yes! I agree completely.
I’m not a baker but I’ve got a good eye. I could tell too.
When you showed the inspiration cake, I didn’t realize it was square until you said it. They were both pretty, almost wish the colors of the square cake were on the round cake…only square…because that would have matched your request more.
Would love 5 star vs. 5 star!
"Oh wait! I see a piece of peach!!" (So excited!)
"It's just vanilla cake with peach..." (So disappointed)
Hahahahaha I love her faces expressions!
She posted a short of just that part and that's how I found this video/ this channel 🤣 You can literally have that part on a loop hehe
I actually like the first cake shown over the inspiration one you sent. The second one is pretty but a bit busy looking.
i like the colorful round one
and it sounds like they got the flavors right so i think it wins
The cakes are so lovely to look at. Really love the second pop of color.
I would love to see you have 1 star bakeries do goth themed wedding cakes. Although 5 star bakeries would be just as fun. There are some beautiful dark wedding cakes out there. Thank you for bringing us these wonderfully fun videos. 💕
I would love to see a 5 star bakery vs another 5 star
I would have never known that example cake was square from that photo, dang. These are so fun, I love the 1 vs 1 star, and that you're not roasting them or saying anything rude just because they're poorly rated.
i love the barbie pink cake. i know that’s not what you ordered but i love the colours, they’re so vibrant and pretty
Future children, college graduation and so, on a side)
I think more questions should have been asked by both baker and or bakeries.
She doesn’t answer any in this type of videos
Liked both. For a 1 star bakery, they did really good
This channel should named “The icing Karen” cause she is so KAREN in to it.
As a cake decorator I love these videos!! It’s so interesting to see what different people come up with for the same brief!! 💖
You two are a great couple and most hard working and thank you so much for for everyone xoxo 😘
I just found your channel and I just wanna say I really appreciate how you immediately jump to the topic once the video starts
Second bakers colors are crazy in a good way 🎉
I love you soooo much!!!! You both do so much for your fans and it means so much 💖
I didn’t even know the original cake was a square until she pointed it out
6:17 To be fair, when you look at it head-on, with no view of the top surface, it COULD be mistaken for a round cake.
Okay, trying to keep my opinions short:
Personally, based on a closer match to the prompt, a closer match to the flavors & a closer match to technique, the 2nd bakery is a CLEAR winner in my book.
your videos make people feel relaxed and entertained keep going your videos are beautiful 🥰🍓♥️
I love the look of the first cake! I'm curious what reviews these places got to make them 1 star. Was it all based on the wrong cake flavors?

The colours of the first cake are really pretty, and I like the height the second one with the extra flowers.
With the flavours, maybe you could try guessing them and then Kevin let you know what they are and see how close you get to what they are supposed to be. :)
I would never have known the picture was a square cake if you didn't say anything. I think you should send the same picture (with the same instructions you gave the 1 star bakeries) to two 5-star bakeries and see what the difference is! That would be so interesting (plus I'm curious to see if they verify the shape with you).
In fairness to the 2nd bakery, I also didn’t know it was a square cake just based on the picture, it looked quite round to me🤷🏼♀️ But as far as the first bakery goes, I hated it to be honest, it looked nothing like the reference, if I was expecting the picture and got that, I would send it back🙈
Hello Ilandri, how are you doing?
I’m a wedding planner and a ton of my clients use Publix wedding cakes. (Yes the grocery store!!!) Would love to see a review on that!!
Publix makes amazing cakes
So does Costco
The square one looks closer to the picture but for both cakes being 1 star I think they are both stunning
Would love to see more of your versions of cakes? Get 2 cakes from elsewhere and then do your own spin on one
I was thinking this too!! Would love to see her make a cake based off the reference pics as well
I am not a baker, but I did notice the buttercream texture, and the square shape.
It would be interesting to see how the taste would have matched had you done tasting before ordering.
wow, you are very generous with your reviews! lovely spirit.
In defense of bakery #2: until you pointed it out, I didn't realize the inspiration cake in the photo was square.
I don’t understand how from the softness of those colors the 2nd bakery went in this tropical sweet 16 vibe? Huh?
Just found you! You are wonderful. I love how you don't put others down just for the sake of it but are still honest. I will continue to watch you. Thank you for the fun videos. I would love to see 5 star vs 5 star.
The cake in the picture didn't look like a square all round and could have been mistaken for being round. The issue is that it's the wrong color for a color coordinated event.
I would love to see two or three home bakers competing
I know you ordered a square cake but the round is BEAUTIFUL!❤️💚💙💜💛❤️💚💙💜💛
To be fair when I saw the photo of the cake I thought it was round.
Please make @MiaMaples wedding cake you Guys both live in Canada and she really appreciates you and I would love to see you guys together ❤️
to be fair on the round cake, the angle the original picture was that of exactly 1 side was showing, and maybe they interpreted the picture differently. also, you gave them license to change things.
@@kellybarnson4074 well, I liked it.
Thank you SO much!!
@@TheIcingArtist Your welcome BBFLS ikr you deserve award 🥇 Laurie ✨💕✨
I'm so glad I'm single. I absolutely DIED hearing those prices, lol. 'This cake was just 375 dollars', like I legit thought a wedding cake would be 200 tops. LOL. If I ever get married, sorry guests! You're getting defrosted supermarket cake :p
fr!!
That sounds like a great idea!
That one start bakery cake was gorgeous. It was my style. I loved the splotchy gold on the leaves. It made them look kind of natural. I loved it. The most.
The five star cake was tacky.
Both were one star 😊
I think you're confused and didn't read the title or listen to her, there's no 5 star cake here. Its 1 star vs 1 star
