      the chocolate raspberry cake I would give five stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟 for the flavor on design I would give it one star 🌟 since it looks like a bird crashed into the cake and died on it with the feathers 🪶 or rather plants that look like feathers 🪶 put all over it lol 😆 . The lemon raspberry cake i would give four stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟 on the lemon raspberry flavor and three stars 🌟 🌟🌟 for the design as does look off balance but it's hard to see due to all the flowers 💐.

      Laurie, you’re way too generous with your rating. 😮

      The feather looking stuff on the second cake is pampas grass, it's not considered toxic, but the edges can be sharp, I would not recommend putting it on a cake

    This lady is single handedly keeping all the 1 star bakeries in her town in business. 😂

  • @katiehenry7
    @katiehenry7 2 years ago +2089

    You are giving these two businesses too much credit. Two layers of STROFOAM that is just tilted to the side and hidden with fondant...and one single flat tiny layer of cake for 800 bucks. That first cake crumbled so bad that it was literal crumbs on your plate. I've seen you be way harsher on cake that are stunning and beautiful that cost much less. I dont get it.

    • @BigOldToaster
      @BigOldToaster Year ago +146

      i do agree that she was honestly rlly forgiving, at the same time it’s easier to expect more from a someone who is known to give more and do good, whereas you don’t expect much from something like a 1 star bakery, its easy to be way less harsh and grateful due to the fact that there wasn’t much to expect anyways

    • @xenxander
      @xenxander Year ago +65

      I agree. I think she's letting her feelings get in the way of objective criticism based on the price.
      I paid so much it should be higher rated... right? That is probably the 'feelings'.
      Not for me. The higher the price the more I expect.

    • @sameppink9401
      @sameppink9401 Year ago +53

    If I order a custom cake, it better be at least 90% edible. Instant 1 star if a “cake” is mostly styrofoam

    • @brandybecause

      She wanted a three tier cake to feed 30 people.

    • @top_bunn3
      @top_bunn3 2 years ago +1026

      Exactly. $800 bucks for a cake i can get from the grocery store because they put styrofoam on it? No way

    • @katiedid1983
      @katiedid1983 2 years ago +385

      You don't get a 3 tier cake with Styrofoam UNLESS YOU ASK. Styrofoam is used to create something larger than what you need to feed people.

    • @top_bunn3
      @top_bunn3 2 years ago +638

      @katiedid1983 Still doesn't justify the price and Laurie never mentioned asking for styrofoam, she even said they wanted to use styrofoam cuz it'd be too hard otherwise

    • @JNMKlover

  • @ruthgiles8926
    @ruthgiles8926 10 months ago +419

    I have literally never ordered a custom cake in my life, so naively, I didn't even realise that styrofoam was an option. I just assumed that if you ordered a cake, it would be made of cake. All of it edible except the odd bit of decoration.
    To pay 800$ for two blocks of styrofoam with a small cake on top is insane!
    Minus 10 stars!

    • @ann.joelle
      @ann.joelle 6 months ago +2

      Okay but did you look at the size of that thing? It’s almost impossible to make this design 100% out of cake. Imagine how much it weighs and that the tiers are angeled on top of each other. A great baker can do great stuff but not defeat the laws of physics

    • @vannalaws1692
      @vannalaws1692 6 months ago +6

      @ann.joelle I think I'd probably make the larger base layer out of cake and make either the second or third (or both) out of styrofoam. That way it's not so topheavy and the customer feels like they paid for more cake than styrofoam. It's just disappointing to see such a large cake and only the tiny bit at the top is edible.

    • @miche6563
      @miche6563 2 years ago +32

      Yes its a big difference. Especially if ur charged for fondant, and that was a thick layer.
      Ultimately u dont have to eat it though, its eady to not eat fondant on a cake, usually (i would say always) theres another layer of icing under the fondant, plys icing between layers. You simply dont eat the fondant if u dont like fondant

    • @nickys5578
      @nickys5578 2 years ago +7

    Maybe next time you do an “x” star-rated bakery vs a “y” star-rated bakery you let Kevin set them up beside each other without you knowing which is which and you can rate them fairly based on quality. Then Kevin can do a big “reveal” which is which blinded.

      But the price factors in to the rating. Part of the rating is the value for money. If you paid $50 for an OK cake you're going to be much happier than if you paid $500.

    • @nobody-xh6ii
      @nobody-xh6ii 2 years ago +86

      @Sam_1984a except it's meant to feed 30 people. You cannot feed 30 people with that tiny topper without giving ant sized bites and removing layers. It's ridiculous. Even if the bride and groom have extra cake left over [which is what some people complain about in the comments apparently?] It's not the baker's decision to decide what the bride and groom do with the extra cake by saying 'it's too much for you so we will use styrofoam.' No, I want 100% cake unless only 1 tier itself is cake [mainly top if anything], not 90% of it. So $800 for that? I'd be livid tbh...

      It should be agreed on. The styrofoam is cheaper, for weddings and other big themed cake alot of people dont need such a big cake, they just want the look of a big cake. Hence styroohone is used to actually keeps costs lower. However that second cake was very pricey for the quality of decorations, and the size of what was actually cake, her issue was not that tgere was fake cake. She expected that, and both cakes had it, and she knew which layer was the real cake

    • @sushreeshashwata
      @sushreeshashwata 2 years ago +7

      @FukaiKokoroits agreed upon prior. Many wedding cakes are similar. Its not scam as is. I believe a real cake this style will need reinforcements Cake Boss style and would cost way way more.

    People put Styrofoam in custom wedding cakes?! To put it into comparison, I was married twice (just got remarried this past summer) and had custom wedding cakes for both. My first wedding in 2010, I had a 5 tier wedding cake for 250 people that had 3 different flavors and sugar orchids that was around $1200. For my second wedding this past summer, I had 9-inch round and 130 cupcakes with raspberry filling that cost me $550 for everything. That price for 2 chunks of Styrofoam is shocking. I've also participated and been in multiple wedding parties in my life and I've never seen this before.

      I think reviews on the first one are screaming “we are not getting paid enough for that”. Like that laugh at the Saturday appointment sound like “I’m not gonna sacrifice my day off for this salary”. So, unless the owner changed or they changed the politics, there’s a big chance it’s still bad even if the workers are different.

      It’s based on price and what you order.
      It’s common for bigger cakes to not be all cake. You don’t need that big of a cake ti serve 30 people, which is how many she said it would feed. But you want the statement piece at your wedding/celebration so it needs to be “big”.

    • @nobody-xh6ii

      @midniteillusion3 that tiny piece of cake isn't feeding 30 people unless you take apart the layers and give everyone ant sized bites.

    I am so confused on why the second cake used the only tier of real cake as the top tier. You would think if it was a structural issue with it being a topsy-turvy cake that the real cake which would be the heaviest part of the cake would be at the bottom. It just doesn’t make much sense to me why they would put the heaviest part on the top of a topsy-turvy cake. I think the first cake looks the best out of the two and I am flabbergasted at the quality of the second cake in relation to the price that they charged

  • @OrangeAni

      I kinda get the inedible cake part. It'd be more difficult and expensive to make it out of something edible.
      But the fake flowers I definitely agree with. It was hammered into my brain to not decorate food with something you cannot eat. Why are we using plastic flowers and not edible or sugar ones???

    • @spacehorseDW
      @spacehorseDW Year ago +5

      The fake cake part allows for a large and impressive cake for a wedding with 30 people. It would be a waste of cake if all 3 tiers were cake.

    My mom did a Topsy tervy cake for my Nieces wedding and a side sheet cake for the second flavor.
    Her brother started his toast by welcoming everyone to the "birthday party" my Niece had the cake decorated in green and blue with stripes and poka dots. My brother made the top piece with Palmer clay.
    My mom must have made 2-3 mock up cakes to practice before doing the real one. She had done many cakes before having owned a cake bakery that specialized in wedding cakes for 5 years. But she didn't have much experience with fondant. She did use marshmallow fondant though, much easier and tastyier.😮

    Here's my amateur-baker's POV. I would keep the chocolate with raspberry combination for the top cake and make classic vanilla and lemon for the bottom. Only the middle part will be faux cake because I'm not a pro. But a working bakery should be able to make the whole thing edible so no excuses there. Both of the prices were way high given the amount of cake you received. The dollar store flowers I agree with. They don't have to be super fancy, they just have to look good. And yes, because you gave an inage, they should have used a wooden board or just cover it with wood imitating contact paper. But thats just my amateur opinion.
