Totally agree. The Rose/Birds cake screams Shelby's Blush and Bashful right down to the flavoring, a favorable compliment in my book. The Butterfly Bacchanalia cake, with its simple flavors, screams of grassy, colorful hills in the country. All in all, like comparing a delicious red to a granny smith: both apples and both appealing.
not even that the birds are extremely well done and i thought they could be statues but the cake doesn't looks as neak and put together. the birds take away from the cake as well .
Your cake feels like a cake for a fun, casual dinner party among friends. The other feels like it's for a more formal event like maybe a baby shower. I like both interpretations of spring and I wish I could taste that lychee rose flavor combo.
I feel like the bakery's cake made more sense for a baby shower actually. It had blue and light pink and the roses made it a little fancier. The eggs and nest with the mom and dad bird added to the whole baby shower idea. On the other hand, your cake was very colorful and really stayed true to the whole spring idea.
100% I would choose your cake over the birds! I intensely disliked the colors on the other cake. Dull, dirty. Your cake had fresh, fun happy colors that make me feel alive. The birds were nice but I do not like to associate birds with food. Birds poop on the cake. The birds nest is not that hard to make. I would have made it with Chinese noodles, peanut butter and chocolate. Then it would taste good too.
@@olivenyes that's funny, i much prefer the muted colors of the baker's cake, to me it just feels comfortable and soft while her cake looks like it would be for a kid's birthday party (never been a fan of too many super bright colors all in one place lol)
Hmm, I love the colors on your cake for spring better, but because the competitor’s cake is all edible with that level of detail, it’s the one I’d choose if paying $170. I also prefer a cake that’s presentable from all angles, so it can be used as a centerpiece on the table. So, I do think the competitor’s cake scores higher on that element of the presentation. However, I would for sure prefer your flavors over the competitor’s cake. I love lemon cake and yours looked tastier on the inside. Fun video and you have very impressive cake decorating skills!
Yes I agree with this review. Especially the part about using the cake as a center piece so it should be presentable from all angles. I would be very disappointed if picking Laurie's cake up at a bakery and seeing those flower stems sticking up all over. It doesn't look finished or like the baker was trying to do a good job.
Can I just say how refreshing it is for a cake maker to show how anxious she is and how much self doubt goes into what she does before she gets that pop of realisation that she is, in fact, amazing! As someone who struggles with that herself, the honesty of this video was fabulous.
That, to me, is Laurie. Her emotions, anxiety and happiness are all evident immediately. She's that person that you always want around, just fun, bubbly and very emotive. I just love the way she and Kevin banter. Sooo cute.
I personally LOVED the cake with the birds!!! I loved that they used muted colors which made the birds and eggs the focal point. Everything about that cake is stunning. Your cake was pretty but I’d chose the one with the birds.
I really like both cakes, but it's hard to compare them to eachother because they both have a different style. Your cake is more like: 🌺🌻🎉🌈 and the cake of the bakery is like:🐦🤎✨🌸

I think if I was payin $170 I’d probably go for the birds cake, seems like more attention to detail, and flowers on the spring cake are very nice but the top flowers needed something on the back so they don’t look so empty
Love the birds on the bakery cake, but yours is much more “spring!” and more adaptable. The same actual cake could have different toppers and be either a girl’s birthday cake or an engagement cake if you added a bit of edible gold leaf.
I think the commissioned cake probably required a higher skill level and amount of effort, but I would probably choose Laurie’s cake for myself-it’s more festive and pretty to look at.
I prefer the bakery cake. The muted colors and the birds really make me think of spring! Whereas the bright flowers make me think more of summer wildflowers.

I agree!! I LOVED her topped, but loved the look of my icing flowers. I wonder if I can do some Photoshop magic to see what a frankin-cake would look like??
If I had to vote for a cake, I would vote for the commissioned cake. This is based off your own feedback flavor wise and my person opinion on aesthetic and technical difficulty. You felt that your lemon cake overpowered the filling, while you hadn't tasted the flavors in a cake before of the commissioned cake you seemed more pleased with the end result. As for the aesthetic and technical difficulty I was more impressed with the handmade birds and nest for the topper along with the painting. I think you both did very well with the flower designs/patterns on the side, but I think the technical difficulty of the commissioned cake was superior. If I understood correctly the commissioned cake had a budget of $175 which is the same as the cost of the flower technique you used on your cake, so I think the commissioned cake showed value above and beyond the amount of money they charged.
the one that the icing artist made kind of reminds me of a spring birthday cake and the other one kind of looks like a spring wedding cake just with the colors and the flavor but both of them are AMAZING, i could never do anything like that
*Dont say that! Anyone can do anything they set their mind on! You could definitely do it, it may just take practice. You never know, though, you **_could_** surprise yourself!*
Yes, the birds look absolutely fantastic but the icing itself looks colourless and more like an autumn themed cake with only the birds hinting it's spring. On the other hand, your cake really screams spring full of great pops of colour. btw I love lemony lemon cake. Great job. I'd choose yours any day.
Yeah but I don't think bright and colorful screams spring. And especially just flowers seems a bit too casual especially for a 170 dollar cake. Not a fan I think the winner is the bakery
For the ‘Spring cake’ theme, I would say that yours is the better design. I also think of bright colorful wildflowers over muted roses, and I would pick buttercream elements over fondant figures every day of the week.
The birds are just stunning and I like how she made everything else mute so that we know it was a cake but the birds were the focal point and it made them come alive where as a cake with frosting flowers and real flowers is overdone so often
as surprising as it may sound, it doesn't take a great skill to make birds like the ones on cake. you get molds for both fondant & chacolate, other than that, even if you are doing it with hand, it's assembling four blogs together - difference is made through painting.
I LOVE yours! It's amazing that you'd not done the technique before. But I'm going to have to go with the other baker in this competition 😊 Would have liked brighter colours on it but I love the direction she went with it and her skilled creativity. Your colour palette and flowers and her design combined would be heavenly!
My vote is that you win. The decoration is spot on for a spring feel, and I think was very pretty, especially when this is the first time you tried this style. The bakery cake, despite those lovely birds, looked a bit drab, closer to an autumn feel. And their middle two layers looked really wet and gummy, not appetizing. I love the idea of lemon, blueberry, and cream cheese, although it sounds like you need to rebalance a bit. Now you’ve got me hungry for cake!
For people making them at home, make sure your flowers are organic and meant for food consumption; not just store bought. The pesticides make them toxic to put in / on food, even if you wrap it with floral tape. ☺
*Pansies are edible. So are clover flowers, daisies, dandelions, hibiscus flowers, honeysuckles, lavender flowers, lilacs, mums, nasturtiums, roses, sunflowers, and violets. I'm sure im forgetting many others, though.*
@@Griselda_Puppy they must be organically grown for edible consumption tho. store bought flowers, unless specified as edible, are toxic even if their varietal is safe for humans to eat. 🙂
High!! Okay first off I absolutely love this video, I have gotten very excited about it and wanted to share my thoughts 😂I absolutely adore your cake, the buttercream flowers are a 10/10 chefs kiss I can not get enough of them! They seem so organic and natural, I imagine your cake being brought out at a 'the-grass-just-turned-green' picnic. It gives a very spring-y vibe and I love! I love the bird topper of their cake, very creative!! I think their cake missed the mark. Has more... wedding or baby shower vibes? Absolutely gorgeous but doesn't fit with the spring theme. I think if you combined your cake and their topper.... but maybe add a second tier in a kinda light spring green or white to give some visual calm so the birds nest directly on the flowers isn't too visually overwhelming... I think it would make the ultimate spring cake! I'd personally do the second tier a strawberry short cake, at least that is what flavour I think of with spring. If anyone has read this far I hope you're having a good day!
Loved your comment, I also think the bakery cake is giving kinda tea party vibes, still spring but more sophisticated… anyways thank u very much hope ur having a great day too 💖
Yours was stunning, however it felt a tad too childish for me, while the other baker screamed refinement. I think yours would have won by a landslide if you'd only done a diagonal of flowers like in the pictures you showed, rather than all around.
I thought that too. I didn't like how her buttercream flowers covered the entire surface of the cake. It would have looked more balanced if there were blank spots left.
I think her cake was more high end looking but at the same time I thought the theme choice was really weird. Like, the birds didn't look like they belonged with the rest of the cake at all. They stuck out really hard
Well actually I feel like the professionals cake with the bird was necessary because spring is when things bloom up! And give birth. But that’s my opinion!
I agree with you on this. I thought, wow...wedding or even a very fancy shindig (haha Southern US girl here...) cake for something other than just a spring cake.
FYI, when doing a one sided "flower arrangement" I was taught that the back ought to be as "finished" as the front. Nonetheless, YOUR cake beats the other cake hands down!! I thought the birds were too bulky when they could have been done much sleeker. And yes, those roses were too bland. I absolutely loved, loved, LOVED you spatula work!!! I really appreciated how you mixed, blended, and applied the colors!!!
I think you blew it out of the park! I agree with some other comments that the bakery cake looks more wedding/baby shower than just "spring" I vote for you!
i like how you can honestly review ur cake, like how the blueberry/cheesecake didnt come thru enough, instead of just being biased bc u made it urself :)
@@wolfgal451 I don’t like rose either. I don’t like the scent or flavor. I suppose it’s an acquired taste. That’s sounds like a delicious wedding cake!!
For a “spring cake” theme, your cake is the better cake by far! It screamed SPRING to me. The other one was also beautiful but it didn’t portray the spring theme, unfortunately. Anyway, GREAT JOB!!!
I second this comment. And my thoughts exactly. Your cake is a perfect example of a spring theme. And I personally think it is just as impressive as the bakery cake.
Both cakes are so beautiful!! Yours is definitely a SPRING cake though. Those colors and flowers are fantastic. Huge props to the other baker. Theirs is gorgeous and you can see how creative they are (design + flavor).
I vote for you! There colors were to muted for spring, you need vibrant and pretty outstanding colors to represent spring, and your design was AMAZING. And it wasn't really sloppy, that was the style and i felt like that went along way better with spring because spring is pretty and like flowers all or not perfectly standing or strait up, real flower petals are perfectly strait! Thank you so much!
Ok... well the one from the bakery might look slightly more “professional” but I think yours is way more springy! And the flavours of yours sounds amazing!!!!
Not sure if I’m the only one but I like your cake so much more. Well both are amazing but yours has a sense of freshness and playfulness that comes with spring. The colours pop and it’s a beautiful palette. Yayy :)
Your cake feels more like "Spring" to me and is definitely my favorite. That said, the other cake would be absolutely perfect for a sophisticated baby shower and it is truly lovely as well.
I love both cakes! The other cake is much more intricate looking though and I feel like a slightly better value for the money and I loved the muted colors and roses for a wedding in particular. Your cake was more spring bridal shower to me, but absolutely stunning and looked like it tasted much better. Over all both bakers are so talented!
I like the bird figurines but I prefer your cake! It seems more modern and I love the bright colors. The only thing I would suggest is leveling your cakes about twice each. That way you could use more of the amazing sounding filling and the lemon wouldn´t be as overpowering anymore. I also prefer the mouthfeel of cake with equal parts of cake and filling
Yours was by far the best interpretation of the theme, best colors, best type of flowers. The birds and nest were cute, but the cake was dreary color wise, and the cake looked dense and undercooked in spots. You win in my book! 👍
Your hand painted buttercream flower cake is absolutely gorgeous and I'm in love! It's way better than the bakery cake hands down! I never make cakes but this gave me the inspiration to want to try it! 🖤
Your cake screams spring to me. The other cake looked almost like a muffin texture. For a "spring cake" competition you totally got it! Congratulations!!! 🌸
I’m in awe of the birds on top of the bakery cake! I love how sophisticated it looks! But the inside does not make me eat it: it looks weird. So for decoration I vote bakery, but since we want to eat the cake I would pick yours! So final vote: yours!
Omg both cakes are stunning! If I HAVE to pick one, I’d choose the birds with those beautiful muted roses, but I am so in love with lemon so I’m sure I’d love that more
I would love to see this challenge again, but make it blind! Two other cakes presented against yours without revealing which one's which. Then show/explain your process.
I always give honest reviews and I completely agree that the 'pro' had too many flavors going on; strong flavors too. I definitely liked your cake better. I loved the painted flowers. But I'm not one for putting non edible stuff on a cake.
The bird cake is amazing! It totally reminds me of Spring; birds 🐦 yell spring, roses are spring, pastels are spring colors-- it was like being transported to my grandmother's garden during the spring bloom. I miss my nana❤. 😍 Plus those flavors!
I definitely think this one goes to Laurie. Those bright colors, the beautiful buttercream flowers, and it looked absolutely delicious on the inside too! The other cake was lovely but it looked so dense on the inside.
The birds were the most amazing part of the store bought cake. Without them that cake is just ok. You’re cake was colorful and fun. Just like spring. If I ordered a spring themed cake, your would be what I would be looking for. Sometimes a baker can be trying to hard to be super fancy. I feel Like the cake from the bakery was trying to hard.
Two totally different aesthetics for the same Spring themed cakes! Wow, they are both worth the money. I agree that bringing the teal from the birds down into the cake will tie it together a little more, but the birds and nest are amazing. Personally, I prefer the vibrant floral style of your cake. But I agree, though, that cream cheese frosting should not be over powered by other flavors. It's definitely my favorite frosting!
I loved your version of the cake more than the bird one. And you made the buttercream knife painting so good to be a first timer! Final product didnt look like you didn't do that ever before! Bravo!
Based on the flavors and esthetics of the cakes I'd definitely chose Laurie's cake as lemon cake is my favorite and her cake has so much more color and puts me more in mind of spring. The commissioned cake is very well done, especially the topper but it doesn't give me spring colorful vibes and I don't think I'd like the flavor combination they chose. 🙂
Their cake makes me think of mothers day, its pretty! Your cake is spring in a cake, I love it and I know it would taste amazing because I love lemon. Good job!
The cake with the birds was gorgeous! The colors were beautiful & sophisticated. They really thought out of the box with the cake & flavors! The other cake was a very pretty spring flower cake. Depends on what the client orders & expects, cake wars!
So, Our artists cake is just screaming : GRANDMA’S BACKYARD GARDEN! IT’S SPRING BABY And the other one screams: I’m sophisticated and absolutely adore spring And I’m at a loss
EXCELLENT CAKE!!!! Your cake screamed SPRING!!!! The colors and the floral design you chose to do remind me of the flowers I'd see around my grams and nanas places.
personally I think your cake has more of a spring style while the other has a soft wedding aesthetic. the light pink shade of the flowers reminds me of the bridesmaids dresses and the flowers they hold. I'd probably buy yours.
I’m biased I like cute things so I really like the bird cake and when you said lychee I was intrigued cause also another one of my favorite flavors but yours was so pretty and reminds me of painting but I’d have to vote for the commissioned one I just really like the birds and the birds nest
+1 for you, no argument, your cake screams spring. I agree that the colors on the birds should have been tied in with the other cake, they are cute but a bit too cartoonish, but great work still, it also looked dry. I would have loved to try the lemon. Mouth watering just watching. Looks sooo good.
Hey girl, your amazing and beautiful and such a talented person. I wait every Friday for a new video. And when the video comes it never disappoints! I just want you to know you are so talented and pretty! I wish I could bake just as good as you but you know... hehe 🙃
I find it hard to determine which one I like most. The one from the bakery is lovely (especially the beautifull birds!), on the other hand I love the one from the Icing Artist, because it just screams spring and i adore the choice of color. I like them both in their own way!
I love the other cake, and I think it's more interesting from all angles. Your technique on the painted flowers is really beautiful and I think you did an amazing job, especially after not having attempted it before. My personal preference is for the other cake because of the colors and theme they used
If I were paying for one of those cakes, I’d choose yours. The other one was impressive, but I’m loving the look of those buttercream “painted” flowers on yours
If the theme is spring, I think yours definitely hit the nail on the head. I think the real flowers on top were what made it really stand out though. When you mentioned deeper colors I immediately thought of blue bonnets since they pop up like crazy here in Texas. That being said though, the one from the bakery is entirely edible which can’t be said for your flowers. The bakery cake was definitely more sophisticated in terms of flavor combination (not that it sounds more appealing though). Their design wasn’t my favorite though. It gave me wedding vibes minus the birds which gave me Disney vibes. Idk why. The potential is there. Just not the execution. I’d say for physical looks yours would definitely win.
I love your cake! It's so pretty. I would've chosen like...a super light pastel aqua instead of a white background or something like that for a pop of color. And the birds of the competitor were amazing, but without it...it looks a bit simple and out of life. Also, I don't like cake because of how dense it can be, and that one looked like it. But they both did an incredible job!!
I only recently discovered and subscribed to your channel. I’m binge watching and really enjoying the chemistry you and Kevin have. You make learning about caking super fun.
yours looks delicious, the other one looked really overcooked to me, some layers more so than others, and the cake crumb was a disaster of dense mess..yours won hands down from here!
The flowers that you "painted" on are outstanding! Beautiful art work. Definitely a 5 star cake. I would use same colored smaller fresh flowers. I'd have to think about it a little more as far as where to put flowers on top. Truly, the art work is gorgeous.
I personally think yours looks more spring time vibes bc when I think of spring I think of colorful flowers not dull dusty colors like the other person did I am going crazy over yours & would wanna try it more than the other bc the flavors & colors pop out more grabbing my attention as well as your stunning details hands down you win in my book

Both cakes are beautiful. Personally, I’m more impressed with the skill it takes to make the birds.
as surprising as it may sound, it doesn't take a great skill to make birds like the ones on cake. you get molds for both fondant & chacolate, other than that, even if you are doing it with hand, it's assembling four blogs together - difference is made through painting.
I think your cake is more on the theme of spring. The other cake DEFINITELY had a lot of skill but doesn’t look like spring
Well actually I feel like the professionals cake was still spring theme because spring is when things bloom up! But that’s my opinion
For people making them at home, make sure your flowers are organic and meant for food consumption; not just store bought. The pesticides make them toxic to put in / on food, even if you wrap it with floral tape. ☺
Oh wow. Thank you for this. I’m too lazy to ever try this level of cake decoration, but this is interesting to know.
Won
I thought that too. I didn't like how her buttercream flowers covered the entire surface of the cake. It would have looked more balanced if there were blank spots left.
@@FeliciaOgilby Sorry, English isn't my first language. I'll fix it now :)
ok yeah I agree more than some other comments that are completely on her side
@@sofiasofia-em No Worries. I Hope It Helps With Your English. 😘
It reminded me of a baby shower theme
FYI, when doing a one sided "flower arrangement" I was taught that the back ought to be as "finished" as the front. Nonetheless, YOUR cake beats the other cake hands down!! I thought the birds were too bulky when they could have been done much sleeker. And yes, those roses were too bland. I absolutely loved, loved, LOVED you spatula work!!! I really appreciated how you mixed, blended, and applied the colors!!!
Girl after my own heart... “I’ve never done this before but I’m going to do it for this competition.” You go girl!
I’m just over here wondering why no ones talking about those middle 2 layers in the bakery cake looking all gummy and underbaked 😂
I thought the same thing. It doesn't looked baked through.
I thought it might be (over?) saturated with a simple syrup
Yes they looked under baked to me too which for a professional cake shouldn’t happen
maybe it’s one of the fillings? idk man
O was about to said that right now
I think you blew it out of the park! I agree with some other comments that the bakery cake looks more wedding/baby shower than just "spring" I vote for you!
i like how you can honestly review ur cake, like how the blueberry/cheesecake didnt come thru enough, instead of just being biased bc u made it urself :)
I would much rather have the colorful, more “textured” cake with lemon and blueberry flavors for sure!
I love lemon blueberry it's literally the flavors of my wedding cake. And I really do not like rose .
@@wolfgal451 I don’t like rose either. I don’t like the scent or flavor. I suppose it’s an acquired taste. That’s sounds like a delicious wedding cake!!
The birds. The flavors sound delightful. I love both lychee and rose.
Exactly. The other cake screams wedding.
Follow a Bob Ross painting tutorial but on a cake. (Square cake/sheet cake) 🖼
you cam watch this until then :)

she does an amazing job!
Not sure if I’m the only one but I like your cake so much more. Well both are amazing but yours has a sense of freshness and playfulness that comes with spring. The colours pop and it’s a beautiful palette. Yayy :)
Im actually with you on that!
The birds one is great but the flower one just pops😍 and I love that!
Kevin’s life seems awesome he just has to film and eat cake lol.
Edit: OMG HOW DID THIS GET SO MANY LIKES!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
dont forget taking care of Archieeee lmfao
I was thinking the same thing! 😂😂 Wonder if they'd adopt me. 🤔 😂
@@Foxyari91 maybe they will but I am on the waiting list longer lol
He does have to drive some scary cakes around too though
Yours was by far the best interpretation of the theme, best colors, best type of flowers. The birds and nest were cute, but the cake was dreary color wise, and the cake looked dense and undercooked in spots. You win in my book! 👍
Yeah, I saw those spots that looked raw in the other cake.
Those flowers you did are ON POINT!! The colors are beautiful for the vibe you were going for. Maybe you could of added a sky and sun.
Omg both cakes are stunning! If I HAVE to pick one, I’d choose the birds with those beautiful muted roses, but I am so in love with lemon so I’m sure I’d love that more
i loved both of the cakes but i thin that yours screamed spring more!!
Your cake is so beautiful. I love the rustic “imperfect” edge
I would love to see this challenge again, but make it blind! Two other cakes presented against yours without revealing which one's which. Then show/explain your process.
Great idea!
Yes!
Yes!!! Reveal the decorating process after we get to see the two
her vibe is so relaxing, she is the type of person you get comfortable with very easily
loved this video and subscribed
I always give honest reviews and I completely agree that the 'pro' had too many flavors going on; strong flavors too. I definitely liked your cake better. I loved the painted flowers. But I'm not one for putting non edible stuff on a cake.
Okay, but they're such a cute supportive couple. Makes me so happy.
#goals right?!
The bird cake is amazing! It totally reminds me of Spring; birds 🐦 yell spring, roses are spring, pastels are spring colors-- it was like being transported to my grandmother's garden during the spring bloom. I miss my nana❤.
😍 Plus those flavors!
Their cake gives me Spring starting as the snow melts and birds bringing new life. Your cake gives me the heart and freshness of Spring!
I feel
Like the cake from the bakery was trying to hard.
Both are stunning I’d be blown away with either cake had I placed a spring order
I love her cake, don’t get me wrong but i think the store one’s better, the birds and flowers are absolutely stunning!!
My five-year-old, who is a huge fan, voted the bakery cake. I prefer yours.
Your cake is amazing! And so much more reminiscent of spring! I do have to say those birds are beautiful.
I’m sorry, I love those biiiirds. And the nest is so creative.
IT’S SPRING BABY
And the other one screams: I’m sophisticated and absolutely adore spring
And I’m at a loss
I really love your spring cake because the colours are bright and the flowers remind me of spring. Great job! 🌸
EXCELLENT CAKE!!!! Your cake screamed SPRING!!!! The colors and the floral design you chose to do remind me of the flowers I'd see around my grams and nanas places.
I really liked your cake as it gives more of 'spring vibes' then the other cake. The birds and the nest looks cute but your cake nailed it😍
personally I think your cake has more of a spring style while the other has a soft wedding aesthetic. the light pink shade of the flowers reminds me of the bridesmaids dresses and the flowers they hold.
I'd probably buy yours.
Omg the bakery cake is INCREDIBLE I liked both of them buy that one is so pretty love it
I’m biased I like cute things so I really like the bird cake and when you said lychee I was intrigued cause also another one of my favorite flavors but yours was so pretty and reminds me of painting but I’d have to vote for the commissioned one I just really like the birds and the birds nest
That’s the most beautiful cake you’ve ever decorated! Amazing talent. You definitely won this challenge!
I think they are both gorgeous cakes, but when I think of spring, HER cake would definitely be what I'd picture. It's beautiful
You knocked it out of the park! It screams spring! Their's, without the birds, is just a wedding cake.
+1 for you, no argument, your cake screams spring. I agree that the colors on the birds should have been tied in with the other cake, they are cute but a bit too cartoonish, but great work still, it also looked dry. I would have loved to try the lemon. Mouth watering just watching. Looks sooo good.
I love how you are always so positive! I also like yours more. It screams more spring!
I'm a cake decorator of 10 years and I hands down like your's better. You did great also for your first time painting with icing. Stunning!
I’d say for physical looks yours would definitely win.
going by theme, yours definitely wins and screams spring but aside from theme adherence, the bakery cake would win tbh
Never watch these videos on an empty stomach.
Just made that mistake so now I’m trying to figure out what I should bake xD
