This report makes one mistake. This house was not purchased by Big Edie & Little Edie in 1924. It was purchased by Big Edie & her husband, Phelan, in 1924. At that time, they were still married, & Little Edie was only about 7 years old. Phelan & Big Edie divorced in 1946. Soon after, the house & property began to slide into disrepair.
One mistake?? Many. They should really have investigated before reporting. Jackie is a subplot. The mother and daughter did not buy the house. Big Edie and her husband did. Sally Quinn is a witch and responsible for putting a hex on 3 people, whom she doesn’t name. She only stopped hexing people when her brother advised her to after her son was born with brain problems. People asked her to put a hex on trump, but she refused. Quinn/Bradley story could be told as a sequel to the Edie Beatles’ story.
Those beds are original to that bedroom (it was the bedroom the two younger brothers lived in). The twin beds seen in the documentary were in another bedroom.
They did a beautiful job of renovation.. The Beales were interesting, because they came out of a bygone era , with lavish parties and jetsetting. In their later years m they were very eccentric and couldn't support themselves . They were used to being waited on, and had servants doing all the daily tasks , that we regular people do everyday ourselves. Little Edie looked alot like cousin Jackie.
220,000 dollars back in 1970 something was a lot of money. To put it in perspective the home I'm in in 1970 when built new cost 10k. It's now worth 41 times that.
Yes, and I personally have always preferred a mature garden, because it looks more natural and less manicured, precisely. Gardens that are too manicured just look like restricting nature to me, they look more like living-rooms than gardens, and that’s so démodé as well. If one really wants the feeling of being in nature a more mature garden will always achieve that way better than a new, freshly manicured one.

If it had the original beach frontage, the house would definitely be worth that. even without its history. But that portion of the property was sold during the Depression, and the proceeds probably kept the family afloat during that period. Whether or not people are willing to pay for the history/fame/status, remains to be seen.

Definitely, it would be Big Edie whose spirit would be there. Little Edie, if not haunting a stage in Manhattan (or maybe one of the spectacular penthouse terraces of the newly-revamped and repurposed Barbizon), would be on the beach. The house really IS an icon, now. I know they'd be pleased to see that their old books are back on the shelves, and so many of the Beales' remaining possessions are still there (the things they didn't have to sell, and the ones that the 'helpers' didn't steal). I hope the next owner continues in the curatorial tradition.

The gardens are not overgrown, they are mature. Many of the premier botanical gardens in the world look very similar.
