At Home with Liz Lange at Grey Gardens

- In 1975, the late Maysles Brothers' documentary put Grey Gardens on the map. The iconic East Hampton estate was the home of Big and Little Edie Beale, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who lived in the house in a state of shocking squalor. Bought and renovated by late Ben Bradlee and wife Sally Quinn, the house has now been restored to its former glory. Last summer, fashion designer Liz Lange rented the house and we were privileged to visit. Join us for an insider video tour of this iconic home. To see more, visit Quintessenceblog.com
When you truely have an appreciation of history & architecture you'd love this house. Its fantastic and really great Liz has it. Sincerely hope her children & future generations would appreciate it.
I can almost hear Big Edie calling for Little Edie. ❤️
Thank GOD Little Edie demanded the house not be torn down, she had the fore-sight to know it's magnificent history and to know tearing it down would have been a disaster! and thanks for posting this video, what a treat to see the house in all its glory!
SO true!! And thank you - so glad you enjoyed!
Quintessence I love this stunning house an beach an garden. stunning. she dome house up to perfection I love that style.
Quinn and Bradlee undertook the extraordinary restoration. They understood and honored the home's spirit. Since Bradlee's death, Quinn has rented the property. It is currently on the market (July 2017) for a little under $20 mil. Though Liz Lange is not the owner (she rents) she is so spot-on about the disgusting McMansions that come with heli-pads and bowling alleys. The vulgarians who have no appreciation or understanding of the Hampton heritage.
So true - and Liz was the perfect renter with such an appreciation for both the Beale's legacy and the house!
Agreed! She fully embraced the house and its gardens. If anyone deserves to own it, she does. (Hey Liz... it could be yours for $18 mil)
The citiots have ruined the hamptons. Grateful to have enjoyed the best of it in the 70 s
Very well said...I'm from Chicago an believe strongly in preservation of our country, We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world...I know only the wealthy live there but they have taken good care of the land.🌲🌾🍁🍂🌻🗽
Well said - I am from the UK my great Aunt is mixed Irish/American heritage and used to have friends who she would regularly visit in the Hamptons. As children she used to tell us wonderful stories about life in that area that fascinated me and she told me about Grey Gardens - which i watched and loved, I always had a plan to visit myself. However my Aunt said exactly the same thing that so many houses and buildings have been put up and has changed the entire character of the area - she last visited 15 years ago and said she wouldn’t return as it’s no longer the place she remembers as being so wonderful. So perhaps I will just keep my memories of her stories and the pictures she left us (she passed a few years back) and not visit. I have been to New York city a number of times and it would be easy to have visited but I haven’t yet. We have a similar problem in the UK where new people build absolute monstrosities with no respect to the local area or it’s history. it’s hard to believe people move to a fascinating historical area and have no interest in it - also thanks for introducing me to the word ‘citidiots’ it’s perfect for some of the people who move to small English villages only to build ugly city dwellings 👍
Sometimes I wish these episodes would be longer. Being from the area, I know some of the people who were involved with the Beales and their story. A lot to it. The current owner keeps the house and property lovely.
You have done a fabulous job in restoring the Grey Gardens. I remember the house years ago when I lived near by. It was a complete wreck with animals, fleas living in it. I wanted to buy it but instead bought another “Please save me home” on the Coast of Maine. You are brave and saved a great home❤️
It was actually Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee who renovated and owned the house when we filmed. Liz, who was renting for the summer, has since bought the house. We hope to get back and see what she's done!
I'm going to buy this house. It has everything I always wanted in a home. Love the sweet history set in stylish, yet humble country home decorated with period furniture. The wrap-around porch, hammock, beautiful and delightfully surprising garden, plenty of room for guests, the pool, the pergola, the thatched hut I would use for my garden potting and planting come spring.
I love how all the nooks and crannies of the garden are so mysterious and intriguing. I especially love the wooden floors, built-in cabinets, cupboards, window seating, bookcases, glass doors, wood stove, fireplaces, grand entrance, sun room. It just overwhelms me because it fits my dream home so perfectly! I even have a fabulous mahogany four and a half-foot Baby Grand Aeolian piano from the 1930's that could be placed in just the "right spot". Plus, I would take it with all the furniture that's there! To me, it's move-in ready. There is so much character in older homes. Many homes like this...you can tell its history was filled with love, and more good memories than bad. Only two things I would change. The tennis court would become an extension of the garden with lovely precious tea rose flower beds, with a shaded place to sit or linger under a couple of fruit trees, preferably an apple and pear tree. Along the road in the front, I would add a matching wood fence to encourage newly-planted climbing roses to clamber over and along it to frame the gorgeous home in even more abundant glamor and charm. Grey Gardens is going to be mine...someday soon.
sylvie girl I'm going to buy this house as well. It reminds me a bit like a huge doll house. What a wonderful place to live. I love the grounds around it. I think I would sit there for hours with the scent of the flowers, trees and grass and ocean. You just do not see houses like this anymore with all of its charm. It may not ne everyones taste, but it sure is mine. The price tag is a bit hefty so I best win a lottery or something.
If you do please invite me ,! I will be the perfect guest 😎
Hope ya got lots of money…
I’m absolutely delighted to know Grey Gardens lives on and is so beautifully cared for. ❤
what a great lady for keeping the house original and so fitting to memorize little edith...its a shrine to her.....really great lady to do that! Edie is looking down and just lovin it I'm sure
If someone can find the old article, there was a issue of ( I think it was ) Town and Country, maybe 10yrs , 15yrs ago ?.., which discussed the first days of the new owners going into Grey Gardens to see how they were going to go about restoring the house to it's original state. When suddenly either the new owner or one of the design, archetict team was startled to see a apparition of Big Edie, standing in the middle of the living room area, down stairs. The person who the apparition appeared in front of , said , Edie don't worry, we will respect your beautiful home. With that, Big Edie supposedly vanished. See if someone can find it, I had the old magazine but no longer have it. I remember being shocked by the paragraph in the article, but I remember reading it quite clearly. I had chills but was also happy to know Edie was watching her home.
Fabulous!!! Love that the quirkiness was honored instead of abolished! We need more design like this that celebrates the history and personality of a place. What a jewel and glad to see it is so lovingly being tended to!
Thank you Becky and exactly what we loved. I totally agree - this property is oozing with personality!
The current owner is pretty cool. I love everything she did with the property. You can tell she really cares and understands the history. So rare these days. Sometimes these remods can make you cringe, but she's respectful while also adding her own personal touches. Class act all the way.
Hi Tobias... The video is a little misleading... It gives the impression that Liz Lange owns the place. Actually, she rented it from Sally Quinn, wife of the late Ben Bradlee. It was Quinn and Bradlee who restored Grey Gardens in the spirit of its glory days. (Currently on the market for $18 mil.)
Wish it were longer!
I am very familiar with the history of Gray Gardens. I am so pleased to know that Liz now owns the property. I’d love a longer visit through this fabulous house and beautiful gardens. I love that Liz appreciates the way the Hamptons used to be, and this home and property definitely exemplify this. I could watch this over and over. I would like more please 🙂💕
Liz is renting it. Quinn still owns it.
LIZ is a Treasure living in a treasure. Passionate about keeping the history alive, lush & thriving. True classic video. Thank you for visiting & sharing America's wonder.
Our pleasure and it's true!! Love that - a treasure living in a treasure!
Looove this house and the respect with which the gardens have been curated........... Thank you for a lovely 'moment' ! Hx (UK)
Our pleasure!!
MAGNIFICENT and I’m so glad that big Edie and little Edie’s legacy lives on they died wanting that .
When I'm feeling little depressed I watch this. Over over. From what it was to now. Incredible.. I also like watching sherly mcain home in Mexico
If I could have any house in America it would be this one. For the fascinating history of the two Edies and its charming character and beautiful gardens. It looks wonderful and so homey. Thank you for sensitively restoring Grey Gardens to its former glory and for preserving a part of East Hampton’s social history. Wish I could see it personally ❤
Fabulous! Thank you, while I've enjoyed all the homes you've covered, this is one of thee best.
Thank you +sherrie gibson - so glad!!
the home is so beautiful now. thank you for restoring it.
When this episode was made, Liz was renting. The then owners, Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee (of The Washington Post) had done the restoration. Liz has since bought the property and we hope to get back sometime to review her updates!
@@quintessenceblg Would love to see a video of her extensive renovations! I have seen and read about some of them online and the original details she restored on the exterior look incredible! Would love to see how she has changed the interior and gardens.
I love this channel...what a treat to visit Grey Gardens...keep up the good work!
Thank you so much +Pallatium !!
I so wish I could see this house and the amazing gardens. So glad that Liz Lange bought this house. It is obvious that she appreciates the rich history.
Me too and hope to get back there sometime to film again after she has put her stamp on it!
Great house! Wouldn't change a thing, thank you for leaving the history in place.
Couldn't you just post longer videos? like at least 10 minutes to let us see more of the house? Not a single video on this channel is long enough to satisfy my eyes!
We're thrilled that you would like longer videos but many people don't have your enviable attention span!! Thank you!
Quintessence Gosh, I respectfully disagree. Try it, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the response❤
Don't underestimate the public. We do not all have the attention span of a gnat.
The host is so nice, and the reporter is polite.
Wonderful! Why tear out amazing living history? I can never understand why anyone would do that..thanks for sharing
Every time I watch one of these I always wish the video tours were longer. We need at least 30 minutes with these houses.
I love this! Thank you for the tour!! I would die to see it in person!
Love the house! it just looks so real and inviting!!!
Exactly +Ignacio Martinez Argüllo !! The way every summer house should be!
Oh, what a treat! Wish we could of seen more 😍
Maybe some one will do a "Gray Gardens now" special
Susanna, HGTV needs to give you a tv show, everything you share with is beautiful .

jayne lehmer oh I like that idea seeing it at it best to what happened
Thanks Jayne - there is never enough to do it all!! Susanna is so great as our host! - Stacey
I have loved this amazing house and it's history ever since I came across the documentary and movie years ago! I wondered what became of it. It is so lovely now and the gardens look beautiful, too! 😊 What a dream it would be to live there and be able to walk to the beach! Thank you for posting this. Would love to see more! 😊
Ms. Lange is a hoot! It's nice the house has a resident with a personality as colorful as its history.
Odonata Liz doesn’t own but had always loved the house and rented it for the entire summer.
Why are these wonderful videos so brief?
Taking that as the highest compliment - thank you!!
What a treat to see Grey Gardens restored and well maintained. Love your videos. Seeing and learning things from the experts and designers in their own rights.

I love that they have preserved it and she appreciates it. I hope they pass it on to someone else who appreciates it.
Love the gardens and trees! I' d save the tree too, and move the driveway if necessary.
Fabulous!!!! Wish I could've been there in person... Vid is the next best thing !

What a beautiful gem!
Di Di It is! I hope the new owners are doing it justice!
Such a great interview and how lucky she is to have found this historic home to rent! So much history and love that it carries! I interviewed with Liz years ago, such a class act! 😘
Elle J Agree on all points!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
OMG !,, Grey Gardens 💕I have seen the documentary and own the movie ! How amazing Thank You so Much! Take another visit and let me explore the virtual tour of the whole home please 😁❤️
LIKE!! Wonderful to see the house still standing, and in such beautiful shape that all these years later, people can enjoy it. The story of the Beales is a sad one, but something of those ladies lives on in their home. While I don't believe in ghosts, I do think some essence of a person remains in a place they inhabited for many years. I always felt something comforting about the 1927 bungalow we rented when we were first married, even though my husband worked nights and I was there alone. What a treat for you, Susanna and Stacy, to see this amazing place, and how kind of you to share it with us. :)
It really was a treat - thank you!! And since we filmed, Liz has purchased the house so we hope to return for a follow up episode. - Stacey
@@quintessenceblg Oh, that is great news! I definitely would love to see more of the house and gardens.

Fascinating documentary "Gray Gardens".
Thank you for this update.
Our pleasure - thrilled we were able to share!
They brought it to its original Glory💖
Last I heard it was up for sale for 20 million, 'The only way you'll get me out of this house is feet first' she got her wish, bless her
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank God I found this channel.
That grand old tree with its trunk sprawled across the driveway and propped up just killed me.
MT Yankin Isn’t that great?! I loved it too!!
we want you on tv seriously!tv needs to be good again
Oh thank you Appadriana - Susanna and I would love to share with everyone via the big screen!
Thanks for the beautiful tour!
my very favorite house of all i have reviewed. the gardens and thatched roof is beyond wonderful.
So glad you enjoyed!!
Thank you indeed Liz! Amazing that so much was left and preserved by Liz in the way of books and things. And ironic that her last name is Lange as well - any relation to Jessica that played Big Edith? LOL Big question for me is was the pool always there? Little Edie certainly liked swimming in the ocean. But it's a wonder she didn't point the pool out in the doc being a shame she couldn't use it as well. Nice little segment and respect for Liz and her respect for keeping history alive there!
Liz didn't renovate or own the house but rented it for the summer. But she was always an ardent Grey Gardens fan and very knowledgeable about its history. She is no relation to Jessica Lange. Not sure about the pool.... But thank you for your comments - stop back soon!
Barbara - thank you for all your very knowledgeable comments. I am sure all our avid viewers appreciate your additional information!
The pool wasn't there when they lived there. They added it and a tennis court after the renovation.❤
It’s magical!
👍🏻👍🏻
Sad to hear it’s for sale because the house is perfect just as it is. Thanks
I love those gardens.
Would love to visit more of the interior.
I would love a tour of the town and streets, anything really! 😊
So did Liz buy this house from Ben and Sally Bradlee? or is she just Renting it?? either way I am SO grateful they restored it to it's former glory!! BEAUTIFUL HOUSE!!
She just rented - but only person to have rented for the entire season. And yes, beautiful renovation so respectful of its past!
She owns it now.
@@rebellefleur435that's wonderful news. I'm so glad somebody got it who appreciates it and will only add to its history.
Beautiful.
Beautiful!
Wonderful house, spaces I love the trees
It’s very sad when you see what the new owners have done to this beautyful home, on Homeworthy.
Fianny, a sense of its dimensions!
Edie would be so happy.
Fantastic
AH the Hamptons! Where else on earth can this be home?
Imagine doing a seance in this house wow!!!!!!!!!
Did they find little Eddie’s blue scarf?! JK😉
Hahahahahaa!! Yes Daaling, under the weeds.
Was the pool there when the Beales lived there, or was it added later?
Nice backyard
I wish I could buy it!

LOVE IT!!!
Meravigliosa casa e meraviglioso giardino!!
The whole story of Grey Gardens, which now includes documentaries & a movie, made my heart skip a beat when I saw that Quintessence had a video. I agree with others that we want & need to see MORE. MORE is better in this example.
We will go back when we can! Liz has since purchased the house so would be a great follow up!
