Which Speedbooster do you BUY for Video? Metabones Vs. Viltrox Vs. Generic ML

  • Just thought I'd test these three speedboosters I have lying around for Video to compare the differences and see if each are worth their price.
    Which do you like more? Are the differences negligible? I'd be happy with any of them...
    My SB Thoughts:
    - Metabones Speedbooster: Good AF/IS Support, Clean, Sharp WO and Stopped Down, Warm Tint, Nicely shaped bokeh.
    - Viltrox Speedbooster: Good AF/IS Support, little rough corners, Good WO and Stopped Down, Neutral Color, Bokeh is pretty good
    - Generic Speedbooster: No AF/Electronic Connection, Swirly on the corners, 3D Pop Effect, Soft Wide Open, Sharp Stopped Down, Bokeh quite rough (but quite helios swirly-like), good if you have a large Vintage Lens Collection.

    I'm confused and shocked that the Metabones lost the nice swirley bokeh that the generic maintained in the last comparison. That alone would rule out the Metabones for vintage lenses.

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 2 года назад +7

    I expected the generic to do better. It was easy to tell which was the generic in every test. However, it was hard to tell the Viltrox and Metabones apart. I would have liked to see tests of chromatic aberrations in high contrast areas like tree branches against a bright sky to see if the Tantalum glass in then Metabones provides better aberration control than the cheaper glass in the Viltrox.

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад

      The speedbooster is for full frame glass only. People modify EF-s Apsc lenses to fit them. I've used the Sia 18-35mm on the EOS M with a speedbooster and it fit, just had vignette, so I'm pretty sure it will work fine on the GH5. I used to have that camera and the Sigma 30mm F1.4 on a speedbooster worked.

    Thanks for making this awesome video! New to all of this and I have recently acquired a GH5. I just ordered the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon with the Metabones Canon EF to Micro 4/3 T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x. On some other video I saw that if it wasn't 'ULTRA' there would be vignetting.
    Honestly I think the Viltrox is fantastic and the price is unbelieveable. I'm still waitng for the Metabones coz it's on 'backorder'. So I can return it coz it hasn't got here yet lol
    But I worry about the vignetting. Not sure which Viltrox would NOT have the vignetting for my setup GH5 and Sigma 18-35

    The comparison at 6:54 is very clear. Metabones has the best color retention, contrast, clarity, and no chromatic aberration to be seen. Go full screen you will see Viltrox has severe chromatic aberration at the corners, and white is turned bluish. Metabones is best overall but also by far the most expensive.

    • @3sgtepwnzr
      @3sgtepwnzr Год назад +1

      @@QuicknStraight I agree but today, it’s $479 on BHphotos. The price to quality extrapolation is not useful here. A lot of people pay 4-6x more to go from 95 pct quality to like 98. I guess it all depends on what you’re looking for and how much you can afford. I like everything coming from metabones and have used them on my Sony crops for a long time so I’m a little biased. I don’t think viltrox is a slouch though. For 150, it’s very good.

    I use a lot of manual vintage glass and it looks like the generic does a pretty decent job. That said, the extra versatility of the Viltrox makes it a no-brainer for $150. The Metabones is a ridiculous price and simply isn't worth the money. You're getting marginally better performance in some tests, but in others it's worse than the Viltrox and generic. Anyone who pays $800 for the Metabones needs their head testing. You can buy a couple of decent lenses for that price.

    I noticed that the Generic speedbooster produces a softer, less contrasting image and softens the sharpness. This allows you to combine two into one, i.e speedposter and CineBloom filter, recently promoted by Moment. Why buy a sharp speedbooster and a CineBloom filter when you can get things done with Generic? And this is how manual autofocus is usually used.

    Just got mine viltrox today thanks for the review it helped a lot. In general It worked pretty good with my 50mm 1.8 ii and gave me more wider look. Only confusing part for me that, I can't get to see my aperture goes lower then f1.8 on my camera screen even after the viltrox firmware update. The odd thing is, I have a regular ef to ef-m glassles adapter too (commulite) so I can compare. After comparison test between regular commulite adapter and viltrox, I realized my viltrox speedboster with same nifty fifty, same iso, and same shutter in 1.8 aperture performs slightly brighter then my regular commulite adaptor. I am confused that people on amazon reviews showing that they were able to see f1.2 on their camera screen with the same nifty fifty and eos m.

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад +2

      Does it stay at f1.8 with the speedbooster? Check the viltrox supported lens page, the mark ii version may not be supported. It will be slightly brighter as you get an extra stop of light in the sensor, thereore more depth of field and slightly better low light performance.

    • @ozanyildirim

      @@ZeekEOSZ Thanks! Good to know that.
      The connectors at the lens mount supply -whatever is put on- even while the cam is "off". This is by intention because some lenses need to retract some elements before you can put the lenscap on. And therefore they still need power after switching off the camera.
      Normally the controller in the lens or speedbooster gets the shutdown signal, retracts everything in a safe position and then puts itself into deep sleep mode for lowest power consumption.
      In my opinion this is a firmware issue with the viltrox, which can be fixed by an update.

I have Sigma apsc 17-50mm 2.8 which on speedbooster gives a vignetting on eosm sensor, since ML crops sensor even further this should get rid of vignette and I should get f2, closer to real focal lengh as speedbooster gives 0.71 reductiont? Would that be correct? Cheers.

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад

      Not sure if the sigma 17-50mm will actually mount to a speedbooster being an EF-s lens. But it would become F2 and no vignette with 2.5K RAW

      @@ZeekEOSZ thanks for reply, Ive found this on web: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4348779
      very interesting as I own both sigma 17-50 and tokina 11-16, Im most interested in pairing tokina glass with viltrox and ML on eosm body.
      Can you tell me if my focal calculation would be correct on this tokina at 11mm:
      1.6 apsc crop + 2.9 ML crop = 4.5 overall crop.
      then 11mm x 4.5 crop = 49.5mm
      then 49.5mm x viltrox 0.71 = 35.14mm full frame equivalent.
      Would that be correct?
      Thanks.

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад

      Well apparently recently we've found 2.5K 16:9 has a crop factor of 2.36x + 1.6x, so overall 3.96x Crop, so that should definitely work with the Tokina 11-16mm & Speedbooster. I use the Tokina 12-28mm and that works fine with the speedbooster and the high resolution modes.

    I'm sorry, but it's not a helpful test at all. Why didn't you do a stopped-down test with the field footage? At least the Gorilla (which appears the same as generic) speed booster (Nikon g f lens to Sony e) is just unusable at any f stop other than wide open to f4. From about f5.6 onwards, you get a coloured blob in the middle of the image. The Metabones will boast superior-quality optics. Which is why it's more expensive. I can't vouch for Metabones with Nikon mounts but I can with ef to e and there's absolutely no coloured ghosting and blobs at any f stop. Maybe it's a matter of 'you get what you pay for'?
