The Israel Palestine video was fucking wild even back then. You had the Palestinians go first and describe how harrowing the experience of being pushed out of their homes has been. And then the Israelites start talking about how inconvenient it is that Palestinians are there and how annoying they are….TO PALESTINIANS

Not Israelites. Israelis is the term you’re looking for. Israelites refers to the common ancestors of Jewish people, Samaritans, and many Palestinians who lived in the region thousands of years ago. Israelis are the current citizens of Israel.

Their Israel / Palestine video is especially bonkers imo. If Jubilee and RUclips existed in 1940s Germany I'm sure that they'd create a smug, condescending, melodramatic video where the Nazi deathcamp guys and their Jewish prisoners find some kind of moral middle ground
I was baffled at every clip! "They are hiding in the hospitals" So hostage negotiations should end with bombing a whole building including the hostages? How is a Palestinian supposed to argue with someone who has dehumanized him to this degree? Its beyond useless, its downright cruel.

@ajakakakak
Babes, they said they wanna have a convo with someone who thinks their rights are up for debate. As someone who has tried to talk about multiple former close friends about their LGBTQIA+ cronky opinions, sometimes it doesn't feel worth it to stick around with someone you know kinda counts you as disgusting. And the person you are responding said nothing about screaming, they were talking about not talking to certain people. So your comparison does not apply here (and I ask you to self-examine where it does come from).
Talking to these people who have hateful opinions is important, yes, but that entire burden should not be placed on the marginalised person they have these feelings towards. It's something everyone who considers themself to be an ally to these communities or wants to see change should also be doing, among other things.
I blame Jubilee as part of the reason everyone is so divided today. Most of their content is either flamebait or downright false advertising
I wouldn't say blame, more of a product of how media is consumed.
@@Mia-ii1szits both, the are only doing this garbage because this type of content has gotten more popular as people are getting more divided, and they are also actively contributing to this same problem by participating in it

I used to watch them for their mole videos because i thought they were silly. I started distancing myself right after middle ground became a thing/when i noticed them. Somebody once mentioned it but giving both sides a platform felt like when a teacher would stop a bully by blaming the behavior of both kids and not the aggressor
Anyways, sorry for the long rant I just really dislike jubilee because I find them shady and enabling
i think the only reasonable middle ground is have ever watched is the autism episode. i dont think jubilee wants debates, its just people getting angry at each other. for example, how could they put lgbt+ people right in front of homophobes/transphobes and not expect something bad to happen.
Also they often don't talk about real solid fact and bring in a tiktok they watched as evidence for their views 💀
It reminds me of TheShadeRoom. They say they make fun content just to show ppl on what’s going on in the media but they actually just purposefully rile ppl up to say harmful shit so they don’t have to say it themselves.
@@sarahbery what is reasonable abt having people with a marginalized disability try and explain their existence? the allistic people might think of it more often but its not gonna do anything for autistic people who are in a world structured directly against them leading to the high rates of suicidal ideation and unemployment seen in autistic individuals and its unlikely to spread any awareness or lead to further supportive resources and funds towards programs/organizations (Not autism speaks obviously lol)
(tho arguably our world structure isnt beneficial to anyone other than those wealthy and lucky enough to be born a certain way and in a position to escape and ignore problems)
while of course the most effective way to learn abt autism is from an autistic person, setting it up as a "debate" or discussion on youtube in which the title literally implies there is a middle ground to be found between two positions isnt doing that, it isnt educational nor from a place of good faith its cheap and exploitative click bait putting people in uncomfortable and disingenuous positions with a condition/state of existence/lifestyle thatll get views often with leading or probing questions looking for inflammatory or emotional answers

My favorite Jubilee moment is in their autism video, where they straight up made the most important part of the video (the bit on employment) a Patreon exclusive. For context the autism unemployment rate is 80%, so it'd be a very important topic to put in the video if they were actually trying to be informative.

“I think I’m gonna be neutral on this topic we should really hear out both sides.”
It’s very moderate neoliberal “mmm yes let’s have a debate over human rights” and then pit marginalized people against MEDIA TRAINED PROFESSIONALS. Pretty much no one ever walks away having gained better insight, all there is at best is an impasse and at worst making the marginalized groups out to be emotional and hysterical for having their own right to exist argued against right to their faces.
Your last point is one I really want to highlight. This type of content really feeds into the "straight cis white male of reddit" vibe I see all the time lately where, because *all forms of oppression are entirely hypothetical to them* they think oppressed people who are upset with their oppressors are being "aggressive" and "intolerant", "emotional rather than logical" and "unwilling to compromise", which in terms feeds into their smug sense of superiority because they're not emotionally involved.
Says the guy who probably doesn’t even know what human rights are.
In my opinion jubilee has like three outcomes: 1. You are already educated and are annoyed at the amount of platforming done to bigoted people 2. You're not informed and the bad ideas seem to have a lot more credibility than they do or 3. You're a bigot and you can use the other bigoted people in those videos to confirm your bias
Your points really clearly sum up how only side benefits from these discussion!! …no real “middle group”
I mean they are trying to show us the reality of the world. Yes they allow bigots to talk, but for guys like me, it's a reminder of how different bigots exist in this world and how to learn to overcome them. Unless the bigots express themselves how would we be able to fix their and similar minded people's problem
The underlying assumption behind all your points is that you’re right about everything and so there’s no point in any discussion. Are you willing to consider the remote possibility you could be wrong about something?
Middle ground is just outright depressing to watch, both because it's a "debate" between members of a marginalized community (seriously, how many "debates" about lgbtq have they done?) and people who are against them and because most of the time they walk away thinking the same things, just angrier. I just don't get the point of these, other than earning money on popular topics while also giving a platform to bigots.
even though they try to present as neutral i feel like theyre definitely more on the conservative side because the questions they ask are usually vile and almost always target the marginalized people in their videos. i get theyre trying to spark conversation between two polarized groups but thats just it, both groups are polarized. there is no middle ground that will be reached. i know me personally ive seen jubilee videos where i know i would never find a middle ground with one side and unsurprisingly thats what happens in the video.
Especially since they never get experts in or pause the "debate" and point out when someone has said something factually incorrect, deceptive, or manipulated context. They're willing to pump out absolute shit and call it a debate because it makes them money. Then they have the nerve to create content where they discuss getting their feelings hurt because people shit on the videos. Smh
@@harashe1000 that’s a great point to make. They do need some experts or researchers that can fact-check the debaters. That way, they can at least help prevent misinformation. Then again, just the concept of a marginalized community debating their rights with their oppressors is already flawed and dystopian honestly.
The comments are equally depressing. Especially with the ones about trans people. It sucks to see a whole community of people hate us for existing.
Maybe, just maybe, the people aren't always marginalised and the 'bigots' aren't always bigots. What if that's what's actually being debated...

Great video! My favorite Jubilee example was something like "Men's Right Activists VS Feminists"; the MRAs were all the type of terminally-online men who spend all day rehearsing rebuttals to feminist talking points as their primary hobby, and the "feminists" were just...some women. They seemed to have a very surface-level, pop-feminism understanding of gender issues (although that could have just been the Jubilee edit). No shade to those ladies but it takes a lot of knowledge about gender issues to genuinely engage with MRAs. Basically, it wasn't a fair fight at all!
Yeah, that is why I do not engage in online activism for anything especially mra
aren't guys allowed to talk about their feelings or issues (somethings MRAs advocate for) and people calling it "toxic masculinty" for those who don't do it?? calling that a "hobby" doesn't seem right, not to mention that jubilee is a leftist channel, so they want feminists to look like the rational ones while demonitizing the others (BTW, that "intersectional" chick in that vid told kursat "came with your little resarch or whatever...", to me, that's feminist attitude, not some random women).

I didn’t even watch that one bc I KNEW I’d get way too upset. @@user-sd6lg8lf5cIt's not that the discussions shouldn't be had, but that bad-faith discussions shouldn't be had. Jubilee brings on people who will be guaranteed to start a fight just because people like seeing extremists for different reasons. They either reinforce their beliefs or they're entertainment for people who disagree with them. The extremist character will talk over people, start arguments (not arguments as in debates, but literal yelling, screaming arguments), and a moderator (if there's one) will have to tell them to stop. It creates drama and can also make an underdog/kind character that people feel bad for if the extremist targets someone specifically. These discussions would be good, but not if they're run like how Jubilee does it. Jubilee only wants to make a story and a drama video for views, not host a real discussion where people calmly talk to one another about their different opinions with a real neutral moderator.

Thank you so much for making this video. Excellent video. I have a coworker who sometimes subjects himself to the horror of Jubilee videos, and whilst we've had occasional debates, we've found so much more empathy and, well, middle ground by just...talking. He's a cishet "centrist" and I'm nonbinary bisexual with a transmasc partner. But the most understanding and learning he's had about trans issues is just...us talking candidly.
Whilst he's still not perfect on things, such as not understanding they/them- you know what was productive? Not spending hours combing through dictionary origins and linguistic history on pronoun semantics, but finding a connection.
We're both autistic, and I noticed that whilst for me gender roles make no sense and seem arbitrary and restrictive to my autism brain, his autism and lack of 'getting' social cues caused the opposite conclusion- that gender roles just -are- and theres no reason why you'd want no part of it.
When I empathised and said 'man if I was dude (passing) I'd have no idea how to flirt I'd just stand there', it helped validate his insecurities about how its hard there on the dating scene, and when he was talking about the Jordan Peterson stats of 10:1 ratios on dating apps, I explained that women (passing) people kinda have to be choosy because there's a much more common fear of a dude being at worst a murderer or at best mildly shitty and not a good fit. When he was curious if my partner wanted The SurgeryTM, I explained that he didn't know, but if he feel safe wearing dresses he would- and when he was confused at that bc most trans rep on media is very gender-adhering I Brought up that he wore a dress for a Halloween party with friends as Marilyn Monroe as a joke but he was still a dude, and he understood it more.
Sure, he's not gonna get everything, and theres times I've 'lost' a debate or won't get him to get that singular they/them exists, but if he met my partner he wouldn't see them as 'that weirdo trans person' but as 'my coworkers partner, who likes supernatural like me and helped my coworker through some rough times and eats hot cheetos and gets the Struggle of Spicy Food Tummy Hurt' and even if he would do a microaggression or two, he would acknowledge him as a person that should be respected, not as a debate point to 'disprove' or a 'cringe comp' to gawk at.
Oftentimes a lot of seemingly Conservative talking points can be corrected with a mild nudge. For example, the Avatar 'Sokka's not sexist' was misattributed to 'being woke and not being able to do that anymore' but I chimed in that it prevented his character development and most people across the board agree that it was a bad change, and that its more important to show characters growing from bigotry than not having that bigotry in the first place. 'I'm angry about affirmative action' can usually be reasoned with 'I think it's a poor bandaid solution to a more complex problem and I hate that it's largely an optics move by corporations that don't want to actually help workers'- saying 'okay you're a racist fuckhead' just starts a debate that will get nowhere because you're both defending your points*.
However, I should also add that these conversations should only occur as long as people feel safe- if you're someone that's potentially threatened or a black person tired of having to bend over backwards to gently tell someone racism bad to a bad faith actor, you're well within your right to tell them to fuck off. Sometimes when an egregious reactionary short is on that I know will go nowhere I just dip out briefly or avoid conversation, and theres nothing wrong with that. (It's also why allyship is so important, to allow for these conversations to take place- if a white guy is talking about how you should be nice to brown people in a Sundown Town, the reward doesn't outweigh the risk as opposed to a black person talking about it).
Really nice video. My only problem is that after saying consumerism bad and you should encourage connection you shill your Patreon, though that's probably tongue in cheek I think adding an extra joke at the end would be a bit clearer.
Sorry for the wall of text akdhfjkwmsmg
One of the biggest problems I have with the 'Middle Ground' episodes is that one side will have people who have a career in media/debate, but then the other side is usually just random people who, at most, have a lot of instagram followers. It's pretty clear that they don't actually care about fairness, they just want heated moments that get them clicks.
Jubilee is so gross and disgusting. That being said, Saji looks cool as hell. the sheer vibes are so awesome. Also, that book seems really nice! It’s going on my reading list!
my mom was on one of their episodes, it was after i told her she had to do it because they were a huge channel and i watched them. she said that it was a horrible experience, putting people who are so obviously delusional about their beliefs in front of the people with opposing views is unproductive and harmful for those being oppressed. i feel like i am partly to blame for her having a traumatic experience on set just cause i helped convince her to do it, but i have since unsubscribed from them :/
The conservative trans people vs liberal trans people was badly put together. Blossom was just awful, and the rest of the liberals were ordinary people off the street. Meanwhile, many of the conservatives were professional pundits or had expertise in some of the questions being asked. If you're going to ask a question about Trump's trans military ban, but you only bother to bring an actual servicemember to one side, that's not going to be an enlightening conversation.
Yesss! Glad to see it brought up. That channel is so shameless.
Jubilee: can a pride of hungry lionesses and a pack of wildebeests find middle ground?
been WAITING on somebody to make a video on this
Me too. I’ve only ever seen people reacting to the middle ground stuff before this. I never got the appeal and thought it was weird so this video is nice
Tara Moonknee, Alice Cappelle, Tirrrb.
You're welcome.
@@monochromicornthetuna4256 thanks.
More RUclipsrs need to do the right thing and start getting sponsored by Big Weed. I'm tired of the oppression from Big Therapy and Big Perfume.
😭😭
Have been saying that for a while. Great video as usual
Free Palestine ❤❤
This is why I love Anthony Padilla's Assumption series. It is literally Jubilee, but they give a voice only to the ones who actually need it.
Fr and he’s not judging and everyone in the comments are so excepting and positive,….unlike every jubilee vid 😭
And on what basis do you decide who gets a voice?
People who have been interviewed in his videos have said that he clips parts of interviews to make the person he interviews more "entertaining" or seem less intelligent/sensible, so I'd beware of that
so what you’re saying is that you like his content..because it’s biased?
@@user-sd6lg8lf5c refusing to show pro-genocide people a good start lmao. The slippery slope argument is stupid because the line is just “is your ‘marginalized identity’ based on hating a group of people? Yes? Then you’re not going on.” That’s a pretty clear cut line that’s hard to make slippery
Jubilee is basically a RUclips version of that CNN show "Crossfire." It's just a debate theater where no one gains any insight on anything.
Jubilee be like: severely oppressed people and their oppressors. can they find a middle ground?
No?????
No fr r yall nuts 😂😂😂
The questions are always so... dehumanizing. So much so that sometimes jubilee has to skip the question because both sides indisputably disagree with the question.
the video starts at 2:15😛
P.S. Great content, Cheers!
Fantastic way to frame and discuss this
How?
Awesome, thoughtful video! I feel like Empathy is often twisted into an expectation to be polite to everyone, including oppressors.
thank you. haven't finished the video yet but you're so funny and on point with it. i haven't watched jubilee without it being a reacted thing because this shit is wild and stupid and just a public debate-finished and that's exactly it. that's what I've been trying to say
this is why i've always preferred cut. the people on there actually have mature, insighful conversations and the channel doesn't constantly try to profit off people's trauma.
Getting this recommended after they did fit men vs fat men and had on one of the fit and fresh guys and proceeded to let him insult the other guests, talk about conspiracy theories and be insanely misogynistic when it wasn’t even a topic at hand! Jubilee is terrible with these middle grounds because it’s just platforming people
Yeah, I’ve noticed that for a while. It’s been, just living their life vs hating on the people who live their life. Like that’s not a debate, one side attacks them, the other side defends themselves.
I've slowly started to drift away from "commentary youtubers" but your videos always hit. Very entertaining. Good.
These debates piss me off so much, nothing productive is happening at all. Debates arent fun or helpful if its one side trying to convince the other that they should be allowed to exist, that playing field is never even
I’m glad I’m not the only one who found those videos weird. It just feels so gross and even cruel to take someone from a marginalized community and make them speak to their oppressors who don’t respect them and want to take their rights away.
It reminds me of this old talk show where they brought on literal nahtzee white supremacists and wanted some Black men (and I think Jewish men too) to “have a conversation” with them. Like who the hell thinks that’s a good idea? These people will NOT get along and for good reason.
They just want a fight to break out between the people or have the awful people be awful and cause distress to others. It’s abhorrent.
CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE THAT HATE ME MENTIONED!!!!!!!
Omg I LOVED it in podcast form, I should read the book. I LOVE Dylan Marron, and that podcast was really helpful to me as a trans and queer teenager being cyberbullied
I love how Jubilee claims they want freedom of discourse then strike false copyright claims against content creators who express a different opinion in their reactions. I.e. aba and preach
I feel like you perfectly described a feeling I've had for a while about them but wasn't able to put into words. I actually used to watch their 'Middle Ground' series when I was 13-14 (ish, I could be wrong about the time frame) religiously and with time their content in general started to give me the 'ick' as i matured and learned more about the world around me, but I was never able to verbalise exactly what it was. So, thank you for making this video because you did exactly that and you did it wonderfully!
yes, thank you! they have always felt so weird and wrong. especially because it normalizes this very dangerous both sides-ism. human rights, genuine pain, plain facts vs. "but I don't like it". disgusting
Some things do have a middle ground
Genocide is not one of those things.
There’s a certain level of privilege I feel, to be able to be entertained by these intense debate videos. Cause even if the partakers wore literal clown costumes and full makeup, I wouldn’t be able to look past the fact that they discussed my rights to live and breathe as if it was a matter of ketchup versus mustard.
I absolutely think that debates CAN be conversations. My family is really into debating, but not this kind of debating but rather talking about our opinions and explaining why we think this and everyone comes out a little better from them because we can understand the other side a bit better.
I think healthy debating is extremely important and needs to be normalised
so glad I found your channel. can't wait to watch more. your point on approaching "debates" as conversations with empathy *chefs kiss*
This is genuinely a great video man well done, I am shocked more people didn't talk about this before, great job! 👏
Its not productive or a society to be like Jubilee to act like both sides in a discussion are equally smart or that there are only 2 sides to an issue.
I’m so happy someone is talking about this - and so well too omg THANK YOU!
ive been waiting for more videos about this and im so happy you made it
Im so glad someone finally made a video because you don’t even know how many times I’ve seen jubilees thumbnails and being like “are they serious right now?”
yess thank you for this !!!
Even the thumbnails of those videos upset me so I've never watched one but this is a super well made video and I'm definitely going to check out that book!!
I’ve been commenting this on some of their community announcements for a while now. Love the video!!
I love the shoutout to Dylan, I've loved his podcast for years now! He's such a beautiful soul who's just trying to truly have a conversation and understand where everyone's coming from as people ❤
i thought being in my dorm all week finally got to me when the intro started😭
Thank you for this, just leaving a comment to help your algorithm.
i have not seen a lot of people talking about this and it makes me so happy that you did!! jubilee has been giving me the ick for way too long
i feel like jubilee doesnt understand that some things should not be debated
And may I ask you who gets to decide, on what basis, and why, certain things should not be debated?
What shouldn’t be debated?
@@InsertNameHere911 human rights ig?
@@paggyness I agree they shouldn’t be debated but discussing them isn’t INHERENTLY bad
@@InsertNameHere911 yeah but jubilee's whole thing is "debating" (but i agree)
THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT THIS
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
clicked on this cause it looked interesting and it was a saji video! wahoo
U ate wit this thumbnail Saji
THANKYOUUU!!!! ive only read the title yet but THANK YOU!!!!!
amazing video as always, Saji :))!! You’re incredible. ( btw your curls are really popping!!)
Ive only read the title but i already agree
Yeah I think this is spot on. The issue I've always had with Jubilee is just that - they're forcing something for content that can only be productive when it's organic. You really have to be able to trust someone to have difficult conversations and that requires getitng to know them - not just cramming strangers in a room and making them duke it out. And I know this having had quite a few conversations with people who were anti-trans and getting them to shift a bit because they trusted me (trans guy) as a person and were willing to SEE ME AS A PERSON before seeing me as some Enemy Demographic. And yeah, the framing of both sides as having equal merit is despicable. I get really frustrated whenever these videos pop up in my feed.
Destiny vs JonTron got me into online debates, Vaush kept me around, and now I just watch clips of Hasan with his dog Kaya.
First video I’ve seen I got 2 minutes in and subscribed
