I assume Saavedro didn't connect the poems (or proverbs as I'd call them) with the shield because he'd seen and heard them so often in Narayan that they were just that to him: proverbs. EDIT: Apparently he was able to do that part.
I suppose the captions are so that if you play the game in a different language such as French the captions serve as a guide to what the text on the wall says in that language. In English it's kind of pointless since the text already is in that language. Which is weird, because the journals are in English anyways.
They would be the fourth fundamental idea about an Age from Atrus' journal. Remember Atrus stated throughout his journal: 1) Dynamic forces spur change. 2) Nature encourages mutual dependence. 3) Energy powers future motion. 4) Balanced systems stimulate civilizations. Since Narayan is meant to be the final stage in the boys' education, the missing tapestry must have the characters for "balanced systems stimulate civilizations" as that is the core principle that pertains to Narayan. I imagine that is why he tore those tapestries down.
Another option available now is to use steam or a similar program to launch through and use the overlay to quickly access any screenshots you take. When I played Myst III I had a small stack of A1 papers as underlay on my desk. Perfect for game notes and doodles. I sadly don't have a big enough desk to keep doing so anymore.
Dangit. I'm terrible with statistics. I wanted to find out how many possible words can be made with Narayan's written symbols. There are twenty possible pieces of each symbol, but I know it's not as simple as 20x20=400, because it is possible to have different numbers lit up in each one and in different locations. Anyone else here good with that kind of math? =P
Assuming each symbol is four words, it’s (number of words)^4, IF we allow repetition. Without repetition, it’s (#words)*(#words-1)*(#words-2)*(#words-3).
It might just be me, but I think the symbol for "Power" kind of looks phallic, if you accept that the bit on the right is just part of the outline of the "full picture," as it were.
I had a devil of a time copying down those symbols and making sure they were correct when entered into the machine. Without having a still image to compare, and only hand written symbols as a guide, it's very easy to enter a word incorrectly. And that was with me cheating using GameFAQs, which didn't have images at the time. (Looking at the 2001 guide right now.)
I find it hard to believe that Saveedro wouldn't have figured this out in 20 years right? EDIT: yeah, I guess that getting any further than this might not be feasible for him of course.
My take is that he was able to get the first three pretty easily, since they were the original symbols, but without Atrus’ journal, he wouldn’t have the forth symbol. The frustrating thing is, he wrote in his own journal that he did read Atrus’ journal but, horribly, missed the bolded phrases and their significance! Which, to be fair, he would have been reading in a hurry, afraid each second of being caught, so... But, honestly, with a few years on my hand, nothing else to do, and a finite vocabulary to work from... I feel like I could have powered through that puzzle. EDIT: Okay, there’s 66 total words, including both floors and the tapestries he tore off. The last symbol has four words, so assuming we don’t rule out any options, that’s 66^4 possible symbols. Let’s assume 20 seconds per try (you’d get them memorized pretty soon), and ten hours a day (gotta sleep and eat and whatnot), and going with 365 days a year, that’s... 28.88 years. But, look, you’d get REALLY fast at putting that symbols in! Let’s say FIVE seconds per try! That’s only... 7.22 years! Oh yeah. Totally doable. 😩
Daracaex There are 20 pieces. Each piece is either on or off. Two choices for the first piece (on or off), two choices for the second .... and so on. So 2x2x2 ... twenty times. That is 2 to the power of 20 which is 1,048,576 ... much bigger than 400 :D
If you go by the number of words, there are 27 405 ways to choose four symbols out of 30, assuming the order doesn't matter. However, since the order does matter, there are 657 720 ways to choose four words out of the 30 on the tapestries in the room.
There is one more Myst thing you could do Sven, though nobody would blame you if you didn't do it. There's a terrible game called Pyst that was a parody (I'm being generous with that) of Myst. I wouldn't expect you to ever LP it but it's there. Anyway, thank you so much for this excellent playthrough.
Those are not Narayan words, they are Dn'i words. The English words beneath them is what they translate to. They were hung by Atrus so that his sons could figure out how to access the age by dropping the (now) inner ice shield. The idea being that only when the truly embraced those core principles could they truly appreciate the worlds they would encounter by using the Art.
Sven is right, those are indeed Narayan symbols. You can verify this fact by reading the Myst III game guide. It can also be verified by seeing examples of D'ni writing in the series of Myst games.

Atrus always was crafty with his puzzles...good luck with this one Sven...and by that, I mean "It's Hammer Time" if you fail, lol.

I do wonder what words are displayed on the tapestries that Saavedro is wearing.

Just imagine if Atrus never gave us that journal of his now?

if the way back to the learning world was the linking book he left in the study how did he get that book out of Narayan in the first place?
"Head-On! Apple directly to the forehead!"

It'd be 2^20 if there's 20 possible and each can be either on or off.

He was able to figure out the proverbs, obviously, but the next steps need two people.

I was yelling MUTUAL DEPENDENCE at the screen. And I'm curious, which smartphone are you the proud owner of? (I'm hoping you're proud of it)
The Japanese language is all about why say many word when few word do trick
You know about Japanese. I wish I did considering that I watch anime 😅
