    An interesting note for those that may not know: Saavedro was not only in Lord od the Rings as Grima Wormtongue and many other movies but he is also very famous for playing "Billy Babbit" in the iconic film "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" which won him an Academy Award nomination. Also in that film were Jack Nicolson, Danny Davito, Christopher Lloyd and the giant and awesome Indigenous actor Will Sampson.

    I hope that eventually Atrus was able to tell Saavedro the whole story (specifically about Sirrus and Achenar) and that his friendship with the people of Narayan was restored. Also I truly hope his family survived and that he found peace and happiness. I think this was my favorite Myst game so far. I miss your let's plays Sven, I hope you return one day.

    Thank you so, so much for this. I picked up the game after many years away from it, and I absolutely could not follow its logic. Looking up online walkthroughs would have ruined the fun -- I really did want to understand how I was supposed to be thinking things through. Very helpful to see someone else do it.
    I thought the puzzles were much harder than you did, and it didn't bother me at all that the designers gave themselves a very clever excuse in the idea of the game ages. And then, the story with Saavedro made the whole thing both dramatic and dark. I thought it was pretty brilliant. Riven is still my favorite in the series -- like everyone else, I think. But I think I give Myst III higher marks overall than you do.

    • @Filip-pz7wu
      @Filip-pz7wu 3 года назад +1

      I agree completely. I don't think any game comes close to matching Riven aside from Uru personally, but I do think Myst III and Myst IV are excellent as well. It is a shame what happened to Myst V however.

  • @IgnisInCaelum

    Pay no attention to that plot hole! Also, I believe that's Releeshahn's Descriptive Book. If it is destroyed, no Book will /ever/ link to Releeshahn, including currently existing Linking Books. People would be able to get out, but there would be no way to get in or even send a message to the inhabitants to let them know that their Age was now permanently inaccessible.

    I've never played any of the Myst games before, but I had older cousins when I was young that were obsessed with them. Now i understand why. At the time I was a little too young to really grasp the story or the puzzles. I've watched your LPs of Myst and Riven, and now this one. So far Exile has been my favorite, mostly just on the performance of Saavedro as the antagonist. Very compelling.

    Riven was my first LP because it's my favourite game (I had no notion I'd keep going this long back then). Then I did Uru because Shady was doing Myst 3 and Nora requested Uru. Then Myst V because it follows Uru. Then Myst IV because it was the only one left that Shady hadn't done. :)

But hey, you got me through pneumonia, all the coughing, pain and high fever with Myst 3 Exile. Made me forget about it for awhile with your patient exploration of these fantastic ages. So I will also take that which is good from the past and hopefully move on to build a brighter future. Wish you all the best.

    you may have shown all possible bad endings, however, there is one other bad ending that you missed. it's a little tricky to do, but as long as you don't set your sights on Saavedro's grieving and focus on changing the levers, then head back up to the power switch, you activate another bad ending. so all your bad endings "have not yet been written."

    I always wonder how both Sirius and Achenar got to Narayan, since the shield puzzle in its current state requires two people...with one remaining behind...to solve.
    Maybe Atreus added that in as a protection after S and A nearly destroyed Narayan?

  • @isestrex
    @isestrex 11 лет назад +1

    Sven, the plot suggestion at 7:10 doesn't hold. Saavedro thought we were Atrus, remember. And Atrus obviously knew both the phrases and the Narayan language/symbols. It's either a plot hole in the story development or Saavedro just forgot he left it down there. He certainly didn't seem to think through the many possibilities of the shield. No doubt if you showed him that you picked up the Tomahna book, he would have cursed himself "idiot!" yet again.

Thankfully I picked up Myst Masterpiece recently and still have all but one of the Riven discs. No longer playable but I have it for sentimental value which is something that game holds all kinds of, for me. I loved watching you play through it again, even if Voltaic was a really crap age in my opinion.

    What I don't get is why Atrus had the descriptive book under that glass instead of in a more secure location, and only a linking book for general use. Because changing a descriptive book after linking to it is bad form, so you might as well put it in a very secure location. A little fuzzy thinking on Atrus's part there.

  • @protoborg
    @protoborg 3 года назад

    Remember what Saavedro said at the top of the building? Links are doors that do NOT close behind you. He also hinted that if you leave without helping him, he will kill you. He placed the book here knowing you can get it. After all, he did have access to this area as he had already solved the access to the inner shield.
    Though, if you use the linking book without freeing him and the inner shield active, he can't actually kill you. Though, that is a bit of a dick move.

    When I played this-back in 2003, I think-it first occurred to restore both shields. However, as would likely happen had it been real, I feared he would angrily pursue me if he saw me ascend the stairs. Hence, I instead chose to trust him, making the aforesaid my second choice.

    I wonder whose decision it was to add Yeesha to the game, did Presto studios do that themselves, or did cyan tell them to do it? I mean, Myst III is before any cyan myst/uru game with her in it so presto might of done it themselves and cyan and ubisoft used her quite significantly in their games. However, cyan might of made them do it as they had already planned it so wanted to make the story line flow better as she was to become more significant in later games. Just curious as all.

  • @Mitsukara

    Having grown up with Myst and Riven, but not so much the rest of the series, I have to say this one does actually impress me and hold up quite well. That uncertain-navigation-clicking thing is a big problem, but I do really like the story. It's true the ages are a bit arbitrary, so if verisimilitude is your deal then Riven is definitely stronger on that front, and I can respect that. And I am quite fond of Riven, too.
    But, thinking back to the first Myst, which wasn't nearly as realistic and was often full of random, almost cartoonish things (...probably since the developers were coming off of works like "The Manhole"), I think this game is more like the first, and I don't really mind that. And to Myst III's credit it is full of memorable visuals in it's training worlds, and cute creatures, so while they are not believable worlds, they do have memorable fantastical qualities, so I think that helps it.
    All three of the first Myst games have been excellent up to this point. Now to find out what the others are like. I hope this isn't a "You've had the best, now try the rest" moment for me... Ah, well, your commentaries have been so good that they'll probably enrich the other games whether they're good or not. (I'm also curious to try some of your non-Myst LPs, as it's been five years since any of these.)

    Re: how both Sirrus and Achenar could get past the barrier into Narayan:
    I think originally, that wood door was closed and locked from the outside. When the boys came, they solved the first 3 patterns, turned off the small shield, then got the clues to finish the 4th pattern. On their way back in they unlocked and opened the door. Then they flipped the switch to open the large barrier, went thru the door and left. The door stayed open and vines grew and blocked the doorway.
    -Or so I think ;)

    +1wngdngl I think the game assume the Stranger, if using the Tomahna book, wouldn't have had that foresight. Either way, Rehleeshahn hasn't been rescued, so it's still a bad ending. And even if Rehleeshahn had a Tomahna book, Atrus would lose all his hard work on the age.

  • @tomysshadow
    @tomysshadow 11 лет назад

    Hmm, that's strange. I had no success trying to capture Myst III: Exile with Fraps. I ended up using the latest development version of Taksi, which worked but is also quite glitchy due to the fact it was left unfinished and untested, and presumably will not have a stable release because it was last modified in 2006.

  • @gidelix

    I am really sad that you didn't look around the part of Narayan you could reach after opening the outer shield again. And also you didn't point out that the whole age turned red afterwards. Except of that, your LP was fantastic. Could you comment the bad endings too?

  • @1wngdngl
    @1wngdngl 11 лет назад

    Hmm....It seems that if the stranger didn't want Saavedro to follow them to Tomahna, then they could link through while holding the book over the edge of the platform, so Saavedro couldn't get at it.
    I also wonder why losing the Rehleeshahn book means that Atrus can never go there again. Didn't he leave any Tomahna books in Rehleeshahn when he was last there? Won't one of the D'ni come looking to Tomahna looking for him, eventually?
    I think the multiple endings to this game are very satisfying

    Thank you for this. Played this game back in the day when it was new. I must admit I had to cheat at the end with the tapestries.
    And he bashed my head in a couple of times :) before I did the end you did.
