I know the romantic relationships and friendships are important, but what Laura and Liam brought to table as twin brother and sister is absolutely amazing.
One thing I always appreciate about critical role is that they know that a good story is worth more than a happy ending. Having Vax go with the raven queen is a million times more impactful than anything else.

It more depends on where you go, and therefore what kind of life you led/what kind of person you were in life. Typically you end up in a place that you find satisfying/deserve to be in, ie. a battle-loving barbarian or fighter might end up in Ysgard, where they get to challenge powerful and deserving rivals to combat on a daily basis, and even if they die they rise again, no worse for wear, the next day. Or if you were a peace-loving person who worked to make the world a better place, whether it be something as climactic as fighting scourges or as simple as helping your neighbors you could go to the fields of Elysium, or even Mount Celestia, and enjoy eternal peace. Unless I'm missing something, anyway.
I don't know about half-elves... but for full blooded elves it's actually somewhat kind. They are constantly reborn, each birth is an elf who has lived before, and will live again. So it's entirely possible for, as an example, a full-blooded Vax TO find his way to his beloved in his next life... even if neither is aware of it. I don't know if Half-Elves are the same, though.
@@TheLunarguardian I am fairly certain elves in Matt's world don't work that way. You're thinking Tolkien elves. In Matt's world, in order to make it work that way there's a whole bunch of things like consecution and the beacons, but now I'm getting into spoiler territory Vax's soul went to the Raven Queen, forever, probably becoming a psychopomp for her followers. Even if he were a full elf, they would not be reborn. That goes entirely against the will of the Raven Queen, who believes in a person's fate being the final word for their soul
Probably the most heartbreaking moment in the entire series. They saved the world and defeated an evil god only to lose Vax because the Raven Queen couldn't show any more favouritism

I can't watch this death scene without crying. Especially since I'm a twin and the dialogue between Vax and Vex is so true and real. "I feel like she's taking part of me away". It's exactly how I would feel with my sister. Truly incredible roleplaying.
The whole twin thing was a spur-of-the-moment adjustment because Liam yoinked Laura's first choice of a half-elf rogue character. And now they're so siblingly it's ridiculous.
I only discovered Vox Machina for myself finally this week. And i have been slowly falling for Vax character. He looks and sounds ellegant yet he is just so ordinary. So he feels very much alive. Like a common friend you met along the way in your life at some point. First thing was me reading a spoiler about his end in one of yt clips, even before i started watching the series. Then i noticed i kinda begin to actually fully love him. And i didnt wanna admit first. I am glad i read the spoiler because being ready for character's death is so much better than to be broken by it. With Vax, i like how his demise was something that was determined far before the actual death. So every Vox Machina fan, no matter of when they joined on series, could not be broken by it but be ready to let him go. I wanted to avoid your animation like hell but i couldnt resist at the end. The way you drawn character's emotions here is very bittersweet. But if fan animation hits so hard i am actually afraid how much tragic it would be when this scene would be officially animated. Bruh. I don't know what happen to the guy the went in that black lady. Or what this is from. But I have never cried so hard. Main this is going to stick with me.
I know it's super late, but in a short story, about why did it happened (don't read if u want to watch Campaign 1, but if u watched this cinematic, well you already had the biggest spoiler xD) Vax became a paladin of the Raven Queen (godess of death) with a deal of ressurecting his sister. Near the end of campaign he died in a way, when there was nearly no chance for him to come back to life. So Vax decided to make a deal with Raven Queen - she'll bring him back to life, but he'll live only long enough to kill Vecna (freshly ascended god, their enemy and enemy of the Raven Queen). And after killing Vecna this is the scene of Raven Queen taking Vax with her and at the end of a tunnel he sees his mother, who died when he was young. I reccomend you to watch the original clip.
Something about “I never had a greater friend than you” hits me SO HARD. I’m not even the closest with my sister and her death would crush me. I can’t even imagine losing a twin.
I knew I was gonna cry all over again when I saw this... Didn’t even make it 30 seconds, and was straight up weeping by the end... The quality of this is fantastic, it’s just how I imagined it. Thank you for this... just, thank you.
So many of them saying they don't accept it and that they'll find him.... But there never was a return for the Champion of Ravens... Not until after Percy had already passed of old age... But maybe he visits each of them at the end of their days.
Scanlan "I wish I could've done something" he was saving his wish spell for this moment I just know it. To bad he needed to use it to counterspell 🥺. Roll over Try not to cry Cry a lot
For me, Vax's farewell harkens back to B5's final episode: Sleeping in Light. It's somber. It's quiet. And it's damn near perfect. As much as I wish Scanlan had succeeded in saving Vax, I'm glad he didn't, because otherwise we'd have been robbed of possibly the most powerful moment in the entire campaign. It couldn't have been more perfect if it were planned from the beginning.
For those who aren't aware, when I say B5, I'm referring to Babylon 5: a sci-fi show from the 90s. The CGI is dated, the first season was a seriously slow burn, and you could tell the production budget was next to nonexistent, but the show boasts some of the best writing TV has ever seen. Can't recommend enough that you at least give it a chance.
I have watched this and the actual scene so many time and no matter what I'm doing, I have never been able to hear "I've never had a greater friend than you" without ending up a sobing mess.
ashamed of myself for just now seeing this many months later but my god did this hit me hard. got me in tears dammit. good to know this scene still breaks me 3 years later. one mark of a good scene is the difference in elevation. you do this wonderfully with the gnomes and grog and the raven queen and keyleth and theres just so much attention to detail. also. how fucking dare you include the keyleth vax goodbye wave. that shit sent me from misty eyed to heartbreak immediately
Haven’t watched much of C1, but I love little clips like these. Thanks for doing such amazing work. Hearing they story of Vax and the Raven Queen inspired me for my own little take on it with a Druid. Can’t wait to see how mine pans out.
@@ddisaster626 read my post again. I never state this will be next season. I do say season 3 will be sad (Cloak and Dagger, Bard’s Lement etc). My comment for this was that the series finale will rend me. Now I understand in some country season and series are used interchangeably or mean the opposite. In the U.K. season is the batches and series is the whole show.
This was definitely the most emotionally charged scene in the entire history of Critical Role. Liam is hands down one of the best actors I've ever seen, and deserves industry recognition. I expect to see him with every award out there someday. The rest of the gang aren't exactly slouches either, but Liam totally ripped my heart out. And, dang it, I'm getting all weepy - AGAIN! . . . Your animation was pretty amazing, too. Glad you took your time: well worth it!
I know many people who think that gaming is not a valid method of communication. I watch this, see the original one with the looks on their faces, feel the emotions, and I think 'how can you not think that this is valid?'
Stories told through tabletop roleplaying can be messy, that's simply a part of the nature of improv and games of chance. But it can also convey something that I've never seen in any other medium of storytelling. That genuine, raw, unscripted emotion that comes with the camaraderie built up between real people and the adventure they created together. It gave the story the power to be silly, and exciting, and heartbreaking in a way that could have ended in any number of ways, and it all came together beautifully in one.
Why does this wreck me so much?! Your art is beautiful. This was incredibly well done. I'm crying in my coffee now, and will continue to hide in my cube until I stop sniffling... What a Friday morning.
Awesome just awesome. The emotions on the characters' faces were amazing. You hit the emotional beats expertly. Vex saying no when her brother approached her is my favorite moment of the stream and this animation
Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference.
This is a masterful piece of art and I love it, but at the same time how dare you. How dare you make me feel a whole new level of hurt by seeing this scene animated so well. You pierced my chest with the Bloodaxe and I’m crying tears of salt and sorrow all over again. Brilliant job.
Incredibly well done!! :D This makes me realize how much I absolutely need this scene to be animated. (Here's to hoping for at least 10 seasons of Vox Machina the animated series). Great use of the original soundtrack as well! Thank you so SO much for your hard work, and for sharing your talent with the rest of us.
I started my CR1-journey by watching this video, for some stupid reason. Cried like a baby then. Not knowing the players, the plot, the reason for the good bye. Nothing. Cried like a baby when this scene came up in CR. Knowing the whole story. Watching this video again now... Now I'm crying and want to scream my lungs out. It hurts. So bad. Awesome video. Love it. Should absolutely have more views. Thank you for making it.
Wow, I started crying within seconds of the animation starting. I am so lucky to have found this show that can make me feel so hard for characters like this, it gives me hope ya know.
I’ve always wondered how that fight would go. Had Vax not been so great with his send off would a rested Vox Machina have a chance against a goddess? I’d love a one-shot where they fight the Raven Queen with the help of Kimac Kerr, Kash, Zahra, Allura, and Gilmore. Combat would be an absolute pain and take forever but It would be a great excuse to make the fight hard as hell
Even after so much time has passed since I first saw this... every time- EVERY TIME he gets to Vex, I fall apart. Great job on this! Such a beautiful moment and you captured it so well!
The art is fantastic, the emotions brought across well. I wish I could go in and run a noise removal on the dialogue clips to make the cuts less obvious, but I'm an audio nerd and lots of folks probably didn't notice. All in all, well done and thank you so much for sharing.
That was definitely something I wish I could have had more control over (audio has never been my forte), but I'm glad it didn't take away from the experience! Thanks for watching! In the future, are there any programs you would suggest for such a thing?
@@gingeranya6961 The easiest is probably Audacity, as it's free open-source software and the Noise Removal function is pretty good. You just need a section of the background hum on its own to make the "noise profile" so it knows what to remove. Then you select everything and go back into the function to actually run it. Adobe Audition lets you fine-tune it more, and select everything while the dialog box is still open the first time, but is expensive. I imagine most audio-editing programs have something similar, but those are the two I've used.
I recently got caught up with the first campaign and now into the second and I admit, I cried at this scene. Now watching this animation, it’s making me tear up again. This was just beautiful.

They went to the afterlife,. It's from a Dungeons and Dragon's Podcast Called Critical Role this was Campaign 1 the party name was Vox Machina
This hurts more than watching the cast crying.. stop cutting onions people! :'(
So many of them saying they don't accept it and that they'll find him....
But there never was a return for the Champion of Ravens...
Not until after Percy had already passed of old age...
But maybe he visits each of them at the end of their days.
I'm glad someone did it.
This moment chokes me up everytime.
Scanlan "I wish I could've done something" he was saving his wish spell for this moment I just know it. To bad he needed to use it to counterspell 🥺.
Roll over
Try not to cry
Cry a lot
They beat one god and were ready to fight another that same day
For me, Vax's farewell harkens back to B5's final episode: Sleeping in Light.
This is going to kill me when it happens on the show
I am legit scared for my nervous system i dunno if it would handle it
Coming here after season 2. Season 3 is going to be rough but the series finale, will rend my soul.
@@georgehancock652 We won't be getting this till the last season we gotta wait till season 5
I discovered CR during C2. I've come truly appreciate Laura and Liam's acting skills during this scene.
Same here. I look forward to the animated series giving me C1
is been how many years? and this scene still gets me to cry so much. Gj
Oh fuck.
Havent even watched C1, but fuuuuck im crying now.
God, I am crying a waterfall's worth of tears right now. This was amazing, thank you for making this and making me relive this moment again.
And now I'm crying. Phenomenal job.
Looking back on this again, I fear what will happen in season 3
How do y’all think Percy would react to meeting with Caleb, and Vax meeting Molly?
"Im not crying, youre crying!"
EVERYONE IS CRYING!!!
Why does this wreck me so much?! Your art is beautiful. This was incredibly well done. I'm crying in my coffee now, and will continue to hide in my cube until I stop sniffling...
What a Friday morning.
Thank you for this! Let’s just say the scene with Vax and his mother couldn’t be more perfectly timed in my life. Thank you!
I instinctively avoided this video for a long time, but today I just needed to release some emotion. Thank you so much.
Awesome just awesome. The emotions on the characters' faces were amazing. You hit the emotional beats expertly. Vex saying no when her brother approached her is my favorite moment of the stream and this animation
I feel like it would have been stupid but for some reason before he left I wanted him to leave a note to Scanlan saying “Jenga”
Okay I’m not gonna cry. I’m a grown man. I’m not gonna cry. I’m not gonna *cries like a sprinkler* damn you Liam O’Brien!
This is very, very well done. Wonderful job! It captures the emotion of the scene... we're all sobbing, in the best way possible.
It's been six months since I saw that episode and now I'm here, crying all over again.
Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference.
That was the most heartbreaking and saddest goodbye I ever seen. It really makes you cry and I tried not to but somehow I shed a tears. 😢😢
This is beautiful. You got me crying all over again
I kept muttering “don’t cry, don’t cry”.
I cried.
God, it took me everything I had to not cry. Never had to pull myself together like this.
Just cry already! It's cardio for the soul!
7:42 in the damn morning and I’m already crying
I feel that
Vox Machina began as a gift to Liam, and so to did the story end with his character.
Every single time I watch any version of this scene, I will cry. So beautiful!
I'm a grown ass man and I'm crying. I'm crying my eyes out. Bravo and well done.
I'd love to see a one shot with them all on the other side fighting the Raven Queen for shits and giggles celebrating afterwards win or lose.
OMG THIS IS STILL ONE OF THE MOST EMOTIONAL BEAUTIFUL SCREENS IN ANY MIDEA EVER
How dare you make me feel this again?!?!? Damn fine job!
After all this time and it still brings me to such tears.
Beautifully done.
Even after so much time has passed since I first saw this... every time- EVERY TIME he gets to Vex, I fall apart. Great job on this! Such a beautiful moment and you captured it so well!
God… imagine what this would be like in the new critical role series, I really hope they can do the scene justice like this.
You blink. And its just feathers.
This will never not make me cry
3:16
“I feel like she’s taking part of me away”
“I’ll bring it with me.”
Dam
Ah, thank you so much! I'll be sure to check both options out (knowing me, the free one is the more likely option lol)!
The sas part of all of tgis is Keylith will be the last one to pass she os a level 20 Druid they age slowly.
I recently got caught up with the first campaign and now into the second and I admit, I cried at this scene. Now watching this animation, it’s making me tear up again. This was just beautiful.
"I feel like she's taking part of me away."
"I will bring it with me. To remind me of you."
FUCK that hits hard
This is so damn beautiful! I keep watching this moment from the show, tearing up every time, but it's the first time i watch this animation, and i love it. I love the animation, the art style of the characters, the music. With all my heart: thank you! And great job.
It’s been a while since I watched the finale but good lord this had me CRYINGGGGG so beautifully done
*Cries* OH MY HEART! ah well done, nice camera angles and chacater beats. Love your drawing style as well. Nicely done!!! Crit role animatics are the best.
