I keep coming back to this animatic. The sound editing. The flashbacks. The details. I legitimately bawled the first time I saw this and continue to tear up every time I see it. GOD. IT'S SO GOOD.
Thrills and Chills! The way you showed Yasha's change in demeanor... the way how she might've been before her encounter with the stormlord. And the flash back to all of her positive interactions with the M9 and Jester especially. think of the narrative throughline we could tie with her rolls. We've all been there groaning when Yasha couldn't roll higher than 10 so what if (for when we eventually get a M9 show/comic series) Yasha after her time with Oban, on an unconscious level was holding back in fear of reliving the memories she wants to repress. and those moments when she would wreck hell on the battlefield were her letting go out of a desire to protect her allies, her NEW family.
Everything about this is amazing! I love love love the way you interpreted Jester's double as a manifestation of The Traveler at 1:39! It is so in character that he would be kinda smug about blocking Yasha. He's protecting someone he cares about/ feels a bit possessive over AND defying the machinations of another powerful entity. You put so much detail and so much character into every moment! Really incredible work!
Ok, there are some good CR animatics out there. There are some great ones. But I think this one takes. the. cake. Incredible visual storytelling, beautiful artwork. You drove the emotion of this scene home so well. Incredible work!
I actually remember this episode a lot more than I'd want to. You captured so many little details. I remember that strength check Beau made to wrestle Fjord from the laughing hand's.....hand. I was on the edge of my damn seat. So many clutch rolls, just to retreat. And you can tell they are all massively confused...everyone except Matt 'no mercy' Mercer.
I genuinely thought they were about to lose half the party when I watched it. The Hand was fucking brutal, and Yasha unchained could potentially wipe the party on her own.
@@yooooo8600 You're not wrong, the struggles of a Barbarian lol. However she is capable of dropping just about any of the Nein with a semi lucky round of combat. She has about a 1/5 chance in any given round of combat to crit and it's lights out.

I love this so so much! I finally started watching CR when they went on hiatus from the pandemic and by that time I've had a lot of the big events of this campaign unintentionally spoiled for me. But this episode I think was the first "big thing" that I had no prior knowledge about and it was such a shock. You captured the emotion and intensity of this battle so beautifully and I love the addition of the flashback! And then it was such a treat to find out that you also were the one who did the "Hi I'm Jester" animatic that made me want to start watching CR. Thank you for sharing this!
I have been holding off on watching this video until the moment, because RUclips has been suggesting it to me for *weeks*. Just finished ep69 and came straight here. Absolutely amazing. Broke my heart with the Jester flashback bit, loved the whole Traveler-Jester-duplicate thing - that was really cool. And just the way everything was animated, loved it all so much, even if it made me want to cry again.

Correction: This *is* why you dump wisdom.
Both
I dump wisdom because this, story wise, is an awesome thing to happen and so fun to play, cause I gotta dump something.
Even so, I think she rolled something like a 2 or a 3. There wasn't any escaping the charm on that roll.
You gotta dump something... Sadly Barbarians usually dump Wisdom and Intelligence... and this is what you get...
The shot of the laughting hand walking through the fire is amazing and terrifying. I love it!
The traveler:🖕😂🖕
@@xenocide1307 Technically they could cast anything with a wisdom or intelligence or charisma save against yasha and she would basically auto fail
@@yooooo8600 You're not wrong, the struggles of a Barbarian lol. However she is capable of dropping just about any of the Nein with a semi lucky round of combat. She has about a 1/5 chance in any given round of combat to crit and it's lights out.
@@xenocide1307 1/5? Is that how the math works out when you have advantage? I'll take your word for it, but it seems a bit high. Yasha has no additional way to get crits so I'm assuming you're just talking about Reckless attacks. Of course if she used her skin gorger ability she would get a crit on a 19 or 20, but she has literally never used that ability, assumedly because Ashley doesn't even know it exists
@@yooooo8600 Yeah, two attacks with advantage is four chances out of twenty, reducing to 1/5. If she used the skin gorger ability it would be 4/10, so 40% up from 20%.
Holy...shit.... THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER WATCHED AND I AM CRYING! Gods, this artwork and animation is sooo freaking detailed with emotions and UGH! I CAN'T GET OVER THIS!
I'm still laughing at the traveler flipping her the double bird.
I have literally never shed a tear for any show or movie or anything entertainment based... Until now. I'm actually crying rn, you did an amazing job capturing what happened. Welp. On to ep 70 (Also love the traveler's double middle finger)
been on an animatic binge now that I'm all caught up- this is by far the most well-executed, heart-wrenching rendition of this scene I could have possibly asked for! My GOD you did such a good job with the fight choreography, and smoothing out the chaos of the moment, and bringing in the flashbacks with jester for added effect was just- Ugh!
What I'm saying is, I love this.
I've just started watching the second campaign and finished this episode. Your take on this scene is FANTASTIC. Absolutely got goosebumps. Edit: Can't stop rewatching this! I love how you captured the desperate nature of the battle, incorporated the Jester/Yasha flashbacks, and made the Laughing Hand look SO AWFUL AND HORRIFYING. And the last, plaintive cry from Jester as the doors close on Yasha - perfection.
Wow, this is easily one of the best animatics I've watched for Critical Role. Everything from Jester's Mirror Image to Caleb's Wall of Fire was perfectly done! I got chills through the whole thing!! And I loved the little bits of humor too. Just wow, amazing
I love how the Traveler was part of this animation, and the flashbacks. I am so happy you did this with hard work and passion. Loving this content!
Idk how I got to this video but this scene is what got me into critical role. My husband showed me a highlight because he was trying to convince me that we needed to try D&D and after that I binged all of S2 until the pandemic hit the week I caught up. Now I'm all caught up and almost done with S1 and this scene still gets me. Such a good animation!
Edit: I can't stop watching this and am now crying thank you, please send this to Art Dad
SO GOOD. Top 8 moments:
1) 0:59 The flashback montage - the selection of Jester moments, the POV perspective, and the music
2) 1:56 The tension I felt when Beau rushed back in to get Fjord
3) 0:55 The way we enter the flashbacks
4) 1:33 The way we exit the flashbacks
5) 1:51 The Wall of Fire, specifically the way the 'camera' moves
6) 2:42 Giving this moment of melodrama the cinematic treatment it deserves
7) 0:33 The slow walk of a new antagonist
8) 0:00 A creative way to warn about spoilers
You missed the best part of Artigan saving Jester
The way the laughing hand moves his head first when running is very creepy for me somehow XD
Absolutely, reminds me of the way Hollows move in Bleach
Still coming back to this animatic months after I've finished the Mighty Nein's story and it still hits just as a hard as when I saw this for the first time after watching the episode raw. I sincerely hope that this animator is doing great things in their life, and has a stable and lucrative career.
I do like how at 1:37 you showed the traveler protecting jester as she retreats. I also was astounded how you portrayed what happened as everyone was attempting to evacuate
Yasha's face when jester touches it is what got me jesus
The sudden shift in music punched me in the gut.
this video had me crying for 2:50 and then laughing my ass off when the traveler showed up and flipped double birds for a hot second
Right there with you omg what a torrent of emotion!
anytime i feel numb , i come back and watch this and it reminds me that I still have emotions. this is soo well put together and brings so much emotion to this scene. also laura yelling yasha with that much emotion in her voice is soul crushing. just brilliant.
I cried. Well played...
First time ive seen someone cut matts dming from the scene and i love it. Its how its supposed to be done, shown, not told. Beautiful work my dude, keep it up!!
Caleb's spells look incredibly detailed. Love it!
Oh my god! I’m sitting here in my car, with a rainy face because of this... the sword reflection/flashback transition, the random Jester screaming out, and the Traveler’s assist were all WONDERFULLY done!
I loved the details, even down to them mouthing words as they fled. And I especially appreciated the angles of Obann falling, that's a difficult angle to animate as fluidly as you did!
My. Favourite. Animation. AMAZING. Love the music, the way you did the spells, they way you portrayed the moments of levity (like Beau yeeting tf out, getting stuck in the door) THE FLASH BACK OH MY GOSH. I come back every now and then to rewatch this. It's honest to god, my FAVOURITE video in the entire fandom. Thankyou SO MUCH
This is incredible. You really told the story fantastically, that flashback was great. It was like watching how I felt when watching the show.
Agreed!
legit started bawling when u did the flashbacks with jester it made it hurt so GOOD
Everyone: makes meaningful comments
Me who has only watched animations of critical roll: um 11 days?
This guy knows some C U L T U R E

Kobalds can technically live hundreds of year but subterranean Kobalds don’t have a good sense or idea of time.
@@hunterduncan1078 I’ve always interpreted it as this particular tribe of Kobold(Spurt’s tribe) lives in very very poor conditions and they either tire themselves out by exhaustion while digging, encounter terrible monsters or starve to death very easily, thus the shorter lifespan. And in spurt’s case, he’s probably seen some shit with his brother killed by a slime and having to collect all those items in ELEVEN DAYS.
This is so beautiful and so emotional and I LOVE how you made this really sad moment into something even more heartbreaking. You are so talented. And the "YASHA!!" at the end was so great!
I totally cried. Good job guys. I just finished episode 71, so this is still fresh.
this is so good. im very struck by the way you interpreted jester's armor class with her duplicate taking the hit and it morphing into the traveller i watched that bit a bunch times i absolutely love it. and the montage of jester in yashas memories, i cried so good job.
Omg I'm CRYING! The expressions, the flashback, you conveyed the emotions of this moment so well! I love the way you draw everyone too.
That fuckin moment where her mirror image faded into the traveler flipping the bird is badass
my favorite part of the whole animation
Holy Sh!t....damn that was storied so well. The music, the flashback, the grim smile. Wow! Thank you for sharing this with everyone.
Never seen Critical roll, but I understand exactly what’s happening, well done. The little elf’s reaction to her girlfriend getting mind controlled is heartbreaking
That’s actually really funny, because Yasha is a lesbian, but she’s dating the one that got enlarged (Beau). Jester (a tiefling, but she def looks like an elf) has more of a little sister role to basically everyone in the party.
LOL
@@dweebicusmaximus "sister to everyone in the party" fjord is right there?
It’s very funny that you call Laura’s character “the little elf” if you’ve seen campaign 1
@@christiandeepe6414 "You there! Little elf girl!..." xD
This was PHENOMENAL. You can tell you put a lot of thought and energy into this, thank you so much for sharing.
This is one of the best Cr animations I’ve seen! Really hope to see more from you in the future!
That 👏🏼 flashback 👏🏼 scene 👏🏼 though 👏🏼 😍
Ooooooh shit that was so good. That montage of Jester memories omg. And that grin on Yasha's face was so unsettling it was perfect
jester's desperate "YASHA!" gets me every time
I think the only emotional shout to top it is "FIX HIM!"
I love what you've done here. The Jester/Yasha bonding montage was a great touch, and I love the design of The Laughing Hand.
Just watched the episode, and now this. It hurts. It really hurts. Absolutely amazing work, made me tear up, 12/10 would cry again
I actually started crying, watching this. Amazing work. Well done 👍 and thank you
1:01 "... You remember a coat.... Did you wear that coat? You don't think you'd wear a colourful coat.... but you must have.... There was a coat."
Omg I'm speechless this... Is so amazing and the little bits you added to it and just legit the raw emotion you put into them is legit how I saw them in that scene when they streamed it. Whew this was an intense moment. Ahhh I'm watching this animation over and over again
This is an INCREDIBLE bit of animation!! The whole emotional scale of it along with the music is too perfect! You’ve captured the emotions and mannerisms of each character and created the exact tension and loss that I certainly felt in this scene... truly amazing!! 🤩
I love how well these come out
This was truly amazing. I definitely shed tears watching this back and remembering how emotional that episode was.
Thank you again. I just love this animatic so much.
Here I was thinking the Laughing Hand couldn't get creeper but it was so COOL!
The voice lines being used in the animatic along with the music is a super unique touch and I'm sure took HOURS to edit, absolutely amazing 100/10 would watch again
THIS I'D AMAZING??? THE EMOTION AND MUSIC AND EVERYTHING, IT'S SO GOOD!!!
Friggin best I've seen so far. I'm not crying you're crying
I feel like, this was a down a path labeled “feelings!” And I was like oh yeah, sounds cathartic, feelings haha! And it was just you with a huge plank of wood with nails and barbed wire - named “FEELINGS” and ready to just knock me the fuck out.
I was a fool for not being ready to cry. That was amazing. It nearly killed me and I just wanna see it again and again. Truly chilling and beautiful.
Holy freaking smokes. That is like jaw-droppingly well done. The flash back, the story telling, the fluidness of the animation. Amazing job
Hngg wow 👏👏 Laura Bailey with how hurt you draw Jester is a instant tear combo.
This made me cry omg it was so beautiful the way you portrayed everything omg I can’t say how much I love it the different ways to show yasha like thinking back on all the good things about jester but then being taken by the mind control omg I love it so so so much
