    • @Marys_Life_64
      @Marys_Life_64 4 года назад +11

      If you do a project correctly and not skip steps then it will last for years. It's not any different than painted furniture. First clean very well and completely, then sand, then prime (pick a quality primer-read labels-ask questions), then paint (probably 2 - 4 coats & you might need to use a fine sandpaper and lightly sand in between coats), then a good quality top coat (again same procedure as the painting). This can take several days to finish. Most people want a quick couple hour fix and not do it properly. That's why they have problems afterwards. People have been painting countertops of all sorts for decades and have them last decades. People also use cutting boards, hot pads, and pay attention to taking care of their homes. Now everyone wants to use their countertops without taking care of them. That's why they get messed up so much and fast.

    • @enrica1998
      @enrica1998 4 года назад +2

      @@causeeffect7624 that was my point though. They did not say to add poly to it. It was just the paint. That will definitely chip off with regular use. But yes I agree that with poly it will be good as long as you take good care of it.

    So basically just paint it. Sheesh! I could have taught people that. If you want great countertops without spending a ton of money, here you go: Buy the colors of paint that you want touse, pick at least 4 colors, maybe 5. Buy acrylic paint, also a couple of bottles of metallic paint would be good like gold or silver. Use a sponge that's broken into pieces and just randomly dab on the colors leaving space for the other colors to be dabbed on as you go(one color at a time) Make sure you cover the entire countertop with each color randomly. After the countertops are done and completely dry (about an hour) then put at least two coats of polyurethane on them to give them a shine and to seal the paint. Wait in between the two coats, follow directions on the can for drying times. The only thing to remember is that you must use a cutting board to put the food on, I don't recommend placing food directly on the sealant. But that's a small thing, you save hundreds by doing your own countertops.

    Oh please! Nine out of ten people who want to restore their countertops by this method will mess it up. I love the way they have this lady apply to laps and then reveal the section that is already completed by a professional.
    I consider myself a perfectionist and have tried to recoat a laminate countertop on my workshop. Epic fail to my standards. The paint dries too fast and you tend to see the overlap marks or the sponge roller marks. If you want to settle for second best by following process, then fine. However, for what it would cost to have them replaced, I would simply pay the money to have it done. After all, it isn't money thrown away, but an added investment to your home. JMO

      @@xthatwhiteguyx You're supposed to use specified paint for this and you can add water, to make it less "gritty", which is what we did for my cabinets which are nice condition and not worth throwing in some land fill while student nurse here goes broke remodeling a kitchen she's not going to remain in too long. This is obviously not perfect but not everyone can afford the ideal solution, to buy new /replace and these design retailers make is such a greedy & abusive process, I avoided it on that basis alone. If you dare blink or breathe, there is an added fee, and they're not small fees. Great way to ensure you get no business. This is a plan B for people who don't have funds to remodel and that's the majority of America so you're definitely outnumbered in your opinion. This is meant to be temporary but some people love the results and say it's lasted or held up quite well. An that'd be enough for me!! I'm a having a kitchen designer coming tomorrow, to assess and offer any affordable options that doesn't involve replacing a perfectly good sink and finding a plumber. Depending on what I'm told tomorrow, I will figure out what route to take for the damaged countertops in my condo. Some people don't want to invest a whole upgrade if they're not even intending to remain in the property for very long. I'm one of those people. If a place isn't willing to do a modest upgrade, they lose and I'll have to do what I can to improve it within my abilities in order to sell it which I hope to do in a few years and hopefully have it looking a little better for the enjoy this beautiful place I'm living in. I curse death on any fool who uses counters as their cutting boards!!!!!!! Ever hear of a plate or actual cutting board!?! Any moron who does this should have to pay to replace them. An use a pot holder if you're setting anything hot down/keep it on the stove. 🙄 The stupidity & recklessness knows no bounds!!

    • @melissahouse3488
      @melissahouse3488 Год назад +1

      You'd have to buy quartz or better, for it to be considered "renovated /upgraded", new laminate counters actually aren't even considered upgrades. That's ridiculous as the costs that fall under that trap are outrageous!! New sink, hiring a plumber, that's over an extra grand right there and the hidden fees are absurd!!!! Glad to know you're so happy to pay all that, you can fund mine then!!!! Modest improvements should be considered in upping the value of your property, especially when your counters are as damaged mine are in the condo I bought and the massive, beautiful island is a different color all together, an awful dark concrete gravely looking grey, ugly!!!! Such lousy taste should be punishable in the most merciless of ways along with offenders who destroy property and have something against using a plate to cut things up!!!! I'm hoping new laminate will help my selling objective when the time comes, if it looks beautiful and was money put in. I definitely intend to market it as a renovated kitchen, I don't care if it's not granite, marble or quartz, butcher block, etc, because laminate /Formica has benefits those don't and I know people who spent on beautiful quartz only to have cracks appear straight through and didn't take long, and the companies do Anything to get out of honoring their warranty by blaming the costumer, even if you're careful. I can't be bothered so I'll go with the minimal updates, I'd never get my return on a place in this area anyways. You don't want to go all out in all locations. You'll never see that money back and provide someone else that luxury. I only believe in upgrading if I'm benefitting in some way, financially or the enjoyment at least.

    • @therealsparkman
      @therealsparkman Год назад +1

      @@melissahouse3488 One doesn't need to resort to replacing their old laminate countertops with quartz or granite to be considered 'renovated'. Laminate countertops have come a long way in looks from the traditional countertops growing up as youngsters.
      The point of my comment was that the results of this method were not all what they are cracked up to be, and if you are like me, then I would recommend another option. If money is an issue, and apparently for you it is, then fine! Go this route as a temporary option. The choice is yours.
      I realize that installing quartz or granite at thousands of dollars is not advisable if you think that you will get your money back in return when you sell. It is, however, a selling feature to those who come into a dwelling and that stands out right away. That is just my opinion.
      I realize that everyone has financial difficulties, as does many of us, myself included. That said, I will bite the bullet to make an upgrade if it's reasonable. This is in no way a reflection on what others do, and if you take issue, that's your opinion. By your rant, it sounds like you have other issues that are embedded into your retort. I'm sorry if this is true. Yes, people cut on their countertops instead of using a cutting board. Their choice. It they choose to put a hot pot on their countertop, it's their choice. I can't tell people how to live or what they should do day to day. That comes down to common sense or the lack there of.
      Again, this is merely 'my' opinion for what I would do in accordance to this particular project. Have a nice day.

      Formica IS laminate. It's just the most popular brand of laminate. Like Kleenex is tissue, but there is bath tissue, facial tissue, muscle tissue, laminate tooth covers, etc. There are many types of laminate, laminate flooring, laminate counters, even laminate glass and wall panels. Your windshield is a laminate of glass and plastic.

      Anyone who pays a professional to refinish formica is brainless. It's cheap and easy to replace. The only person who would refinish it is a homeowner who is trying to save money.

      @@kristopherhiser4967 Have you priced countertops lately? I am doing a kitchen makeover now and discount prices start at -$18 l.f. for laminate. Quartz at $22. But compare those prices to the big orange or big blue and you're are starting at $170 for a 10'. Special order sizes, off the chain.
      Then, you have to be skilled enough to join the miter edges properly, then mount onto cabinets, etc. Most homeowners are too busy to take the time
      to do this, and most don't have the tools unless they are already DYIers. So
      to pay someone who can get it done for them in one day instead of it taking them several days (without a functioning kitchen, I might add) is worth the cost.

    • @kristopherhiser4967
      @kristopherhiser4967 4 года назад

      @@beavernon5387 It costs half or less the labor to replace formica. You could do it in a few hours, tops. This method is far more labor, so at best, you would get a vastly inferior product at the same or a higher cost.

    • @beavernon5387
      @beavernon5387 4 года назад

      For those on time restraints, replacing might be better. But for those on budget and having the time, its more about participation, and having the confidence that doing it yourself will be satisfactory. Several have started businesses from watching helpful DYI videos.
      True, that method in video isn't completely described. I'm looking at StoneCoatCountertops videos for future makeovers.
      My recommendation to those out there, start small. As you gain confidence (and funds), go larger. Temporary DYI fixes within a current budget can allow for time to get/do something better later.

      Who cares!?! If people are happy, that's what matters and several RUclipsrs are and save a lot. I know the paid trolls are unleashed to spew the conditioning propaganda we must buy new and overflow our landfills and go broke for better "value". It doesn't look as good but my peace from psychological abuse of these home improvement companies is priceless and means a lot more to me than anything else including more new "stuff". It's not even considered a home upgrade unless you go all out and buy everything new, which is how they rig it. Hence so many are turning to paint.
