As a professional decorator in London i can't recommend a product enough called ESP by Owatrol, no need to sand, its a liquid which can be wiped on pretty much any non porous surface including glass which enables any paint including waterbased paints to stick to any surfaces , we use it to paint old melamine, formica kitchen's and have nothing but brilliant results 😀

Instead I got the tub and tile ended up using it for my bathroom sink bowls, and it’s incredibly beautiful no stains, and my teenage daughter love to do their makeup in the bathroom even though they have a vanity, anyway. It’s absolutely beautiful so I went and got the right one so I can do my countertops and ended up doing the bathroom floor, and wow just incredible and glossy I also did my kitchen cabinets and again wow I will do my kitchen cabinets soon hopefully. I watch a lot of diy home improvement videos and I have to say this is one of the best one's I've ever watched! Your explanation of your process, the relaxation of your tone and presentation as if you were demonstrating to one of your good friend's, was a pleasure watching.
I am serious when I say you should take this to a network to pursue a weekly show.
You are as good at this as many I see on the home improvement shows and cooking shows on their respective cable television shows.

Safety tip: When sanding it's good to wear a dust-filter mask, goggles, & gloves. A synthetic surface may have especially irritating dust. Also if you can rent an electric sander with a vacuum attached, it's faster & cleaner.

I watched your video and did my counters too! It has been over a year and a half and it is fantastic! You saved me a load of cash and tons of time! My bright yellow 70’s installed Formica top, looks brand new and a million times better in white! I also painted my yellow bathroom tile ! It is also amazing! Over a year as well. We have been really careful as some paint started to come up in the molded soap rests in the shower. I sanded and repainted. Left extra time for curing, kept fairly dry between showers and put a plastic soap holder in the molded painted holder so it doesn’t peel up again from being overly saturated. Works like a charm! I am going to paint the yellow floor tiles in guest bath. It will need extra cure time and a floor mat so it stays dry…since it is a floor. think it will be just fine! Best thing is…easy to paint over and super cheap if u have to touch up anything! Thank u soooo much!!!

I’ve seen a lot of people use peel and stick wallpaper, but to be honest, it may look good on camera, but I have a feeling it looks like wallpaper in person. I can imagine that painting looks so much better.
PS I used appliance paint to restore a refrigerator that worked great but had significant rust damage (the “advantages” of living beach front 🙄), and that appliance paint ROCKS! It made the refrigerator look like new, and it LASTED.

I tested the same epoxy product on old porcelain tile 😀 and it worked! I just tested one square to make sure cause I didn't want to do the whole area only to find out it peeled off or something. But it didn't peel off... I followed your sanding and prepping instructions and then painted one coat each for 3 days and it's now in the curing process. Sanding is a must especially on porcelain. After 3 coats it looks glossy and nice like new tile! I lightly scratched the edges with a nail to see if it comes off, but luckily the paint is still on and not peeling. As long as you let it dry enough days before using the surface, it will be fine 👍👍👍 Just wanted to share my results and thank you for this tutorial! 💛

I had to use a N95 mask when applying coats.

I just did mine and have a couple of comments. For the bathroom countertop, I used a 4" foam roller, 3 coats of paint, and it turned out OK.
For the kitchen, I first painted with a primer. After 2 coats of appliance paint, I sanded with 120 grit (bad) sandpaper (orbital sander). I should have used a much finer grit. After the 3rd coat I noticed what looked like coffee cup stains. They were actually swirls from the sander. I hand sanded with 250 grit until it appeared from all angles I had removed the swirls. There was also an area that had small holes, almost like someone had taken a fork and jabbed it into the countertop several times. I filled the holes with wood filler and sanded down. Then I painted a 4th coat using a 9" roller.
Overall, the finish is excellent, much better than the bathroom countertop. However, the swirls are still barely visible from a certain angle. If you weren't looking for them you would never see them. I might sand that area down again and add another coat of paint. I haven't decided yet.
Prep is key. Use a fine grit sandpaper to get rid of any imperfections. Even with a bright light, some imperfections may not show up until the epoxy paint dries. The paint is cheap, be willing to add another coat if that what it takes.

I have found that the preparation is vital, drop cloths and mask off areas you do not want paint on (I prefer frog tape) sand with lowest number first to highest number last (80, 120, 240), also run your hands over the surface after it is cleaned off of all dust and check for smoothness, and allow enough curing time before you start to use the area. Countertops about 72 hours in a well ventilated room. Dampness allow another 24 hours drying time. I know it seems like a long time but paint needs to cure or harden and you can't rush it. Your countertops look beautiful. You can fix the oops areas easily with a light sanding (240 grit) and another coat of paint. 👍 👍 👍

Im also going to add white to the epoxy, a little gray paint with a feather for the marble affect, and use a putty for the seam you tried to cover then sand very good. I saw a video with a guy using a putty to fill in scratches, dents, and seams. He then sanded them down once it was sanded and painted you couldn't see ANYTHING! Yes, I also have a green laminate counter top that has a seam pucker - my solution is to save up for a new laminate countertop in a warm wood tone (stone is cold to lean on & I hate stone for that reason) - the new countertop will be complimented by a sink, adjustable tap (faucet in your part of the world) and new induction cooktop to replace the 90's electric hotplate . I'm sold on induction (currently using a mini IKEA version, it's versatile easy to clean & cooks like a dream).
Trades people will be called in to professionally install (under supervision because when a problem presents you need to be there). So, patience is the key.

The epoxy worktop makeovers on RUclips look wonderful, but yours is much easier to achieve, not to mention cheaper. I'm going to try it but I'll see if I can find a more durable non chip topcoat to use.

For the sharpie mark, go over it with a dry erase marker then open off.

I had the exact same color laminate in a previous house. Good job on changing the color!

Did something similar to a SHOWER! Old, yellowed showe stall plastic...SPARKLING white now! Used a roller--REMEMVER TO DE-LINT IT! Error: should have made certain (by sanding) soap holder areas were 100% free of soap because it's prelibg there now 2 years later. But I would so do it again!

Also wanted to say you might see little bubbles as you roll the paint on but don’t panic they literally all go away.
