As a builder, one thing I always did when installing those particle board countertops was after cutting out for the sink and checking it for size, I would slightly sand over the edges of the cut to kill the sharp edge and put a couple of coats of Kilz2 to seal the raw particle board. I can't tell you how many times I have replaced those kinds of countertops where water got under the sink edge and swelled up and rotted the raw particle board.
Thanks for the tip. I actually installed a formica countertop last week. I took your advice and sealed the sink cutout but I also sealed the front under side edge of the countertop. I just used some clear water based Polly that I had in the van. I think this is a great tip and appreciate you sharing.
@@handylandlord You are very welcome! Another thing along those lines is cabinet floor rot, most renters, even the good ones are reluctant to tell you about small leaks or other problems with the bathroom and kitchen cabinets for fear you might blame them for the problem, so, the first time I see some swelling or rot in the cabinet floor install a piece of 1/4" plywood that has been well sealed and painted and caulk it in the edges and corners. This takes way longer to cause damage as the water just sits there and it is more likely that the renter will alert you to it. I always gave them lots of positive reinforcement when they reported a problem, it really saves me in the long run. Good luck!
From a guy who has building maintenance experience and a landlord. On the toilet zep acidic toilet bowl cleaner is the best. It made a toilet that hasn't been cleaned for 10+ year's look like new. Mildew, calcium buildup you name it GONE.

If you put your roller in a Walmart bag and place in fridge it won't get dry. I can walk away a week later come back and my roller will be fresh. Even with brushes.

Thank you for posting this. I just bought a house and the previous owners tiled and grouted the kitchen countertops. I pulled off the tile and need to sand the remaining grout off but I'm glad I found this video as this is what I'm going to do.
I did the same thing a few years ago. My stepmom was selling the house so we recovered the countertops with formica. The countertops had square corners and no backsplash so it made laying new formica possible. Good luck on your project.
Great tutorial, easy to follow, and I like that you removed the caulk before you painted, not many channels do that and it makes a huge difference instead of paint on the caulk making the edges look messy. Thanks for the share, new sub.
@@believeinjesus8862 I have no idea why my husband removed our sink but somehow he cracked the Formica. Our counter looks awful. I think I'll try this until we can afford a remodel. At least this is something I can do myself 😃 Great video!
Ive had mixed reviews on various rust-olem products over the years. But the counter top paint I was really surprised about. I had a worn out coffee table that has a lift top so you can do projects or eat at the couch. Gave it a good sanding and painted it with this stuff. It has lasted longer than the original stained and sealed finish.
My landlord would not replace our original 1960’s banana yellow countertops so I used this product to refresh the kitchen. It’s absolutely a suitable solution if replacement is not an option. I used foam rollers and had good results. The fumes are absolutely a real concern. I found keeping the lid on the can helped reduce the odor greatly. If possible, do 3-4 coats with several hours of drying in between. A week later I sanded it with about 320 grit sandpaper (auto body/glass grade). Overall I’m happy with what I got.
Interesting, he said do it within an hour or you have to wait 24 hours, so you found it better to wait a few hours in between? After you use the high 320 grit sandpaper later, do you go over it with anything else?
@@tinainnca I was painting an adjacent room and coating the countertops over a long weekend so I did 3 complete coats over a 12-14 hour period. I let it dry overnight with heavy ventilation and did touch ups the next morning. I let it dry for 2-3 days before putting anything on the surface. To be fair, it’s a more delicate product than I hoped, but better than I expected. Great job! And it's fantastic to see that you DIDN'T skimp out and used new brushes and rollers! They're pretty cheap and that's the best way to go, coming from a painter. I've painted for some cheap landlords, and they lose their ever loving mind if you spend more than $12 for materials!! It's ridiculous. You can spend a couple of extra bucks, as you did, and create something great from nothing! To me? If a lot more of these budget improvements were done to trailers and lower-end apartments it might keep rental prices under control. No one would want to rent a place with a bathroom like it was before. But the after was not fancy but it looks clean and neat and might sway rental customers.
My experience-it does not have the durability for high use/ high abrasion areas like around the sink or cutting board/food prep areas. That being said, it’s ideal for a half bathroom, a countertop in a laundry room or where appliances sit. It has a smooth, level finish when applied properly in several coats. Ultimately it’s a great product for the right application or could serve well to refresh outdated countertops to make a home more attractive to sell. It’s not a permanent solution to surfaces that are really past their reasonable life or get regular daily use.
Why would you need to remodel after what you just did? It looks nice. I need to do two vanity tops soon in my home and your video made it look super easy. Will it not last?
That looks great and it looks like this paint works. They must have come out with a better product. Years ago I tried to paint my formica kitchen counter. I believe the guy sold me a primer and a special paint. Unfortunately it started chipping. The product did not go on as smoothly as yours.
The directions only call for primer if painting over wood. So far I haven’t seen any adhesion issues on any of the countertops I’ve painted. Only misuse like using the countertop as a cutting board. Haha Good luck on your project. If you are painting a kitchen I like to clean with denatured alcohol to remove grease.
The end result looks great! Just wondering how durable the new finish is. Has anyone done this 3 or more years ago? If so, did it chip or scratch? Thanks
I would recommend sanding it down with a random orbital sander to remove blemish’s then paint it again. Sorry I’ve never tried to remove the paint completely. Good luck on your project.
I've done many countertops with this product for our rental properties. Product is very forgiving but stinky. I have never needed to sand the countertop, just wipe it down with denatured alcohol to degrease. Also a regular brush is fine as the product self- levels.
Hi. Can you recommend an epoxy that is painted on? I thought about doing a poor but it is incredibly messy. I would greatly appreciate your recommendation. Thank you so much.
Teach me your way!!! Lol I’m poor my mobile home is old but it all we could afford soooo I wanna diy it. I’m goooood when I know what I’m doing this this I have to learn.
I wanted to start this same project, but the can said to extinguish pilot lights. It is winter and the furnace is in the same level (basement) as the bathroom although two doors separate them. Did you worry about that?
Love it . Do you have a light gray undercoat where you can apply a white marble spray? I have a very small kitchen with a rounded back splash and want to keep everything light colored.

Wow! Great job guys! Want to come do mine? Lol😂 The labor is just a lot, but worth it😊
Can you use that paint on a kitchen counter? And if so, how does it hold up?
Beautiful! What's the color again?
The color is putty. Several colors available.
what about the broken tiles? Or can u paint them i want to paint my top but then the tiles wont match
Thank you! Nice, clear step by step instructions!
How durable is it? Does it scratch easily? Looks great btw! Good job!
Can you add a sealant for more durability? I noticed a couple of comments saying it lasted 5 and 11 years on kitchen counter tops.
Why would you need to remodel after what you just did? It looks nice. I need to do two vanity tops soon in my home and your video made it look super easy. Will it not last?
Excellent video.
Thanks for sharing.
That looks great and it looks like this paint works. They must have come out with a better product. Years ago I tried to paint my formica kitchen counter. I believe the guy sold me a primer and a special paint. Unfortunately it started chipping. The product did not go on as smoothly as yours.
That’s a great idea - nice demo and finish for just paint!!
Wonder about the particles in air after sanding is it dangerous maybe a mask?
I have a cultured marble bathroom counter with an integrated sink. Can the sink also be painted, will it hold up to standing water?
Why didn’t you prime before it? Just curious, about to do this to my parents and I was going to prime it after sanding and cleaning.
@@handylandlord I want to put it on my vinyl tiles on kitchen counter top would I need to top coat?? is it alright around my cooker????
wow what a difference can you use on fiberglass
Not sure if you can use on fiberglass. Are u talking about a fiberglass shower surround?
@@handylandlord no I think my bathroom has a counter and sink formed as one I'm only guessing that it's faberglass
Looks great Handy! I always wanted to see how this product looks when applied. Nice!
The end result looks great! Just wondering how durable the new finish is. Has anyone done this 3 or more years ago? If so, did it chip or scratch? Thanks
How do you take this off if you need to? I tried and had some problems... need to start over!
I would recommend sanding it down with a random orbital sander to remove blemish’s then paint it again. Sorry I’ve never tried to remove the paint completely. Good luck on your project.
Man what a difference!!
A little better than the old blue countertop. Haha
Looks Alot Better!-Thanks for Sharing
How well does it hold up?
I've done many countertops with this product for our rental properties. Product is very forgiving but stinky. I have never needed to sand the countertop, just wipe it down with denatured alcohol to degrease. Also a regular brush is fine as the product self- levels.
Nice ... love the color.
If I paint my kitchen counter tops
Will the grease mess up the paint
And what do use to clean it
A coat or 2 of tabletop epoxy would help it last longer and give it a higher-end look. No need to buy those epoxy countertop kits they sell either.
Thanks for the tip. Is there a certain product you have used?

Hi. Can you recommend an epoxy that is painted on? I thought about doing a poor but it is incredibly messy. I would greatly appreciate your recommendation. Thank you so much.
@IAmShaniNicloe where do you get it from....?
Teach me your way!!! Lol I’m poor my mobile home is old but it all we could afford soooo I wanna diy it. I’m goooood when I know what I’m doing this this I have to learn.
Very nice! Wish my property managed would let us update the counter tops.
Would you do a different coat of something protective?
No I did not do a top coat. It's still holding up

I wanted to start this same project, but the can said to extinguish pilot lights. It is winter and the furnace is in the same level (basement) as the bathroom although two doors separate them. Did you worry about that?
Looks Really Nice 👍 👍👍. Thank You for sharing 😁
Thanks. The product held up better than expected imo
Love it . Do you have a light gray undercoat where you can apply a white marble spray? I have a very small kitchen with a rounded back splash and want to keep everything light colored.
Looks nice! How bout a frame on the mirror ? 😊
Property is rented. Great idea. Will keep that in mind for future projects.
