- #hoonigan #donutmedia #cars Today we're talking about their tough decision to leave Donut and whats next. Welcome to BigTime! More and more creators are leaving what may seem like the dream job pursue creating for themselves. Donut Media stars Jeremiah and Jobe have announced they have left to start their own channel.
Check out the BigTime channel: • Why We’re Leaving Donu...
In the creation of this video, I have incorporated clips from various sources to serve as B-roll footage. These clips are used under the principles of fair use for the purpose of commentary, criticism, education, and transformative use. The content is not used with the intention of infringing upon the original creators' copyright, but rather to enhance the value of the final work and provide a richer viewing experience.

If James leaves too, they might as well turn the lights off on the channel.
i kinda hope he does and joins bigtime
James is gone, he doesn’t follow donut on instagram, he is no longer in any videos. It’s just matter of time until the notice drops out.
James isn't even that active anymore on donut it's mostly Nolan he's gonna leave it's only a matter of time but I think he's probably locked in some sort of contract
Edit: James has completely went silent on social media and changed his pfp on ig to just a green background and doesn't follow donut anymore.
James has shown a very hateful and woke side of himself. If he joins Bigtime he will ruin the channel.
@@jacoblarsen4633 why you said he’s being hateful?
I really noticed donut getting shittier when bumper 2 bumper, and up to speed just disappeared
and wheelhouse too 😢(the early ones were better)
@@drivingforalivinx1 Oh man, Wheelhouse was a good one.
That explains why I never saw that anymore
I speak Spanish, English is not my first language but man, you choose to speak with the truth and I do speak that one
Man I miss Bart yo
No good thing goes ungroped by the hands of conceited, faceless executives. Seems like every creative space is poisoned by them.
You are correct. It seems RUclips is being taken over by large express-less corporations
Wrong. Selling to the greedy execs is the one-big once-in-a-lifetime payout in today's gig economy.
I can't fault anyone for taking the bag, it doesn't mean the channel isn't getting worse.
That’s just real life guy. Realizing that everybody eventually sells out is just part of growing up. You and I are no exception to this either. Virtue and nativity are for kids.
@OverloadIndia agreed. Not sure why more people don't see this. Blame the sellout.
donut has literally went from reviewing cars, to building them, to now selling them. They just released the most souless promotion for this chinese ev, donut is dead
Yeah, freaking soulless for sure!!
really ? lol sad but not surprised I'm subscribed to an automobile paper mag it's 100 years old and all they promote now are chinese evs or 100'000$ cars the worst is that their chiense ev articles are full of lies with made up range and power and promoting cars you can see burn on youtube almost daily BYD etc...
I get that. But the content we do enjoy needs to get paid for by someone. Sponsors are a given necessity
@@larryhouse3776 Miss the days where we didn’t had these sponsors stuff on YouTuBe.
Exactly what I thought Nolan looked like he was forced to make it I couldn’t finish watching it , felt like a whole advertisement
I sort of lost my interest for Donut after they stopped doing those educational, documentaries styled videos. I loved to watch them as it made me learn more about cars, and a brand’s history (Uptospeed)
They also discontinued wheelhouse too 😢
What was your favorite series?
@@LukesCarTalk pretty much wheelhouse and uptospeed.
One of the biggest mistakes they did. I feel the way. I kept holding on having my hopes that the old Donut would return. Now it's too late.
@@LukesCarTalki miss science garage, bart has been gone almost 5 years now
Science Garage is what i really missed 😢
im excited for them, these two were the main reason i watched donut.
Right! Money put is the main reason I got a miata in the first place.
Really? they’re literally the most uninspired and uninteresting people at Donut. Which is really saying a lot. Donut is so boring in general
Who’s the best in your opinion
Not what it’s about. Donut is the most Lethargic uninspiring Car channel out there which is why they’re not making Money
@@LukesCarTalk You’re missing the fact that they were most influencing in making Donut sHiT than they’re taking any credit for. It’s literally their fault which is why their content is gonna suck balls as well.
any freaking RUclips channel falls apart when the personalities realize they can just leave and do their own thing
And get a big raise
Private equity, killing everything nice as long as it’s existed.
I watched another video by someone who was a behind-the scenes content creator at Donut. He said it's not publicly known yet but half the original content creators have already left Donut and probably more will leave. He cited corporate managers coming in, sucking up money for their own salaries while reducing the salaries of the creators who made the channel a success, and then dictating what creators can and can't produce. He wanted to name who had left but was advised by his attorney not to. But I'm sure we'll be seeing some videos in the next week revealing who has left.
this is worldwide and in every industry middle management is out of control, a manager hired a guy who had zero work he should not have been hired, he invented himself some work and now years later they hired assistants for him to do his non important invented work so they're now paying 3 salaries to do nothing
I miss Up to Speed and Science Garage
What was your favorite series?
That upside down donut logo shirt Jeremiah is wearing, is such a slap in the face, and friggin sweet at the same time.
That's the Australian shirt from their down under trip
Rule #1 - just dont sell the company to some money-oriented pricks.
Smosh is a good example of making that same mistake lol.
@@chillyman7340what is interesting though is how Smosh freakin saved themselves by buying it back last year. They've been so good since and are probably at an all-time high in quality
Not surprised especially when they got rid of half the good shows that people actually wanted to have stick around
The video donut released after they announced their leave is the cherry on top
RUclips was like the early days of Phone games: Weird. Original. Insightful. Niche. And then all the phone game companies and all the RUclips channels got bought out by big corporations and now everything is starting to be the same bland filler. I really hope RUclips doesn’t just become big dumb media companies trying to out-copy each other. But, that may be the destiny of all new media.
It already happened long ago, all they care about is money now, the same thing happened in gaming.
Gotta love corporate greed. Provides big money to do crazy stuff yet they’re in control. Blessings towards Jeremiah and Zach journey on their channel already subscribed to their channel 🙏🏿
Corporate greed? Hardly. Blame the sellouts.
I don recall Jobe saying he didn’t like putting expensive engines in cheap cars at all
He doen't say that. He say that is not the only thing he wanna do...
@@bariafelipe1 I watched the whole thing twice and I’m pretty sure he was happy with the buildings cars aspect of donut he just wanted to do more and have more control
The fans were getting tired of it. It's basically clickbait.
Yeah, anyone with ENOUGH MONEY can put whatever engine in whatever car. But it's not really attainable, atleast not financially, for alot of people.
The reason they made those videos was they could add drama, get more views with a cool title, and spend a shit load of money. The shows like money pit for actual enthusiasts are what people can realistically do for themselves amd enjoy watching. Jobe made money pit and did alot of work and videos to make a miata a fun little car. It was never supposed to be about how many different brand new crate engines we can jam into a 350Z
@@Rltvader1 that’s what hi lo was about… did you even watch it? Lo car was for the attainable audience and hi was for the unrealistic aspect, sorry but I don’t get on RUclips looking to watch attainable builds, that’s why Westin Chaplin is getting amazing views rn bc he does crazy shit, Cleetus McFarland builds crazy race cars, donut caters to both audiences and that’s not a problem AT ALL, besides crate engines are attainable or they would have no business as people wouldn’t buy them, LS’s in general are very attainable performance engines, the most attainable in fact, clearly you’ve never tried looking. Jobe clearly wants to work on his own content and not for a company anymore don’t make this about engine swapping
My favourite car video is the Donut Lewis Hamilton video, where James gets so emotional, and its that authenticity that they are getting rid of with trying to monetise art and culture.
Biggest thing: They were WRITING even more than they were acting in. Huge point… it was their creativity that helped make Donut successful then when they “sold out” they were not only not compensated as co owners but their creativity was being squashed. Youd think they would have learned from Hoonigan, Car Throttle, et al however $$$ talks and sounds like Pumphrey was all ears.
Thanks for the comment. You are spot on and I’m looking forward to their new channel. What kind of content do you want to see them make first
Pumphrey doesn't own Donut
bro, Pumphrey was a chump, he was just there for his on-camera personality. He never was owner in any way of Donut
@@MrPrajiturawhy is he referred to so consistently as the owner ?
@@paulvo7955 because people have no fking clue, and thought Donut was this small time youtube channel created by a couple of buddies, when in fact it was created by 2 dudes that had nothing to do with the youtube stuff
Honestly, I had no idea that Donut was sold off back in 21! But looking back now, I could definitely see the change and quality of videos! Such a shame, but looking forward to the new creative content of Big Time! If James leaves, it’s all done!
Whenever a bigger business buys a smaller one within the creative sphere the clock starts counting down.
Love the past donut contents with humble and pure build and talk about something automotive world related (science garage, up to speed, bumper 2 bumper), not just cheap talk on videos and wasting money on something we don't want or expensive shits that rationally barely reachable.
well, we all know what happened to Top Gear
To fair the brand has to make money some how, creativity is good but if it's not making money then something needs to change. The problem with any content creation lead brand is that, eventually it has to turn into a fully fledge business at some point which in many cases leads to things falling apart.
It makes a lot of sense, as a YT creator with a relatively small team, that can be just the one creator and sometimes an editor, you have a lot of freedom freedom, which is good, but once you are known, your earnings multiply bastly in a small team setup over any offering any content company can make you, and that is the breaking point for most people. I fully support people pushing for their vision of content to be amde and published and to be properly compensated for it.
This is true. Thanks for sharing a different point of view
is it just me of did hoonigan kinda die with ken?
Sadly
The same fate of youtube channels like CarThrottle, WTF1 etc. It's a common pattern now emerging in the RUclips creator world. Pointless for these companies investing into these channels and ruining the original vibe that made them this successful. I hope the best for these content creators freed from the shackles of corporate greed.
This is what needs to happen, these investment groups buy these popular channels and try to turn them into top-heavy content factories while treating the original hosts like they're expendable -- funny thing is, the hosts often leave and start a channel they own while taking the personal brand they've built up with them. Big Time already has ~1mil subs.
We saw it with Smosh, with TKOR, and countless other channels. It won't be the last time. Follow the talent, not the brand.
2 videos in one day 🔥
I stopped watching after James got sick, and they brought in new ppl. I still watch all the old videos.
It happens in every industry. Small guys make big and channel, store, service gets all consumed with money and everyone and everything suffers. Especially the fans.
Jeremy brought life to donut media. Especially when he was new.
Wow dude, real original 😂 Plagiarized nearly word for word for word. Classic case of copying someone else’s homework.
Thanks for the feedback!
I gave them credit in the description.
Having the stradmans old cameraman dissing you for plagiarism is absolutely nuts (also luke, you needa post more often bro)
Thanks for the back up 😭
@@TonyWitThaTommy This guy straight up ripped off our podcast word for word.
investors often times don't know what they're doing and just milk the shit out of already accomplished small companies
A problem with this is when a youtube channel gets successful, people want more content, and at some point when the channel is growing, it gets harder to produce a lot of content every week. Then you need a bigger team to handle the demand and generate more revenue to pay the bigger team, and it's a vicious circle.
They might as well turn the lights off now, James can’t carry the channel by himself
Thought I was imagining things when I noticed Jobe and Jeremy weren't enjoying some of their videos.
Definitely turned into a "Mr. Beast" type video title/subject matter when they went to "I ruined a $1.2 Million Camper" or "We test drove the most expensive and cheapest XXX Vehicle" just to get more clicks instead of doing content that was different than other typical car review channels.
"Hoonigan started with Ken Block and Scotto" -- Proceeds to show a photo of Scotto and Brad. ...
I remember when I first saw this channel and it was talking about how different car parts work than it turned into the high low series money pit if you fix this car you buy it. Now it’s 90% reaction content.
It's the same with RUclips channels, musicians and everything. When they're small they improvise and get creative which leads to good content.
As soon as they grow and get known, they start turning to the corporate side of things.
Donut was like a car show for young kids that didn’t have a car yet. It just turned into a history show on coke yelling moo power way too much. It’s what happened when business owners only see views and money and don’t know anything about cars or the community around the gear heads.
Kinda sad. The crew at donut has always been super chill and fascinating. Hopefully we’ll see James, Justin, Nolan, and jimmy making some appearances in other places. Sounds like they’d do well with the freedoms.
i called it two months ago when they showed off danny in the staff drag race, she also worked at motortrend and roadkill... hmmmmm
edit: AND HOONIGAN
Your smart for that one!
$60,000 a year is honestly insulting especially when you think of the hard work these 2 dedicated to their roles...
I definitley unsubbed from donut media... they are nothing worth watching without these two on the channel anyway
You know it's over when they start pushing reaction videos and a podcast.
That's what happens when half your creative team leaves.
I've been following Donut since 500k subs. They changed over the years, but once the buyout happened, it all went downhill. We had already lost Science Garage when Bart left, and Up to Speed is what started the channel. (subs wise, not existence wise) once it went on hiatus, and the buyout took place, we saw the energy plummet, it wasn't all bad, but it was the start of the dark ages. and now here we are. with Bart, Aaron, Jerry, Zach, and now Likely James (based on his cryptic insta posts that have since been deleted) being gone from Donut. Nolan is the only real OG left and I remember when he was the new guy. I hate to see the channel fall so far, I just hope that everyone gets out and starts their own thing and has a good time.
This program took a dive when they started their project cars episodes
and the Fitment Industries guys too! i'm here for it, more power to these creators, let them make their own content i can't wait to see what they come up with.
Donut is done.. corporate ruined it, good job
Why is no one talking about how wild how many subscribers big time has off the bat. The support is definitely there I'm glad to say I'm jot worried for them at all.
So long as the hosts get back together to do what they used to, they can revive their careers and show under a different brand. This sort of thing happens a lot,
as part of the underground, i really noticed the shift a long while ago when they slowly stopped showing support for the users who supported them. at the begining they did a lot with the donut undervround members, now they barely acknowledge we exist and yet a lot of us still pay monthly to support them. not sure why were no different than the non paying users
Your money is going to the investors not the creatives lol
@@stellviahohenheim that was obvious from the get go but at first the perks outweighed that. now its not the case.
Still props to Donut for letting them announce the channel on a donut video
Seeing as James unfollowed Donut on Insta, I think his departure is gonna be announced soon. At that point just shut it down.
I could never deal with that one dude on donut. Far too cringy. I never watch it and there are far better car centric pages on RUclips
I wondered why they disappeared :( sad as I mentioned on your follow up video this has been going on for decades in journalism, brand gets bought become some political mercantile thing unrelated to it's origin then disappears, unless they were "owned" from the beginning they sold out....and found out
Jobe*!!! That's his last name Jobe. Otherwise it's Zach
I say jobe in the recording but it sounds like joe. Oops
@@LukesCarTalkyou also said Jeremy a couple of times. His name is Jeremiah.
What irks me the most is that they’re now promoting cheap, mediocre, crap china cars.
Bro they are at almost 1 million subs in less than a week. That’s got to be some sort of a record that’s crazy
No, they're not the 'two most popular stars' ...they were the sidekicks if anything.
Ah great video about Jeremy and Joe, they look kinda like Jeremiah and Zach
Lol!
This happened with Car Throttle in the UK too.
What a shame. I remember around 2018-2019 when I discovered these guys, my dad and I would watch and be entertained by these guys because they were a breath of fresh air. They really showed their passion and knowledge for cars and it helped get me deeper into cars. But recently, these guys are getting more and more cookie cutter, almost like it has a clickbait thumbnail and almost like a weird reality show with cars. Sad these guys were part of my childhood because of their passion and niche.
I'm not sure if I just don't like their style, but I find their videos quite insufferable. It's normally the same guy making cringe-worthy jokes (who thinks he's hilarious), with the video taking multiple minutes to get to the point. Can't really watch them, if I'm honest.
I think James also left . He’s been missing from the podcast and content
You know now that I think about it your right. What do you think is next for him?
@@LukesCarTalk honestly no idea he’s been quiet on social media. My bet is he’s going back to acting , since he didn’t join these guys on the new channel
@rotttttttttttten acting? I never knew that
If this is true they only really have Nolan left & Justin became a member at the worst time lol
@@LukesCarTalk well yes, google him and he's actually ... an actor
Did you steal this script borderline word for word from the Utah boys?
Donut was the car channel that just about anyone could enjoy and learn from and they were a gateway to cars for lots of people, but now they have become Buzzfeed for cars with weak content. Temu product reviews and shameless product plugs non stop gets boring real quick. I pretty much stopped watching Donut on a regular basis in late 2021/early 2022 when the content quality started to drop and it looks like I'm not alone
I say they're one of the top 4 in donut media, cant forget James and Nolan. If they leave too then that'll be it for donut in my opinion
I remember watching Science Garage. I always enjoyed watching that, the explanations were amazing, easy to understand, with jokes slapped into the video here and there.
It's still up I believe, so give it a watch.
I miss the host, I think his name was Bart, he left because he became a dad so it was needed for him to do that.
I'd say their top 3 best series they had going were Science Garage, Up to Speed and Bumper 2 Bumper. Hi Low was also cool to watch, you could learn from the mistakes they did, for example with the plastidip. But I didn't watch the episodes after the 350Zs. I'll might watch the Subaru ones, but other than that, they feel like they lost their way. The thing that made then unique and worth watching.
His name is Zach; Jobe is his last name.
The Bureaucracy ruins everything it touches
that explains why their content changed. and I rarely watch their vids anymore.
Jeremiah and Jobe aren’t the main talent. They are up there for sure, but James and Nolan are the main stars in my mind.
Sad to see Jobe go, but Jeremiah isn’t my favorite. Still going to be watching Big Time though!
upto speed on donut
Looks like James is about to announce something today on instagram.
I will only watch Big Time from now on. Been done with Donut for 3 years now
Fun fact, Scotty Kilmer threw some shade in one of his video😂
Ill have to check that out. Thanks
Corporations all over america are only interested in maxing profits, kind of a systemic issue, happened to be everywhere and everyone is unhappy...
No offense but James Pumphrey is the least car person, but has been the most entertaining to general audience. to be fair he is funny but him talking about the AE86 and other stuff is just insufferable. you know he is reading on a script
Why don’t you team up with others that have left Donut and create a new Donut where all profits are shared based on profit per video?
once james justin and nolan bounce donut will still have good ol jimmy lol
Lol
So is this the og donut employees fault for being greedy and selling out?
This is just Hoonigan and Fitment Industries all over again
So who was it at Donut that sold it to the suits?
Going to big time !
It sucks that Jeremiah and Jobe are attached to one another. I love Jer, but Jobe has always rubbed me the wrong way. Seems like a total chotch to be honest.
Smh, maybe they could have done both the larger audience stuff And smaller 240 stuff like mentioned.
Only one can hope
First the Uk boys from Carthrotle, then Hoonigan and now Donut... :( PLZ gears and gasoline stay strong.
1:51
Old Donut Media and New Donut Media.
If James joins bigtime, all will be right with the world again. I still want hrsprs and pop up up and down headlights...
Personally I don’t much difference in donut James hadn’t been doing much around there anyway I think it’s a mistake to write off the new donut. Big time guys were due to leave it’s a business were you leave what you can to start doing your own thing. Can’t blame the founders for cashing out either. I just know the guys that started donut and the guys the help build it up would just hate to see what they built collapse and go on the scrap heap… give the new guys a chance.
Great video Luke. I knew something wasn't right with the latest video "Bad time to be EV salesman". Cheap anti-EV clickbait.
Thanks!
Can you get their names correct? Jeremiah and Jobe. Not Jeremy and Joe
I will say zach next time
same with digitalrev for sure. the creative people left
Using James “Tuff Horse” as clickbait 😢
Well good for ‘Jeremy’ and ‘Joe’
I haven’t seen James in their videos for a while
its the corporations. they ruin things
Why haven’t we seen James
First Star Wars, now Donut. F
