the view counts disagree with you buddy, sorry it's the truth.
You two are the biggest reason I kept watching Donut after "Up to Speed" stopped.
I loved tech kitchen or whatever
Oh, science garage actually
I really liked up to speed, I didn’t realize that it went away and that I missed it
Science garage and Up to speed CARRIED that channel.
Up to speed did not just stop abruptly, it got too "memy" imho. The later episodes are just full of jokes and miss a lot of key information, only scratching the surface level.
You guys just started this channel, have 1 video and ALREADY have 865k subs. This speaks volumes to how much people love you guys and are looking forward to your next chapter.
this is the comment I was looking for
its been 3 hours and hes gained 20k wtf
It’s fake
If the marketing guy is involved. Well played!
900k 6hours later Sheeeeeeeeeeeesh
One of the reasons I haven't been watching Donut that much is because it stopped feeling like a group of guys having fun in a garage and started feeling like a business automotive YT channel. I won't say the soul was lost, but it had changed.
I’m right there with ya
most the soul was gone compared to day 1
It started to feel like Mr. Beast but for cars. I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed the dip in quality at Donut.
same with doug demuro
It is time… let’s go boys!!
Would love to see a MCM-BigTime crossover video!
✌🏻
Hell yeah MCM
MCM4LYF
MCM and Big time maybe? 4 boys one car or something idk
First reaction : abject horror.
Second reaction: Thank God I'm not the only one who noticed that Donut has become trend chasing clickbait corporate nonsense.
Its sad you can tell the guys there like James and Nolan are not happy with it either, but they no longer control what content is made.
On the one hand yah im sad what the channel turned into... on the other hand im feeling abject relief that this wasn't due to someone didling kids or assaulting someone or some other messed up shit...
It's been that way since they first hit the viral circuit, did they get worse?
Donut stuff is so overproduced. Music is wild, foley is way too much, cuts every second - just simmer down. They hit their stride about a year ago and now it’s nonsense
@@iandesoucey9369 it was headed that way slightly but it REALLY got crazy after that first Nissan ad. That's what started multiple tiers of advertisements where you could pay to not have the yellow bar at the bottom. It became a lot less about the community and more about grabbing a new audience you don't have to care about every video.
Reading between the lines, its pretty clear that after Donut got bought, all the suits were interested in was "what's going to get us the most views?" (IE, what's going to make us the most money?) While the creative team that made Donut so successful to begin with was ignored in favor of more "mainstream" clickbaity videos.
I agree with your statement. There is a lot of risk avoidant mentality going on right now in all the industries I know of. What made money last year is what the leadership at Donut focuses on, instead of experimenting with new and different content. I think that's why J&J left Donut.
@@SteveWeltmanit's one reason I'm following more smaller accounts. I'm more into the off road side of car culture, and the videos from smaller creators doing cool shit are way more fun than "reActiNg tO cHiNesE caR pRodUct fAiLurEs!"
Great words
"They (sales and marketing people) end up running the company. And the product people get driven out of the decision making forums. And the company forgets what it means to make great products." - Steve Jobs 1995
Money Pit was not just one of the best things Donut did, it was one of the best things on RUclips. VERY few channels were doing anything with that level of planning and production value etc.
"I was a comedian working at an engineering company" is the most Workaholics lore ive ever heard lmao
gottabefresh
I usually experience the opposite.
It's common out here. I'm a musician moonlighting as an engineer
Fahim anwar was also an engineer for boeing.

Long story short: Wealthy people bought Donut, and now their money first mentality has ruined it all.

I completely agree with you guys. I thought "Real mechanic stuff" was going to be opening a window and letting fresh air coming in, but in fact, is the equivalent to closing the window and firing up the stove. I hope you bring legends like Bob Hall, giving him the time to talk and elaborate. Such amount of knowledge cannot be wasted doing reaction videos.
The fact that Jeremiah and Jobe are even in a position to leave Donut and be this close to a million subscribers already shows just how much talent and influence they have. It's obvious that Donut has settled into reaction content and partnerships with other companies, and that's okay, too. After everything they've made over the years, they earned it all. I hope James is able to retire comfortably, and it's no wonder why Jeremiah and Jobe stuck around as long as they did.
I can't wait to start supporting you guys, buying merch and viewing content. I rep the Donut hats I've bought every time I go out, and if your merch is the same quality, I'll be buying it, too. I got my buddy in Canada into Donut, and he's the one who told me about Bigtime. We'll both be tuning into your channel, and we'll still support Donut. I have such a backlog of videos to get through, but it's some of the best, most infectious stuff I've seen on RUclips. Godspeed!
Donut slowly went from a channel about car and racing history, car science and car builds to a channel about testing cheap products and reacting to other videos every week. Hope you guys can really take it back to the OG concepts with this channel.
I pray for it.
I mean it was pretty obvious donut was a dork that didn't know shit about cars. Since day 1 I knew all these other guys carried the show, he just hired the right people while not knowing what was going on with his own youtube channel.

The entire reason I fell in love with Donut was because of Money Pit an B2B, I loved the HiLow series too but Donut changed and i think alot of us realized it with the both of you. Very excited to follow this channels growth!
As someone who likes working in admin, I am still frustrated by how a lot of people, SPECIALLY admin types, seem to forget that the job of admins and managers shouldn't be to boss people around, but to take off the busy work so that the actual operatives can do what they're good at.
I love nothing more than just trying to make things easy or automate tasks so that the people who actually make the business run can, you know, make the business run.
The RUclips algorithm boosted you. This was at the TOP of my page.
You guys are going to kill it. Love you all!

As an Englishman, an idiot, and a very part time donut viewer. It took me a VERY long time to realise you weren’t both the same person.
You're not alone and you're not an idiot
Not alone and I realize they don't look the same.
You’ve been fooled. They are the same person and this is tricks with mirrors and camera hacks.

Despite them like looking different they seem similar even their presentations. I always thought they were the same person lol.
Garage builds and motorcycle stuff. LETS GOOO. I’m so happy you two started this channel. I’ll be a viewer as long as you keep this mindset. BIG TIME
Given that y'all have almost made it to a million subs in less than a week, I'd say there's a lot of us that agree with your creative direction.
The moment Donut sold equity to an ‘investment group’ sealed its fate. Random suits looking at Excel spreadsheets started pushing for cashflow metrics and ‘maximizing value’ without a care as to the core values and pedigree of Donut.
Thank you for making this brilliant decision and I hope to follow your success with this new channel.
yep, those suits only care about the numbers because the moment they get kicked out or burned the company to the ground, they've built their portfolio and made their money. All on paper, they were successful but in reality, they were poor managers.
Donut had pedagree?? 😂
Private equity ruins everything
They were sold in 2021 so unless you have disliked them since then and all their series then it wasn’t just the private equity that ruined them
What do the suits do? They look at a spreadsheet and see that certain videos do better than others. So they start doing more of those, and improving them… having more money and oversight doesn’t necessarily ruin a small biz
Jeremiah is just that guy. I mean, he talks about how he wasn't exactly favored at first, but 5 days after posting these two almost have a million subs. 🐐
Talk about the ultimate getting your tires pumped hey? Can’t imagine the relief these two boys got after so many views and subs in so little time. Super excited for you guys!
These 2 are definitely the best out of the donut crew
Glad you guys are better off! Excited for motorcycle content, maybe a trackday?
I loved watching both of you gentleman throughout the years I hope for the best ill be coming with you!!
I was incredibly confused when y'alls made the video about the S13 engine autopsy and the rebuild never came, so glad theres going to be more of the grassroots stuff, im hype
Tbh the amount of donut employees that lacked automotive knowledge always blew my mind. Most of them never gave me “car guy” vibes.
I think that's actual ok or even good, IF, it leads to a passion and knowledge. I'd like to see that average joe like myself that doesn't know much be able to work for a company like them and learn and get under the hood of a car
Yeah I liked it. Made me feel like if these guys could learn as they go then I shouldnt be afraid to give it a go.
Like Nolan? Great guy, good on camera, but more of a Motor Trend writer than a grease monkey. Most magazine writers couldn't fix a ham sandwich.
Well do you want mechanic content or car entertainment? Theres only so many ways to replace brakes on a car that after the 3rd video its all the same. Bolting on car parts without modifications is in similar faschion.

I can relate to you both so much in different ways. I’m mechanically inclined, but not a “car guy”, really. I work in the medical field of heart surgery. But watching you both on Donut made me feel like, “if these guys can do this, I can to.” So now I’ve built a DF Goblin from a donor Chevy Cobalt SS and in the process, I reached a lot of mile markers, so to speak. I pulled my first engine, rebuilt my first engine, rebuilt my first manual transmission, and the list goes on. I’m excited to see where you guys go and what you do.
I am stoked and excited to see what comes. Big respect to you both following your dreams. Huge inspiration!
I cant believe Donut didn’t want a video/series dedicated to building your Silvia! I think I speak for everyone, I’m looking very forward to this channel.
That’s what happens when corporate establishments buy something. They turn it into another shit, clickbait RUclips channel to get the most clicks instead of making actual content that we car people want to see. It’s sad. Screw those corporate drones who bought them and destroyed the channel. I really do hope Donut falls off the map soon and people stop supporting these corporate buyouts.
It’s important that you both know: we as the fans and audience noticed the changes that pushed you both away, and we are all on your side to blow this channel up by taking it back to grassroots builds and making the content YOU love to make. It’s crazy how people haven’t learned from Smosh that when you sell your channel for the money, the channel takes a dump.
It's because they paydays are too good. Creators could be investing everything back into the channel so they don't really make much money, then someone offers them several million dollars in cash to sell the channel. Hard to say no to that.
I think it’s the companies that buy these channels that need the lesson. When they change things and become inauthentic trying capitalize on their investment, we easily recognize it and lose interest.
@@brianshineboxmfg4404 truth. Companies can buy them all they want, but they shouldn't change everything about how it's run and how the creative team works.
@@brianshineboxmfg4404 We are on like the 3rd wave of this. A lot of this content just can't support the profits the buying entities expect while still paying the talent. Second Wind is doing amazing. Dropout is a powerhouse. It's amazing how well a lot of these businesses do when the business model strips back how many people are taking a cut of the pie.
I've watched Smosh for years and the BIGGEST example I've seen yet, even over Smosh, is a channel called YeaMad based out of Australia.
YeaMad took a Smosh approach to it all, but they only started doing this like a year or two ago. They hired some cute girls with attitude and who were pretty funny, some cool dudes and became really successful in a matter of months. Like thousands of subs within months. Within that first year, they fired all the original cast and EVERYONE noticed due to the fact that the new cast was nothing like the old one and people already had crushed for the people that were already there.
The channel lost thousands of subs because of it. Lost a lot of popularity. At least Smosh doesn't get rid of the whole cast at once though.
You writing the script for James makes so much sense now

I think low budget is a lot of the appeal of many channels. I don't think this one will be different, and as they grow in following and money, so too will the content. A grassroots beginning is a ton of fun to experience as a viewer. Good luck boys.
Massive growth kills every youtube channel. You see it over and over again
Throttle House is a happy exception to that
Hagerty gets a pass too 😅
It depends how well it was managed in the first place and the terms of the sale
When you complain about convincing someone else to do the videos you want to do, think about the video as well. Why are you "putting $30000 of parts in a $200 car". Is this actually a good video idea?

As a finance guy who works in the corporate world, there's nothing that can kill a company like running it purely by the numbers. It's crazy how rampant it is for managers to think every decision needs to be made to directly improve a financial metric. It totally ignores the customer's (viewers) needs and kills the soul of the company. If you're giving the people what they want the finances will be fine, unless you're just intentionally burning cash on bullshit.
The execs who lead by spreadsheet pay the price eventually. They’re either getting outperformed by AI or the ones who take care of their employees and customers.
Happening more and more lately and I’m all for it.
The private equity efficiency over everything mindset is a parasite that is ruining America piece by piece.
There are RUclipsrs like Mr beast or WD that spend obscene amounts of cash on stupid bullshit, but it’s stupid bullshit that the viewers like to see. At the end of it all, just like you said, those two aren’t exactly strapped for cash!
MBAs have killed corporate/business culture. Look at Boeing as the biggest example.
Bobby, I agree with you and had a comment on your comment. Its always got to be a balance. Entertainment is very different than tech and microbusiness producers are very different than enterprise mindsets. The bigger the company, the more eyes are on 'risk management'. The business leadership vision (for customer value, product quality, reach, whatever the metric) MUST be stronger than the pursuit of profit as the top value. Just my $0.02

Is James still there? I haven’t seen Donut in my algo recently
The reaction mechanics are the MVPs now, not the Donut cast
@Zoabdy Sandros the only one we care about. He would make $$$ doing his own channel.
The Money Pit Miata buildalong in your garage was my favourite series on Donut. Nothing after was as good. I'm really looking forward to what you have coming.
You guys were by far my favorite part of the donut channel. Can’t say enough how much I’m looking forward to better car guy content. Very excited to see what you guys do!
Think we all appreciate the transparency in this video! Salary talk, money talk, personal stuff etc
If you can in life always work for yourself. You have control, you take all the risk but receive the benefits of all your hard work. I could never work for someone else ever again, especially in the corporate world.
@@Peanutdenverbig corpo gives you security and no more than 35 work hours a week.
That is tempting as an engineer.
But you are wasting your potential, which is sad.
Over here in Germany it’s also much harder to start something and make good money.
@@rolux4853"no more than 35 hours a week" 😂
Yeah, you obviously do live outside of the US. I guarentee these guys we were working 50+ hours a week, especially if they were filming. Minimum for full time in the US, I believe, is currently 37 hours a week, but the standard for full time is 40 hours minimum.
Wow here in Aus I’m on a salary but it’s minimum 50 hours here.
Are they busting out RAINBOW flags, LOVERS?
740K subs with just this one video so far... you guys will be just fine. We felt the changes you talk about and we agree. We're here for whatever you want to show us.
Exactly.
I said it months ago. Commented a few times knowing it would fall on deaf ears.
just 2 hours later 770k
literally watched it roll over to 770k lol
@@oddmanout1807 lmfao cringe, bet you commented this everywhere
Proud of y’all! Can’t wait to see the stuff you guys put out!
It's crazy to think that I'm watching this video while rebuildingcc the rear brakes on an old Audi- my first project car that I got because of the inspiration I got from you.
A shout out to Bart just made me shed a tear 🥹 Bart was and forever will be the best thing Donut ever had.
I believe many of us share this sentiment!
Who's bart?
Literally never saw bart
@@problemdude390bart was science garage when donut was first starting off it was the best
@@bonecrusher1777whos bart?!? 🥺
I thought you guys were all part owners and friends making fun vids together. Working for corporations takes the fun out of everything because it's 100% about profits.
I hope you have FUN with this channel. I'm here for it!
The 2 guys from donut that actually brought true "car guy" stuff to the table, awesome
Thanks for everything you've done in Donut and I wish the best for you guys in you new channel. I've always learned so much from you in your Donut era. I hope you keep up the good work boys.
These 2 dudes carried donut HARD. This channel is gonna be nuts
"don't worry, you'll still be seeing us!" then i click over to this channel and it's "why we're leaving donut"!
THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING
but youll still be seeing them (for a short while)
I thought the same, I guess that just means it was filmed awhile back.
Seriously 😂
Same.
Dudes, thanks for being real and honest with your fans. I was getting tired of "Professional Mechanics react to Tiktok" b/s., esp when Money Pit is what first pulled me in. I'm a gearhead in my 50's, and am always looking for content that is genuine, not over-produced and not created only for max views. I wish you nothing but luck. I subscribed immediately and can't wait to see what you do here. You are *clearly* good people who deserve success!
Noticed a while ago Donut was making changes and some of my favorite stuff was going away. Glad to see you guys branching out and doing what you love and giving us the content we all want. So excited to see what this channel brings!
the two people that kept me watching donut cutting out all the other stuff to just do their own thing? subbed and bell
Fr
For real
Most accurate comment yet
100%, them talking about getting to do less of the stuff they like echoed my own feelings about how much I enjoyed the old donut videos
Facts!!
Classic case of the Suits showing up and thinking that they’re the reason for success and not the creatives. Congratulations to you guys for fighting for your creative freedom. Can’t wait to see where this channel goes.
I think that's too simple. There are many ways to gauge success. If we are looking from a financial standpoint, I wouldn't be surprised if their ways are very successful, even in the long run.
The issue with chasing viewership though, is that it's less fun for the people making it, at least some. Remember that something can be commercially good, people enjoy making, and people enjoy watching.
These 2 guys didn't enjoy making it as much, so they moved on.
@@benjaminvdvyt Their viewership was changing only because of the direction the suits were driving while ignoring creatives.
ruclips.net/video/NlBjNmXvqIM/видео.html&ab_channel=SteveJobs I always think of this when suits run it into the ground
The last minute of the things to come was SICKKK! Glad to see the quality of editing is transferred. Excited for that big rig build
Leave LA now that you're not tied to Doughnut. Go to a better car location in the mid west or east. Totally agree Doughnut isn't what it used to be and we need a fresh take for fun car content.
The Donut Miata build is what grew my interest in cars from an observer to an active member.
It was the same for me. I knew nothing about cars, let alone modifying cars until Zachs series.
Ikr? It made cars feel so much more accessible and doable than they had before, i went from just changing my own oil to working as a mechanic because of that series
