    Please read this before commenting: This is a one-off part, and this was the fastest way to make it with the tooling I have available at my shop. No, I should not have used CAD, it would have taken longer with no benefit. The ovals intersect at compound angles (rotated inward and downward), and the round tube is offset to one side. Measuring and drawing this all up perfectly to make templates on a computer would take a lot of unnecessary additional time. And no, this is not a part that would be practical to 3d print. It is going on an engine, so it is exposed to heat cycling and vibration.

    You are a highly skilled fabricator that I enjoy watching. It's amazing how you come up with patterns and design. I was an Aluminum Instructor in my early days and spent 40 plus years as a welder and fabricator but the skills you display make me look like a rookie and I was pretty darn good. I'm disabled and have difficulty doing anything any more but your videos really lift my spirits. I still have a Miller 330 A/BP AC/DC welding machine that looks like brand new, approximately 100 hours or less on it. If I can round up some materials I might try and duplicate some of the great builds you have done, should be interesting with my HF only going to 100 on my machine. I'm sure you are using a machine with at least 400 setting on HF. I started out Oxygen/Acetylene welding and the dipping pattern came pretty easy. We used to gas weld our Aluminum since we didn't have an AC/DC HF machine till later when I bought my first one, a Miller 230 A/BP in 1972 or 1973. What a fantastic machine to have at the time. Sorry to rattle on, your videos are encouraging and I hope the young welders benefit from you sharing your skills. Thank you.

    I have never been a fabricator. I was a machinist for a number of years and I have come to this conclusion. All of this CAD and Solid Modeling that has come along has dulled our edge a bit. working with tools and materials in real time teaches one to find solutions that would never occur to the CAD Pilot. As an example, the play dough thing is one I just recently saw for the first time. THAT my friend is a MASTER STROKE! I will surely add this to my tool box soon!

    What an intricate way to make a very awkward part. Well done. Loved the fully sanded down shape, and THEN weld the bottom section on. Also liked the smoothing out of the buildup with the arc. It looked really schmick when it was finished.

    • @fullboostturbo1
      @fullboostturbo1 5 лет назад +1

      Smoothing out the buildup/blending the weld in is something that anyone who has done quite a bit of Alu welding knows all too well about, I used to be able to lay a single bead of Alu like it was done by a Robot Alu Mig welder back in the day many many moons ago.

    The best TIG welding I have ever seen in my 44 years on this Earth. My Dad was a Boilermaker/Welder for just over 50 years and pales in comparison. What do they say "you have either got it, or you don't?". It is the little tricks and techniques that make everything easy, and you my friend, have a lot of them up your sleeve. I look forward to trying and learning them for myself. I want to learn and perfect every one, you are willing to show and teach. Nice vid bro.

  • @raydreamer7566

    I also have to add that I never would have thought of using playdough as a mold to assist in mapping the necessary shape for cutting the complex bottom flange for the final weldment section. That was a real time saver. In the passed I was Tig welding an airplane frame and did not have the proper larger size filler rod for the landing gear welding so I put 3 smaller welding rods close together in a vice and then the other end in a electric drill and spun the 3 rods tightly together to make one larger rod and finished the project. Just sharing.

The problem is I am BRAND new in the welding scene and haven't got all the addons to convert my stick welder to TIG yet. Maybe some day, or I'll do it in mild steel and then powder coat it! You definitely have inspired me to do something outside my wheelhouse.

    • @johnpike9612
      @johnpike9612 5 лет назад

      You'll always wish you had gone stainless. Just do it, it's not that expensive for the Tig torche and bottle. Just practice first or you'll end up powder coating your stainless piece anyways

    • @bretbradbury5559
      @bretbradbury5559 5 лет назад +2

      Trouble with stainless is you need argon on both sides of your weld, or at least need to prevent oxygen from getting to it. You could use solar flux instead of flowing argon on both sides while you construct your piece. I would recommend building it out of mild steel first, for the practice and then stainless since stainless is so much tougher to work with and your current level of experience. Best of luck with it!

    The beauty of Aluminium being able to go over welds your not entirely happy with and make the passes look amazing, I remember it well back in 1976 thankfully we had H/F start then but that was the only aid no slope in, slope out, pre gas purge or post and certainly no pulse back then but welding Aluminium was a joy. Thankfully I was only doing the welding I had very experienced sheet metal fabricators who after they had done their part would leave me with a fabrication that was a joy to weld. I learn so much from your vid's - one of the (sadly) secrets found on the interweb.
    Little surprised you didn't just form up a 'cap' from the offcuts to weld in, rather than do the building up over the opening?

    This is next level stuff! Your welds on the inside of the tubing are better than most peoples, on the outside surface! Never seen such quality alloy welding. My bottom jaw is on the table! incredible fabrication skills! A ballet in logical and 'outside the square' thinking!

    I like the consumable mockup jig. Totally stealing that.
    You could do one or more videos on metal finishing - products, techniques, etc. For those of us who can can use the bright-blue glue gun pretty well, but haven't learned how to make otherwise functional parts *beautiful* like that.

      Time is always a factor in building a part vs buying the same part, time spent building that Ypipe probably cost as much as buying 5 or more. But that said the aluminum one looks 100 times better.
