      @5:45 I see that you "earth" your tungsten against the workpiece ... I have noticed this before with my welding too. As if the arc doesn't want to start. I can not remember that my teacher ever told me why this happens. What would the reason be that it sometimes need to be "earthed"? Thanks in advance.

    Your weld beads remind me of my fathers. In the 1970’s he welded huge compression wheels some of them up to 15 feet in diameter. These looked like turbocharger fans and were made of plate material, Chromoly, stainless and aluminum, the fins being stamped. They were preheated @ 500^F in ovens with small doors to access welding and grinding, for as long as a year until one man would complete. In the 50’s while still in high school, he opened a shop resurfacing plowshares, eventually with dealers across three states. He also welded many racehorse sulkies with egg shaped tubing. Before he passed, I ask him how many times he would have put a weld bead around the earth, he said “I would be afraid to guess.”

      Thanks for that. It amazes me how long some things take to produce. The wheels for trains were friction welded then sat outside to naturally age and stress relieve for something like 10 years I heard. Just amazing. Big respect to your father sir.

    Beautiful work!!! Back in the eighties I welded for a military contractor. All types- mig, tig, stick. All the metals --- aluminum, stainless, mild steel and titanium in a chamber. Had to retest all every six months. Wasn't really production type work. Mostly refit or design and fabrication of whatever. Really enjoyed that job.

      Funny you bring that up! I’ve had a Lincoln square wave 175 for years, and I thought I was hearing a gas leak inside the case. I removed the cover and discovered those points were the source of the sound I was hearing! I had no idea what they were, but knew they were adjustable by the set screws! I’d love to see a vid on adjusting those also!

    When you're welding it out there are tiny little granules that accumulate on the surface - are those little particles of aluminum that are spit out of the puddle?

      Good question! I never paid attention to that before, but you've got me curious too. In the really close shots (thank you 6061!) you can see occasional little sparkles or particles that appear to be emitted from the weld as he goes along.

    Weld hexagons in your hexagon jig so the point is as straight up as you can get and hope to keep some of the argon on the weld.
    Note, your hexagon jig should have like a half inch gap between its plates so that you can flip it over and have your weld pieces show their belly.

      Maybe do a side by side test with two similar plants and let us know how it goes? One in a clay pot, one aluminum. Try to keep all other variables as close as possible. Watering, pot size, sunlight, etc.

    • @fastindy
      @fastindy 2 года назад

      For 1/4" aluminum you might need up to ~250 amps (=0.250"). 130 isn't going to cut it. You might be able to get a little farther by preheating your pieces but it's going to be an uphill battle.

    You would be the guy who could repair my scooter seat and make it functional again. I have a sit stand scooter that I cannot use the seat because it was broken when I bought it and the company no longer sells the seats or the scooter. It's a bolt welded to the aluminum seat frame that is broken off where the seat folds and closes for standing and opens for sitting. The seat was allegedly designed to hold up to 250 lbs. It's possible but the welds were poorly done. I'm in Southern California. Is there anyway you can repair it for me or guide me to someone who can help me out. It's not a big job at all I just want it done right so that I can use my scooter to run/ride with my dogs again.
