Mike Keneally matches Steve note for note- amazing feat of musicianship❗️👍🏻
That's how we get stereo.
he is the silent roar of all us unsung guys...
Anyone can eventually copy someone but can he create thia before anyone else?
In harmony no less..
@@RonGrover665can we see your version?
The golden era of Vai. Just untouchable.
I believe THIS is actually his golden era. He wasn't mainstream discovered really back then, just kind of a cult favorite. So many generations now know him and buy his music and appreciate him. Now much like Pantera, he blew up during the best time and the worst time in history. What a time to be alive.
I think the next tour beat this one.... but just barely.
Agreed
What's better than Steve Vai playing The Attitude Song?
Steve and Mike Meneally doing it in sync.
When you beat all levels of the “Difficult Time Signature” game and you face the final boss
I never thought I'd see someone showing up Steve Vai. But at 2:30, Steve is watching his own hands. Meanwhile, Mike Keneally is NOT watching his own hands, he's watching Steve's hands, and they both sound great.
Mike keneally is a beast on its own 😊
watching your hands can simply be a habit.Doesnt mean anything.
this was in my opinion Steve's best band ever
It's Zappa's band borrowed by Steve but yes.
@@ianedmonds9191Zappa was long dead.
he had commitment issues and moved around way too much
indeed - Agreed
Most people do not imagine how lucky Steve Vai is to have, on his right side, such an AMAZING MUSICIEN (and guitarist) like Mike Keneally. He is absolutely insane, especially I guess on this tour and this song.
Philip Bynoe on bass
Mike Mangini on drums
And the incredible Mike Keneally on guitar...
Thank you very much
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Mike Mangini killing it on drums
if the bassist wore a hat
it would be a hat trick
Not enough props got to the beast on the drums...unbelievable
Mike Mangini for you 🤗
There are some bootlegs from Vai's non-G3 concerts from this fire garden tour. Mangini is on fire. Lookup for "Bad Horsie Minneapolis 1993" for a gist.
We're fortunate to have been exposed to his drumming.
The spirit of Frank Zappa is alive and well with these two players. ;)
What a reminder of how F'n amazing Vai is. I bought this cassette when it came out and it was so strange and different (wasn't aware of Zappa yet!) No one sounded like Steve then or now. This is a flawless performance and Mr. Keneally doesn't miss a note on the 2nd essential guitar part of this tune. Electric guitar heaven!
No one sounded like Steve then or now.
And thank God for that , this is unlistenable . Vai is much better than what he's playing here . This is embarrassing .
That cassette almost had me institutionalized. it was like the Lollipop guild kidnaped me and made love to my goldfish. It just wasn't right but I had no one to complain to yet I felt I should pay someone for something. I feel like anything from 1984 has that same something.
I would like to hear an isolated track of Mike Kenneally's playing. I'm yet to be convinced he is anywhere near Steve's accuracy and punch. Mike is an allrounder. If he was kinda up there he would have had the opportunity to show his ability with Zappa. Unlike Stevies' Spanking there is no featured Mike K song
@@2216sammylol, you stink. You can't play a lick and you haven't produced anything worth a damn. Sit down and shut up.
@@frankbreuer8849 zappa universe dvd. I doubt this performance is edited. Mike IS simply that versatile.
Mike Keneally can do everything steve vai can, note for note.
Ich Kinder Liebe and yet he isn’t even credited on this video
Couldn’t agree more, Satriani wouldn’t be without him! Never seen anyone play keyboards and guitar simultaneously like Mike!
I love how Vai is always looking over and smiling at Mike and Mike is looking at the damn fret board like any normal person!!
@@marcsmith4261 Tony macalpine is just as good I think.
From Mike's website (this was interesting, since I had an idea for years that something had to be redone in MK's parts, and now I know):
"My guitar parts had to be redone in Steve's studio because the microphone which was placed on my amplifier for the live recording was trashed and useless, so I got to experience the magic of re-recording my "Attitude Song" part under the watchful eye of the composer. It was fun! I haven't had such minute attention to detail focused on my playing since, oh, 1988 or so. We did a lot of laughing and I enjoyed being subjected to such scrutiny. Let me re-emphasize: I REALLY LIKE being in Steve Vai's band."
So perhaps there were a few multitracks going on here. Given Vai changes, adds and re-records things on almost every live release, it wouldn't surprise me.
Saw Steve Vai, back in 85 or 86 playing with David Lee Roth. DLR stepped offstage for one of his costume changes, and Steve ripped into the Attitude, and I lost my shit. My friends wondered why I was berserk. Damn, felt like I was the only person in Wichita that knew what was happening.
Shit, I wish I could've seen that!
Man, Steve’s CPA certainly can play guitar. I hope he tours with him again soon! :-)
That has to be the greatest dual guitar jam ever. Holy crap.
Steve and Mike = Human Harmonizers. Not even Eventide´s harmonizers can sync so perfectly! 😊
Philip Bynoe is such an amazing bass player. And look at him GROOVING at 1:21.
Never fails to make me smile. Sounds as amazing today as it did on the flexi-disc from the guitar mag all those years ago. A rollercoaster ride from beginning to end.
That drummer though. Inventing a beat to follow this guitar work? Incredible
Mike Mangini. He plays with Dream Theater now.
He didn't invent the beat i.e. he didn't write it. Steve Vai probably wrote it or at least the drummer from the studio recording did.
@@tonypaella- Maybe, but he improved a LOT of the Portnoy era DT music.
@@danlc95 that could very well be. I don't follow dream theater much and what I know is from the portnoy era. It's just not my cup of tea music wise.
I would take my hat off if I had one on. Breathtaking. For anyone who has ever attempted to play that song. Offbeat triplet with a key change every other measure mixed with square 4/4 then back to the verse Mister Vai?
Sounds Delicious.😁😎🤘
I remember first hearing this on a floppy record from an American guitar magazine, every guitar player i knew was stunned, rightfully so.
I got my copy copy in Guitar Player magazine. I think I wore it out in about a week of constant playing. It was amazing then now still mind blowing.
I think this is the great line up that he ever has.. mike keneally on guitar and mike mangini on drums..they are totally awesome..
The REAL difference between Steve and Mike. Mike can go to the mall and shop without getting mobbed.
And a few zeros in the bank acct
They 5ta
@@louisnunezjr5304 xDD
and only one looks good shirtless in leather pants.
The real difference is Steve writes this music and that’s big
Mike Mangini is super clean on this. His kit appears to be all roto toms.
When is Mangini not destroying any song he's attempting? Guy is the Steve Vai of the drums.
@@SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggington what...
@@mirkecWii What don't you understand?
His sound is so good back here
For sure! 1996-97 era Vai has the best sound, I think. His has the tour rig documented in pictures here: www.vai.com/fire-garden-gear/ The Legacy I gets close to this sound with some outboard gear but this sound is IT for Vai.
Doesn't sound good nowadays?
@@davidletterboyz his current rig is sounding pretty close to this era actually.
1:53 - note he is using a stereo full wet-dry-wet rig, with a mix-and-match of 3 different amps, feeding four cabinets (3 miked). Sure that they were able to capture a quite rich frequency range.
TLDR: Rich recording + good mixing and stellar execution
What i would give to hear that rig live!!! I love the legacy and the synergy. But i always come back to this tone.
I can tell his other guitarist is a humble dude. He could be just as famous as Vai and take the fame but he lays back and appreciates what magic and history he is part of, and relish in it without being well known. Pretty awesome. I may search dudes name and try and get his name out more. Lol
Mike Keneally. Briefly another stunt guitarist for Zappa and an incredible musician.
Always loved how Mike Keneally looked like he was on his way to work in IT support somewhere - and just casually matching Vai note for note, bend for bend, tap for tap 😂 what a legend!
Mike Mangini - FANTASTIC
FINALLY! This legendary concert on youtube!!!
Por que antes no estaba en RUclips?
@@brandonjimenez9609 Ni idea, recuerdo que una vez lo habia encontrado en una pagina japonesa.
Seguramente por derechos de autor...
wow that natural finish JEM is beautiful
Julian Stacy I agree, it caught my eye❗️🎸
My favorite Jem, the RB (Rootbeer)
Although most RBs didn't have the fingers routed in the monkey grip, just a slot
@@jameskotrba7135 actually i think they were using the neville prototype jem, the one that was auctioned off
This is the trio of players plus Steve I grew up with. Steve always picks amazing musicians for his touring band
Technically astonishing, from both Vai and Mike Keneally. I just love the way Guitar magazine readers voted Steve Vai the 10th best guitarist of all time. If he was the 10th best...
I saw Vai with Keneally onboard once in Adelaide Australia.
Without a doubt was the most mental guitar show on the planet at the time. Saw him with DLR on the Skyscraper tour as well. Great showman.
Boy, you would never look at the dorky looking guy with the purple hat, and think that guy was a genius on guitar! Mike Keneally, you just blew me away. Anybody that can go toe to toe with Steve Vai, has some serious chops!
Jeez that attitude song duo was special.
That is some crazy spectacular guitar playing...Absolutely outstanding really! Steve was pretty incredible as well!
Kills me at 2:35ish that Steve (the creator of the song) is watching his left hand, while Mike Keneally doesn't need to... At any rate, true Masters of their Craft!
Or Mike Keneally forgot that part and needed to look at Steve Vai's fingers to see how it is played lol
Or it's just habit... Guitarists tend to look at their fingers even if they know what they need to play without looking.
And the rest of the song? Stop keep looking in stupid things dude
Ive never seen Slash use a whammy bar....WOW!!!!
Actually Slash used and uses a B. C. Rich Mockingbird with a Floyd Rose sometimes. ;-) ruclips.net/video/LUtvWvf1vq0/видео.html
Not to take anything away from this masterpiece but man, I can't believe the song "the audience is listening" isn't more popular. That song is fucking ASTRONOMICAL.
Yes.. Also a fair bit of passion and warfare is taken from flexable.. And a lot of vai only really knew vai frim passion n watfare... Funny
The way the synchronised sweeps at the end lead up to the trademark guitar laugh of vai is exhilarating.
I read somewhere in the comments that if you hate vai it's probably because you cannot wrap your head around his genius. I can relate. When I first heard this as a youngster it went completely over my head
Oh pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ha ha ha ha ha . This stuff sucks .
I saw them that year at the Orpheum in Boston. Vai, Satch, and Johnson with guest, Adrian Legg. Absolute best show on earth.
Me too!!!
How bizarre and great this song is !
Looks like Auckland, New Zealand @ THE POWER STATION! I was on the balcony with my band, i was the drummer, mike blow my mind, what an amazing performance, you had to be there, WOW!
we call notice the guitars but shout-out Mike's amazing drum work
Mike Mangini🐎
is he?
Yup..mike mangini
1:22 I like that guy on bass when he dancing the head shake.
This guy is a living legend
25 years later I'm still randomly getting this stuck in my head, and I run to YT to hear the live version!
Incoparable, inimitable, un genio.
This song grooves. Too bad nobody mentions it.
At least you can be sure everyone feels it!
You did-Thank you. Vai still rules!
Mind boggling ly incredible.
What a lineup! Great to see Phil still playing with Vai - saw them recently and it was wicked!
3:26 Holy Zappa Batman!! 🎸🔥🔥🔥
Dazzling! One of the best guitar player ever seen!
This music is keeping me up. Cant get enough. Thanks Guys!
Mike Keneally showing he can play anything given to him.
I bet Steve transrcibed the whole thing like Zappa would've.
Vai was a player and a writer. Keneally may have been as well but he excelled as a player of transcripts.
Luv and Peace.
Simply amazing.
Saw Steve Vai live a couple nights ago and Philip Bynoe was in the band, I didn't realize they had played together for so long. Cool!
just here to appreciate mike mangini because he was a genie in dream theater lol
Era un dream team Vai & Mangini!
Toca increíble Steve Vai 🍺👽🚬
Great talent all of them

O.M.F.G
Pure enjoying and entertainment :)
The other guitarist can follow Steve Vai effortlessly.
....Just read the other comments. Is that Mike Keneally? Gotta google this guy. He looks like an accountant (except for the hat), but he's kicking ass on stage.
Keneally is a BEAST and Phillip bynoe on dat bass BOOM
