Oh...not really. He is good but has his style. Satriani is ...for me better in playing the blues anyway which is what they tried to do here. Steve Vai is the wrong person for these songs lol. But he did what he could. No, Johnson has a mediocre sound and that damn pentatonic lick birthed bonamassa. I don't like it played all the time damn it. Johnson is amazing with his material obviously but, again please don't compare. Satriani is a master of many trades. Literally, MASTER.
@@georgepagakis9854 I have to agree with you on most of your points. Eric Johnson is a master of the fretboard and an incredibly skilled musician. "Red House" is just not his genre. "playing a bunch of notes like he does which musically suck." Before I attack this comment, I want to ask what you meant by it.
My dad showed me this when I was a kid and it changed my musical taste forever. He died March 15 2022, RIP dad, wish we got to see g3 together 😭😭😭 can’t wait until my favourite songs don’t make me sad and think about missing you.
Part of being a stellar, self assured musician is to do whats best for the song versus letting your ego take over. Excellent example being what Eric does at 6:01. Sees Satriani and Vai go nuts with their shreddy harmony stuff (which I loved btw) in the higher register and then chooses to play some basic arpeggios in the lower register just to balance the sound out. Could have ripped out a solo too but chose not to, FOR THE SONG. Thats Eric Johnson for you!!
Vai and Satriani are the always at the opposite end from "doing what's best for the song", I don't know how they sustain careers built solely on their fanbase of bedroom guitarists.
@@sinceagesago5258 satriani is good with blues rock licks since his style is close to hendrix.. but in 12 bar blues. He does not have the variaty with the sool of blues players such as eric johnson ... Classic blues is all about note choice and soul.. it is something you can not get it with only practice
I met Eric Johnson some years ago in Austin,Tx...He was a very nice guy,l got a couple of pictures with him and also l met Tommy Shannon from SRV's Double Trouble another nice and humble musician
Their won't any other G3 then the very best OG G3... this is so nostalgic ..back then had no idea what these guys are up for but now this is absolute gold..
Lo de eric Johnson es espectacular, lim´pio, técnico, sin adornos innecesarios y con un sentimiento que pega directo a la cabeza y el corazón; lo de Satriani y Steve Vai, increíble, qué trío!
The best rendition of this song, Satch & Vai had a tendency to overdo, Eric however managed to keep the things together. Having said, some of Vai licks were great & the synchronous duel of Satch & Vai was perfect
Johnson overdid it. Satriani is by far the only one tuned in on the damn song. Which is something happening often in g3 shows and then he goes off as well and all control is lost.
Sounds like Joe read a "how to play blues" column in one of those magazines he's featured in so heavily, Guitar World or Guitar Bore or Guitar Wank or whatever they were called.
What I love about Eric's playing is that he doesn't go off to mars with his playing. He's the only guitar player that plays Hendrix studio work with tremendous accuracy live. When you're a shredder on guitar, it's very easy to exaggerate and go off on the guitar. But Eric is the only one I see that plays Hendrix stuff live with the utmost respect and with the closest accuracy........... Check out his rendition ( are you experienced ) by Eric live............
De hecho es el único que vale la pena escuchar, Satriani y Vai me resultan hasta estorbosos porque saturan la canción, sus frases están llenas de lugares comunes y, en caso de Vai, de extravagancias que no vienen al caso.
While some fans want to project their egos by saying that one guitarist is better than the other, these guitar legends are just having fun playing with each other and not thinking about who is better on the stage.
Eric Jhonson fantástico, enquanto Satriani e Vai estão solando ele está fazendo bases e criando linhas com doubles stops entre outras coisas que enriquecem a música !!!
Gosh I love these guys... I can never decide who is my favourite, it changes day by day... Steve Vai will always be my hero, but j is soo smoth and warm, and Satch... well... It’s Satch, what can ya say
@@Alex.Murphy0987 He's not talking about this specific video , he's talking in general . Satriani is a really good blues player . You search for some vids of him
Well said mate. 'Good' and 'best' are always just opinions. I personally would say that Steve Vai is way out of his element playing the blues. I don't enjoy his blues playing or tone, but it would be ridiculous to say it's bad. It's just not for me!! :) Eric and Satch KILLED this one in my opinoin though!!!

When I used to watch this DVD as a kid I always skipped EJ, and just watched Satch and Vai. Now I just watch EJ
Same here with me ...i guess its bcuz the older we get the more we understand music....
Me too LOL
When i was kid i watched only EJ on this dvd 😆
Fuck yeah! Mee too! Lol!
That kid was me!! haha.
Thank goodness Johnson rescued Satriani and Vai from themselves.
yea man too right so natural
via and satrianni (soz cant spell)are the reason i gave up playing guitar
Hahahahaha

totally agree, you can see on minute 6:02 how Steve Vai react to his background riff matching perfectly.
Eric Johnson guitar playing was so fucking elegant.
for me, nothing can top the very first G3. Eric Johnson is my most favorite.
indeed!
Eric Johnson is the best. Has an angelic voice and a perfect guitarist.

R.i.p dad
G3 original lineup is touring again in 2024 - check their website
My father was also a huge fan of Eric Johnson, but I showed him this G3 dvd. He also loved Cliffs of Dover. My dad also passed away this year 😭
Best G3 era..

I just love Eric's tone & timing. I can listen to this all day long.
Eric Johnson playing some nice rhythm and bass lines during the climactic solos.
Eric johnson is the close one of them to the blues guitar playing...
The Bass player comes pretty close as well...
Let me disagree. I think Joe's first solo was true blues. It sounded quite simple and I think he really felt it.
You obviously one sided here, Satch has some beautiful blues licks as well.
Eric is more old school kind of player ... even his tune is more "blueslike", but overall they are all amazing!

Three stars on the planet earth
Johnson is king! The bass player and drummer were awesome! I’ll just leave it at that!

No question they played much more tastefully at g3s back then compared to recent ones.
4:52-4:58 the original blues guitar playing.
