I remember being into Satriani, Malmsteen and Vai as a teen. Then I watched this G3 performance with Eric and it changed me. Now As a nearly 40 year old, with a music degree in jazz and a full-time music teaching job, it's a bit harder to knock my socks off. But this guy and this particular performance continues to melt my face every time I hear it, without fail. The most unique lead sound on a strat I've ever heard. Not to mention the most considered melodies. The more you learn, the more you can appreciate Eric.
Eric always has had a superb bassist. Kyle Brock is a badass and Chris Marsch is dang good as well. His best drummer is Tommy Taylor but Brennon Temple sounds excellent here and gets my approval.
Mariano Camacho on the 1997 G3 live in concert album, they’ve spliced together this song from different nights. Pentatonic scales, if this is how you understand music I am sorry for you, this is musical expression, do you understand music is not an Olympic event?
@@Deliquescentinsight Correct. Majority of the great musicians don't think about what scale they are using. What they are doing is playing the sounds that are in their head through the guitar. Its amazing how so many people seem to bypass that.
Players like Eric are rare. He and guys like Robben Ford play in a way that is very deliberate and calculated while also managing not to micromanage the natural flow out of the riffs. I’m not sure if that makes sense but that’s the best way I can put it. Played beautifully and squeaky clean without sounding sterile.
I consider this the perfect guitar song. Not only for the inspired composition, but for the exquisite and perfect playing of this guitar master. I still remember when this came out. I was in high school, thought I was a great guitarist since I'd been playing for a couple years, and I bought this VHS to watch Satch and Vai play. I'd never heard of Eric Johnson and figured id have to forward past his songs to get to the good stuff. He's one of my all-time favorites, and it started with this performance.
I still close my eyes like I did when was 17 years old back in the 90s pretending to play the guitar in front of a huge crowd every time I hear this masterpiece.

The reason I love this guy, apart from his style and musicality, is that his lead guitar tone didn't change over the years. Even if his fellow guitarists we're busy improving their sound here and there. He really claimed this tonal identity.
You can't help but smile whenever you listen to Eric Johnson. As a guitar enthusiast and hobby lead player myself, i smile to myself a lot when i listen to Eric. He knew the fretboard truly in his own way. Like Jeff Beck.
This version was the first I heard (by the way, the best G3), and, to me, it would never sound as fantastic as in this gig. Sometimes, this kind of things happen in music, the right place, the right moment.
