- I've been wanting to make a video about this for a really long time, and I'm glad that it's finally happening. While a lot of the stuff I say in this video will definitely make some people mad, I stand by everything in terms of it's effectiveness.
There are a lot of things that I might not have mentioned, but I do think this video is pretty comprehensive. I will probably make more videos about how to get people to apply, and how to deal with different guild situations in the future depending on how this video does!

No, not anymore, but a friend of mine got me into it back in '04/'05/'06, around that time. Played solo almost all the time, although I was grateful for the couple of millions him and one of his friends gave me as starting isk, just to get me going, because at that time it was a really steep curve getting into the game. Was subbed for about 6 to 12 months after which I thought the game started to get repetitive and I lost interest in playing, but still followed since my friend was heavily into it, so much so, that he has 2 accounts which payed for themselves through blueprint crafting. I still think it's one of the best MMO's out there.

Honestly I can see why a lot of people disagree, but at the end of the day someone like you needs to say this shit, and I respect you for it.

Do people that are trying to discredit this video actually realize that this is an evaluation for applicants to a higher end guild? This isn't about catering to fun, casual, family or RL friends guilds. He isn't telling you that every guild should be run like this, he's giving you insight on how to run a guild for actual progress in current higher end content.
I'll admit, some is take it or leave it (in the sense of personal preference), but quite a bit of this is very literal for anyone that wants even the most friendly of guilds to stand the test of time.
Drama whores shouldn't be in any guild wanting to raid, as it wastes your time, and that of the rest of your guild. The same goes for loot whores, guild hoppers, extreme assholes, unreliable players and general assholes using anonymity as a mask to be stupid and waste your guild's time in whatever it is you want to be doing in the game.
Remember, even if you're not into cutting edge progression, disruptive players easily ruin guilds and good friendships, as well as raiding and pvp (regardless of scale).
Top end guilds don't ruin the game, people being entitled and jumping to conclusions are ruining the game by forcing others to cater to their wants and desires. Do you want a college education? You have to earn it. Do you want into a high end raiding guild? You have to earn it as well, even if you think you're entitled to it by paying a subscription fee, you aren't going to get it for free on the backs of others players.
Everyone started somewhere, but you have to actually try to get better, you can't just expect to bypass everything that others had to earn the right to over the last ten plus years of the game.
Hate to break it to you, but high end guilds want things to cater to them as well :) I speak from experience at that. Also you yourself are stating entitlement for 10+ years of playing. I've got 13 years of wow under my belt, I seek no entitlement from new or old. Your statement kinda was counter productive in and of itself.
Never said that I had ten years of experience giving me entitlement, I simply said that people can't bypass what the old guard had to earn over the last ten plus years of raiding. That doesn't mean you need ten or more years of raiding history, it just means that people that have been raiding for years will have a much better shot at the high end of raiding in WoW, the same as a person with years of management or trade-skill experience will have the edge on getting a job over some fresh out of high-school kid.
Citing that high end guilds want things to cater to them in the realm of applicants is what my post was about, I fail to see how it was counter productive. You have rights, so do other people. You have wants, so do other people.
Reading through comments makes me think most people didnt even watch the video. You don't recruit someone who can press buttons in a sequence. Everyone can do that. You recruit someone who will not create conflict in your guild. You recruit based on the people you have in the guild. People with similar interests and similar attitudes tend to get along with each other a lot more than different people, therefore creating friendships.
Pretty much I've met some really nice people in my years, and they sucked. Met some assholes and they were fantastic players. Met some nice folks and were incredible. As long as there isn't guild drama, you don't want the entire guild full of skittles of the same color and look like clones. Because then if you enter someone who isn't a skittle, they quickly become an outsider, lonewolf, etc. And then leave because they feel left out and 99.9% of times, they are because your mentality.
About the dislexia and grammar bit....all he was trying to say is that if you can't communicate with team members effectively then that's a liability to the rest of the raid. For those needing a real world example I have one for you. I'm a lead machinist for an aerospace company in the Midwest. A Vietnamese crew chief had brought his brother in law in to train with him a few months ago and low and behold was moved to a different area of the shop. It was then made my task to train this employee on the machines in my area. This employee grasps the basic concepts of how A machine works but with the language barrier he will never be a true machinist. Is this the guy you want building the aircraft parts that will be installed on the aircraft you will be flying on? I think not. Communication is key.
First asmongold video i ever watched when i switched from primarily casuual pvp to semi hardcore pve in wow. This video opened my eyes to this aspect of the community and changed my views on the game forever. Thanks man.

This type of guild is a niche. Much like any intensely competitive teams in other games they need to be able to rely on a team which doesn't simply show up at random and won't let them down(for whatever reason). There are plenty of more casual guilds who still do end game content. You might not get there first, or even second, but if you're good enough it'll happen eventually.
So if you think this guy is an asshole, don't join the guild. Find a guild who fits your style and enjoy yourself instead of expecting him to change for you.
I am glad I became one of the "5%"ers, 16, started raiding in tot and was absolute shit looking at logs and old videos I made of my first few raids and now I'm one of the most valuable dps in my raid. Not trying to sound cocky but, hey.
Just become the recruitment Officer off my Mythic raiding guild after a few people left and i found replacements and started taking extra rolls, this is very helpful.

Great video, but the finding people irl seems a bit excessive to me. (finding their facebook, ip address etc) Do you really feel that part is essential?
95% of the time no, I added it because it's a technique that people can use that I've never heard brought up or talked about before. I think the last time I even did that was at the first tier of MoP.

I have played since Vanilla.
I have been in causal guilds, wich for me mean that real life come first.
I have been in raidguilds, wich for me mean a guild that want to progress.
I have been in guilds that sometimes are one of this and sometimes is the other.
What has been the same in all guilds, with not 1 exception is that the founders and the officers made the rules. If I have been fine with the rules I have stayed, if not I have left.
I have never found a reason to argue with the recruiters, officers or GM about what they have excpected me to fulfill. They were the founders, they made the rules.
A raidingguild want to progress. The better the guild do in there progress, the more players want to join them. The amount of skill that is expected from you grove with the progress. I never expected me to have a special treatment in the guild because I been a member for years. I have always seen it as my own responsibilty to keep up with the progress and if I failed I haven´t blamed the RL to let someone else take my place. As a guildmember i saw the progress as the important goal. As it was the goal.
With progress, the players that want to join the guild scale up, and with that come both possibility to progress even more and also the risk to get problems.
Ofc it´s not feeling good to know that the recruiter look you up all over, so to say.
But hey, this is internet, don´t we all look up evrything. We should be used to that by now, that internet is not our private photoalbum in the shelf.
So why getting upset. I should as a recruiter be more upset if I let someone join, that I after some weeks can see have lied about pretty much evrything essential in the application.
I like that comment. You sound quite like-minded to Asmongold. It's such a pain that people can't stop sperging and shifting the blame so it's refreshing to see it.
The best point in this video is to emphasizing how a recruiter/guild leader is a responsibility rather than a privilege . This is what a good guild leader/recruiter has to keep in mind all the time.
We're on the extreme edge of how couples can work in our guild to the point that they still work together even through a divorce. No drama, no issues, nothing. It's very strange but works out in the end.
The guild essentially imploded when the couples became extremely clique-ish with one of our officers and would set up their own events with pugs over the guild then turned on the guild and quit. Our main tank and healer since TBC. We couldn't recover after we lost a lot of our roster in Warlords.
Now I don't even raid. Just broke my interest.

@@FIREBALLINbg To be fair it was less of them being the problem and more the officer who was a snake in the grass and continuously pushed all the right buttons to end up in that position.
Since TBC to Warlords they were an integral part of the guild and never created any issues so it's just one of those unfortunate circumstances where it only took one person to bring the whole thing down and, after he did, he was never heard of or seen again on the server.

One thing: Aren't you afraid that new applicants actually see the stuff you just mentioned? I mean, your fanbase is growing and I bet there are people thinking "Man, I wanna raid with that guy". Nah I'm not worried about that, I'm the one who thought all of this stuff up, if I need to, I can think of more. And yeah dude a lot of people in RL view WoW in the same way they look at weed where if they know someone who smokes weed and that person doesn't do anything or is lazy, they assume everyone who smokes weed is lazy, same with how they look at WoW.

God, i'm watching this video and this is like some top end guild stuff like method. I myself have been in a few heroic raiding guilds and mostly it has just been a vent interview and that determines personality, age (off of the maturity of conversation), and then off of a trial period of a couple weeks. I mean i guess some guilds need this and others don't. However, great video and keep up the awesome content.

Hey Asmongold, I have to agree with alot of the topics you brought up here. If people have a desire to have a hardcore/semi-hardcore guild that gets somewhere you need to actually be smart on your members you choose to have with you. ESPECIALLY the couples/package deal, when I ran my own guild that posed ALOT of problems because one will do good and one will do bad and if you kick the under performing one the good one will be pissed an possibly leave. Now as someone who no longer wants to lead and is joining another guild with a friend as a package deal, it would be nice to join together of course but if he doesn't start showing up or is under performing I do expect that they have to deal with the problem by themselves, but that sometimes can put strains on me because then guilds can start asking where is he or wonder if I'm going to leave if they remove him. It's a game where there are guilds for everyone, and being smart about who you pick will make you more successful at whatever your goal is.

In short, dont get ppl under 18 cause they are not in control of their life,dont get ppl who finished highschool cause they might wanna take vacations,dont get ppl who got in college,dont get college graduates cause they might wanna take vacations,dont get ppl without a job cause they might find one,dont get ppl with a job cause they wont have enough time,dont get women cause they will get pregnant and not have time to play .So this leaves us with ppl above 60 years old but nowhere close to 70 cause they might die soon and newborns cause anyway they dont do much with their lifes.

Hey Asmon o/ I hope you take the time to read this and answer because I have a few questions for an expert like you. :)
I'm going to separate this into different groups per question for ease of access
Let me start with who I am, I'm a 16 year old World of Warcraft player, according to your video my age group has issues committing to raid times because we go by our parents/school, this is entirely valid and I'm not disputing this. But I have a few questions on how to become an experienced raider while a lot of better guilds really won't be looking into my demographic. (keep in mind through this that I started playing in Cataclysm so while not being a veteran I still have at least played the game for quite a while and have a vast knowledge of the games aspects)
1. With it being hard for me to commit to raid times, how should I go about joining a raiding guild? Should I look for some more casual people or even do pugs?
2. I'm not extremely experienced, I really haven't done any "hardcore" raiding ever so again, how do you recommend I get into the field? Just gearing and doing pugs as much as possible? The only issue with pugs is the fact that it's not that easy to always get into a group. During SoO I only did pugs and got myself to 565 ilvl, I feel like being in a raiding environment would have gotten me geared faster and more since there were some weeks I couldn't even find a group.
3. My friends and I (2 tanks and 1 other dps) have been considering forming a raiding guild/team, should we avoid this because of how young we are compared to the player base and how weird leadership positions are when the person you are questioning in an application/interview process is like 10+ years older than you?
4. Do you recommend that I focus on being more patient and just try to pug (or join a more casual guild that raids on a more moderate level [ex. not mythic]) through WoD to build up raiding experience and apply for a "hardcore" raiding guild next xpac? Because when I was trying to get into raiding (I PvP'd most of Cata) my cousin told me that Dragon Soul was extremely terrible and boring (which it is) and to not even get tangled up in it.

1. You should either find a raid guild that fits your schedule, or do pugs. I didn't start raiding on schedule until I was almost in college.
2. You want to make sure that you take deliberate steps up the ladder. Try to join pugs that have killed bosses that you haven't, always try to be improving your experience and gear to the point where you can get into any pug you want.
3. Sometimes that's an issue, but for the most part people are pretty cool about that. As long as you don't act like you're 16, the odds are people won't treat you like you are.
4. You shouldn't have to wait until after WoD to get into a good guild, I went from being in a guild that could barely clear Karazhan to a guild that had Black Temple on farm overnight because I got lucky. Try to recognize opportunities and take advantage of them.

I think people are failing to realise that this video represents the methods of one of the top progression guilds. They need high standards, and they certainly won't recruit anyone that can potentially cause problems. Key word being 'potentially'. So many people are salty at how extreme some of these methods are, and some are, but they have to be to get the best players they can.

I know this video is old, but you're not wrong in your process at all, I mean your success as a raider is proof. I am way to casual to ever be a raider on Asmongold's scale, but I am not shocked by an extreme vetting process. These are guys you need to have your back and know their positions and the whole mchanics of a fight. You're not trying to recruit Joe Smith, you're trying to recruit the finest with types of minds that are wired for success. I respect the process and think it isn't being an asshole, success is a business and that business is a brutal, time consuming, and rage inducing and you need the right men and women for the job. Bravo sir, great explaination, you're an extremely intelligent gamer.
How to raid: install DBM, use a cast sequence macro pulled from the internet, don't stand in fire. You don't need a complicated recruiting process to ensure people in your raid are capable of doing that.

It's such a fun to read all the moralistic stuff in here :D So many people whining about Asmongold being douchebag.. Come on, he said that it's the best method. Not the most kind method. It's meant to be effective and that's what comes with it. If you wanna success greatly in raiding you need to have good people, which you can rely on and which you know can do the stuff the right way.. It's nothing more.

The best players are college students, the unemployed and couples. College students play video games hard. Am I lying? The top two members in my guild always organizing events, groups, etc are freshmen College students going to college for the first time. The unemployed have nothing else to do but play video games. The third best player of my guild is a recently retired electrician. Couples know each others game style really well and usually have great gear and experience because its something they have been doing for a long time together and probably even met gaming.

Will you ever consider someone who was a high end PvPer i.e Gladiator and Hero of The Alliance/Horde as a potential applicant as someone who wants to get into raiding? I've seen a pretty high correlation in the past couple years of really good PvPers being good raiders since they almost inevitably have great awareness. They also tend to have a sense of game mechanics and class mechanics, but on the downside they also tend to be (mostly but not always) epeen assholes. Thoughts?
This is sometimes true, we also had a 2xR1 glad rogue die to heroic Nefarian weekly because he couldn't use cloak of shadows or feint. I am always hesitant to recruit pvpers because most are self-centered, selfish, and immature.
These tactics are useful in life in general.

Hi. Intresting video. I'm in guild with 4/7 myph for now, and have a question - what you can advise for guild like mine? We got like 10-15 ppl who raid 5 days per week(we raiding 5/7) and ~10 other who raid whenver they want(sometimes they come, sometimes not). So problem is - we dont have ppl for raid(or we have ppl, but they dont know how to play), i trying find some, but after some days spam in chat/forums + wowprogress, i didnt find anyone. I know i'm doing smth wrong, hope for your help -) Btw i'm on horde server, we got LOT of ppl on it.

It think people younger than 18 years are fine, atleast for me, I am 16 and I am leading a succesful raiding guild. I understand what you meant with "They don't have their life in control", but I think that if 18y- really want to raid, they'll make time for it.

Good video. I do disagree on one point though. Hating all the guild drama does not mean you are necessarily causing drama.
My old 10-man had broken up (people going to college, getting a job, quitting after getting bored to hell from raiding Trial of the Crusader), so a friend got me in a another 10-man for ICC. The only condition: I had to help their 25-man as well.
The people in the 10-man were nice enough, but the 25 man was filled with people at each other's throat. After a while, I got tired of people arguing and bitching, and when player A and player B went at it, I put them both on my ignore list, and I muted them on vent. I eventually ended up having 17 out of 25 people ignored, including the range dps officer and the loot master. It was ok though, the addon he used to give out loot still worked.
The raid leader got word of this and asked me to reconsider my ignore policy, at least for the range dps officer (probably the biggest jerk of them all) to which I simply replied "no, and if it is a problem I won't raid anymore". I was the top dps in both his 10 and 25 man (Marks hunter hardcapped in armor penetration ftw), so he had to deal with it. I didn't want to switch guild because our 10 man was the best on the server.
When Cata came, to his credit, he actually put his foot down: no more arguing and bitching. It lasted two weeks and people just started again. I decided to just go ahead and find another guild at that point. So I left because I could not stand guild drama which I was not involved in. Or if I was, I don't know cause almost everyone was on ignore... But as you point out, I am probably in that 5% exception

Being 15 and mature enough to not be a dumbass and actually be cool with people in my guild, there's a fairly decent way to get into a guild. Find a guild that raids on weekends or Friday / Saturday. Mine raids Saturday and Sunday mornings and runs alts on Sunday nights. I do all 3 raids without issues and I'm passing high school without issues. Sure, not everyone is going to be this kind of person and a lot of people are really stupid when they're under 18, but I'm part of that exception. If you are too, don't let that stop you from finding a guild.
I know this video is old, but I am a Ret Pally in wod currently raiding LFR. I have raided flex in mop and I want to start doing progression. I would consider myself more mature than my generation, however I do have a nagging family. I really want to start progression raiding. What do you suggest I do Asmongold?

Is the guild the top priority or is the individual the top priority? Are you looking for serious friends that will hang and play with you for as long as possible or just a great team? I think you make your point pretty clear that you were looking to better the guilds chances at success and with that as the goal chose to go full tilt for real deal players and not seek to make buddies. Your choice is yours and no one elses and other guilds with different goals can adjust and adapt to suit their situation. Such is life ...deal or walk away. /salute Asmongold
As a person whose played wow for since closed beta of vanilla. Who raid led in a top 5 u.s. guild for several years. If you are needing a video to evaluate applicants, you should ask yourself. Are you a born leader, or a follower. I could shred apart this video, because its one mans opinion. And its just that, an opinion for what may or may not work for him. And thats the problem. You set aside your own feelings, agenda, etc. Basically its like trying to find the right puzzle piece to finish a puzzle where as several puzzles may have gotten mixed up together. They are either going to work, or not work. You should treat the application process like you are human resources. A piece of paper (application) only goes so far. Get that person infront of you, speak to them on mumble/ts/ventrilo. And ask them questions. Get to talk to them. Trial them out one day in an alt raid, or a main raid if you got a spot for trials. And see how they handle mechanics, a task in the raid you give them for that day, etc. Its not complicated, you just have to be open minded and an actual leader. Case closed.
So, the only people allowed in the guild are the people that are going to raid? Is it true that good players don't need "training", they already know the raid? The only way I can see how this would work is that if you get with a "bad" guild that allows anyone; learn the raid; then apply for a "good" guild. Or LFR. Constantly making exceptions is actually rude to other people in most forms of social groups and in this case WoW, especially when acceptance into the social group is based off objective accomplishments, because everyone else busted their ass to get there, and now they're stuck in somewhat easy content from having someone who isn't as progressed as everyone else.
PreachGaming has made this statement many times, so I don't see what's objectively immoral of not accepting applicants that "suck" in a hardcore or semi-hardcore guild. Do you see any high profession-based career accept applicants that haven't even finished high school or ever started college? No. Because that's highly offensive to the other workers who went to get like Masters, or have decades of work experience to get a career they love, and now some pleb who can hardly tell the difference between opinion and fact is making collaboration difficult.
People need to seriously stop being social justice warriors and White Knights because that's not how the real world works. Unfairness is part of the human condition and part of society, inequality is somewhat necessary to maintain social order. If you don't understand why inequality is somewhat decent since it's been a part of humanity even before we were Modern Homo Sapiens, then don't reply.

Zack, I'm 16, and I've been a top end-tier raider ever since SoO. Yes, I've played in a lot top guilds as well, such as: Prime, Fang, Innominatium Eu tho. But now I've a home in the guild called RnG - Kazzak EU, I'm staballized in that guild since the start of October, and that guild suites my RL a lot. It's all about having your life under control in a young age, while maintaining a Raiding-"job". :)

You intentionally deceive people, trying to convince them you trust them to run background checks on peoples real lives for the sake of your gaming pleasure. ***** Perhaps the top raiding guilds, but the top PvP guilds don't work like this. We care if you can PvP, and couldn't care less about cyber stalking you. We don't deceive members to run background checks because what happens when they are living AFK is none of our concern, and we have fun, and kill dynamic, unscripted players, and sometimes we die to unscripted players. Its all a part of the game. I guess the problem I see is being in a guild where my real life is subject to some neck beards scrutiny is not fun, and games are not about killing dragons, or even players for that matter, it's about having fun and nothing else. No one in the real world gives two shits you got realm first on Hanz and Franz.
***** You're free to call it "research", but my Facebook says nothing of my ability to pay attention to mechanics, gear, attendance or for that matter anything of relevance to raiding. All social media will tell you that's relevant to raiding is if I have the ability to hit keys on a keyboard, and really it doesn't show that when you consider that a lot of Facebook posts are generated from phones.
That said I've always used a separate email for gaming accounts and never given a real email to anyone from a game, or discussed details of my real life. Its a game and meant to be fun. Guilds that recruit players that nobody knows generally have much bigger problems than can be solved by cyber stalking potential members.

What should you do if your guild made their logs private because of poaching attempts and they would get pissed off if you started logging on your own and posting them as public? My dilemma right now.
Upload them under a different name, get a few logs show the guild you're apping to then as soon as they see them, make your logs private and say it wasn't you when your guild asks.

+idk1 and Btw sometimes combining carebears and assholes actually works in a strange harmony and creates some variation in your guild, especially if the carebear is also among the officers.
It's nice to have someone who thinks slightly differently and can contribute different viewpoints among the officers. Ofc not an extreme carebear but someone who is like the "harsh guild mother" , but with a soft side. This way , they are also a strong social connecting point and mediator between different members of the guild. (i'm talking about semi-hardcore or hardcore guilds, not cesspool guilds). Otherwise it would be like bad cop , bad cop and that can create problems if there is not a single good cop around. Carebears can basically make excellent social officers and sometimes evaporate drama before it gets out of hand

As a 17-yrs old i can totaly agree with the fact that under 18 ppl are bad for raiding as they just leave cuz parents and stuff.I myself got a father who understands when i raid

There are addons to see who did what. Who used the correct abilities at the right time who was mitigating undodgable damage correctly who was dodging dodgeable damage
