I've always loved Store Mounts, up until just recently. I always thought of them as a nice alternative for players who don't get nearly as much play time to farm rare mounts, so this is their way to get something with style. Now it's becoming a thing where they create the most fashionable mount they can think of, and restrict it behind a $25 pay wall. Instead of making their brand new mount the reward from the next "Glory of the X Raider", they shoot for this. Disappointing Blizzard. Very upsetting.
HONESTLY the most ridiculous ones are the garrison mounts from 6.2. seriously.. there is a guy next to my fucking command table who sells me a boar and a clefthoof for 20k gold each! LIKE WTF! WHY?! :D

WoW token has been introduced recently so rich players are able to throw money at blizzard to get these mounts while a none-paying player will have to actually play the game and grind some gold to buy these.

See I cant even blame Blizz, they hit the jackpot with the mounts and they know it, I blame the players that buy these things so they can be special little snowflakes, the most anti-consumer people are the consumers themselves. The last straw for me was when I earned 9999 giant bones for a simple raptor reskin, not even a new raptor model just another fucking old troll mount raptor while the bat mount people have been asking for was added around that same time.

Diavolo222 They do give us good content, mounts are cosmetic regardless of how cool they look, if they started gating raids, or battlegrounds behind a paywall you would have a point, but the reality is the blame for these mounts goes mainly to the players that keep buying the damn things. If you are seriously implying WoD lack of content is because of store mounts you need to take another look at it.

I fully agree! Back in the day you could see a super rare, cool mount and you were like amazed and aspired to acquire it. Making the mounts purchasable in a shop almost completely removes the value of it, to me. The second reason it sucks is that everyone will be using it and it's no longer anything special or cool. They do it for money but I think they'll lose money in the long run as the magic of the game is lessened and players get tired of shopping items rather than working for them.

Timewalker JP even! TL;DR Timewalker dungeons will give currency for new mounts and toys.
I used to be a mount collector when I played WoW. For a long time, I did a bunch of grindy bullshit to get every mount I could. But suddenly it dawned on me. Most of those mounts I didn't even use, so I realigned myself, I instead only wanted all the rare mounts. I got really lucky too. Pureblood firehawk, fiery warhorse, mimiron's head, onyxian drake, scepter of azj-aqir, azure drake. That's just my favourites, It became more of a matter of what I didn't have. I only got mounts that looked cool because that made me happy, seeing them drop, knowing I'd grasped what I wanted. But then the store mount thing happen. I turned my nose up in disgust at mounts that I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, looked better than the ones I had, going against everything I'd said I'd strive towards. I'd try and go on about how much it really disgusts me but I've just lost the words. It just makes me really sad.
You're literally right on the money with this Asmongold. I've even bought a few of these when they went on sale. And I got lucky when someone offered a couple in chat for gold, I made sure to add them to my account before paying, only to have to deal with Blizzard as the scammer would later cancel the charges for the mounts, leaving me to lose my hard earned gold. They had a policy on a window of charge where they would wait 24 hrs, but I said that's bullshit because they are creating a problem, and even though their GM told me I was screwed, I somehow kept my mounts. I have since informed anyone curious about such offers via trade not to bother and why. I consider mount collecting probably my favourite aspect of the game and have acquired 222 so far. But yeah, you really made a great case that they're done rewarding subs and are catering to people willing to shell out extra money. I think that's gonna end my sub, I was aiming for 250, and I know it's just a reskinned firehawk, but it was something cool. However, if they are showing how little they care with this blue heavenly cloud serpent for 300...well, that's just bullshit. I still hate the friggin' boars, they run so shitty. I'd rather they had less mounts overall, and kept the skins more unique. Also, I really laughed at your in game attempts to find the elusive mounts. You're super angry about store mounts yet you're not raging against Blizzard's faster expansion model. That seems strange to me. *BOTH* issues are pure cash-grabs. I *stupidly* supported the in-game store because I used to believe in the company. I used to trust that they cared about their playerbase... and so I bought store mounts (tossing them extra cash) as a *reward* of sorts. *NOW*, I realize that I only enabled Blizz to become the greedy monster they turned into. As a result, I *won't* be buying "Legion." I'm finally making my stand (which I should've done *long* ago). Perhaps you should consider turning your back on "Legion", too.
TortureVision I know that at least a few times I've discussed the faster expansion thing and I've made it pretty clear that I dislike it as well. The reason I haven't made an entire video about it is because the faster expansion release thing hasn't actually happened yet, the store mount thing is happening right now. I do plan on buying the new expansion though, even if it is shitty, I have no doubt that I'll probably get more gametime out of Legion than I would another game.
TortureVision WoD was a huge failure and I would consider it a good business decision to get off of that sinking ship as fast as possible. If Legion gets the same treatment, that will be something different. Blizzard has said multiple times even in WotLK that they were trying to push out faster expansions but it's never actually happened so it's never been a concern. I have no doubt that Legion will be released prematurely and will probably have issues, but I will save my criticisms for those issues when they happen

HOWEVER if the new content is crap, rushed and buggy fuck no i won't be happy about it, although the stuff in legion is looking good so far we will never know until we actually play the game. To be fair, while there are a lot of reskins, there are also quite a few unique models in Warlords that you can obtain. Alliance players can get an Iron Horde Armored Ellek from the Trading Post.
mounts are handed out like sweets now. Remember when they would be extremely rare 5man/raid drops. Reputations (skyguard/netherwing) raid achievements in each tier, costly professions. Sure at each rep/raid tier achievement there would be multiple color choices, but the models were unique.
Wow, this has been festering for six years. Eating candy was usually saved for special occasions in my house. I wouldn't even blow all my allowance money on the local drugstore which sold candy to us when I was a kid. You get the same rush when it comes to playing video games in an arcade. I never lived in a city with easy access to an arcade where you could blow your quarters on playing a game for hours. My grandma would spoil us with all the candy and soda we could ask for because she picked it up cheap from those dollar stores and Walmart.
The Boar problem is even worse considering that it's a reskin/remodel of a skeleton/animation from MOP, which is why it looks so absolutely ridiculous when it moves.. I got my first Boar mount in 6.2 with the Fel Boar and I could not believe how utterly terrible it was, I still can't believe it. They are just churning out tonnes of garbage for the sake of having lots of mounts, regardless of quality. I remember when I got my Frostwyrm in WOTLK and it was an epic moment, now we have to pay dat cash or ride one of our 15 different reskin/recolour mounts.. Even the new Talbuk on steroids is pasted on to the original from TBC and looks fucking ridiculous when it runs.
I would be fine with store mount aslong as they put them ingame (re-color version) like a patch later after the store mount released This way the ppl that willing to pay can have a unique mount for a few months and the rest will be able to get it at a later time. To play the game, you have to : - Buy the game - Buy every expansion - Buy subscription every month - You want to have unique mounts ? You have to buy it - You want to have unique battle pets ? You have to buy it (I honestly don't care about that but maybe people do) - You want to change your faction ? You have to pay for it, and for EVERY character - You want to change your look ? You have to pay for it - You want to transfer your character on another server ? You have to pay for it, and for EVERY character - You want to change your race ? You have to pay for it That's the problem here, it isn't just that there are store mounts, it is that everything else is paying. I mean, paying for mounts and to change my race, that's what I did a long time ago on private servers. On FUCKING PRIVATE SERVERS. I have a friend who transfered his character on a new server recently and he wanted to switch from Horde to Alliance. For two of his characters, he payed 90€. Even me, I want to change faction for a character, and transfer a character or two to another server, but I already pay the game to play every month, it's just getting too expensive. And after that, I have friends wondering why I don't buy a new computer ... In MoP, at least we had new mounts to get with the reputations.
I think a fair solution would be to have some unique mounts in the Blizzard store and some in game. Like for completing the "Glory of the Hero" meta achievement, you would get a great mount. This is tough achievement to get anyway. Also almost all of the cool battle pets are also in the Blizzard store as well.
The biggest smack in the face was how the Laughing Skull rep mount was a reskinned wolf and not the Grinning Reaver. They should of at least given Laughing Skull rep a non flying version.
Good Video Asmongold, and don't forget about the mount from AQ40 which took the entire server monthes to unlock and then was only obtainable by a select few. Now it, as mentioned in this video, is on my store. The most rare mount from vanilla is now obtainable by anyone with $25. Really makes me mad man.
What's sad is that the people defending the store mounts are the ones that enable Blizzard to keep doing this. And I do agree that perhaps the most ridiculous thing is the fact that mounts that blatantly look like they should be rep mounts are store mounts.

I let my subscriptions run out the other day because I was just bored with the game and I'm planning on resubbing when Legion comes out, but man if they added those cool unique mounts into the game instead of the store in these slow periods that would be enough to keep me subscribed through the expansion down time. Instead of one 25$ payment that would give them another 6-8 20$ payments.
To be honest the best mounts in the game (IN MY OPINION) are: -Black Qiraji Battle Tank -Merciless/vengeful/brutal Gladiator armored drake -Swift spectral tiger. All these mounts are BC/vanilla mounts. All unobtainable besides the Tiger, fucking annoying that players duped the cards. They are rare but I still think theres too many of them. Spent 600,000g on mine :). These mounts don't have the most updated textures, however because of how hard they are to acquire it wins. I heard a few players use a program that can change the clients view gear/transmog/race/mounts and apparently you can morph your mount into blizz-store mounts for free. Maybe players should rebel by doing that.
The worst thing about store mounts is how quickly they become irrelevant, just when do you see people riding store mounts?... almost never. When you make a mount obtainable with money instead of effort everyone buys it, and it becomes so common nobody uses it.
glad im not a mount fanatic.. all i need is my sandstone drake and im happy, but excellent point, if i was a mount fanatic i would be completely outraged as well, imagine if they did it for pvp, having to buy pvp gear for 5$ or a full set of it for 50$, i would rage quit...
I believe the one non store mount in 6.2 that is unique compared to other non store mounts is the hellfire citadel mount, that seems to be the only one.
I don't have a serious problem with the collector/deluxe edition offering a unique model. I wasn't, (as many) too upset about the store mounts a few expansions back because there were good mounts available outside of the store and the store mounts were few and far between. However the current state is really not acceptable, we get almost as many unique mount models in-game as are available in the store, disgusting.
What you may have missed is that both boars and river beasts are actually using the same animation sheet as the dire horns. So basically they are both skin models with a tweaked skeleton model. The rapid running animation is a result of a shorter stride.
I get why people have an issue with it but I don't think this many cool and new mounts would be made if they weren't in the shop. Resources would be dedicated elsewhere. The mount and pet shop probably funds a few jobs. I have some disposable income, the mounts look freaking awesome and there are lots of other cool mounts in the game. I don't have an issue with it.
The best thing the community can do is actually post on the Blizzard website as well as submit suggestions from in-game. What most people end up doing is ranting pointlessly on sites Blizzard is not watching directly. What does win, is pointing out to blizzard, that they already have the tech/code for the mounts, and re-skins with small animation changes does not equal the cost of real world money being paid. they need to make the mounts more then anything you can get in-game.. For example(s): Riding at higher speeds. All models have a repair, t-mog or bank option. Add storage on the mount. They are more interactive with the world (run "enemies" over). PvP - people can loot money from your mount if you are just standing there AfK (one time). All of the above is 100% doable and I have already submitted this to Blizz several times because the imbalance needs to stop; they are better then that.
The issue is that for every person who hates the system there is someone throwing money at them. That is the issue with the gaming industry as a whole currently. The store mount that killed me the most was Armored Bloodwing as someone whose favorite race is troll I was like finally a bat mount too bad it is $25.
At first, the store mounts did not bother me because even though they most likely looked better than the mounts in-game, there were still some cool and unique mounts to get via playing the game, but I can see how can this get really frustrating in WoD..
And btw.As someone who's into 3D modeling now I can tell you that creating completely new mounts for wow really isn't that big of a deal if you put it into perspective. You could literally pay one guy to create an awesome new unique 3D model with textures and make him churn out a great new 3D model a week or every two weeks(with the amount of skill required and workflow efficiency to work at blizzard as a designer I think that's very possible). Now obviously the mount wouldn't have any animation but creating a skeleton and movements is very doable if you have the kind of resources these guys have. If I were in control of directing WoW, I would definitely try to pull guys aside to constantly work on and create unique and new things to implement in the game and keep the playerbase more happy. And I mean free stuff,not cash items.
+Steven Jones yeah making skeletons for a premade 3d model will take a day of work. And actually making the animation frame by frame takes a couple of days if you want it perfect tbh that's one person doing it especially with their team they could make 10 mounts in a week or two fairly easy work if you know what you're doing
I've noticed that couldn't be asked to get a single mount in WoD. Now let's compared that to MoP, where I got the Klaxxi scorpion mount, The Shadow Pan tiger, the Cloud Serpent and the Grand Armored Gryphon. Except for the Cloud Serpent where you had to earn it how to train your dragon style, Other unique mounts could be rep grinned trough 5 man dungeons and doing their own respective dailies. Basically I had different options to up the reputation and there was always a sense of progression. Imagine the only way for players to get a Cloud Serpent or Grand Armored Gryphon was via the store for $30,- Not only does it removes the mount as earn able content, but it scraps a whole daily hub to try and earn the new mount. Perhaps there is a daily hub, but I don't care if I can't earn a great looking mount for it.
First we pay for the actual game, then pay for all the expansion, then to even play the game we have to pay sub fee, THEN we have to pay boost to lvl 100 to play with friends, then we have to pay to get a cool new mount. Everything is pay pay pay to get stuff nowadays. Before you had to work to get a cool unique mount
we should have unique mount's available ingame and then recollours that would not make sence ingame, put them in the store for people wanting wieard colloured vertions of their mounts for transmog's etc. also, put that ellk mount (magic moose) at the end of a 3 month daily quest rep, i'll be there every single day untill i get it!
Sadly I don't think these models will make it into the game as mounts, without getting it from the store. Same goes for MoP CE mount, and all other shop mounts. Chances are that the only way to get the moose, is from the store, even when Legion launches :(
Funny to think that if the Ashes of Al'ar were to be added into the game now in 2015, it would probably be a store mount. And since the players will need an ingame mount to compensate, they can have another boar.
i think the way star wars did their companions in the market place was the right way. Basically you bought the companion in the maketplace which gave u a questline to complete before you got it. Something like that would be a cool way to add mounts in wow and while they would still be a cash grab at least they would have a reason for being unique and could be a fun quest chain if done right (im not saying greenfire scale just a short but well done series).

Well a lot of the faction mounts are just recolours (alliance/horde/panda). The ones that stand out are usually rare drops (Ashes) or the store mounts. It's true that the value of the store mounts would decrease if similar alternative were available, but having the mount basically pulled from in game rewards just for a profit is lame. The only one I bought was the fey dragon when it was part of a charity promotion. Hopefully they don't do the same with artifact skins/colours...
I admit i purchased the celestial steed back in the day, because i thought it would suit my mage toon. I will never buy another mount from the shop because there is simply no prestige in owning them.

The most annoying part of this is we JUST had a patch with tons of reputations put in that reward mounts... so this easily could have been one of those rewards.

I agree with you 100% on this. A few days ago I was browsing MMO-Champion's forums, something I would not recommend. I saw someone had posted a thread speculating that Blizzard might sell artifact weapon skins. The sad thing is, that the majority of the people commenting in the thread were saying either that they wouldn't care if Blizzard did that, or that they would be happy. Pretty much the only excuse they give is that its 'optional'. Tons of the comments said things like "Great I love being able to pay money to look cool without having to put time into the game". The forum is also full of people who literally want raiding removed from the game.
I feel your pain. I just don't buy the store stuff. I WANT the store stuff, but they can talk a long walk off a short pier if they think they're getting any more from me than they already are.
You make a really good point that I overlooked. I would be Mindblown if they didn't add skins for your artifact weapons that you could purchase with rl money that are unobtainable in game.
Just look at mounts like Mimiron's Head and Ashes of Al'Ar, those mounts came out before store mounts why are those mounts so much more rare and respected then store mounts? It's not because they look cooler then store mounts. It's because THEY ARE NOT PURCHASEABLE.
I appreciate what you have to say about how if you buy a store mount, you stick out and look cooler. But in my opinion, I would respect someone more if I saw them on a rep grind mount. I would say low drop mounts and Store mounts are on par for how much I appreciate them, because good luck getting the drop mount, and store mounts can just be bought. Rep grind mounts are the ones that people actively log in everyday to work towards. Just imo, tho
I got really excited to see the moose mount at first, I thought it was a concept for a rep reward for Legion. As a mount collector, I find it incredibly depressing that they would put something as nice as that behind a pay wall, but hey, we can hope for a terrible, less pretty recolor maybe, right? Honestly, I was never angry about the other mounts, I was more annoyed than anything, but this one just really pisses me off for some reason.
I wish I got the feeling Blizzard still cared about WoW. It seems more and more like they just wanna make as much money as possible before the game tanks. Instead of like fixing the game? Idk maybe that is a bit off base but it's how I feel.

Krydda You're missing the point. Blizz is keeping the good mounts for the store, and giving shitty mounts in game, to encourage, or hustle the idiots into buying them.
In theory Blizzard could follow the footsteps of Guild Wars 2 and go Free to Play and create more things for the store and use that as revenue and still be making money out the ass. More mounts, more pets, services & even currency could be added there to replace the subscription based revenue that they have now. I remember a couple years back they teased the holy colouring for Shamans and the cosmetic changes for Druids. Little things like that could be sold there in lieu of subs.
I played other MMOs (Guild Wars II and Archeage); both are supposedly free to play (you buy GW II once). But this allows only very basic play. I ended up being forced to subscribe to Archeage plus buying game stuff from both companies. With regard to cost, my experience is that Blizzard is by far the most player friendly of the three. I pay a sub. fee and I buy a pet or a mount from the store from time to time, and all this is costing me less an third of what I ended up paying monthly to Archeage (which I stopped playing) and continue to pay to GW II.
They didn't even change the animation of the boars. All they did was slow it down a little. While not even doing the same to the riverbeasts, that still gotta go fast! It's just sad that the ''run animation'' is just the walking animation sped up. Pretty much the only mount in WoD that has a good animation is the Gronnling. At least none of the other mounts look cooler than them.
Funny.. Here I used to think (and justify that) our subscription covered the cost of play and all the new content being free as the tradeoff.. Now I really can't see why we are paying a subscription anymore, when they have store-only items (like tons of FREE mmos) and get fewer "free" patches (WOD speaks for itself) with the plan to have more frequent paywalls labeled as "expansions". Blizzard has gone downhill with corporate bullshit the last few years. It's frustrating to see this process because I love the Warcraft Universe like no other game universe.

There are the old TCG mounts that are easily worth 1000$+ and pretty much all of them are unique. At least you can buy these for 25$ anytime you want, and they are cheaper and cool.

WoW token has been introduced recently so rich players are able to throw money at blizzard to get these mounts while a none-paying player will have to actually play the game and grind some gold to buy these.

No matter how innovative and pretty a mount is, if it costs actual money, it's literally garbage. Meaning I would Never, ever ride it. It's a shame, really is. Things like this will only push me towards not purchasing Legion, and stopping for good.

See I cant even blame Blizz, they hit the jackpot with the mounts and they know it, I blame the players that buy these things so they can be special little snowflakes, the most anti-consumer people are the consumers themselves.
The last straw for me was when I earned 9999 giant bones for a simple raptor reskin, not even a new raptor model just another fucking old troll mount raptor while the bat mount people have been asking for was added around that same time.

I fully agree! Back in the day you could see a super rare, cool mount and you were like amazed and aspired to acquire it. Making the mounts purchasable in a shop almost completely removes the value of it, to me. The second reason it sucks is that everyone will be using it and it's no longer anything special or cool. They do it for money but I think they'll lose money in the long run as the magic of the game is lessened and players get tired of shopping items rather than working for them.
Back in my day i used to get mounts from raids and reputations, now by my credit card.
They could incentivise dungeons by adding cosmetic rewards such as mounts and pets. The dungeons would be ran for expansions upon expansions.

Timewalker JP even!
TL;DR Timewalker dungeons will give currency for new mounts and toys.

I used to be a mount collector when I played WoW. For a long time, I did a bunch of grindy bullshit to get every mount I could. But suddenly it dawned on me. Most of those mounts I didn't even use, so I realigned myself, I instead only wanted all the rare mounts. I got really lucky too. Pureblood firehawk, fiery warhorse, mimiron's head, onyxian drake, scepter of azj-aqir, azure drake. That's just my favourites, It became more of a matter of what I didn't have. I only got mounts that looked cool because that made me happy, seeing them drop, knowing I'd grasped what I wanted. But then the store mount thing happen. I turned my nose up in disgust at mounts that I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, looked better than the ones I had, going against everything I'd said I'd strive towards.
I'd try and go on about how much it really disgusts me but I've just lost the words. It just makes me really sad.

You're literally right on the money with this Asmongold. I've even bought a few of these when they went on sale. And I got lucky when someone offered a couple in chat for gold, I made sure to add them to my account before paying, only to have to deal with Blizzard as the scammer would later cancel the charges for the mounts, leaving me to lose my hard earned gold. They had a policy on a window of charge where they would wait 24 hrs, but I said that's bullshit because they are creating a problem, and even though their GM told me I was screwed, I somehow kept my mounts. I have since informed anyone curious about such offers via trade not to bother and why. I consider mount collecting probably my favourite aspect of the game and have acquired 222 so far. But yeah, you really made a great case that they're done rewarding subs and are catering to people willing to shell out extra money. I think that's gonna end my sub, I was aiming for 250, and I know it's just a reskinned firehawk, but it was something cool. However, if they are showing how little they care with this blue heavenly cloud serpent for 300...well, that's just bullshit. I still hate the friggin' boars, they run so shitty. I'd rather they had less mounts overall, and kept the skins more unique. Also, I really laughed at your in game attempts to find the elusive mounts. I *stupidly* supported the in-game store because I used to believe in the company. I used to trust that they cared about their playerbase... and so I bought store mounts (tossing them extra cash) as a *reward* of sorts.
*NOW*, I realize that I only enabled Blizz to become the greedy monster they turned into. As a result, I *won't* be buying "Legion." I'm finally making my stand (which I should've done *long* ago). Perhaps you should consider turning your back on "Legion", too.
TortureVision I know that at least a few times I've discussed the faster expansion thing and I've made it pretty clear that I dislike it as well. The reason I haven't made an entire video about it is because the faster expansion release thing hasn't actually happened yet, the store mount thing is happening right now.
I do plan on buying the new expansion though, even if it is shitty, I have no doubt that I'll probably get more gametime out of Legion than I would another game.

WoD was a huge failure and I would consider it a good business decision to get off of that sinking ship as fast as possible. If Legion gets the same treatment, that will be something different.
Blizzard has said multiple times even in WotLK that they were trying to push out faster expansions but it's never actually happened so it's never been a concern.
I have no doubt that Legion will be released prematurely and will probably have issues, but I will save my criticisms for those issues when they happen

On the other hand putting mounts which are completely new behind a pay wall is something i cant stand, if the game had a free to play model or buy to play fair enough but paying a subscription+box cost and also having to be blocked from getting the best mounts in-game and having to pay real money is a no go and i will never buy it, but people are just stupid and waste their money like that...good for them however i wont be part of it.

To be fair, while there are a lot of reskins, there are also quite a few unique models in Warlords that you can obtain. Alliance players can get an Iron Horde Armored Ellek from the Trading Post.
mounts are handed out like sweets now. Remember when they would be extremely rare 5man/raid drops. Reputations (skyguard/netherwing) raid achievements in each tier, costly professions. Sure at each rep/raid tier achievement there would be multiple color choices, but the models were unique.
Wow, this has been festering for six years. Eating candy was usually saved for special occasions in my house. I wouldn't even blow all my allowance money on the local drugstore which sold candy to us when I was a kid. You get the same rush when it comes to playing video games in an arcade. I never lived in a city with easy access to an arcade where you could blow your quarters on playing a game for hours. My grandma would spoil us with all the candy and soda we could ask for because she picked it up cheap from those dollar stores and Walmart.
The Boar problem is even worse considering that it's a reskin/remodel of a skeleton/animation from MOP, which is why it looks so absolutely ridiculous when it moves..
I got my first Boar mount in 6.2 with the Fel Boar and I could not believe how utterly terrible it was, I still can't believe it. They are just churning out tonnes of garbage for the sake of having lots of mounts, regardless of quality.
I remember when I got my Frostwyrm in WOTLK and it was an epic moment, now we have to pay dat cash or ride one of our 15 different reskin/recolour mounts.. Even the new Talbuk on steroids is pasted on to the original from TBC and looks fucking ridiculous when it runs.
I would be fine with store mount aslong as they put them ingame (re-color version) like a patch later after the store mount released
This way the ppl that willing to pay can have a unique mount for a few months and the rest will be able to get it at a later time.

To play the game, you have to :
- Buy the game
- Buy every expansion
- Buy subscription every month
- You want to have unique mounts ? You have to buy it
- You want to have unique battle pets ? You have to buy it (I honestly don't care about that but maybe people do)
- You want to change your faction ? You have to pay for it, and for EVERY character
- You want to change your look ? You have to pay for it
- You want to transfer your character on another server ? You have to pay for it, and for EVERY character
- You want to change your race ? You have to pay for it
That's the problem here, it isn't just that there are store mounts, it is that everything else is paying. I mean, paying for mounts and to change my race, that's what I did a long time ago on private servers. On FUCKING PRIVATE SERVERS.
I have a friend who transfered his character on a new server recently and he wanted to switch from Horde to Alliance. For two of his characters, he payed 90€.
Even me, I want to change faction for a character, and transfer a character or two to another server, but I already pay the game to play every month, it's just getting too expensive. And after that, I have friends wondering why I don't buy a new computer ...
In MoP, at least we had new mounts to get with the reputations.

I think a fair solution would be to have some unique mounts in the Blizzard store and some in game. Like for completing the "Glory of the Hero" meta achievement, you would get a great mount. This is tough achievement to get anyway. Also almost all of the cool battle pets are also in the Blizzard store as well.
The biggest smack in the face was how the Laughing Skull rep mount was a reskinned wolf and not the Grinning Reaver. They should of at least given Laughing Skull rep a non flying version.
Good Video Asmongold, and don't forget about the mount from AQ40 which took the entire server monthes to unlock and then was only obtainable by a select few. Now it, as mentioned in this video, is on my store. The most rare mount from vanilla is now obtainable by anyone with $25. Really makes me mad man.
What's sad is that the people defending the store mounts are the ones that enable Blizzard to keep doing this. And I do agree that perhaps the most ridiculous thing is the fact that mounts that blatantly look like they should be rep mounts are store mounts.

Mists of Pandaria had great mounts imo. It was the 14 month SoO patch when they started to go crazy with store mounts.

I let my subscriptions run out the other day because I was just bored with the game and I'm planning on resubbing when Legion comes out, but man if they added those cool unique mounts into the game instead of the store in these slow periods that would be enough to keep me subscribed through the expansion down time. Instead of one 25$ payment that would give them another 6-8 20$ payments.
To be honest the best mounts in the game (IN MY OPINION) are:
-Black Qiraji Battle Tank
-Merciless/vengeful/brutal Gladiator armored drake
-Swift spectral tiger.
All these mounts are BC/vanilla mounts. All unobtainable besides the Tiger, fucking annoying that players duped the cards. They are rare but I still think theres too many of them. Spent 600,000g on mine :). These mounts don't have the most updated textures, however because of how hard they are to acquire it wins.
I heard a few players use a program that can change the clients view gear/transmog/race/mounts and apparently you can morph your mount into blizz-store mounts for free. Maybe players should rebel by doing that.

The worst thing about store mounts is how quickly they become irrelevant, just when do you see people riding store mounts?... almost never.
When you make a mount obtainable with money instead of effort everyone buys it, and it becomes so common nobody uses it.

I believe the one non store mount in 6.2 that is unique compared to other non store mounts is the hellfire citadel mount, that seems to be the only one.
I don't have a serious problem with the collector/deluxe edition offering a unique model. I wasn't, (as many) too upset about the store mounts a few expansions back because there were good mounts available outside of the store and the store mounts were few and far between. However the current state is really not acceptable, we get almost as many unique mount models in-game as are available in the store, disgusting.
I still roll my Raven Lord, fuk all that Mystic Sabers stuff.
What you may have missed is that both boars and river beasts are actually using the same animation sheet as the dire horns. So basically they are both skin models with a tweaked skeleton model. The rapid running animation is a result of a shorter stride.
I get why people have an issue with it but I don't think this many cool and new mounts would be made if they weren't in the shop. Resources would be dedicated elsewhere. The mount and pet shop probably funds a few jobs. I have some disposable income, the mounts look freaking awesome and there are lots of other cool mounts in the game. I don't have an issue with it.
The best thing the community can do is actually post on the Blizzard website as well as submit suggestions from in-game. What most people end up doing is ranting pointlessly on sites Blizzard is not watching directly.
What does win, is pointing out to blizzard, that they already have the tech/code for the mounts, and re-skins with small animation changes does not equal the cost of real world money being paid. they need to make the mounts more then anything you can get in-game..
For example(s): Riding at higher speeds. All models have a repair, t-mog or bank option. Add storage on the mount. They are more interactive with the world (run "enemies" over). PvP - people can loot money from your mount if you are just standing there AfK (one time).
All of the above is 100% doable and I have already submitted this to Blizz several times because the imbalance needs to stop; they are better then that.

The issue is that for every person who hates the system there is someone throwing money at them. That is the issue with the gaming industry as a whole currently. The store mount that killed me the most was Armored Bloodwing as someone whose favorite race is troll I was like finally a bat mount too bad it is $25.
At first, the store mounts did not bother me because even though they most likely looked better than the mounts in-game, there were still some cool and unique mounts to get via playing the game, but I can see how can this get really frustrating in WoD..
And btw.As someone who's into 3D modeling now I can tell you that creating completely new mounts for wow really isn't that big of a deal if you put it into perspective. You could literally pay one guy to create an awesome new unique 3D model with textures and make him churn out a great new 3D model a week or every two weeks(with the amount of skill required and workflow efficiency to work at blizzard as a designer I think that's very possible). Now obviously the mount wouldn't have any animation but creating a skeleton and movements is very doable if you have the kind of resources these guys have.
If I were in control of directing WoW, I would definitely try to pull guys aside to constantly work on and create unique and new things to implement in the game and keep the playerbase more happy. And I mean free stuff,not cash items.
Rigging and animation don't take that long either - a week tops. The amount of re-skins is a crime.
+Steven Jones yeah making skeletons for a premade 3d model will take a day of work. And actually making the animation frame by frame takes a couple of days if you want it perfect tbh that's one person doing it especially with their team they could make 10 mounts in a week or two fairly easy work if you know what you're doing
I've noticed that couldn't be asked to get a single mount in WoD.
Now let's compared that to MoP, where I got the Klaxxi scorpion mount, The Shadow Pan tiger, the Cloud Serpent and the Grand Armored Gryphon.
Except for the Cloud Serpent where you had to earn it how to train your dragon style, Other unique mounts could be rep grinned trough 5 man dungeons and doing their own respective dailies.
Basically I had different options to up the reputation and there was always a sense of progression.
Imagine the only way for players to get a Cloud Serpent or Grand Armored Gryphon was via the store for $30,-
Not only does it removes the mount as earn able content, but it scraps a whole daily hub to try and earn the new mount.
Perhaps there is a daily hub, but I don't care if I can't earn a great looking mount for it.
First we pay for the actual game, then pay for all the expansion, then to even play the game we have to pay sub fee, THEN we have to pay boost to lvl 100 to play with friends, then we have to pay to get a cool new mount. Everything is pay pay pay to get stuff nowadays. Before you had to work to get a cool unique mount

we should have unique mount's available ingame and then recollours that would not make sence ingame, put them in the store for people wanting wieard colloured vertions of their mounts for transmog's etc.
also, put that ellk mount (magic moose) at the end of a 3 month daily quest rep, i'll be there every single day untill i get it!
Sadly I don't think these models will make it into the game as mounts, without getting it from the store. Same goes for MoP CE mount, and all other shop mounts. Chances are that the only way to get the moose, is from the store, even when Legion launches :(
Funny to think that if the Ashes of Al'ar were to be added into the game now in 2015, it would probably be a store mount. And since the players will need an ingame mount to compensate, they can have another boar.
i would be okay with blizzard adding the naked mounts to be acquired in game while the armored mounts to be from store. its a midway solution.
All mounts that cost money should be obtainable from the grindy quests that are like legendaries but more difficult
i think the way star wars did their companions in the market place was the right way. Basically you bought the companion in the maketplace which gave u a questline to complete before you got it. Something like that would be a cool way to add mounts in wow and while they would still be a cash grab at least they would have a reason for being unique and could be a fun quest chain if done right (im not saying greenfire scale just a short but well done series).

Well a lot of the faction mounts are just recolours (alliance/horde/panda). The ones that stand out are usually rare drops (Ashes) or the store mounts.
It's true that the value of the store mounts would decrease if similar alternative were available, but having the mount basically pulled from in game rewards just for a profit is lame.
The only one I bought was the fey dragon when it was part of a charity promotion.
Hopefully they don't do the same with artifact skins/colours...
Not to mention that the archimonde mount is really just a reskin/color of the damn sky golem.
I admit i purchased the celestial steed back in the day, because i thought it would suit my mage toon. I will never buy another mount from the shop because there is simply no prestige in owning them.

The most annoying part of this is we JUST had a patch with tons of reputations put in that reward mounts... so this easily could have been one of those rewards.

A few days ago I was browsing MMO-Champion's forums, something I would not recommend. I saw someone had posted a thread speculating that Blizzard might sell artifact weapon skins. The sad thing is, that the majority of the people commenting in the thread were saying either that they wouldn't care if Blizzard did that, or that they would be happy. Pretty much the only excuse they give is that its 'optional'. Tons of the comments said things like "Great I love being able to pay money to look cool without having to put time into the game". The forum is also full of people who literally want raiding removed from the game.
I feel your pain. I just don't buy the store stuff. I WANT the store stuff, but they can talk a long walk off a short pier if they think they're getting any more from me than they already are.
Old reps mounts like Talbuck - 7 colours of one mount for 1 rep. Nowadays, each recolour would be a separate rep or achievement...

You make a really good point that I overlooked. I would be Mindblown if they didn't add skins for your artifact weapons that you could purchase with rl money that are unobtainable in game.
Just look at mounts like Mimiron's Head and Ashes of Al'Ar, those mounts came out before store mounts why are those mounts so much more rare and respected then store mounts? It's not because they look cooler then store mounts. It's because THEY ARE NOT PURCHASEABLE.

I would say low drop mounts and Store mounts are on par for how much I appreciate them, because good luck getting the drop mount, and store mounts can just be bought. Rep grind mounts are the ones that people actively log in everyday to work towards. Just imo, tho

As a mount collector, I find it incredibly depressing that they would put something as nice as that behind a pay wall, but hey, we can hope for a terrible, less pretty recolor maybe, right? Honestly, I was never angry about the other mounts, I was more annoyed than anything, but this one just really pisses me off for some reason.

I wish I got the feeling Blizzard still cared about WoW. It seems more and more like they just wanna make as much money as possible before the game tanks. Instead of like fixing the game? Idk maybe that is a bit off base but it's how I feel.

You're missing the point. Blizz is keeping the good mounts for the store, and giving shitty mounts in game, to encourage, or hustle the idiots into buying them.
I love how the camera would "nonchalantly" pan to all the new Blizz store goods in front of them during the Gamescon "Q&A".
In theory Blizzard could follow the footsteps of Guild Wars 2 and go Free to Play and create more things for the store and use that as revenue and still be making money out the ass. More mounts, more pets, services & even currency could be added there to replace the subscription based revenue that they have now. I remember a couple years back they teased the holy colouring for Shamans and the cosmetic changes for Druids. Little things like that could be sold there in lieu of subs.
I played other MMOs (Guild Wars II and Archeage); both are supposedly free to play (you buy GW II once). But this allows only very basic play. I ended up being forced to subscribe to Archeage plus buying game stuff from both companies. With regard to cost, my experience is that Blizzard is by far the most player friendly of the three. I pay a sub. fee and I buy a pet or a mount from the store from time to time, and all this is costing me less an third of what I ended up paying monthly to Archeage (which I stopped playing) and continue to pay to GW II.

They didn't even change the animation of the boars. All they did was slow it down a little. While not even doing the same to the riverbeasts, that still gotta go fast! It's just sad that the ''run animation'' is just the walking animation sped up. Pretty much the only mount in WoD that has a good animation is the Gronnling. At least none of the other mounts look cooler than them.
Funny.. Here I used to think (and justify that) our subscription covered the cost of play and all the new content being free as the tradeoff..
Now I really can't see why we are paying a subscription anymore, when they have store-only items (like tons of FREE mmos) and get fewer "free" patches (WOD speaks for itself) with the plan to have more frequent paywalls labeled as "expansions".
Blizzard has gone downhill with corporate bullshit the last few years. It's frustrating to see this process because I love the Warcraft Universe like no other game universe.

There are the old TCG mounts that are easily worth 1000$+ and pretty much all of them are unique. At least you can buy these for 25$ anytime you want, and they are cheaper and cool.
Say what you will, that Heavenly Cobalt Serpent is the coolest looking mount out there.
