    Congrats on being sober. Five years ago I quit drinking after twenty something years .I'll admit my drinking was out of control. One night I was out at the bar and looked in the mirror. I didn't recognize or like the person staring back at me. I sat my beer down walked out of the bar and have been sober since. I don't miss it and since I quit I can't stand being around drunk people or the smell of beer or alcohol. My life has changed for the better and I'm much happier than I've been in years. I drank to deal with personal issues and bury the pain instead of confronting my issues and doing something about it

    I drank from 19 to 27. I'm a month and a half sober now with no desire to drink anymore. Willpower is key. The first month might not seem like a lot, but anyone that's quit for that long will tell you that it's that first month alone is satisfying enough to wanna stay sober. Quitting alcohol allows you to think clearly, wake up easier, rest better, spend time with your peers, and tackle your goals head on every day. It allows you to become more creative. You gain more confidence sober too so stay sober, you won't regret it.

      I think the hardest part was the emotional and mental parts of quitting I did not realize would be so difficult. I wasn't prepared for all of the changes that had to do with all the other aspects of quitting. I rediscovered myself as a person, lost friends, everything changed. But now looking back I see that it was all part of my journey, and it all has gotten me to where I am now!

      Rob Tonic....willpower alone is weak and its delusional to believe its the key. If its key why are there a billion people who relapse from various types of addiction everyday? Dive into buddhist teachings starting with the eightfold path, the 4 noble truths, the 3 marks of existence and, maybe most importantly, mindfulness. Just having understanding of these will shine some light....practicing them might change your life.

    Thank you! You are me. In college I would drink a lot but since I left I drank like a couple times a month. But when I started I couldn't stop. One drink would lead to fifteen. I've had alcohol poisoning so many times. I've ultimately decided to stop drinking. I love my husband so much and I want to be a better person for him and more importantly myself. I get so crazy and make people feel so uncomfortable. I've lost so many friends and the thought of losing my husband too is very real and scary . Very inspiring. It's not going to be easy but I know it's something I need to do.

    I've been sober for almost 2 years and it's a blessing! I've lost a lot of "friends" after becoming sober and gained new ones on a much deeper level. I graduate college next year and applying for the University of Minnesota to be a Social Worker. In time, life as a sober person gets easier. When your sober you can face your problems, you make better decisions and boy do great things happen more often. I'm alive to make music, help people and live, not to spend it in a bar. My uncle Mike died of liver cancer when I was a teen, and I watched him suffer in his bed, I dont want anyone to see me go that way. You are a gorgeous, smart, determined and unique woman, you've got this! On the hard days remember, life is an amazing ride, cherish it!

    Your story is so similar. I never drank during the week, went to the gym, had a good job but come Friday 5pm I was a full on alcoholic drinking all weekend. This was more than going out on Friday and Saturday nights (although it did start out that way). I would go out and drink, come home and drink, pass out on the couch, wake up and keep drinking, go out to the pub during the day then keep drinking Saturday night. I loved dressing up too, tied my drinking to my identity, felt like a total rock star when I was drunk and loved being 'bad'. It had been a problem for years but in the last year before I quit living my life was just so hard. I was exhausted all the time, I was hardly going to the gym and when I did I had zero motivation. My skin was a mess, I was falling asleep at my desk on my work from home days. It just had to stop. Here I am 567 days later, no cravings and loving it. You carve out a new identity, you can be a sober bad ass. I still love dressing up and still go out and have zero alcohol beers (but instead of being out all night it's maybe 2 hours). You have a natural high ALL THE TIME, instead of having the drinkers high and then being miserable until you drink again. Everything is an adventure, everything is exciting.

    I have been sober for almost a week. I know it is not lot of time considering that I have been drinking since I was 15, however I am starting to feel much more aware of my decisions and more confident when it comes to arguing or having a conversation with someone. I think most of the people drink alcohol because they want to run away from their reality or situation. If we were truly honest with ourselves we wouldn’t have to drink so much alcohol

    Good on you, keep going! Stay strong!
    I have been watching these videos just this morning because I have come to a realisation that I do need to stop drinking alcohol forever.
    I'm 22 I suffer from severe anxiety and depression, I have been for about 8 years,
    this was mainly due to being bullied at school, I was holding in so much anger even to this day that I didn't stand up for myself, so I take my anger out on alcohol. I am also on Venlalic XL 225mg and 120Levethyroxine pills (under active thyroid),
    I also drink because on alcohol I feel that I don't care what people think about me and I can talk to anyone and not care because alcohol makes me not care, it's like I'm this confident guy whilst on alcohol, everytime I go out I always get blacked out which in most nights im in hospital because doctors have told me that I have taken drugs such as cocaine and MDMA and they try and calm me down as I'm having a panic attack whilst it's going on and my heart is at like 120bpm,
    I also like going out just because I'm looking forward to my confidence that I get from alcohol and also to see if I can meet any girls and that.
    I'm afraid on I'm gunna miss out on something big but then it's just a standard night out. Chat to random people till about 3am, get a kebab and then go home at 4am and today after I was sick this morning I just had a realisation that I need to cut alcohol out from my life completely, let my medication work and live to my full potential, I also have dyspraxia, mild dyslexia, mild Aspergers and mild Autism. So I find it very difficult to learn and I just feel the only thing I can't fuck up in life is drinking, so I just do that.
    But yeah no more drinking for me, I have done a month clear before in the year and I felt okay but kept having panic attacks anyway but yeah I guess I will just wait and see what happens.
    But I so want to quit alcohol for good!

    • @SarahOrdo
      @SarahOrdo  7 лет назад

      I have been dealing with depression and anxiety since getting sober, it is not always easy. It sounds like we had similar tendencies when drinking. I also would black out and do things or take things and it was not safe for my body. That was what ultimately led to my hospitalization and getting sober. I am 18 months now, and it hasn't been an easy journey at all.. But you can get there I promise if I can!

  • @TheFusedplug
    @TheFusedplug 6 лет назад

    Sarah, first of all thank you for posting up your video and being open etc .. I'm 44 now and clean /sober and tbh feeling a lot better for quitting also looking better but the main thing is the difference in my sharpness of mind and the vast amount of spatial awareness .. I am gonna blow my trumpet a bit .. pure intelligence.
    All the time I was drinking my brain was turned to "off" mode I must have been sleepwalking through life. Some people are not affected this way but IMO if it adversely affects someone the way it did me I'd say to them STOP drinking forever as life becomes so much more beautiful without alcohol.

  • @georgibratoev3637

    Alcohol addiction/alcohol abuse is so complicated i cannot even believe it. Usually you see people on drugs like heroin,meth etc get hooked literally in 2-3 months and they need it to function where with alcohol it's quite confusing. Alcohol addiction usually takes years and years of abuse, however some people seem to never progress into the full blown alcoholic stage like you said you drank for 12 years and never progressed to the stage of waking up with the shakes an having to drink all day in order to feel okay. However for other people it seems like they do end up slowly progressing to that miserable stage even if it takes years to get there.
    It's fascinating how complex this disease is and how it's completely different for everyone. I strongly believe there is alcoholism and alcohol abuse and that you don't have to necessary be a full blown alcoholic to be addicted to alcohol, i believe you could be an abuser all your life but at the end of the day it's still some sort of addiction or a habit, still ruins your health and still a waste of money and time, mostly time dealing with hangovers and partying nights in a row.
    Thanks for being brave and sharing your story and i believe many people who been drinking for years can relate to what your saying, especially the part where all your friends know you as the 'always drunk, party animal'. The crazy thing about alcohol to me is that if you use it for long, it makes you confused as to who you really are, people seem to start defining themselves as drinkers, as if it's necessary to drink in order to be YOU, which once you cut down or quit, seems like a fucking joke. Anyway, it always takes a shock to stop, for me it was injuring myself because i was drunk and i've decided to cut down and doing it right now but god forbid it takes health issues to stop, cause that's fucked up.
    PS. Sozz for the long reply, i just really can relate to your video even though i am not a girl xD

      @SarahOrdo  7 лет назад

      I absolutely agree! Sometimes you don't fit into the "alcoholic" picture we always think of, but we still struggle with the same issues. Its definitely been a journey, I'm at 18 months now I just posted that video!

    As I'm taking that step to be sober, I lay here on a Saturday night avoiding getting drunk. Something happened last weekend, that I am on the path of being sober for good. This video really helped. I'm exactly the way you were. Only drink on weekends, but get drunk until I black out, not knowing what I did the night before. I really hope I can make it. I really hope I can remain sober. Thanks for the video!

      I am here if you need to talk! It is hard in the beginning when it's what you have been used to for so long. Having a great support system makes a huge difference. Weekends were the hardest part.. feeling like a "loser" because I wasn't out "having fun" anymore. Make sure you check out my blog at www.soberAF.com for more and share your story! :)

    This was so long ago and I'd love to hear whether you still drink/don't at all. I couldn't relate more to what you are saying. Every word I was nodding my head. I started drinking heavily at University and since then (like you, I don't drink 24/7) whenever I'd go out and drink, I was the "fun" "crazy" friend. I'd drink until I blacked out. I slept with people I probably didn't want to sleep with (in a sober mind). I jeopardised relationships because I said random, stupid shit when drunk - most of which I barely remember the next day. You really made me feel like I'm not crazy and I'm thankful. The truth is though, I would like to be able to have a steady drink here and there with friends and family. The thought of being completely sober forever does concern me. I'm trying to learn moderation. xxx

When your surrounded by drinkers you think it's the norm but in reality it's not. Once you close the door on alcohol many others will open to beautiful places that you only dreamed of. Hiya, I'm 20 years old, and a university student from New Zealand. Our binge drinking culture is an absolute disaster. You have perfectly described how messy and confusing my life has been for the past year, because of binge drinking. I have made so many mistakes, hurt myself and others so many times, and justified it because I was "drunk and crazy". I have been slowly realising the real danger of my drinking habits, and your video and your story has completely inspired me to stay sober. Drinking is too easy, because its what I've always done. My life has shaped itself around bottles of wine, and empty beer cans. I have not been out of a drunken stupor long enough to take control, and mould my own journey. Drinking isn't as fun and exhilarating as your wasted, fractured memories would have you believe. It's dangerous, unhealthy, and completely and totally expected. Our generation has become too accustomed to it. I have now realised that exhilaration is instead putting down the bottle, and doing things that help you find out who you really are. To find new hobby's, that don't involve bad breath and toilet bowls. To experience things that allow you to get to know yourself, to take care of yourself. This video was so helpful and encouraging- thank you! :) I hope you're still going well!

Same as you..party girl since 15 and o boy highschool and the first 2 years after were fun but after i becane a mom and couldnt kick it with my girls at the drop of a hat anymore, i started binge drinking alone. You dont have to wake up chugging vodka to b an alcoholic or for ypur life to become unmanageable. Im stopping (ive tried before:() bc my anxiety is crippiling me from being the fun,smart, funny person i really am. Binge drinking 2 or 3 times a week..drinking ALL of it lol and the cycle of all the days in between being filled with anxiety and dread. Life is hard but beautiful...im starting to see that again. Hope you are doing well and still on your journey :)

    I been drinking alcohol for 8 years and decided it was time to stop entirely 3 weeks ago and OMG do I already feel great! I know I'll look back down the road knowing it was worth it when a year goes by. I've even quick smoking too even though that was more of a social thing I did with friends and had more control with it than I did with drinking. My family has been very supported with my decision. However not my friends which is unfortunate. I guess it's time to move away from that crowd and find friends that are more supportive to me as my family already is. Thank you for making this video!!

      It was rough, but I ultimately had to do the same thing. Some of the people I considered to be my closest friends I had to remove from my life because I knew in the long run it would not be good for myself and my sobriety. In the big picture of things I can see that it was for the best for me in the long run, and I find comfort in realizing that.

    Clean and sober for almost half a year now and I'll never go back. The thought of getting drunk or high right now is so repulsive to me. I can't believe i used to drink every weekend. I see drunk people now and really see how people probably looked at me. It's embarrassing and shameful.
    Keep up the good work. I hope you're still sober. It's not easy at first but one day you'll just be so grossed out at the thought of drinking and drunks that it'll end up being a no brainer.

    I noticed that when I came to our Lord Jesus Christ, I had died to my old self sins and ways. but I still drank, just as I still do sin struggle snd backslide. but I've noticed that the power and guilt is now gone! and that slowly I'm seeing old sins still around, like drinking, lessen and tamper down.. it started with the drinking (and the needing to drink) slowing down and with out my even noticing several years later I went from drinking heavily often a week to rarely or nonexistent..That is the Power of the Gospel, of the Cross, of the Lord Jesus! He's mighty to save!

    Thank you so much for this! I grew up drinking. When I was 14, we went across the border to Mexico every weekend. I didn't need it everyday, but when i did go out, i would binge drink. That was still the case as I got older. It didn't help that my dad and brother were alcoholics. Because I kind of thought that I was meant to be on the path that they were. I recently quit because it disgusted me when i would see my best friend drooling on himself and falling everywhere. i was never like that, but it was terrible to see. So i quit. It was tough to leave some of my friends behind. But I feel great and have a new outlook on life. Thanks again!

    I quit drinking too because I just thought it was too expensive. I live in a city and there is so much to do then drink on weekends. Most of my friends were drinking buddies and that's what I was used to when I first moved here. I noticed that some of them weren't real friends. I think some drunks only care for themselves. I just started doing better hobbies like reading more and going to the gym. I started going to the gym on friday nights and sometimes saturday nights. After a while I just lost the urge to quit and thought it was boring. I seen so many people I now get DUI after DUI.

    The truth is being an alcoholic takes different forms, and you said you’re not an alcoholic. I beg to differ. As you said when you started drinking and didn’t know when to stop when you went out.
    That I’m afraid is an alcoholic.

    I just turned 21 and when I went out for drinks a couple days after my birthday with my cousins because all my friends aren’t 21. I got a cotton candy cosmo martini at the sugar factory. Anyway I wasn’t drunk but I have ibs and it just bothered my stomach thought I was going to vomit. I realize this isn’t for me. I did have 2 drinks for my birthday and a drink the day after l. I had drinks before I turn 21 but that’s was rare it was like a drink two the most. After I went out for drinks and out to eat with my cousins I realized I don’t want to drink anymore because I want to make my stomach better and I saw all the benefits of not drinking. I want to remember my youth not forget things. So now I am 2 days sober and feel much better. Want to eat right and go to gym I saw Jennifer Lopez doesn’t drink caffeine or alcohol and that inspires me to stop drinking like she looks good and I want to look like her when I am older. But my stomach needs to heal and alcohol will make my stomach worse. Just rather get rid of my stress by yoga or working out instead of having a drink.Plus next year I want to focpis on how to cope when I am anxious. I haven’t been diagnosed but I think I have generalized anxiety disorder and I want to cope with that. I feel if I eat right, change my mindset, go the gym do yoga and meditation it would be more helpful than drinking. I seen that drinking doesn’t help with anxiety and could make things worse and I don’t want that.

    Wow. This is EXACTLY what I'm dealing with. A six pack once in a while for me turns into every night. And your right about not needing a drink when you wake up. But once the night comes you just think of drinking. I really want to get to know me now.

      I never realized how much of who I was out with friends was fueled by it. You'll realize what an amazing person you are are your own. :)
