Years ago at a WWII Bataan Veterans reunion in San Diego, I got to meet the last living Corregidor nurse. It was an honor, that's for sure. An interesting aspect of those reunions is that there would be a table heaped with all kinds of wonderful food, but no one would eat. Very sobering. (Given to charity, though.
And each year, since 2008, to further memorialize that whole situation, I attend, with thousands of others, the Bataan Memorial Death March (walking marathon) at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico!
If you want to understand where the basis for this movie came from, research The Band of Angels, 66 army and 11 navy nurses who were stationed in the Phillipines just prior to WW2, cared for the American and Filipino troops on Bataan and Corregidor, and then in detainment camps for civilians. Courage, dedication, perseverance, endurance: these women had it! I almost guarantee you'll have tears before you're through reading about them! There's a monument to them from the troops they saved at The Mount Samas Shrine that honors the American and Filipino troops.
The book is titled "We Band of Angels" and is just so incredible. I'm a nurse, and it's a must read if you're a nurse. ❤
Great cast
Just received this on d.v.d yesterday. Great film. Would have been a better film without the love story. The 2 women with men's names--Claude Colbert and Paul Goddard are great actresses and did a great job on their roles. The battle scenes were great as well as the cinematography.
How can I get a copy?
Why is it that I never see this movie on any of the channel that show old movies? I hope come Dec 7th they play it..
