    A true masterpiece ! You can tell from the quality of its prestigious second roles cast, too (I love Lucile Watson).
    I saw it on a French classic movies channel, years ago. I even watched it several times, then. Later, had to get rid of the decoder on which I had recorded it. A small tragedy.
    Why on earth can’t we see these old movies for free now remains a mystery to me.
    Who the hell could still pretend to any rights on this public domain material ?
    Everyone in it has been dead as doornails for quite a while know : not a chance to see them raise and claim any salary ...
    I resent the RUclips restriction policy that blocks films from the Golden Age era.
    Because of the war (the German forbade anything from America, of course) this movie was released in France far before “Gone With The Wind” (1939, although only released in Paris on May 20th 1950 !). That explains the common French confusion : people here would still think that Vivian Leigh signed this “Waterloo Bridge” (1940) first. Its French title is “La Valse dans l’ombre” (The Waltz In The Shadow).

    I hate that they call her a dancer in the movie instead of a ballerina. Sounds like she does the can can instead of ballet!

    • @phebus2005
      @phebus2005 4 года назад +3

      The great Maria Ouspenskaya plays the director of the ballet. She has to act the role of a Russian old woman who dedicated her life in that field. And of course, she has to create an accurate character.
      In Russia, as well as in the rest of Europe, the dance vocabulary is French. Just as the music terminology is currently Italian all over the world.
      Now, the french translation for ballet (a French word too) is dance, in that context.
      As the woman is Russian (and back in her days, learning French was mandatory to the well established Russian society) she would express herself using the proper French terms when it comes to practice and performance.
      I wasn’t surprised to hear her speak of “danseuses” (women dancers) and “danse”.
      Even at the Paris Opera, they named its ballet school “École Nationale de Danse” (dance school), which is not at all regarded as ordinary, although the same word applies to Cancan (still a dance) indeed.
      Since that use comes from as early as the first kings’ courts of France, no wonder why this art is called “dance” instead of ballet.
      Moreover, in music as well as dance, a “ballet” is a short interlude between the acts of an opera. The woman in that film knows that. She wouldn’t make such a mistake.
      Funny enough, in French, a ballet is also a broom (it spells differently but sounds the same), and no dancer would ever enjoy to be seen as the wicked witch of the East ...
      😉
