Hello Una [Daily Life of Una] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and very recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

The important thing is that the links lead to recordings of good A/V quality, and highlight the diversity of the musical directions approached by the band.

I knew you'd appreciate their music, it just took one good listen! 😉 They're all fantastic musicians. Floor can do just about any style of singing, including growls. I know I also recommended the song 'Romanticide' if you wanted to hear the heavier side of Nightwish, but 'Yours Is An Empty Hope' is a good choice too. Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show, and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites:

Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera). 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song. Here are some examples:

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in the last year. Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of the presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughter Freja (5 years old), a horse and pony, a dog and a bunch of cats, she found this.

Seriously, if you ever have the chance to see them in concert, take it! They are an... intense experience, especially with the right openers. I think one of the single best concerts I have ever been to was Nightwish at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland with fucking Kamelot and Sabaton opening. I couldn't speak or hear properly for two days after that.
Edit: As for a song suggestion? I will always say Poet and the Pendulum, but that song requires a bit of background knowledge and experience with the band to really get the full effect. If you decide to listen to it, I highly recommend looking up the story behind it before listening. It's a real heartbreaker though, just a heads up.

I enjoyed your reaction very much but I also want to thank you for a couple of things. It astounds me that some reactor videos have such crappy sound. They want people to support their channel but they can’t be bothered to produce a good video. The sound of the video here is excellent. Also, along the same line, you had the volume at a perfect volume level. The 3rd thing is that the sync between the audio and video were perfect here. You’d be surprised at how many other reaction videos are not. So thank you again.

Hey Una - Always enjoy those first time Ghost Love Score reactions. They never get old. Look to Gabriel and Martine to help guide you through Nightwish's catalog though I'd love see you react to "Ever Dream" from the same venue. Since you were envious of the 82,000 concert goers, I think this venue runs the festival year up in Germany. Not that Nightwish would be there every year, but just to experience the place. Nightwish tours Europe so you'll be able to catch them at some point if you have interest.
I don't consider myself a Nightwish fan like the majority of the fan's you'll find here. I'm really a fan of Floor's and her solo projects, which after seeing her solo performances from her appearance on the Dutch tv show Beste' Zangers solidified my fandom of Floor and introduced me to Nightwish. Nightwish is Finnish gift to metal music and Floor Jansen (vocals) is "God's" gift to Nightwish. Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) writes and composes this beautiful Nightwish metal music. The current drummer is Kai Hahto but in this video the drummer is Jukka Nevalainen, Kai's good friend. I just love Jukka's drumming and his style. I miss him so much because he's not drumming anymore🤘🥁💕

Nightwish is currently touring in Latin America and will be on the road in and around Germany at the end of November and December. In January they are in the Far East. Ghost Love Score will probably be on the setlist.
In April she is solo in the Netherlands and in May in Germany and Zurich/Vienna. Before that, her solo album will be released. Maybe there is also let it go.
I need them to come to Spain!!!!
@@DailyLifeofUna In June they were at a festival in Santa Coloma. If you don't want to go on holiday in Germany now, you won't see them again until 2024 at the earliest. 30 Nov in Paris is the closest.
The metal market in Germany is much larger than in Spain and Germany is relatively easy to get to because of its central location.
Yes Floor has trained in opera, as well as rock, musicals, you name it. She's definitely a metalhead at heart. Check out her own channel as well as "Beste Zangers" where she shows that there's no genre where she can't slay it
You’ll find that Nightwish is quite versatile…no two of their songs really sound alike, but they all have that Nightwish goodness. Gabriel provided you with a good list of songs…just choose from those and you can’t gone wrong. ☮️

Oh...don't think just younger people love Nightwish...I am an old lover of hard rock and heavy metal from the middle 1960's...when I was 8 years old!! I am 65 now and still listen to the music I grew up listening to, plus Nightwish and Within Temptation, who is also pretty darn good! ( Texas speak for their daaaam good! ) Oh..new subscriber!
There is a buckets of great songs from Nightwish but what ever you choose to listen,choose always live(Sure music videos are good too). Nightwish have this unique feelings on their live gigs ant that will take you to the world of emotional stories....And yes,one warning,you can not find your favorite Nightwish song because always when you are listening new one,you may think that this it is,my favorite! But no,listening Nighwish is endless circle,it is impossible to find one what could be over the other songs.
You will find great audio/video clips from these concerts: Wacken,Tampere;Buenos Aires,London Wembley...Sure there is many more too.
My choose to you could be example "Greatest show on earth" from Tampere, "Poet and Pendulum" from Wembley, "I Want My Tears Back" from Buenos Aires and "I wish have an angel" from Wacken....But as I wrote, there is so many songs taht this list could be something else after thinking 10 minutes...And 10 minutes after that again something else.
@Daily Life of Una: I could see how Floor's voice was making you feel things. Tuomas, the composer and keyboardist, has written songs for every emotion you can think of. From being in love with Ever Dream, to feeling thrown away and depressed with The Poet and the Pendulum, to being entirely grateful we live on planet Earth with The Greatest Show On Earth, Tuomas has the ability to write things in a way that, even without Floor, is very human in nature. Because he has that ability to blend classical music with metal, it is why we call him "The Metal Mozart." And with Floor's ability to make the listener not just hear the music, but feel the music, this band is once-in-a-lifetime, in terms of the talent they have.
Sadly, Jukka, the drummer here, and Marko, the bassist here, are no longer playing with the band. Jukka stepped down because of an on-going (at the time) running battle with insomnia. Marko stepped down in January this year, because of how the industry treats the musicians and artists.

If you love the Christmas vibe, check out Floor singing O Holy Night in Finnish. I don't know any Finnish, but it still is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. (Kittos=Thank You, I guess I do know one Finnish word.)

(Non)Fun Fact: Bassist Marko was recently diagnosed with ADHD. Before that he had depression for 10 years. Due to depression, he left the band during the pandemic, which is a great loss. I hope he changes his mind now and he comes back.

Hello Una, welcome into the wonderful world of storytelling by Nightwish and their incredible talented female vocalist Floor Jansen.
Although the band is Finnish their 3rd female vocalist isn’t, she is Dutch. Floor was born on Februari 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career (initially) just as the background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997, but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocalrange runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons.
On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program De tiende van Tijl. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 (while she was within ReVamp, but recovering from a burnout) Floor replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. After one year (shortly after the Wacken Open Air festival concert 2013) on October 9th 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer.

Nightwish, After Forever and ReVamp worked under the same Nuclear Blast record label. Tuomas and Floor know each other since August 20th, 2002 when Nightwish played in a sold-out and swelteringly hot “Hof Ter Lo” in Antwerp with After Forever and Charon as support act.
