@@alejandromoreno8248No need!! I actually dropped it into the knock-off Mad Catz Ego (Monoprice Dark Matter) and it fits perfect and solves the issue I had with the the NE diagonal angle… we really are brothers lol. You would just need a 5-pin to .187 adapter and a screwdriver. Default grommet matches Sanwa spring resistance.
I'm glad you took the time to review this lever because there aren't many reviews out there even at this point, let alone reviews that test shmups with these sticks. Some points that I wanted to add as another shmupper who plays on K-lever (used to play on a Crown 309MJ, eventually got a Golden Lever). 1. The initial tension of the Shinsun lever is super low because it was designed for people who are coming from a JLF with a ball top. The default 15A grommet is now the lightest grommet offered by Crown/Samducksa. Since you like bat top, you made the right move going up on the tension with a heavier grommet. 2. There is a Crown lever that's cheaper and also good for 2D and that is the 309 NewHelpme. It is also very sensitive. The only downside is that it has a circle coller instead of the squircle that the Shinsun has. It also lacks a gate. Plus, it seems to sell out fairly quickly on FocusAttack. 3. The one knock that I have seen about the Shinsun is that the throw is not that short, more of a medium throw. I'd be curious to see it compared to the 309 NewHelpMe, because the 309 levers had pretty short throw by K-lever standards. Now the thing with K-lever is that you don't need to use the full throw if you don't want to. Actuation and throw are separate things unlike on a JLF where the two are closely intertwined. I really enjoyed your review and I'm glad your first foray into K-levers has been a good one so far. It's nice to see people give K-lever a shot for 2D games like shmups.
Thanks Psy!!! I caught that later into making the video, that there were low collar k-levers that could drop into Japanese setups. The actuation/throw difference caught me off guard (as shown in the video)! It’s pretty dramatic with the Shinsun. I since got a Knee Neo which is much stiffer and can play a lot further out to the collar/gate to hit diagonals, but yeah everything kind of syncs up around the resistance. i definitely want to experiment more with the Shinsun tensions and try the 15A+balltop, and the NewHelpMe too… it’s an addicting hobby!!!
Hey Psy, I really like using a ball-top with a hybrid/wineglass grip and usually prefer an LS-56. What K-Lever would you recommend based on that? I'm hoping for something that will fit in my 8bitdo wireless or Qanbra Q4raf.
@@blazinglazers69 I would again point to the 309 NewHelpMe but it's not easy to find a conversion shaft anymore that would allow you to install a ball top on it. I might actually have to recommend the Shinsun in your situation because of that. Now there are higher end boutique options like the Golden Lever and the Sanjuks levers, but those are really expensive and not a good starting point for people new to K-levers. Also, your Q4RAF should fit just about any low-collar K-lever with no issues and would be much better suited than the 8bitdo wireless stick.

I can’t pinpoint like a science for it, but I noticed I play better with the Shinsun on certain games and better with the SELS on others. I’m still trying to figure out and articulate the reasons. If you have any questions or want any details I’m happy to answer any questions or make a quick unlisted video just let me know!
@@SpidersSTG I think the better diagonals may have to do with the way that the microswitches are placed in the two seimitsu sticks that you are talking about. @@Vexonia_Music I think I figured it out since I started messing with a Knee Neo... with the Shinsun the throw is so long and *maybe* because I removed the shaft cover that I'm trying to hit a diagonal closer the the center not using the gate at all. With the Neo and a the 35a (?) grommet I tap the cardinals in a tight box and hit hard/fast to the gate for the diagonals. Once I got the hang of it it is sick, just obviously fatigue kicks in quicker. Gonna try and carry that technique over to the Shinsun. But yes in general I noticed this with the Sanwas vs. Seimitsu/K-Levers I really like the leaf switches a lot for knowing where I'm at.

Excellent video. I have been wanting to get a stick for shmups and fighters, but I don't know anything about brands, styles, maintenence, etc. 👍 oh man your philosophy about our "place" in gaming hit me. I feel that sometimes. Like what am I doing in the gaming sphere? 😂 😢
Thanks VW!! The world of arcade sticks is a lot and I think it’s really hard to find well articulated discussions about it because so much is “feel”. Sanwa is pretty popular with 2D fighters and some people swear by them, but they also kind of “won” the format war like VHS did and not necessarily for being better than Betamax. I don’t really like them, but that said they are really easy to mod with tons of options available and after tweaking some things I do have 3 different modded Sanwas I love. Seimitsu is generally preferred by shmup players and hardcore retro arcade players for the LS-32 which was the standard Japanese arcade cab stick and also (I think) in Neo-Geo cabs around the world. I’ve seen a lot of shmup players use the LS-40 and LS-56. My “main” stick is an SELS-70-X which is based on the LS-56 and with no shaft rotation. They make a silent version too. Happ was the ubiquitous American arcade stick, and that design is now made by a company called IL (Industrias Lorenzo), though SuzoHapp is still around. They don’t fit in common consumer cases (just XArcade I think), people usually put them into cabinets or custom work. The Korean levers (IST, Crown/Samducksa, seem even more nuanced and different even among a brand, so I don’t have much to offer for info. The market seems very driven by Tekken players, and even more by Mishima players, so it’s hard to get a read on what would be good “for the rest of us” lol If you ever want to dive in and have any questions just shoot me a message. I have a ton of spare parts too if you ever need or want to try different buttons or whatever I can mail you something.
@@SpidersSTG I would probably start with a default/entry level stick. To start. One that I could use out of the box. And go from there. Who knows I might hate using it! Haha
Got so caught up in stick talk I forgot about the rest of the comment! I'm glad that connected with you. I've been thinking about that a lot the last couple years. One, I think even though I've been playing games since I can remember, it wasn't until getting properly into arcade games and it shifting my mindset that I felt like a real gamer instead of just a consumer. I think when you're a consumer you're just kind of stuck with what comes down the pike, and these last few years I feel like not only have the mainstream games been really unsatisfying, but the attitude from the industry and media has been such a "if you don't like it you're the problem" and it's really... discouraging to say the least! You're a badass diehard gamer, so I don't see the industry blowing you around like a leaf!!!!
@@SpidersSTG I feel like I am true to myself in my gaming. Just need to keep refining the formula. Thanks man. I am definitely not chasing the new trends/games. The last few years and presently the mainstream industry is lost. The big publishers deserve all the failures the receive. They do it to themselves.
Nice overview, I fully prefer crown for tekken and VF, and seimitsu for everything else, but I was mildly curious about this new style of lever's throw and actuation in general (without having to invest of course). IIRC Mark has/had a (modified?) crown in his stick, and I like the idea of the floating circle gate in theory, but I've never really tried using it for shmups because I have a super heavy grommet for a fast return to neutral after tapping in 3D games. It's not quite right for tap dodging because of the resistance (I basically just use it so I can slap the stick with my palm lol) and feels weird to move for long periods of time.
I just setup a Knee Neo and I totally get what you mean - getting the high resistance and “slapping” the bat reminds me of the old US arcades. I would say Shinsun being built for the lighter resistance (it comes with a 15 grommet stock) but still having that snap to neutral and smaller distance to activate would be better for shmups, but it’s not so much better than a Seimitsu in every regard that I would pick one over the other completely. I’m happy to have the luxury of not having to choose only one! I haven’t watched Mark’s “golden lever” video in a while… I remember his setup being really interesting but more work and investment I was up for at the time.
I used an IST Fujin (and way, way too many spare parts) for a few years but now I'm on a SELS-70X, which you can pry from my cold, dead hands. Seriously though. It's a fucken rabbit hole, man. Be careful. LOL
Hey Darkslide! In the video description at the bottom I have a link to Arcade Shock’s Compatibility Quick List where they have the Qanba Titan listed, and it says what options you have. Shinsun would fit anywhere a Knee would. Some posts on reddit (search Qanba Titan Korean) talk about what sticks fit good too.
Scratch that... I just saw a post on r/fightsticks where someone dropped a Shinsun into an 8bitdo!!!! I asked if it fit with no modding and I'll let you know if the answer before I can check for myself :)
From the reddit OP: “Yeah, in the Xbox version at the very least. It's a tight fit close to the edge of the casing, i had to slightly bend two of the switch connectors, but otherwise it's perfect. I did remove the squircle gate on the bottom, but I think it fits even with it on.” Should be good to go! I will still check to confirm when I get the chance

If you’re interested, I did an interview with Dace @Shmuptopia and we go into a lot of things about the hobby and what it’s like to be a new player. His channel is one of my favorites too :)
Crimzon Clover is wonderful! I’ve been chipping away at the Novice 1CC for a couple of months while playing other games… the TLB (true last boss) robbed me of the 1CC the other night!!! It’s a great place to start and I kind of wish I wasn’t as intimidated by it when I first started.
I hope you stick around! Any questions or if you just want to chat or celebrate a victory feel free to leave a comment in any of the videos :)
@@SpidersSTG Thanks for the very nice response. I'll definitely stick around your channel and listen to your interview! Cheers and congrats for your great content!
Fascinating video Spiders! 🕹🎮🎮🕹
Thank you Alvi!!!! I appreciate you
Excellent video.
The market seems very driven by Tekken players, and even more by Mishima players, so it’s hard to get a read on what would be good “for the rest of us” lol
If you ever want to dive in and have any questions just shoot me a message.
Be careful. LOL
That’s my favorite lever too!!! It IS a rabbit hole haha but it’s too late for me.
"We don't bullet stream that way in Korea, TAKE ME HOME!"
hahahaha
i like your videos
i also appreciate you taking Korea to the limits
i have a Quanba Titan what are my options here (i just got the stick a week ago and already want to mod everything)
not a shot at stock titan its really good (although bat top was a must) i just like modding things lol
Does anyone know if this or any other K-lever will fit in an 8bitdo arcade stick box? :)
8bitdo case is too shallow (pretty sure). I’ll see if I can check for you!
I did remove the squircle gate on the bottom, but I think it fits even with it on.”
Should be good to go! I will still check to confirm when I get the chance
@@SpidersSTG amazing thanks :)
Super interesting dude. Might have to see if I can get one in my wireless 8bitdo.
Thanks brother! I *think* you can. I was looking for someone else who asked and I saw a post on r/fight sticks where someone dropped a Shinsun into the XBox 8bitdo no problem… just bending some contacts around.
I’m going to check with my gear when I get the chance to confirm and I’ll let you know too:)
@@SpidersSTG You're the man dude thank you! I'm very intrigued by how slight you were able to move it to get movement! And the clicking gives me ASMR. I wanna try it out for Touhou style danmaku.
@@blazinglazers69 That was the penny drop moment for me for sure! It feels so silky in Shikhondo, Cosmo Dreamer, and some of the Steam 2H randos I tried too. Glad you like the clicks! I thought about dialing it down but I really like it too :)
