Thanks for sharing. I agree with the potential poisoning of the mind due to certain adopted mindsets or habits. I do very few reviews and I have never used any sort of ranking system as this feels like an injustice to the spirit of the experience waiting for each individual.
As for scoring, I personally don't see this as the ultimate way in which to connect with any given game (I don't recall your exact wording), but more so a common ingredient that often contributes to a stronger link. I think it's easy to see scoring as the greatest way to know a game because of the high demands, yet there are other approaches that demand an even greater depth when it comes to knowledge, awareness, execution, etc. and I think, in general, the strongest relationships stem from a committment to the learning itself. Whether on the path of survival or scoring, I believe these still limit the experience too much compared to what can be tapped into when we reach deeper still. A lot of this will be covered in my supporter-exclusive material but this also inspires me with some ideas for our upcoming chat! Thanks again!

Thanks for checking it out Dace!!! One of the things that drew me to your channel was your style of review and your first looks. Always being open to the experience and what the game is giving, but also the information players want to know.
I’m really eager to hear your thoughts on “connecting”!!! I know you push yourself beyond the game’s rules, but I’m excited to talk to you about this. Might be a slight difference in terms, perspective, or the next veil to be unlifted and for me to learn from :)
Can’t wait for the exclusive material - don’t forget to hit me up when it’s ready I can’t wait!!!

@@SpidersSTG No worries, man! I'm happy to hear you picked up on that. Yeah, it's one of those things - reviews (in the general sense) don't really interest me or hold much value because they typically strive to help people gauge whether a game is "worth" the money, time, etc. or not - which is a service I don't require. The only times I watch reviews are if I'm already sold on a game and want to enjoy hearing someone talk about it. People who clearly don't have a passion for the game or have more negative things to say are not interesting to listen to because 95% of the time the things people complain about are non-issues to me and will not sway me from dipping in to experience the game myself. When it comes to something like controllers, I'd say there's a much higher cost involved, so it's about equipping people with as much relevant information as possible and encouraging things one way or another if they're already looking to take things in that direction or if there are currently epic deals on the go. But yeah, I'll message you soon about our upcoming chat. Thanks again for your support and enthusiasm!

Yes!!! It was specifically the Risk System and Jamestown “reviews” you did on Shmuptopia that made me so glad you were putting your thoughts out into the ether. Everyone seemed to be harping on what they games were NOT, but you had the openness to see what was there, and that’s exactly how I hope to approach every game/experience :) I think we talked about this too but there is a total dearth of controller/stick reviews from non-fighting game players… I value your hardware videos so much! I hope you get a kick out of my next video, a very silly stick mod “how-to” :)

@@SpidersSTG Oh man, somehow I'm only seeing this now!! Yeah, I totally agree - the focus on 99.99% of arcade stick reviews is always whether it's worth it (or not) for fighting games when there are literally oodles of other genres to talk about. Happy to hear you find value in my vids. I still zero in on fighting games when it comes to all-button controllers, though that's mainly because I feel they are very well suited whereas I don't see myself using stick for fighting games any time soon, if at all. Something about ABCs just feels right. I'll need to track down your stick mod vid, as I don't recall whether I checked it out or not.

    Excellent job!!
I wasn't sure if I wanted to grab this right away after the Electric Underground review... I mean I have a dozen SHMUPS on my deck that I need to spend more time with already but you convinced me. So my boys and I sat down with this on the week end and had a blast. Great game.. a little easy on the easy mode but that's not a big deal. I still got my ass handed to me on the harder difficulties. I really like the retro mode you unlock later on too. Plenty of game in this thing still.
The length is about right IMO.. we played through it several times already, maybe put 6 hours into it now. I like the re-playability of SHUMPS, it's one of the features that keeps me coming back. Too many games don't respect my time, they think it's ok to waste hours just wandering around trying to figure out what to do next.. not SHMUPS.. I am busy from the moment I start until I'm done and then I can move on with my life. They remind me of sheet music.. (I recall you were working on a songwriting to SHMUPS comparison video at some point) in that with sheet music I can learn the music bar by bar.. I can play through the entire thing at whatever tempo I like.. making mistakes galore along the way (this is credit feeding) and learning the ropes.. as I get better eventually I can play the game at pace and it looks like I know what I'm doing. With longer games.. especially these open world time sinks... there is no reason for me to go back. I never improve at the game because I never play it more than once.. with SHUMPS the short time really encourages me to actually learn the game, to get good at it, to learn every nook and cranny that it has to offer and the density is such that that I'm still noticing things in the background during my tenth play because I was so busy playing for survival the first nine times that I missed it.
In any case.. I look forward to your Andros Duos II breakdown.. I adore that game. Cheers.

I think you nailed the appeal! I'm glad you dig the game. It also jumped to the top of the pile for me. 100% on the respecting yor time. Snappy menus, fast loading, instead of smashing 'start' to get through the story, you hit pause to see the story... really just getting everything right in that regard. The sheet music comparison is really interesting! I never could read but I remember learning tablature haha. That transformation between the mechanical playing the right notes in the right order that sounds "correct" into actually "playing it", and then your hands and creativity taking it over and "you are playing it"... whatever that is definitely happens in shmups too. Not sure if the songwriting analogy makes it into the Andro Dunos vid but either way your getting a shout out. Thanks for watching brother!

Sick video, I enjoyed it almost as much as Dune 2 👍
I don't know about the music/graphics though. As far as I'm concerned, both ass and tits are just graphics.
The analogy of someone making a Persona 5 review after playing for one hour is perfect though, I never thought of it that way but it makes so much sense. I think that might even get through to people who don't play arcade games.

lol, holy shit dude. I love what you said about online reviewers. You're absolutely right; if you hate something, your opinion is worthless to me. I started watching a video of a guy reviewing a show and he started with, "Full disclosure, I hate this type of show." Like, I guess thanks for telling me up front to not watch your video? It's wild what people think is an honest review.

100%. Somewhere along the line when the hobby grew past enthusiasts and critics and they started this lower cost common denominator “everyman” approach like it’s the most untainted and objective way to review. I don’t get it either because they end up with the same opinions anyway.

@@SpidersSTG I actually want to make a shmup. Well, full disclosure, I want to do the art and design for one and get help making the actual game coding parts. I've loved the game "The Guardian Legend" since I was a kid back in the 80's, and I'd love to make an homage to that. Half shmup, half adventure game. That's probably not very exciting for the hardcore shmup crowd, but I'd still want to make the shmup part as fun as possible. I've got some ideas but I want an education on what makes a great shmup before trying to make one.

I've noticed that there are a lot of RUclipsrs creating videos about how games aren't fun anymore. Devil Blade Reboot is a good example of the opposite. The game isn't perfect, in my opinion the levels are too formulaic and don't have the same depth as some arcade games of the genre, but it's undeniable that the game is super fun.
I hope that popular RUclipsrs start talking more about arcade games. They emerged and evolved at a time when the intention was only one: to make the player start having fun immediately, otherwise the guy wouldn't put a second coin to play again.
Modern games have moved so far away from their origins that they are genuinely making people bored.
