Finding 10 (ish) Indie RPGs and Reviewing Them

- Like a hog seeks truffles, I seek weirdo indie games in my spare time and it's time to finally lead you to the delightful, delicious treats I've found.. only for you to pull me away so that you can sell the truffles. This metaphor fell apart quickly, but I am a lot like a hog. No one can take this 1963 Ohio county fair "fine hog" blue ribbon I won. No one.

Apologies if a couple bits with vocals sound a teensy weirdly mixed, a power outage meant some emergency re-records of corrupted audio were slotted in. Игры
First of all thanks so much for watching! Secondly, I am pinning this comment here in case you are here to ask a common question: The pixel art looking game at the 2 minute mark isn't credited until well after an hour into the video due to an editing error. In case you're curious that game is Franzen, by independent developer Scumhead and is here: store.steampowered.com/app/2572340/Franzen/ or scumhead.itch.io/franzen
Other than that, thanks so much everyone for the kind comments and all the cool indie game recommendations. Wishlist feelin' really beefy rn.
I really recommend playing crosscode, it's amazing
@@andrey_m4009 I have had a few people recommend this game to me. I gotta try it.
I LOVED lunacid, kingsfield tank controls have left me unable to approach the games so far but this game absolutely slaps.
They don't really have tank controls though. There's buttons for looking around, for turning, and for strafing. That's all you need for a normal first person control scheme. If you're playing on an emulator, you can super easily swap the controls around on the controller and get a slow but totally normal dual stick(-ish) control scheme that feels very natural. I did this the last time I played KF JP and it worked just fine.
Lunacid is so good.
What a Brutiful Orchestra
The time has come
Really tugging on my heartstrings there with your use of Terranigma music in the background. Stellar choice.
Thanks! Terranigma is one of my all time favs.
I loved this video! Finding out about new, unique or just weird games is always entertaining.
I am torn between whining about the lack of new games this video made me discover and lauding your (*our* impeccable) taste in games. I'll let you decide.
Excellent video, the soothing voice really is a plus with the simple yet compelling narration. I needed my anxieties to be toned down, you succeeded. The next video won't come soon enough.
Haha, glad you liked the video. Sorry I couldn't hit you with anything new. Such is our burden, as people with great taste in games.
Great list, I'm very excited to play a lot of these! I fell in love with Vagante a few years ago and it has even gotten some seriously great patches in that time, it's a very special game and one of my go-to adventure games.
Lovely video. Your cadence is very relaxing to listen to.
I enjoy your cadence, writing, and editing style. Looking forward to more of your videos in the future.
Loved this video, but I was super disappointed that there was only one game that wasn't in my Steam library yet (the Sokoban game). I guess I've just spent way too much time dumpster diving into the Steam store myself! Personally I would definitely like to see you do more of these videos.
Great video seriously, I'm already running to Steam to get pretty much everything here!!
(also, after that perfectly accurate description of how it feels to play sokoban-games, I'm definitely following!!)
One way Heroics is a timeless classic. One of the cheapest games on steam, but definitely a masterpiece. The story has made me tear up a few times; the joy of throwing arrows at enemies is funny.
SmokingWolf is a talented developer of both his engine, and his games made with them. Cx
Yeah, such a great game. I don't like the Spike Chunsoft remake though.
Pretty rad video. Nice job with this. 👍
Also that stinger at the end hahahaha.🤣
Instant sub from me! I love hidden indie gem videos and this does not disappoint. Your commentary is very entertaining as well! Here's hoping you make more of these!
You just added a lot to my wishlist. Thank you
Great video. Thank you for making it. You got some lolz out of me.
The real question is how did you glance over: Slave Princess Finne, Why Did She Sell Out Her Own Kingdom?
It took every fiber of my strength to ignore.
Some of those games are legitimately good. Rance 7 and Kamidori are so good you could take out all the prons and they'd still be way better than most AAA titles nowadays.
thank you. my wishlist grows!
I always love hearing about new games. Also, alas poor metaphor, we hardly knew ye!
Great video, extremely high quality!
Thanks! Glad you liked it :)
Nice content, man!
Surprised but happy to see One Way Heroics on here, hidden gem for sure. A game I come back to at least once a year.
Yeah, I was very surprised by that one. A great time.
High quality vid, thanks for sharing, you deserve more subs 👌
Thanks, I appreciate that!
I really enjoy video like these. Found many great games with these kind of videos!
Cool video! Maybe I'm just too tuned in, but I've totally heard of a bunch of these already. I'd love to see a follow up video where you cap out at 250 reviews--dig into some really obscure stuff. 😉
a.) you have excellent taste and b.) that would be a very fun challenge
Great recs, I think I might try all of them.
Also, I got this in my main page feed 10 hours after upload, so you might have the Al Gore Rhythm pushing you. Congrats.
Great video! I will definitely check out some of those titles!
thanks! Glad you liked it, and I could share something new
this is a great list, sick video
What nice commentary. Thank you!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Lunacid is awesome. I played as the witch...I awm a huge fan of how you upgrade the weapons too
Yeah, it's very intuitive and encourages you to try out styles that might normally be outside your comfort zone if you want to see them all.
@@prettycody I havent started it since it was finished...my friend keeps telling me i gotta do it soon so we can talk about it
Thank you for your honest and entertaining feedback on games i would probably miss.
Happy to help. Thanks for watching
i was looking for another video while the outro was playing and got boob-snake jumpscared. Video of the year btw
Haha. I didn't stop to think that it would be scary, but it does kinda interrupt the silence. glad you liked the video.
HEAVY recommendation for Void Stranger. System Erasure is batting 2 for 2 right now. I would describe its initial appeal as somewhat similar to a very chewy Zelda puzzle, but its eventual appeal as something much closer to Outer Wilds, with mysteries that span ways you wouldn't have anticipated when you started the game.
I love the start of the vid. Yeah god damnit, my game backlog is INSANE. I seriously don't have enough time left on this planet to play all these games.
I could retire tomorrow and i'd still wont finish my back long. Not really.
Astalon was one of my favorite games i played last year. Void stranger was definitely the favorite this year.
Funny you mention people finding secrets a while after release because
.

About a month after release secret text during the true endings was found where the speakers are talking to each other despite being different universes.
this is the type of video a cool guy would make, you are a cool guy cody
Can't believe you have less than 2k subs. Great content!
Thanks! I appreciate it.
This is the kind of content a lot of people dont know they want. I am so glad I found this video
Glad you liked it! thanks for the kind words.
@@prettycody with the RUclips environment the way it is; you gotta support the kind of content you want to see more of.
And it is hard to find new games! So I for one seriously appreciate that you put the work in to tell us what is good out there.
Some content is like kinda good. This is full on generous, this video should blow up man you deserve it!!
I live this kinds of video
Good Video!
i like this video, u got a sub!:D
I really appreciate you mentioning that Astalon wouldn't change anyone's mind about Metroidvanias. I want to like those games, but I just can't get into them.
Great video, wishlisted Slave Princess Finne, why did she sell out her own kingdom out of 10 (I did purchase Helen's Mysterious Castle because that battle system activated my neurons very much)
Saving up my channel points to force you to play Super Metroid for long enough for you to learn to love it if it ever comes up on the randomizer.
Love the video, great recs. Maybe I missed it elsewhere in the video, but what game is that at 53:12?
y'know I *think* I labeled it someplace... hopefully... but I can definitely see me missing it too. That is Franzen a free RPG by Sumhead available on steam and itch.io
I actually know the creators for Hunt The Night, met them in a convention in my city and they were very friendly and showd me about all the hard work that goes into game making and even harder work for pixel art, they had to make so many frames for every single attack of the creatures and in general i love the game, very beautifull and fun.
More content like this please
Very cool video. Do you have plans to do any more similar indie gem review compilations? Maybe for other genres like turn based strategy, etc
Glad you liked it! I do plan on doing another "pile of indie games" style video soon
When is soon? I dunno for sure. I have 2 videos currently in the planning/writing/recording phase.
@@prettycody cool, Im subscribed!
I saw a trailer for Alterium Shift a while back and it looked kinda interesting. But now that Im seeing it again here, wow. This looks like a top tier JRPG. Its a bummer that its still in early access. I want to play this game.
It does a good job, and the devs seem story active so i have high hopes
Come on man, don't tease us. You used a bunch of its tracks, I'd love to see you cover Eastward. I found you through your Setsuna videos after I binged through the Tokyo RPG Factory trilogy of games, and it's nice to see in-depth videos on nicher games that are flawed but have value. This video was great, I sat through the whole thing in one go while I was working and it's kinda crazy how you can hold my attention through it all. Nice work
Commenting for the algorithm.
Haha, well good catch, and while I won't say it's the next video I will say you might be into something. Glad you like the videos, I appreciate the kind words.
My body is ready🧚♂
Aw man, I've been watching too many Omori videos. The adds for this video were to suicide crisis call lines.
Don't sell yourself short. Statistically, not all those carrots were unwilling.
Astalon is a delicious morsel
It's really surprising that game doesn't get talked about more
Brutal orchestra is definitely inspired by lisa lol. Have you played or heard of Dread Delusion?
I have now. looks like psychedelic Morrowind at a glance... which is a compliment. Thanks for the heads up.
I FUCKING LOVE VOID STRANGER
Sadly I couldn't find much to play this year. All of the indie games seemed like roguelikes or survival sandboxes ( the 2 genres I hate the most ). Also the only good RPG you showed was lunacid ( which I found last year in early access )
I patiently listened to your rule set and I understand and accept that my favorite indie game is not on your list. They are a bit to big to fit inside the rules nowadays. I was even going to tiptoe away quietly.
It's just that I am a firm believer in indie games, I don't play anything else. So I want to cheer on the small indie studios by reminding them how big and successful they can become if they keep working at their art.
Here goes. Larian Studios, the makers of Baldur's Gate 3 is an Indie Studio. The majority of their shares (70%) percent is owned by a husband and wife team that still go to work every day to earn a living. Tencent became a MINORITY (30%) share holder to finance the expansion that was needed to make Baldur's Gate 3. And Larian Studios has no publisher.
An indie in other words, even if it is a very big one nowadays. Good product, VERY good relations with the player community, sticking to what they know best, NOT obsessed by milking the player for every last penny, good at taking very well calculated risks.
If they could any indie can. So have at it ;-)
Maybe I missed it, but what is the name of that RPG Maker looking game that you showed a couple of times, one notably at 53:11?
I did a *horrible* job crediting that game and didn't do it until the very very end at around 1:02:25 or so -- and even then it's white on white. That game is called Franzen, it is free on Steam and Itch.io. Hopefully that helps.
what is the name of the track that you used in background of "lightning round"?
Iron carbine - Eastward ost
My only complaint with Helen's Mysterious Castle is the game becomes choppy when you fullscreen it
Helen's Mysterious Castle does NOT use default graphics and theres SO much graphical work put into it 😭
Oh. It absolutely doesn't. If I didn't speak to it clearly it's how it plays with your expectations when it starts, versus what's actually in the dungeons.
Huge fan of "One Way Heroics" and "Helen's Mysterious Castle"! I also want to give a shout-out to another game in RPG Maker, called "Last Scenario".
To explain it briefly - You start by searching for a lost cat (turns out it has been eaten by a gryffin) and immediately after that a stranger gives you an amulet, saying that you're descended from a legendary hero and now must go become a hero, too (All of which is a complete lie)
I'll have to check it out, thanks for the heads up. I loves me a well-made RPG maker title.
What game were you okay as an example of a mystery dungeon? 30:54
That would be 'Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate'
My indie pickup was definitely "False Skies" on steam ❤. Its an indie NES like rpg with the basic RPG mechanics like in the 1st Final Fantasy game. I hope you can take a look and make an opinion. It has also a demo version.
thanks for the heads up, I'll be sure to check it out.
Lunacid edges me so hard
Great video really shows that taking the indie pill is the right choice to find some bangers
Agreed. Always a good way to find cool new things, even if you gotta wade through a whole lotta games.
void stranger mentioned
Not sure what your definition of RPG is but some of these games definitely don’t fall under the umbrella of RPGs.
I can see that. RPG is a tough term to nail down, but, some of these like Void Stranger are definitely a stretch. Hope you still found something useful though.
What's the game you showed at 4:29?
Neon Abyss it should be here, for steam: store.steampowered.com/app/788100/Neon_Abyss/
tried hylics 2?
I haven't, but I have played the first and liked it. I should really check it out.
mmm Bippy
What is the game at the 2:33?
I for some reason didn't label that game until over an hour into the video. That's Franzen by Scumhead
End of Dyeus is the most underrated indie RPG, well maybe Potato Flowers in Full Bloom as well. Thats the worst part about good indie games, there is virtually zero relation between quality and how popular a game is. Sure some amazing games get popular but it's literally just luck.
End of Dyeus is my favorite open world RPG since Skyrim, I'd describe is as a mix of old 2d-Zelda mixed with Elder Scrolls. Sounds like a perfect mix right? Thats because it is. Just make sure to get the starting bow near the initial spawn point (spawn fountain) because without a range weapon it can be frustratingly hard. But thats the only hiccup. Others complain about the difficulty in the late game but honestly if the game feels too hard it means you haven't explored enough and found the items you need to beat the late game enemies.
i haven't heard of End of Dyeus, I'll have to check it out. thanks for the heads up
good video, just the bit saying retro style were a gold rush after shovel knight is nonsense. it is an aesthetic choice, as it previously were and as it will continue to be. indie games are mostly passioante projects, the triple AAAs are the ones that usually follow trends blindly.
Play pseudoregalia pls
“AL-oh-kate”
Not “ah-LOH-kate”
Why would you show a Bethesda game when talking about RPGs?
19:01
1000th like xd
:O thank you
VoidStranger have a very clear true ending that you seem to be not have seen. It's a game for a very specific type of person tho, one to that prefer games like LaMulana. It's my game of the year but I can't really recommend it to most people. But true end and the way you find a path to it is wild

Um... 'indie' is short for 'independant,' which means without a publisher. It has nothing to do with how big the game is. Bastion, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Super Meat Boy - those sold *incredibly well*, but they're still indie.
"Just don't think about how you have a limited number of hours on the planet and it's fine" - PC knowing exactly the anxiety that lay beneath all of my depression🥲
"Some Lufia 2 style dungeon puzzles" don't you do that, don't you dangle that carrot in-front of me 😩
The amount of self-deprecating humor in this that made me chuckle out loud was *chefs kiss*
