    Hello! This is the developer of Lawmage Academy. Thank you so much for including my game in your list! It's an honor to even be included among these outstanding RPG Maker games!
    To anyone who is curious, yes this is a mostly solo project. I say mostly because while I did nearly all of the work, I did commission the hand drawn portraits, some music tracks, and of course I used asset packs which was created by other people. I did the pixel art characters, weapons, and monsters. There's a lot to work on so I prioritized the game experience first because polishing the visuals can always come later.
    Thank you for your criticisms and suggestions as well! I can certainly work on polishing the maps and adding content to make player choice even more significant. Once I finish the base game, I'll make free updates that adds Clubs, Student Council system, Familiars (pets, sort of), Birthdays, Duel System and expanding on what's currently there. E.g.) Missions, new areas, new classes, exclusive friendship quests.
    It's a very exciting project and I intend to finish it in a few more years. I hope more people try it out themselves and just have fun with it for what it is. The demo is free and the standard first playthrough could be 4-5 hours.
    Once again thank you so much for including Lawmage Academy!

      Cheers! Huge respect to your work ethic for solo-dev'ing while working a full-time job (Verinius is a human rights lawyer, for anyone reading this). It'd be nigh impossible to finish a project of this scale without some external assistance, be it commissions or plugins. Certainly doesn't diminish the hard work. Looking forward to seeing future updates, keep it up!

    There is also an extra ending in The Witch's House (at least in the original one, I haven't played the MV version) where you wait in the first screen (where "Viola" wakes up) for about an hour. The vines will disappear and you can go home.
    It implies that the real Viola dies and it makes it even worse after you realize that the time you have to wait is also close to the amount of time it takes to beat the game... Which means that Viola really didn't have a lot of time (or will) left to live.

    "People who say Unity sucks or Unreal Sucks, couldn't hello world their way out of a shoebox"
    Absolute banger and also made me feel way better about learning how to develop games on something like GameMakerStudio 2 instead of something more higher level like unity or unreal.

    • @robinmattheussen2395
      @robinmattheussen2395 11 месяцев назад +10

      Unity is great if you want to actually get a game out the door and sell it on various platforms, but I'd never use it in a personal project myself. Like most off-the-shelf engines, it's pretty painful stuff IMO. As with any development process, I prefer libraries and individual tools that can be stuck together in a way that works for a specific project. But if you're a professional game developer, you unfortunately can't afford the luxury of not working with one of these engines.

    • @viscountrainbows2857

      The engine itself will never be the problem; plenty of amazing, legendary games have been basically made with shoestrings, prayer, and a fuckton of effort. Then there are games made in engines that ideally should pump out good games consistently, made by shysters, rushjobbed into oblivion by either greed, negligence, or both. An engine is only as good as the work one is willing to put into it. I couldn't play an expensive guitar any better than a cheap one, is what I'm saying. Hell to expand on this music nerd metaphor, my latest axe I picked up is probably one of the smoothest rides and best action I have felt yet out of the about maybe 6+ guitars I have had over the last 15 years I have been playing, and I got it free. Looked it up and it retails for not even 200 bucks. Price tags and name brands ain't always indicators of quality or lack thereof. Reputation, I will allow, has basically destroyed the once brimming possibility of Unity and Unreal being taken seriously because any shovelware sadist can pump out like 50 games in one year with them using God only knows how many pre-bought assets and no concept of game design. Also if you have made it so far, thanks for coming to my TED Talk, but also I am very much not a game designer; just an at time of writing 30-something very passionate about games, even if at the current moment, sadly stuck with some passable mobile titles for the time.

      If you have a good idea and work hard on it, you can do something great with any tool. The tool/engine doesn't matter: You matter.
      Never give up if you wanna create something. Look for people who support you with good feedback and help you grow.
      I think thats also a reason many people use "simpler" engines like RPGMaker or GameMaker. They are accessible but they also have great communities. I used RPGMaker for some of my first ideas as well and it has so many good tools and scripts made by the community.

    RPGmaker attracted a bunch of very creative people who didn't really have any programming experience or any desire to focus on that so if not for a prebuilt engine they simply never would have made anything at all, and what a shame that would be. If programmers can have programmer art, why can't artists have artist code? Unity and Unreal have replaced it as the "lazy" engine known for a bunch of garbage existing, but RPGmaker has quite the legacy that I always like hearing about, and the occasional people still making games in them to this day. Also glad to see someone else share my opinion on Yume Nikki that it feels like you really need to look things up, and if you have to do this enough in a game about exploration it starts to make you wonder why you're even playing it yourself. Since it got really popular through discussion online about finding things, maybe you weren't meant to find it yourself, but with that era long gone its left feeling a bit awkward.

    • @waterdrinker90
      @waterdrinker90 Год назад +61

      Also, I feel like RPGMaker gets a bad rep, because most people who never touched it think that it is just a pre-made game, where you just assemble its parts. This couldn't be farther from the truth. Even when working only with the assets included with the engine, it takes a whole lot of effort, time and knowledge of game design and programming logic to make a game in it. And for those who are familiar with the engine, seeing some of the wizardry that people pull off with it becomes even more impressive.

    • @ledumpsterfire6474
      @ledumpsterfire6474 Год назад +44

      If anything, Unity is the concrete proof for why you can't fault the tools for having bad games made with them. Unity is many times more powerful than RPG Maker, yet still just has heaps of shovelware, while there are some shining gems with RPG Maker too.
      To top it off, there are games made with totally custom from-scratch engines that are utter crap too. Should we blame the languages they used to build the engine at that point?

    • @Nassifeh
      @Nassifeh Год назад +10

      @@ledumpsterfire6474 Any good tool can be used to make bad stuff in greater quantities than it can be used to make good stuff. And will be, probably. You can't make people more productive without that being more visible in the people who are laziest. We saw it with stuff like Photoshop. Contrast something like the AI art tools where no amount of skill can make them give humans consistently correct numbers of fingers or teeth at the moment. It's possible for tools to create consistently bad quality output even from skilled users, but there's no reason to think that's true of either Unity or RPG Maker.

    • @IDOLL_Dev
      @IDOLL_Dev Год назад +16

      One quick addition to the "not having programming experience" argument - I know how to program and I still really enjoy RPG Maker precisely because it already comes with assets.
      Even as a programmer I think hating on RPG Maker is part of a larger problem where people think programming is the hardest and most important thing in GameDev. Good games aren't just "programming + art + music + writing", Game Design is it's own skill - and you can only get good at it by **making games**, putting yourself out there, not by learning all those skills individually and then show them off in a game.
      RPG Maker is super great for making stuff for the sake of making stuff!

I live in a basement suite so I actually don't have any of those things, but hopefully you catch my meaning 😀

      It would be kinda neat since instead of being chased around you would be the one causing the chasing instead, kinda like a reverse fnaf in a way, sadly the game don't really have such huge fanbase to the point of fangames existing much less super well made sprite fanfics (or fanfics in general) but who knows maybe someday that will happen that game didn't got forgotten after all.

    It's an Earthbound-inspired JRPG set in the dream world of the titular kid, Jimmy. The world of the game is filled with dreamlike imagery made out of everything Jimmy experienced and processed in his mind, be it actual events from his daily life, things he saw on TV, heard and misinterpreted, etc. Just like Earthbound, it is equally charming and funny as it is disturbing, the latter of which comes up as you dig deeper into Jimmy's psyche and uncover his fears and trauma.
    I could write a few paragraphs about everything I love about this game, but I think it's better to just title-drop it and let you (or anybody else reading this comment who might be interested in the game) check it out for yourself. Imo it's a fantastic game through and through with impressive amount of content for a project done by one guy and one I always feel the need to promote whenever possible because I believe it is as worthwhile as any other known RPG Maker titles like Lisa or Omori.

    Hi, RPG maker dev and regularly RPG Maker game streamer here,
    You're doing the RPG Maker community a big favor with this video. I've often talked about how the RPG Maker is very insular with it's community, which tends to be a double edged sword. The folks don't seem to care much about indie devs outside of the RPG Maker circle, but on the other hand, it's one of the most inviting communities - I get way more interaction from RPG Maker devs on my videos & reviews far more than whenever I review an indie game built in a different engine. I'm certain you have likely gotten many comments from other friendly RM devs.
    Thanks for the video. Whether you want me to or not, I'm going to send you my game once it's finished in a few months 😉

Not only did both really influence my music taste to this day, but they also introduced to me the idea that games can just be whatever, as long as the experience of playing them is interesting. As a professonal level/game designer today, both games really stand out among the many examples I pull resources from, and I hope to one day create something in a game that's as interesting, unexpected and evocative as when Ruth White's spoken word poem "Spleen" starts playing in the Blood Cave in Space Funeral. The vision behind that segment especially is truly one-of-a-kind.

    Thanks for covering Fear & Hunger in a sober way. Btw I would highly recommend getting dash in character creation and coming back to it.
    Also there are guarenteed spawns for herbs in the upper levels, and there are advancement mechanics but not traditional levels or exp. The game is still brutal, and I haven't told you even more tips to make it easier, but I think the key of Fear & Hunger is that it deliberately tries to misdirect you with a blunt fist of GRIMDARK, where the actual game is learning how to play the game. Eventually you'll be abusing the mechanics to your advantage so you can counter-act the randomness. Good players at fear & hunger are REALLY good.
    What I'm trying to say is, don't give up hope that you can get better at the game as you play it. Even when the game opens up a new present box of 'fuck you'.

    When I was a teenager, I was working on an RPG Maker 95 project (I think it was 95.. couldn'tve been any later than XP though) .. of course I eventually gave up and forgot about it.. found it several years later and was surprised how good it was. Normally I look back at old stuff and cringe, but this was one of those rare moments where I felt like I should've kept going with what I was doing at the time. Even my sprite and tile art was pretty on point for my age. If I remember correctly, I ran in to some logic/technical issues and the only solution I could find was to go back and redo 75% of what I had done. RPG Maker is a solid concept. It's like musical instruments.. if a person has true talent and determination, great things can be made from even the most primitive tools.

    44:45 The coin flips are peak masochist design. They could simply be simple RNG hidden from the player without their input, but by giving the illusion of choice to them, and making it obvious, it ends up being like pouring lemon on your own wounds. Heck this still is the case with the new Lucky Coin item in the sequel and iirc it was added to the first F&H in one of the new updates. Getting both coins wrong feels awful, but even winning with 2 coins can too because it feels like you just wasted one of them.
    On another note about F&H, knowledge is one of the most important things to actually get good at the game. What items can and do what, where to find certain things, hell IIRC some one use items like Throwing Knifes are (or were) OP. There is a lot more to it than what is explicit, and while it can be a burden to play, that is the point, to travel the dungeon is painful and only those who truly persevere can beat it. I love it.

    • @Majuular
      @Majuular  Год назад +6

      Great point, if the coin flips were a hidden mechanic, it might make the game feel a *bit* less masochistic. As another commenter mentioned, you can use those lucky coins to increase your chance, so no doubt it's evil by design. if you put a beartrap down IN VIEW of an enemy, 99% of the time they will walk around it
    Hell, you can stop a certain one hit killing piramid head expy from following you by placing a bear trap in a choke point while he sees you doing so.
    And that is generally how to best use them, chokepoints (which will cause enemies to try and run them over even if they see you putting them down, depending on the enemy) or with planning (being aware of an enemy, you put down a bear trap before they are aware of you and then bait them into it)
    Thankfully, you dont trigger your own traps, so you're free to run over them as much as you like.

      I also find an appreciation for smaller works simply by virtue of them being small.
      Part of it's that your expectations are lower. You're not expecting a triple-A product, and so not only do the good parts feel more significant, but you're invested more because you're not holding the game at the same distance you would if you were expecting higher quality.
      There's also that you know you're getting a more direct creative expression, since these projects are the work of one person, or a small team, whereas larger games involve dozens or hundreds of people's input, which may create a "better" overall product, but, in so doing, leaves you with products that rarely have more than the rudiments of a voice.

    Here's a recommendation I haven't seen yet; End Roll.
    End Roll is an actual RPG, where you play as Russell, a young boy who is taking part in the "Happy Dream Rehabilitation Program", and must explore your/his dreams with an end goal in mind. I won't say much more as I'd rather people play it, but besides the story intrigue, this game has; a big 'world' inside Russell's head to explore with lots of extra content to find (areas, special events, secret bosses or characters, etc), a somewhat basic but pretty fun and engaging (with cool sprite animation!!) battle system, really good sprite and portrait artwork, a loveable and Memorable cast in a largely ominous and oppressive setting............ all of which informs you of who Russell, the person, is.
    I love Russell. He's my fucked up son and I highly recommend this game. Warning, though, it is, Bleak. Maybe not the absolute bleakest, there's humor in there, but it can get dismal, so if you're sensitive to anything read the content warnings.
    Also, while I'm here, that creator has two other (translated) games, Farethere City, and Walking on a Star Unknown. Both are good in their own right, give them a look!!! I even did speedruns of Farethere City lol

    Something to note about The Witch's House, there IS a Prequel Manga that talks more in dept about the Witch herself prior to the events to give more context as to WHY she is the way she is. If you are curious about that kind of detail, Go search for 'The Witch's House: The Diary of Ellen' but I also recommend not if you want a bit more vagueness to be intact for the game's ending and overall wordless plot as i know some people prefer less information in this kind of story.

    I know people have already flooded the comments with OFF, so I'll only add that 'Suits: A Business RPG' was developed in the wake of OFF blowing up really big on tumblr, so I think that might lend to that feeling of...derivativeness? maybe? like, it's working from a lot of similar concepts while having a very different main story/ takeaway. it feels like that's necessary context
    that said, I had no idea the dev was making a sequel, and as you said, making ANYTHING to completion is a feat in and of itself, so hopefully the dev can learn from what worked and make something really neat

      My only problem with his section on To The Moon was him using the phrase "her autistic tendencies worsen over time." From my interpretation at least, it sounds like he's saying that autism is some sort of brain disease that degenerate over time, which is straight up untrue. And as someone on the spectrum that kinda hurt. It's a disorder, but I and many others just call it a nuerotype due to the negative associations people make with the word disorder. It's a small thing to take issue with, but for some reason I did.

    Just finished marathoning all of your videos while grinding for party EXP in BOF: Dragon Quarter. As I've seen other comments say, you instantly shot up to one of my favorite video producers on the site. Your cadence and sense of humor align with mine very closely and make for peak entertainment. What I especially like is your dedication to seeing the absolute best in games, which is why you like JRPGs and even RPG maker games where so any others would dismiss them for surface level reasons. Subbed and taste in video essays forever shifted up a notch.
    Something you may have not internalized while doing research on Toilet in Wonderland is that it was part of a yearly contest in Japan where users of the VIP board on 5ch (previously 2ch) collaborate to make games. This genre is loosely called the VIPRPG genre. The funny thing is that Toilet in Wonderland is very much a standard "VIPRPG", deploying what is known as "VIP humor". As weird as Toilet in Wonderland may have seemed, it's completely normal in VIPland and was made with that in mind for a popular contest of VIP games. Those who like that kind of high-quality cutscene direction and wacky humor have a never-ending feast with VIPRPGs: as of my last count there was over 10,000 VIPRPGs, thousands of which were posted in contests, hundreds of which were high-quality enough to win awards in the contests, and finally, even more thousands of which were not posted in contests and just get dumped on random 5ch threads. These are called "thread games" and can be either the craziest shit of all time or (more likely) complete garbage. You can get an overview of VIPRPGs by googling "VIPRPG and もしも (Moshimo) Games: An Introduction". I think someone of your taste would like quite a lot of VIPRPGs, although unfortunately it is EXTREMELY rare for them to be translated. Toilet in Wonderland and Helen's Mysterious Castle are the only 2 I know of. Some which I think you would like are Aberrant2, ウォーターは俺の娘 (a full remake of DQ5 with VIPRPG characters), and the Dogma series (エピタフ 相対の相対et al). There's also games with no gameplay, just cutscenes in a movelike-presentation, such as the カマソッソ series and 詩歌を嗜む, which will surely awe you with their presentation.
    Anyway, with that infodump aside, I wanted to mention an RPG maker game called "Tobira no Densetsu." After seeing all your videos I am 100% confident you would love Tobira no Densetsu. It is a lovingly crafted JRPG with an incredibly well-told main quest that spans roughly 100 hours with frequent links into the side content of the open world; a running joke is that basically any NPC you meet will somehow end up relevant in the main plot one way or another. It has so much detail in the gameplay there's even a Skies of Arcadia-esque airship battle system. If you google its name you'll see a review I wrote; to date it remains my favorite JRPG against all the staunch competition of even commercial games, and judging by your appreciation of for example Tales of Symphonia side content you would love it too for sure. It's unfortunately Japanese only, but perhaps something to keep in mind if you ever succumb to the lust of knowing the original language for these games. It's extremely worth playing for anyone who likes JRPGs.
    Oh, and for something completely different, try looking up The Happy Fun Game on Nepchan for your next RPG maker video. (click release page for the link to the download). 100+ hour long balls hard action game made in RPG maker with 15 zelda-length dungeons. :)
    Ok that's it. I have some autism for RPG maker games, sorry if this was treading ground you in your vast mindscape were already familiar with. I will now return to silence and wait for new videos. Keep up the good work.
