Hi, I'm Cody and I'm not actually pretty.
Astlibra Revision Review | The game that took one person 15 years to make
Sure it looks ugly at a glance... but there's something special under all those stock jpegs.
If you spend 15 years making your game, are you making the choice to be old school or accidentally stumbling into it? Either way, Astlibra provides a classic action RPG fare that you don't see a lot any more... but is it fun? Spoiler: Yes. It is.
Games in the intro:
Zanki Zero: Last Beginning
Eternal Ring
Silent Hope
Ys: Memories of Celceta
Ender Lillies
Brandish: The Dark Revenant
Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls

Like a hog seeks truffles, I seek weirdo indie games in my spare time and it's time to finally lead you to the delightful, delicious treats I've found.. only for you to pull me away so that you can sell the truffles. This metaphor fell apart quickly, but I *am* a lot like a hog. No one can take this 1963 Ohio county fair "fine hog" blue ribbon I won. No one. 0:00 - Intro 2:45 - Vagante 9:53 - A...

I miss so many fun games here in the United States, but that's okay! because fan translators are out there being amazing. Inspired by a social media photo of a game I'd never seen before I set out on a quest to play something new. I did some light reviews and it was a lovely change of pace, but if you crave big RPG reviews like I do, fear not - that one is already getting footage captured. Do y...
I am Setsuna Review | Can it compare to the classics?

Forewarning that I spoil the plot pretty hard so check the chapter markers if you're skimming around. In between gearing up for my next video I managed to beat this game and it got me thinking a lot about nostalgia and it's value in gaming and when maybe it works a little less... which made my next video delayed but hey! A surprise video with a surprise length. Some day I'll keep the script sho...

I bet if I was making videos in 2019 this would have been a fun, timely review, but I wasn't so we're doing it today for some reason. Does this port of a 16 year old PSP game hold up? Does tri-Ace nail the landing? Only one way to find out! I know this is a long one. I tried to break this into chapters since I imagine this won't be a single sitting sort of affair. Chapters: 00:00 - Intro 1:52 -...
Ronyx is just Old Marth. Also this game is Startrek 👀
Why is this game so expensive on the third market? They want like $79.99 for a game that IGN gave a 7.5 and GameSpot gave it a 7. Is it really a hidden gem?
Very cool video. Do you have plans to do any more similar indie gem review compilations? Maybe for other genres like turn based strategy, etc
Glad you liked it! I do plan on doing another "pile of indie games" style video soon
When is soon? I dunno for sure. I have 2 videos currently in the planning/writing/recording phase.
@@prettycody cool, Im subscribed!
44:09 nop it was the village daughter who went to check the seal and then got possessed. Melfice killed her out of mercy and for killing her he go possessed. The reason he turned evil is cause he wanted to be the greatest swordsman and for wanting to be more powerful he succumbed the possession cause his will is low. 44:54 the cool thing about the first battle is that depending on how you fight that battle is what gives or takes difficulty of the second battle. 52:55 Zera Innocentius hence Zero Innocence It's Latin, and all the singing in this game its Latin.
Wow one of the best videos about one of my favorite jrpgs. You're pretty good cody
God damn I love this game.
I finished Grandia 2 recently and just wanted to say you’ve made a great video on it. There’s not many out there so I appreciate this one and all your work on it. Also you used Octopath Traveler music so 10/10
Major spoiler. My biggest issue with the game is the end when you lose the boy and marrig dies, leaving you with only elena and millenia. All the items on those members are gone and all grinding done for them during the game felt wasted.
Great video. I don't remember if you mentioned it, but did Jack want to kill Chaos?
It's lightly implied. Jack's greatest strength is subtlety.
This game doesn't look like my particular cup of tea, but I always enjoy your reviews! And I like the shorter form content too. I feel like short and long form both have their strengths. 😄
I decided to play this game because every steam review talked about how incredible the story was and man IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The overall plot is pretty generic but the execution is absolutely incredible, i COULD NOT predict how this shit would develop at all and it definitely did not go the route i expected it to. I can't even complain about the review not talking much about the story because LITERALY EVERYTHING IN THIS FUCKING GAME IS A SPOILER. Anyway, if you wanna get high, this shit is better than meth, both the visuals and story feels like a fever dream.
It's look like interesting game to play The visual kind of remind me of old ps1 game with pre-rendering 3d background
The catgirl being pixellated on zoom out was extremely funny to me.
Haha, glad you enjoyed it. I love a good visual gag.
before i watch this, i just wanna say that its nice to see someone else covering this underrated kino - but man, it just doesnt sit well with me to call this game "ugly". 😭😭 i mean, i getchu... but it still just doesnt feel right. 😭
Aww oh no, hopefully the conclusion of the video paints me as less of an Astlibra bully. I do agree the style is very atypical and unique - it ends up being part of the charm.
Holy frick, 15 years making a video game. The game developer must have really believed in themselves and its concept if they worked on it for that long.
Yeah, there's some real passion behind this one! I don't think I could do it, honestly. The very idea of folding laundry can sometimes stop me in my tracks.
Love the additional shorter vids, great stuff. Keep it up!
Thank you! I appreciate it. It was fun to make so I am really glad to see people liking it.
VANILLAWARE MENTION 🎉🎉🎉
The hope is if I mention them enough they will Port their games to PC.
I found the sweaty soles reference and it was 100% NOT what i was expecting 😂 awesome vid buddy
Astalon is a delicious morsel
It's really surprising that game doesn't get talked about more
I'm glad you made this, heard about the game seemed okay and I didn't bother further. Now you've convinced me this could be a good time.
Yesssss, join me. Hit the png caterpillars.
Is your name supposed to be pretty as in cute or pretty as in a moderately high degree?
I- I don't know. 🥺
@@prettycody You're a moderately high degree of cute, Cody.
My life has peaked after that Patron shoutout 🥰
"this video is stupid, much like me." Well, that kind of self-depreciating humor is exactly what I live for. have a sub.
Great vid man
Thank you!
IMO masterpiece. The backgrounds and terrain looks extremely janky, and now I know why:) Definitely one of my favourites after clocking 90h+ and 100%'d it. The story got me engaged much more than I expected and for two weeks I was living this game, playing it every time I had any chance. The translation on launch wasn't really bad, kinda of bearable and you get used to it (as with some other jank in the game), unless we were talking about skills - then it was straight up terrible, and I dont know if it is all fixed. It was extremely inaccurate is lots of cases, and some skills had completely wrong translation. I remember getting constantly dunked on by enemies starting chapter... IIRC 4 or 5. You unlock one of the Karon skills that was supposed to give you resistance to all abnormalities by 10 and increase break damage by 1.5x. Turns out, someone from JP community drops by, gives a heads up on wrong translation and gives proper one - skill increases resistance by 100, but you are receiving 1.5x damage. With how damage is calculated against your defense, I think the difference was much bigger than 1.5x, since when I was testing it on game epilogue (80 hours in when I found out about this), same monster was hitting me nearly 3x harder with skill on. If not going for achievements, I strongly recommend easy or normal - hard was... lets say I played half of the time with skill that makes you deal more damage but die in one hit, and it made game so much easier. Astlibre has also DLC, and if we are talking about fanservice, the DLC has much more - since you can wear most outfits shown in the game (be it either NPC, enemy or one of the cast), like succubus outfit or maid outfit. And while the type of game is based on gameplay from base game epilogue, it still provides different spells, items (mostly, there are some base game items, either unchanged or just used graphics), skills or link tree.
I still need to play the dlc. But this game really blew me away. I'm glad I gave it a chance.
I've been curious about this game for a while, actually, so thank you for your insight! It is really interesting to find more about it. I will defo get it one of these days
More PrettyCody is a good thing. Your writing and delivery is creative and hilarious. And your review picks are on point too.
This review was the perfect type of weird I love it
A game I don't know but covered by my favourite up and coming content creator? Let's fucking go!! Was just watching your Star Ocean video since I just wrapped up my playthrough of it so this was great timing.
oh, thank you for the kind words! Glad you're liking the content.
Not entirely related to the overall topic, but what game is the first shown for the first few seconds of the intro? I recognize it and I'm wracking my brain trying to remember the name.
No worries. I will list them out in the description but you were looking at Zanki Zero for that one.
This is one that I couldn't get through the demo because it felt... not nice to control. This was at or before launch. The RPG/Anime look hooked me, but there was definitely a lack of polish in the gameplay that was really offputting for me at the time. Maybe I should add it to a price alert at $5 and add it to my Steam backlog in the future.
I had that same feeling, and I dunno if it's stockholme syndrome or not, but it did start to feel good once I unlocked a bit more. It'd be a good on-sale snag for sure
@@prettycody Had same feeling - it gets a while to get used to the controls, and after couple of hours into the game unlocking certain Karon skills it gets massively better.
It starts to feel better after you unlock some possession skills and I think lighter weapons really helps with smoothness until you get used to it
I was completely enraptured by this game. It left me with quite the sizable void after I finished it. Thanks for talking about one of my favorites :)
ASTLIBRA Review! I've done a good deal of thinking on this game. The way that stock photos and other publicly available resources were spliced together stuck a certain chord that took me a while to pin down. I did manage to figure it out. It's my crippling nostalgia for the browser/Flash games of my youth that this game manages to strike, creating a style amalgamated from a thousand different corners of the internet. Perhaps a good descriptor would be 'curated.'
That's a good way of putting it. The game really is very thoughtful with all its choices.
I'm glad someone else likes Brandish
Heck yeah, Brandish is good. You get it.
Most their ultimate weapons at the end of the game are literally from Chrono Trigger and make reference to having one belonged to a "legendary hero."
Hey thanks for watching as always, this one is a shorter video. I am not walking away from longer form content, after I am done moving I hope to get rolling on some longer content, but hopefully this makes a nice viewing experience while I put that together. Do you hate this format? Please feel free to let me know.
Definitely a fan of your long-form stuff, but this was fun too. Variety is the spice of life and all that.
This has been on my wishlist for a while because I love weird, awkward ARPGs and anime. I'll get it next time it's on sale.
hello pretty cody, just leaving a comment for the algorithm, and to say that this was a fun watch. i only vaguely remembered radiant historia as "one of those jrpgs with weird titles while i was busy playing borderlands or some shit" and never really considered it. now that im more into jrpgs its cool to go back and look at some of the ones that flew right under my nose. appreciate the work that went into this behemoth
I FUCKING LOVE VOID STRANGER
Helen's Mysterious Castle does NOT use default graphics and theres SO much graphical work put into it 😭
Oh. It absolutely doesn't. If I didn't speak to it clearly it's how it plays with your expectations when it starts, versus what's actually in the dungeons.
I just found this game this year and loved it!
It holds up! I hope they port it to something modern someday so more people can enjoy it.
@@prettycody it deserves that. Really great video, best one on the game I’ve seen
r u gonna make a dark souls retrospective?? no one plays these jrpgs but that would be really cool
Now definitely need the Second Story R's video
This is one of my favorite RPGs from the PS2 era. And despite how much I enjoyed the first game, Grandia 2 remains my series favorite by a large margin. It was such a good story and good characters and excellent gameplay. There's still some tracks (Cancao do povo, in its various forms) that hit me hard when going back to listen to them (emotions are still something I try to suppress normally). The TIO bit in the automaton factory reminds of of Robo's character mission. Not that that is a bad thing, it's just "easy" to go to (even though it usually works). When these games came out in the HD remaster collection, this was a day 1 purchase for me on Switch and I loved replaying both games. Both games also still have such satisfying conclusions (and/or ending sequences).
Yeah, I'm really glad I gave it a chance. I missed it as a youngin' so it's really fun to go back and play it for the channel.
"Anytime Millenia is asleep... Millenia can actually take over" (30:56)
Oh nice catch, haha. I went right in a circle there.
I recently found my old copy in my mom's old car's glovebox and I'm surprised to see videos from within the last year discussing and showing this highly underrated gem
Well, happy to help provide a niche video on the subject haha.
Love watching you point out a bunch of things that aren't belts and calling them belts...
I don't often like to brag, but it's my specialty.
I ended up stopping with the original on the DS. When the new version was put out, I saw the QoL and art upgrades and jumped on it. It still took time, but I did beat it eventually. I think the additions made it a much easier/pleasurable experience. But it's easily one of the best 3DS RPGs and I loved it in the end, despite needing some help from guides later in the game. I also agree with the combat comments in that it can be annoying to HAVE TO pay more attention to even the most minor encounters. It has that in common with the likes of Octopath Traveler, where you have to be massively overleveled to ignore an enemies weaknessess and not exploit the mechanics.
Lol I finished all three dlcs yesterday I really enjoyed it and even tho jack is jack he has his reasons
Jack is charming despite it all. He hates chaos, sure, but who doesn't. Relatable guy in the end.
Underrated AF game. Will definitely sub for more!
You remind me of pretty Patrick and I like it
A compliment of the highest order! Thank you. I only hope puppycat enjoys my content
@@prettycody I am 100% sure he would unleash the wrath of the cosmos to see you eat a bowl of mashed potatoes I like your channel too I just don’t have loads of access to the wrath of the cosmos
