  • Somehow released at the wrong time every time, Radiant Historia still has endured. I want to take the deepest look I can at what makes this game so special, despite it being perhaps left to languish on Nintendo's no-longer-supported handheld.
    Chapters:
    00:00:20 - Intro/A History of Historia
00:05:22 - A cursory look at the changes to Perfect Chronology
00:08:23 - Setting up the Story
    00:17:55 - The Battle System
00:31:18 - Beginning of the Spoiler Synopsis
    01:09:35 - Music? Don't Mind if I DO-sic
01:41:47 - Perfect Edition story comparisons
    01:57:21 - Closing Thoughts

Can't wait to watch this, I still have a copy of the game on my old 3ds and play it from time to time. I really like the combat system

I finally got around to watching this behemoth of a video. Once again, I really love how you cover games that are often overlooked like I Am Setsuna and this. The retrospective format lets me experience the games via proxy that I probably would've passed due to RPG's being too long and life being too short. The format also lets the video flow naturally and keeps me engaged rather than it feeling like a sectioned off review. Commenting 4 da algorithm, good video

That was a really good review. Really, excellent video.
By the way, I'm also one of those that think the Perfect Chronology content was "too perfect".
Just want to add that I think that RH:PC has some of the best English voice acting I've heard in a JRPG. They did some tremendous work there.

True! I actually had a rant that got cut from this script about how pretty much this whole cast is hardened pros who all have a ton of anime and games under their belt.

It's me. I have an allergy to conveniently happy endings.
Thanks for covering this one. I picked it up on the DS a long time ago, but the random battles being so... meaty... turned me off, though I loved the concept and plot. Great stuff as always, Cody.

Just now playing this game for the first time even though I’ve known about it for a while and so far it’s been so great it’s such a cool idea. I’ll finish the video once I’m done with the game but I’m glad to see people still talking about it

hello pretty cody, just leaving a comment for the algorithm, and to say that this was a fun watch. i only vaguely remembered radiant historia as "one of those jrpgs with weird titles while i was busy playing borderlands or some shit" and never really considered it. now that im more into jrpgs its cool to go back and look at some of the ones that flew right under my nose. appreciate the work that went into this behemoth

  • @TheColdOne

I ended up stopping with the original on the DS. When the new version was put out, I saw the QoL and art upgrades and jumped on it. It still took time, but I did beat it eventually. I think the additions made it a much easier/pleasurable experience.
But it's easily one of the best 3DS RPGs and I loved it in the end, despite needing some help from guides later in the game.
I also agree with the combat comments in that it can be annoying to HAVE TO pay more attention to even the most minor encounters. It has that in common with the likes of Octopath Traveler, where you have to be massively overleveled to ignore an enemies weaknessess and not exploit the mechanics.

This game makes me happy in ways I don't even have words for. The English language isn't robust enough to capture the sentiment in mere consonants and vowels.

Radiant Historia was something I never even knew existed for the DS - so when it was rereleased on the 3DS, I wasn't thrilled with the old DS style graphics and initially didn't think of buying it. But eventually, one day, I was bored and was like "fuck it, guess I'll give it a shot since the reviews seem good" and was pleasantly surprised. It was by no means the perfect video game, but the music was great, the story was well written and the additions made to the 3DS version feels like a nicely wrapped bow on top of an already great game. I saw some older fans critique the new ending, but personally I'm a sucker for having a happy 'true' ending.

I actually have both versions of Radiant Historia.
I got the original from a GameStop back when they sold loose DS games, then I got the 3DS version from a Best Buy.
I love this game (both versions) and I think you did the game and story justice!

Nice retrospective! Here's hoping they do port it to the Switch, because you've got me interested in trying it. And also, if you do end up 2 for 2 at predicting game comebacks, then I have a few games I may need you to work your precognitive magic on. 😂

I should really finish this game again some time. I've gone back a few times, but I only ever get a few hours in before I drop it. But it's one of my favorite games that I can think of, because I am a sucker for time travel and using information from one time to solve a problem in another.

If you had handheld systems there was never a Sonic dark are, there was never a Castlevania dark age, there was never a Mega Man dark age and most importantly the so called JRPG dark age of the late 2000s/early 2010s never happened.

New art for me. If for no other reason than having portraits for multiple moods. That honestly made me stop playing the original release; what's the point of portraits if a character always wears the same expression? And the sprite work wasn't very animated either, making vital scenes feel dull and lifeless. While the new art doesn't have quite the same sense of style, it at least helps convey emotion better, which to me is 100x more important.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get over 3DS’s huge portrait art downgrade. It personally offends me 😂
