- I bet if I was making videos in 2019 this would have been a fun, timely review, but I wasn't so we're doing it today for some reason. Does this port of a 16 year old PSP game hold up? Does tri-Ace nail the landing? Only one way to find out!

When I played this release on the PSP, I don't remember having any trouble with the game at all. In fact I barely remembered anything from my PSP play through. But when I played this Switch port, with its "rebalancing", I ran into tons of difficulty spikes. I had already finished that Treasury dungeon before the game FORCED me to use the crafting system just to survive in that hi-tech Purgatorium dungeon, so I couldn't make the overpowered swords you need those luxurious swords for. Now I had to start grinding for skill points just to give people the proper skills for crafting, as up until then I only cared about the skills that gave the most stats. This resulted in me using tons of save scumming to spam crafting attempts over and over until I was able to make the best armor and weapons for all of my characters, then I could finally win the fights against those robots in the hi-tech Purgatorium area.
I'm someone who usually hates crafting in RPGs and tries to ignore it. The Switch port of Star Ocean 1 doesn't let you do that.

your prayers and mine, have been answered, Second Story R is coming to Every modern platform except for the XBOX, I have pre ordered it, and its not like the remaster of the first game, ITS A WHOLE NEW HD-2D STYLE WITH NEW COMBAT MECHANICS, i played through the PC demo and oh my god cant wait to continue the full game. Play it, you will love it, ad make a vid about it, win win!

The crafting system reminds me of Baten Kaitos somehow, but maybe just in the vibes, they are not actually similar.
Perhaps I should let's play Star Ocean on my channel after I'm done with Rance IX and Chained Echoes 🤔
Ive never played Baten Kaitos but i know its made by tri-Crescendo which was the sound team for tri-Ace games and even did work for tales of(funny given the history)... Im pretty sure it was their first game that they actually had a major part in the design along with Monolith soft. tri-Crescendo would also go on to make Eternal Sonata.
6:50 mic change. i use a stereo system so it is a bit easier to tell the difference, mostly just a lack of low end in your voice. still has good crisp mids and highs. also, you have a very soothing voice to listen to. will be subbing:]

I gotta say i'm ADDICTED to long-form analysis and criticism, so i'm really hoping you can find it in your heart to emulate or play the entire series and give this franchise the love and attention it's sadly been missing (the other Entire SO series retrospective is only 2x as long as this, and that's just not enough time tbh).
When i say Addicted, i can't wait for the 24 hours Witcher 3 retrospective that's undoubtedly in the works.

i remember playing this when it first came out on switch. i adored it but i got so annoyed by the encounter rate, and ilia would not stop spamming the same move over and over (she had plenty of other skills to use) that i had to take a break after finishing it the first time. i love the SO series tho and the first two games are just so charming with their expansive crafting and recruitment systems. i do plan on going back in and replaying the entire series at some point
tales of eternia was quite possibly one of my favorite games of all time. same for start ocean 2nd story. im old shhhh. snes and ps1 imo are the peak of rpgs

I've only really played a single Star Ocean game before and honestly, while I've never been a huge JRPG fan outside of the more popular classics like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, this video makes me really want to dive into it more and see what all is out there. It's definitely a genre that suffers from some serious bloat, but after watching this video it's made me really interested in digging through the dirt to find some of the gems that i overlooked in the past.

You will have an opportunity to avenge your younger self upon the secound game since it has now been remade for modern consoles. It releases in early November 2023.
I've been playing it actually. The remake is great so far. I'm almost to the boss i got stuck at before.

When i first discovered this video i decided not to watch it because i did actually want to play the entire star ocean series through at some point. i'd only played the last hope and i actually liked it which i know is an unpopular opinion. but i'm back after playing this game that i saw people saying "you might as well skip and go onto star ocean 2." i don't agree with that at all. sure there were difficulty spikes. the encounter rate is too high until you really learn to manage it. and the backtracking is truly offensive. like the most annoying thing about the game. but the story is actually pretty decent. the combat is simple fun and i think it's a worthwhile experience. im glad to see you thought so too. i'm so excited for the second story remake coming in fall.
I doubt I'm the first to draw this parallel but the end boss is extremely similar to a Star Trek character named Khan. He is the leader of a group of genetically enhanced humans and his motives in the show weren't that special but in the second Star Trek movie he really hates the main characters for exiling him to a planet that ended up having some disaster and becoming a sterile desert planet and he steals a device used for terraforming to turn it into a weapon (which would arguably make him akin to a god, since he could create and destroy life on any planet) plus there's the environmental connection and him being a synthetically enhanced man...

Well. I had to stop watching the video at just after the 20 minute mark because I realized I might want to play the game.

I would've liked to hear what you think of Ashlay, T'nique, & Erys as party members. It's too bad that you missed out on Ioshua & Mavelle as well. There's a certain room you would have had to watch out for if you had Cyuss, Ioshua, & Mavelle. There's an optional scene in one dungeon where you could lose Mavelle. If you have Ashlay & Ioshua, then she'll be replaced by Erys so it's no big deal. If you took Cyuss instead, then Mavelle just dies if you trigger the scene.
Yeah, I think down the line I'd like to try again and shoot for the "tree" ending. The Cyuss regret is real lol
@@prettycody I'd have recommended trying out Star Ocean 2 as well, but sadly the English version was only released on PS1 & PSP last I checked. It'd be nice if it got a re-release onto consoles & PC.

If you're into Star Ocean games, I'd strongly recommend the Lunar games. Just don't get the one on the DS.

I don't know. Is it just me or do the character portraits look like different characters from the sprites. Some how the designs on the SD pixelated sprites have 1000 times more personality than the bland HD character portraits.
The game has a bit of a mishmash of different styles, what with being basically a remaster of a remaster.
I think the sprites and FMVs are basically the same as the PSP version, although they seem to have wildly different styles, and the character portrait are an attempt to adapt the style of the SNES versions of the characters to current standards.
You don't have to be smart to watch Star Trek; that's why they made Voyager!
I've never seen Voyager, but something deep in my person tells me this is a good burn.
What's funny about the UP3 in this series is that you do find out why it's necessary in the 4th game.
Also, it is a common mistake to recruit Cyuss, locking you out of a better companion who teaches Roddick his best techniques...
The other big mistake is entering the one optional room you have no idea would trigger a scene that permakills Mahvel.
...oh dear, I just realized that one of my personal favorite characters is voiced by Vic. Sore point...
