Why I LOVE Star Ocean First Departure

- I've played a lot of games in my day. You could even say unlimited games! But I won't reference that, no I will not.
Star Ocean is a series that has consistently remained one of my favorites since early child, playing a part in each period of my life. It's time to take a step back and pull them apart, starting with First Departure; a game that took me years to figure out why I loved it so much.
C'mon numbnuts, we're going on an adventure! To space.
Just as Star Ocean is one of the most underrated series, Super Hambone is one of the most underrated channels. Cheers! Except I'll be drinking a beer instead of a Red Bull.

I remember when I first played this game I convinced my friend that Ronyx was named "Smelvin" and spent 15 minutes on castle treasury dungeon because the evil shadow demon dagger I made for Phia was healing the boss and I had no idea what the fuck was going on and just assumed "Oh classic tri-Ace difficulty spike"
I think my fav part about SO1 are the pre-rendered backgrounds. I can't really put into words why I love them so much but the lighting of them genuinely feels like I am exploring this castle/cave/bio-lab. Being able to recreate PS1-esque pre-rendered backgrounds for a PSP game is just, so cool. Also Anime Star Trek with cat people is awesome XD

You NAILED it when you said you'd been looking at SO1R as SO2-lite. I played through the game once and hardly remember anything about it... I think I owe it a replay

I had no clue about this series until this video! You've definitely convinced me to play it, a difficult fantasy sci-fi jrpg with complex systems i can spend hours messing with sounds like a dream made in heaven! Keep up the good work with your videos, I absolutely love your personality and energy that you bring to each one; you are severely underappreciated :)

Finished first departure yesterday and absolutely fell in love with it to the point that i was tossing and turning in my bed thinking about how I'm never gonna see any new ilia content ever again(im aslo so mad I didnt get the Ilia x Roddick ending...)
I've been watching some of your other videos and your channel's pretty cool! Really liked the klonoa video(or at least the first half, I got out of the video when you started talking about the second one to avoid spoilers lol)

Took the words right out of my mouth. Star Ocean is one of my favorite series ever, but it’s also one of the hardest to recommend to people. Not because of its flaws, but because its so intensely a series where you get out of it what you put in, and it’s hard to explain exactly how to people who don’t already know Tri-Ace’s style.
Also, two quirks to mention:
On Scouting, and the encounter rate, it may have actually been increasing it. If you use Scouting with a character that doesn’t have the “Animal Instinct” Talent, it has a high chance of doing the opposite of what you set it to.
And regarding the Treasury gear, there actually is a way to keep it when you leave.
Anyway, excellent video! Dig your humor and editing style, and plus it’s always nice to see someone making Star Ocean content!

Love the choice of Music, I even liked the intro bit using Trials of Mana Music and Scarlet Nexus music, and yeah Editing is top-tier especially the "Smash-Bros" transitions,
and as for First Departure (R), originally I kinda liked it, but found it rough (obviously) and okay when you compare it to other entries. But nowadays I've respected it (even had a better time playing it on Switch than PlayStation) for not only "it's development story" (cause of the Tri-Ace forming over Tales of Phantasia), setting the foundation of the series (which you and others greatly explained) and yeah, I think it's enjoyable and a retro-classic that should be appreciated by JRPG lovers.

The music is one of my favorite things to do in a video. I also do it at the tail end of the project when im going through and polishing any larger edits. Star Ocean videos are especially fun cause the music by Motoi is just so zang good.
Amazing video, one of the few Star Ocean games I never managed to finish for one reason or another, totally going to have to give it another go now you've got me convinced!
This video is great. As a fan of Star Ocean 2, I really enjoyed the remake of 1. :)
So far I've only done one playthrough, but I missed most of the characters so I'm definitely going to do another playthrough or two using a guide.

This was definitely a weird game for me because by all accounts I should have raged quit it and never touched it again…BUT, something about first departure R made me want to see it through to the end. I’m admittedly not a fan of the difficulty and sparse overworld, but I loved EVERYTHING else. The towns, the story, the characters and the MUSIC AGGHHH. I played the SO2 remake after finishing first departure and was practically addicted to it. I’m planning to play SO3 more soon, but the combat system is kinda overwhelming to me. Great video, and I really hope first departure gets the SO2 remake treatment (even though I know that’s pretty unlikely RIP)

First Departure is far and away my least favorite Star Ocean game but I think this video made me appreciate it more. Also, you're hilarious. Loved the edits. Liked n' subbed.

I have never played this one .... way back, i was really poor growing up .. we didn't have much ... I didn't get a Play Station 1 until 2001and i happened across Star Ocean 2nd story. i took it home and fell in love ... still in love, I've beat it at least 15 times ❤❤❤❤
Well, I just tried the the Second Story R demo and I really liked it, and this one is on sale on Switch so this video is perfect for me right now

I absolutely loved Star Ocean 3 back in the day. I never finished it cause I got stuck and couldn't figure out what to do, but as of now I have all the games on ps4 and plan on going through them all and completing the ones I never finished.
This auto-played for me after a review of Star Ocean First Departure R I was watching to decide whether or not to play it before the remake of the second comes out and wow. This is a great video essay. This sold me on the game and your channel.

I just finished my first time playing Star Ocean First Departure R and really enjoyed it. I mostly was playing for the story and in preparation for Second Story R coming out. My biggest complaint was that I took the time to get Roddick's best weapon only for the final dungeon to have some monsters that absorbed damage from it, including like all the boss fights. Also, how do you manually select a target to attack? And how did I go the whole game workout knowing that was a thing? 😂
I believe it's the square button on playstation, and whatever the equivalrnt button is on switch. And yeah, that final dungeon was indeed kinda tough on Roddick😮💨
Marvel was actually Joshua's sister. So then they decided to allow you the choice to either keep the marvel form of Joshua's sister his sisters actual form.
I finished First Departure a few weeks ago, and although I enjoyed the very "choose your own adventure" style of the game, I started to get bored towards the end (especially after the fight with Asmodeus). Speaking of, I don't remember going through the Old Race Ruins, nor did I know about Welch's Nibelungaling attack. It's also so cool how RNG determines who will talk during a story sequence. Considering you'll die a lot, it's nice that you're not hearing the same thing over and over. Will I go back and play it again? That's a hard maybe, my friend.

Having English as a second language made it hard for me to fully enjoy what you are saying because I can't quite follow your accent. (I am not saying your accent is bad... it is just my English Skills) but I still want to recommend this video to other friends who have English as second or even third languages to hear more about Star Ocean and other games you did video on. So maybe consider adding subtitle in the video? It is not necessary a request, just a suggestion ^^;; I know it's going to be a hard work because you talked a lot and the video is long. Editing is not going to be easy.

I think it’s a victim of the sequel’s popularity, and the remaster’s pastiche of it. In some ways the forthcoming remake would have done wonders for giving this game a new face to fans of the series.
The only BAD thing about this game is that you CANT access Universe mode in the Switch version. The basic difficulty is all you can get. Otherwise its AWESOME.

They should have just brought it to a later console mostly from its raw form. Basically treat it like final fantasy anthology release of final fantasy 5 and 6 and final fantasy chronicles release of final fantasy 4. Expose NA to how star Ocean began, may do a Tales of Phantasia/StarOcean type release. That would be nice. Then do a remake.

@@Super_Hambone it was an interesting change with mavelle and erys. Instead of a choice of losing or keeping mavelle, it's a choice of having Joshua's sister be combat character vs a magic character.

I will never understand for the console remaster why they needed to add redone character art from the mobile game inspired from the original snes release while still using the PSP game as a base so now the portraits don't match the sprite art
You can still use the previous PSP art. I figure a lot of people probably didn't like the style of those portraits so they added an option.

Mavelle is actually the second best character in the game Erys is a major downgrade.

First Departure R is such a nothing-ass game. The main reason I hate Star Ocean (the series) is because, despite the title, they're your basic medieval fantasy RPGs for about 90% of their (usually overly long) runtime.
