Thank you for highlighting my boy, the Sham Hatwitch. The name has so many layers of cleverness I'm still uncovering them to this day.
I was really surprised to learn this was an authentic PSX-RPG released in the late 90s. It so has the cadence of an RPG-maker game in the vein of Hylics. The fact that it so cleverly messed with & subverted RPG design all the way back in '97 is really something, all while delivering something so sincere underneath the silliness. Greatly enjoyed learning about this game from you, definitely going on my list.
I always assumed it was an RPG maker game too. You're not alone in getting those vibes. Man they just let you make whatever in the 90s, at least indies have picked up that torch.
God tuber majuular please bow, everyone
Always love to see someone talking about this old gem.
The Japanese word for moon is 'tsuki', which is highly phonetically similar to 'suki', which is how you tell someone that you love them
oooh! that makes a lot of sense thematically, thanks for the insight.
SIR I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR THESE FEELINGS.
(JK that's exactly why I'm here)
Amazing video as usual my man, you've truly got a gift for this (and clearly put in tremendous amounts of work too)
P.S. Not really important at all but just wanted to say I recently lost my grandma and even though she had 10 children worth of grandkids (there are a lot of us) she always openly told everyone I was her favorite too, so yeah, relatable and also like, extra feels ontop of the feels at the heart of the video ❤ (we had the best grandmas)
I love love love this game. Been obsessed since I read a forum post by sn Ghaleon. The game was beautiful and didn't let me down. Can't wait to actually be in the mood to watch this episode. Glad u exist
Well thank you. My feelings on the game are a bit of a roller coaster, but I hope you like it!
For me, I had been hype for years and years and constant teases of a fan translation. Showing my friends the original forum post.
So when it dropped me and 2 good friends started at the same time and were giving advice to each other.
To me this was very much an intentional design choice and I think I got really lucky having the friends that I do. But I don't think we used the guide at all I think it was just 3 of us brute forcing and despite the game being obtuse after u figure everything else out, the pieces u couldn't start to fall into place
Man I can tell your channel's gonna grow even more in no time, this video's really well put together, and I'm definitely subscribing to see what else you'll put out in the future :p
Just found this video yesterday and have been binging all your videos. This channel is full of great content so far, you are doing amazing work! Can't wait to see your channel grow and see you get even better :D
Hey thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words.
great video, thanks for providing such a deep insight into this game. i knew i would probably never play it myself but hearing so much about it has been fascinating. subscribed!
This video was great. Hope your channel grows in the future!!!
Hey! thanks so much! Glad you liked it
i had a very similar reaction to moon. i don't know if i ever really got INTO it, but i appreciated every moment and every plot beat i stumbled across.
This game's ending is legit "I guess the real adventure is the friends we made along the way"
I think you misread the ending. It's not so much "play less videogames". It's more so, the only way you can change the predetermined story of the game, the only way to change what's set, it's to go outside and carry it with you. That's how stories and characters morph. That's how you might see some of the baker when you go to the bakery, some of the salarymen when you're on the subway, or like this case, some of your own grandma when thinking about granny. It's that connection that only happens when you're not playing that allows the characters to escape the game world.
It's not about not playing videogames, more so about yes playing them and then allowing the stories and characters to transform with our real experiences, hoping for the art to create some change, even if slight, in how we view the world, in this case, in an attempt to encourage connections with people, which is the theme in practically all the love de lic games.
Good video btw, I didn't enjoy any other of the essays going around.
Lovely video, this game digs really deep into the nature of life itself, very thought provoking!
You don't expect it to with the goofy art style, but this game has some surprises
What an interesting game concept. Sounds frustrating but compelling. I’ll probably never play it, but I like the themes/concepts behind the game that you discussed a lot.
Very high on the unique scale, for sure. I think asking someone to play it is a huge ask. but I am glad I got some of the themes across for everyone
@@prettycody for sure. I am really into games with non-violent gameplay, or subversions of classic mechanics/tropes. Wish there were more games with a similar message/thematic flair. Always enjoy when a game makes me think or question myself, like how this one frames typical RPG action (indiscriminately killing monsters/etc for example). I’d be interested to see this game get a modern follow up, at least in theory lol.
More than worth the wait. Great Video.
Thank you! We'll see if the next one makes it ~month like the others with FF16 on the way.
I loved this, and also you're really funny
Good overview video. I agree with what you say here: I've been trying to play through Moon, and it really can be a slog. Online guides may be the only reason I've progressed any. 😅
When it hits it really does hit, though. Your intro brought back how I felt when I got the Baker's cutscene. I can't say I feel that strongly about most games, even when I'm supposed to like the characters. I think that the slowness and odd normalcy(?) of everything adds to that a lot. It did for me, at least.
And yet. It is SO SLOW.
The graphical look of this game reminds me of Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland. I wonder if it's made by the same people?
Edit: Welp, guess I was right!
I got a very good laugh out of this comment, and good eye!
Really interesting video - this is one I never would've thought to play. Sort of reminds me of Earthbound, but weirder. Which is saying something. 😂
Yeah, i can see why they weren't in a rush to translate it in the 90s but I'm glad we eventually got it.
Really nice video. Will be honest, I thought at a glance this looked like another strange lost media arg game like petscop 😅
Hey thanks, glad you liked it. Even now, 25 years later Moon still stands out as a really unique game.
"I don't think that changes that this game is important for its era, but I'm gonna go ahead and speak for you and say you shouldn't play the game with the title of the video xD!"
Look to the mooooooooooon!!!!
you're still a very cool guy cody
Hyyype 🎉 you've managed to find yet another weird game I've never heard of 😂
What happened to treasure of the Rudras video
I got kind of a micro review of it in my translated squaresoft games video, but it would be cool to do a full blown one in the future. That game is great. Sadly my next video is coming along and it won't be treasure of the rudras. Womp womp.
Wait... You're NOT my dad?
I'm so sorry you had to find out like this.
@@prettycody I really shouldn't have hired that P.I. he sent me a link to your channel & the bill.
