    Answers for your questions:
    Hes talking to the bishops during the bridge. The bishops have to grab his throat and break his hands in order to stop his escape plans and bring him to dema. (those are the parts of him painted black) He’s basically saying the only way he gives into the bishops and dema is if he’s not able to create music anymore.
    The place is called a trench.
    heavydirtysoul is before jumpsuit so the point when he said “time to wake up” and took the jacket out the truck was before the jumpsuit music video. A way to tell the timeline is always look at what tylers wearing because he changes multiple times throughout the videos.
    One thing some people didn’t mention is that josh is the leader of the banditos so he was one of the first to escape dema. His position in the story hasn’t really been talked about yet but I think he’s gonna turn out to be a big piece.
    Your analysis was pretty spot on especially when u were talking about the banditos not being able to help Tyler.
    One tip I have for you is to not rely completely on peoples analysis and try to figure it out yourself the story become much more personal when u have your own ideas for what’s happening.

      Adding on to this. This might not be correct, but I've always interpreted him saying "Grab my throat and lift me in the air" and the "Tie me down and then break both my hands" as him saying that he can't be stopped as long as he can write music. As long as he can sing (hence the grab my throat) and write (hence the break both my hands).

      TheThirdErnest yea a trench is just an excavation or ditch so It’s below groundlevel. In the mv the banditos were at groundlevel and Tyler was below in the trench.

    So my interpretation:
    The red hooded guy is a bishop, but hes also bluryface, they are the same.
    In the bridge, he's talking to Nico, thats his bishops name, it's about fighting. Yeah i'll be there, i'll follow you but you have rip off my hands and grab my throat, so the things he needs to sinh and write music, where he has a lot of insecurities. Also you see his neck and his hands are black in this video as long as he has given up. as he runs away, the paint fades away.
    Love your breakdowns ern!

      My interpretation is that each one has his very personal Bishop. Each one has that part of his brain filled with insecurity and sadness. The Bishop that lives inside Tyler's had is Blurryface a.k.a. Nico. And all the bishops are trying to drag everyone of us inside Dema, we have to stay in Trench together joining the Banditos to help each other defeat the Bishops, but even if you have all the help of the world you have to fight your own demons, your own bishop, on your own. At least, that's my interpretation. The Banditos can not physically help Tyler because the struggle, the fight that we see, is all in his mind.

    • @toibiiit
      @toibiiit 4 года назад +2

      I also feel like trench is a fictional story but also e big metaphor for life and the struggle of fighting especially for tyler.

  • @nattcattt

    My personal interpretation of who Tyler is speaking to in the part where he is saying "if you need anyone" is that he is speaking to his demons. A lot of us who struggle with anxiety, depression, insecurity, etc. have a very love hate relationship with our mental state because on one hand it keeps us from following our dreams and living our lives BUT it also protects us in a lot of ways. My anxiety is a warning bell telling me if I do something "risky" then something else bad is going to happen. I see the line of "I'll be right there" and "I'll stop my plans" as him talking to his depression because he feels enslaved by it. He will just listen to what it says and it doesn't matter if he made plans, he will cancel them and be reclusive.
    I'm not sure if a whole lot of that made sense but it is just my own personal interpretation. I'd love to hear others interpretations as well.

    • @Emilia-ij8cp
      @Emilia-ij8cp 4 года назад +10

      This makes a lot of sense. I think he is talking to Nico directly saying that he values the comfort that dema offers him. Because of the Nico and the Niners video we know that you wear a Jumpsuit in Dema and that is comforting to him. At the same time he knows that this comfort he gets from Dema is actually harming him and that is why he is trying to escape. That lyric is very paradoxical which I love and reminds me of in Neon Gravestones how he says "Promise me this. If I loose to myself you won't mourn a day and move on to someone else." That can be interpreted in two ways and I think that Tyler meant to do that. Anyway, back to the point, he is saying that he will go to Nico and surrender because it is what he has always done and what comforts him but he knows it is hurting him. He is in a battle against himself. The banditos with the petals which Nico can't see are what push Tyler over the edge and allow him to escape himself (Blurryface/Nico) which is better for him.

    • @fantasticphil3863

      That really makes more sense when you bring in that the anxiety can have some kind of drawing or protecting quality.

      Nat Cat Yeah I’m pretty sure he’s talking to Nico but seeing as he’s a figurative manifestation of Tyler’s insecurities you’re basically right, the importance of the throat and hands which Earnest kind of touched on goes back to blurryface era where Tyler had the black paint on his hands and neck, the reason it’s there is because his hands are what he uses to play the instruments and his voice is obviously what he uses to sing. Idk if u noticed but when Nico made the black marks on his neck, they slowly faded across his entire neck until he starts to decide to run for it, and that’s when the black disappears, really cool symbolism and SUCH a great track!

    Literally get chills during the bridge. The way I interpret it is the only way he's going to let his demons control him is by them keeping him from singing, ("you'll have to grab my throat and lift me in the air") and playing instruments/creating music, ("you'll have to tie me down and then break both my hands."). Those two lines get me every time.

  • @HannaGhost

    And no, he's not in a trench literally, but definitely in a metaphoric one. In the song Leave The City, he sings "in trench I'm not alone, these faces facing me". That's about him on stage, fans in the audience, in the trench below him. That's how I've always interpreted it and I think that's beautiful.

  • @derekhurst9

    My only interpretation is that he continually concedes to the negative thoughts, most of the time against his best wishes, but will continue to fight and stay alive. Felt it in my youth, feel it when I'm old. Habitual thought patterns.

    Ayy I got a shout out! Thanks so much man, can't wait for NatN, there is so much meaningful lore behind Trench, it amazes me how much effort Tyler put into it.
    Also the hands/neck thing: Tyler's hands and neck are the things he uses to create art which is his coping mechanism, so if the bishop wants to take him back to the city he'll have to destroy the things that allow him to cope.
    And: the ending scene from Heavydirtysoul takes place before Jumpsuit.

    • @MyHatBites
      @MyHatBites 4 года назад +1

      This is what I think the breakdown is about. Tyler is admitting to himself, even though I tried to escape, I can easily end up back in Dema. If they need me to be there though, they will have to make me by taking away my confidence in myself and bring back my insecurities about my writing and singing (the black). It's such a twisted thing because this part of the song can sound angelic, sweet and like it's someone wanting to be there for someone, but in reality it's haunting, sorrowful and and a lament about someone wanting to run away but admitting they have a weakness that can be exploited to bring them back.
      I think it may make more sense after NatN though, because the imagery there explains more about Dema, what the Bishops want, and how Tyler and the Banditos play a role in countering that.

    There's so much here that it's hard to break down easily. Add to that the fact that the song (and maybe all tøp songs) is written in a way that can be interpreted differently by every single person. It's subjective 💯
    For me, that bridge is a dichotomy. It's that struggle of trying to please everyone, saying "I'll be right there...if you need anyone", but it's killing him to be everything to everyone. Adding the visuals of breaking wrists and choking as a pretty clear indication of being unable to express yourself (taking away the most important means of communication). I've always seen it as being true to yourself even if you disappoint others.
    Then the music. Good God the music. The bass line in Trench is maybe my fav of all tøp. Just the dynamics alone for that one instrument. 🔥It's insane.

    To me all this was symbolic of Tyler’s musical insecurities , Tyler was afraid how the follow up to Blurryface would be accepted on both a commercial and critical level after the massive success of BF(the connection with HeavyDirtySoul). I think him being afraid/hating the pressures of this new place was the uncertainty the new Album/singles would bring (pressure of following up, the Blurryface album haunting him). It is the literal “Blurryface” in the video being his insecurity and trying to bring him down in his safe space (trench) but he is surrounded by his friends/family/clique (banditos) who will always be there that give him hope and strength to help him escape from the anxiety/pressure and ultimately be his jumpsuit when the pressure/anxiety (Blurryface) attempts to take him back down.

  • @milennaregina1577

    About the bridge:
    When you struggle with mental disorders, you hate being in this situation but you love knowing your feelings enough, different of being "healthy" and never know wtf is going on. Even the "hate the pressure of new place" can apply to this: the pressure of being well when you don't how to do, this is terrible. So, Tyler is telling this to his demons, to Nico (the bishop). It's like, "you want me in Dema forever, keeping me here with this dark throughs and bad feelings? Okay, but this only will happen when you broke my hands and stop me from writing and creating". That's how he managed to survive in this world of Dema.
    And fun fact: Josh is the leader of the banditos, and even Jenna (Tyler's wife) is with them in the top of the mountain.
    The place where the video passed is the Trench. Is where the banditos live and fight against the Bishop's.

    My personal timeline is this:
    1. Jumpsuit
    2. Nico and the niners
    3. Levitate
    4. HeavyDirtySoul
    When you watch all four videos it goes like this (SPOILERS):
    -JUMPSUIT-
    All the events from Jumpsuit are one of Tyler's attempts for escaping from Dema, but he gets caught by Nico.
    -NICO AND THE NINERS-
    He's then returned to Dema, where he's saved by Josh and some banditos, to lead him to their camp.
    -LEVITATE-
    At their camp, everything is good except at the end of the MV, when Tyler's caught again by Nico, returning him to Dema. Important note, despite from the fact that he was with Josh and other supportive people, he's caught yet again, meaning that even with support and progress, we can always get caught by our insecurities or issues.
    -HEAVYDIRTYSOUL-
    Lastly, the events of HeavyDirtySoul occur, another escape attempt, Nico being the driver to that car. This is the last video chronologically because of the Jumpsuit that was in the trunk.
    Everything that happens during the videos is up to interpretation, subjective meanings, even this whole story could be a loop (this way, it doesn't matter when this story begins, just the results are important), but this is how I think everything happened :D

    Little bit of Blurryface lore here for you.
    The original Goner (theres a music video of it with Tyler playing the accordion) ends with the notes that Heavydritysoul begins with. The album version doesn't.
    This, to me, represents that the Blurryface album has always been a loop of emotions, just like mental health can go in a constant loop of determination and eventual remission but can go back to the hopelessness, but this time the remission was a longer term recovery, hence why Goner doesn't end on the same note and Trench began.
    I'd definitely recommend giving both versions a listen back to back (neither are long) so you can see the difference in the tone of the song

Uplifting music in the starting when he is trying to figure out the way to escape noticing some of them had already did.. or its just a place he has to be if he wants out of his insecurities.. that's what his banditos are for... Then the part where he says about break the hand and grab the throat because his hands write the very words which help followed by the throat which sings and helps him to escape him out of dema.. he will only give in when these two major tools will be taken away and then bishops will take over him...maybe his music helps us to escape too..😅 and then the black fading from his neck when yellow rose petals are in the air.. and then the part where he runs screaming in order to escape only falling down and getting dragged to the dema again.. until the next time...

    Great reaction . And it starts from Heavydirtysoul , connected to this trilogy. So i would say that it's multi-universe of albums.
    Guy in red - Nico (physical form of Blurryface) , one of the bishops . When he touched Ty's neck and get him under his control (in blurryface album era Ty usually have this type of black colour on his neck and hand's ).
    The people up on the cliff are the banditos, wearing yellow tape, who are trying to save him ( represents his family and friends , that give him support to get out of this control), in the end of the video Nico get Tyler and take him to Dema ( thats more like concept of prison of your mind, depression and anxiety..). And this is just a beginning.
    Also after you say that you like the production, let you now that Tyler produced hole album by himself with one person Paul Meany (mutemath).

    I’ve probably watched the Jumpsuit video 100 times, no joke!! The trilogy is a cycle-I’m still not sure how it’s meant to be interpreted, but I think of it as Dema being a place in Tyler’s mind. That’s how the videos can interchange with each other.

    my 2 cents: All the car scenes take place after HeavyDirtySoul (he's wearing the exact same outfit, buzzed hair) and he's sort of serving as narrator for the video. And at the very end he's walking off into Trench (into a whole new world, new uncertainties, new unknowns, a whole new cycle). So when he wakes up in Trench, his hair is long, and he's beaten up. He's been in Trench a very long time. Which makes even more sense when you watch Nico and the Niners.

  • @nickt3176
    @nickt3176 4 года назад +1

    Here’s how I personally interpret this masterpiece of a song/music video.
    It opens with Tyler at the Heavydirtysoul car, which we know is the junction between Blurryface and Trench, thematically. In Heavydirtysoul, we watched Tyler consciously decide that he was going to get out of the car that was running him out of control on a road to nowhere, symbolically choosing to take control of his depression/tendencies/whatever the struggle is. And, as we discover later, Tyler goes straight from the wreckage of the car to Dema (more on that later).
    When we get to the part where he wakes up in Trench, I think this is after one of many failed escape attempts from Dema. The rider in red is very likely one of the nine bishops that run Dema, maybe even Blurryface who we now know is really named Nicolas Bourbaki. Tyler apparently managed to escape the city limits and get to Trench, which is the only way out of Dema. We can see the other Banditos, or those who have already escaped and try to assist other captives in their escape, at the top of Trench doing their best to encourage him through, but like you said, that’s all they can do at this point - He has to fight the battle himself.
    With regard to the bridge section that you said you were confused about, I think you actually are right on the money. Especially when combined with the video, we can see that this portion of the song is somewhat defeated. He has been caught yet again while trying to escape and is resigning himself, at least for now, to his captor. This symbolizes the fact that, yet again, he hasn’t quite been able to break free of the depression or whatever he is dealing with. He’s even surrendered enough to his captor that he is actually telling him how to defeat him whenever he tries to escape again. “Grab my throat” - his throat being his voice that he uses to sing, “break both my hands”, the tools he uses to play his instruments. Basically, stop me from making music and you will defeat me forever. Thankfully we discover that Tyler is not ready to give up though, as the yellow flowers on the ground and falling from above break the spell that the bishop has over him (we even see the bishop’s horse get distressed by the yellow petals - the enemy knows that he risks losing his prisoner if those above are able to reach him with the yellow - yellow being encouragement, support, etc). As he snaps out of it, he makes one last desperate attempt to flee, and as you pointed out, the music masterfully follows the action, but he gets tripped up and is caught anyway. For whatever reason, it isn’t quite Tyler’s time to escape from these issues. That’s the theme of Trench really - it’s the middle of the story. It’s unresolved. He never does escape Dema during this record, as evidenced by the refrain in the last song, Leave the City: “In time, I will leave the city. For now, I will stay alive.” I imagine the next record will thematically tell the story of his ultimate escape. Anyway, I love the last shot of Josh watching helplessly as Tyler gets hauled back to Dema, unable to do anything for him right now, but working on a plan to break him out (as you’ll find out in the next video).
    Love your videos man. Your insights and perspectives make me fall in love with these songs all over again.

    My interpretation and time-line opinion: My interpretation is pretty weird if I'm honest. First is Heavydirtysoul as established. People argue if it's Tyler being driven back to DEMA or escaping. I think he is being driven back. The person driving is hooded, like the one seen here. Tyler "escapes" the car, gets the hoodie from the trunk and begins his journey to the banditos (the end of the Jumpsuit music video). This is seen by his buzzed hair in the ending vs longer hair throughout. Then it goes into the others. This is just my interpretation, of course. Others are wanted :)

    • @katstorm13
      @katstorm13 4 года назад +1

      I think the whole thing is a loop. And ok wow this just dawned on me. At the end of HDS, he wakes up. Was he dreaming the events of that particular music video? Or the whole escape sequence until he gets snatched again. And not necessarily literal dreaming. Like that was too good to be true must have been a dream. Or for some people including myself, the last time we felt more mentally healthy was a long time ago. Maybe we dreamt it.

    • @katstorm13
      @katstorm13 4 года назад +2

      Aaand now this is hitting me on a personal level. (Tyler for the most part wants us to interpret the songs for ourselves anyway,) other than possibly hearing them in a store, Jumpsuit is only the 2nd song of theirs I've heard. So, they've been here the whole time. I was asleep. Time to wake up. They have caused me to really realize, my mental health isn't going to get better by sitting on the couch ignoring it. Well I guess I already know that, but they keep reminding me. Apathy is also a really sucky part of struggling with mental illness.

    Whoo! You promised & delivered haha (not that I had doubt). One awesome thing in Twenty One Pilots live shows is that during this song, they have the yellow flower petals fall over the people in the pit. It's awesome.
    Besides Josh throwing petals, two of the other banditos are Tyler's wife Jenna & Josh's wife Debby!
    I think they're trying to symbolize the Trench with this geography. I don't know the technical term for it either because I always in my mind said he's in Trench with us, fighting to get out. Great breakdown! Can't wait to see the others.

    According to their creative team, the order of the story is just like in the videos. Only weird think with Jumpsuit is that it ends with the beginning, all the car parts are right after HDS, then he puts on the jacket and ventures into Trench during the Jumpsuit video. Notice how only in the car shots his head is buzzed , his journey has been long enough that even his hair has grown. He has a couple cuts and stuff from being in the wild for so long. At the end of the video, Nico (the bishop, blurryface) captures him, while Josh watches.

    I think you were right about how at the end of the bridge of the song tyler starts to get more confident and the video cuts back and forth between him on top of the car and back into trench. You said he was remembering he had triumphed before and came out of that place. I never thought about that before and I was confused the first time I saw this video but it makes complete sense. And just like one of the other comments stated, the end of the video took place before what happend in the rest of the video so right after heavy dirty soul. Love your vids dude!

  • @calebbuehrer8387
    @calebbuehrer8387 4 года назад

    I'm still in the middle of the video so you might say this but I think it's really cool how you see that tyler giving in is what gives the bishop power. You can see this when he sees the flower and stops walking, the bishops horse stops and has really cool slowmo visuals of struggling to go forward but can't because the bishop doesn't have power over Tyler once he decides to stop.

  • @deelishus110
    @deelishus110 4 года назад

    Tyler is walking in the Trench...while the banditos are watching over him in the mountains. Most of the banditos in this video are his family and close friends, because they are his Jumpsuit and "cover him". His wife is next to Josh throwing rose petals, and if I remember correctly, his dad is next to her. Yellow was always Jenna's favorite color (Tyler's wife) so I think that helps in the representation of what the color symbolizes because she came into his life and helped him to escape his depression and anxiety and gave him a sense of hope, just as the color yellow does in this video.

    My impression was, during the part of the song the implies giving up but the lyrics sound defiant - is he's talking about how different he acts from what he wants when he allows himself to go that route. When he's doing well, he's Johnny on the Spot for his friends and family - while, when he's depressed, the body may be willing, but the mind and heart refuse to budge. You need me? I'm doing well, I'll be right there. You need me? I'm drowning in my depression, so I wanna be there, but you're gonna have to come over here and break both my hands to get me to move on. You're gonna have to show him that tough love.

    In heavydirtysoul music video he defeated Blurryface in the night, but in the next morning we see him going back again inside the car. Here he escapes dema but also in the end he is taken back again. So both of the music videos have the same idea, which is battling with your demons is a cycle that happens every day, and by him taking the jacket (which is sign of hope for him) from the car kinda prove my point that the two videos are the concept after all.

    This is probably somewhere else in the comments, I'm too lazy to find it tbh, but Nico is the bishop trying to get Tyler (each of the bishops has a name) and if I'm not mistaken Nico is also blurryface hence his "blurry face".
    Before the album came out dmaorg.info (dmaorg.info/found/15398642_14/clancy.html) was a very influential site that had a lot of information from Clancy. He talked a lot about Dema and the Bishops. There should definitely be archives or reddit feeds talking more about it somewhere. I can't speak too much on it because I was in a different country without internet at the time. But it definitely would help, although I would read it after watching the videos. As some other people have mentioned it is better to go into the video and make your own stories/assumptions and then fill the gaps/figure it out with the top lore that is around.

    I've been a huge fan for years and I still don't know exactly what everything means because I sometimes just prefer to go with what I think it means, and not what other people tell me. For me, the bridge represents that feeling when you're doing something you don't want to do or that you know it's going to hurt you, but you keep doing it; or when someone forces you to do something and you've been doing it for a long time but then you *can't* do it anymore... So you resign yourself, and you do it, because it's what you've been taught/what you've learned to do (toxic behaviours)/what people expect from you. "If you need anyone" could be directed to him when he's at his darkest, when he gives in to his fixations that ultimately hurt him... He says he'll do them willingly, but that it'll cost something (tie me down and break my hands) meaning it will not be easy because he will fight teeth and bone. Basically, it's a fight between Tyler and Tyler, and he's just there waiting to see who will win.
    I don't know if this is what it's intended to represent but it's what feels right to me.
