Just started giving my old Yamaha 8B 677 from 1983 some love because i am getting a boat. It has been laying in storage for my entire life that i can remember and fired right up after two pulls, just waiting for some parts to get here.
Seth H How many racing records are held by Mercury outboards? Quite a few, and Honda and Yamaha can’t come close. Sure, racing engines don’t last nearly as long. My 2.5l 280hp needs more maintenance than most, but every pass it gets hit with a 300hp shot of nitrous. Now, I do have a 1960’s Merc 60hp that is on my small fishing boat and it has over 7,000 hours, still running strong. Never changed anything but water pumps, spark plugs and once a trim relay. My grandfather used it every day for more than 20 years, then my dad used it for another decade before I got it. I don’t have a problem with any brand of outboard, because I’ve had good luck with all of them. Even Chrysler/Force. Although, I will admit that the Evinrude/Johnson 60-75hp 3 cylinder engines are my favorite for smaller boats.
Adam R yeah but Yamaha isint in the racing industry they are more about reliability, but gee 7000 hours??, wow incredible, we have 4000 hours on our Yamaha, no problems yet! Just like you said spark, impeller, and we do the lower unit oil change every year
Seth H You were the one calling Mercury outboards crap. I’m just pointing out facts that prove otherwise. I’ve seen plenty Honda’s and Yamahas that didn’t make it too 100 hours before having major problems. Everyone turns out a few lemons. Also, some people try to use racing engines on their fishing boats, abusing the engine leading to a short life. Every time you see a big center console boat with 2 to 6 R series outboards on the back, you are looking at a boat where the owner wanted to show off his money, rather than picking an engine that was made for the job. Most of the “bad” engines I’ve seen were abused in such a manner. Weather it be people trying to troll with a racing engine (what kills most big racing Mercs) or trying to treat a lower rpm work engine like a high rpm racing engine (what seems to kill most of the Yami’s and Honda’s) it mainly comes down to people picking the wrong engine for the application.
Adam R yeah, but mercury warranty is 2-3 years, Yamaha 3-6 year warranty, to me that says enough about reliability. racing I’ll gladly give that to mercury, but for me and my little Jon boat I don’t need racing engines and high maintenance motors, just a reliable motor, with my 6 year warranty, but like you said there are cases were mercury would be the better engine, like racing boats
At my job over the summer we managed to break 8 different engines in 5 weeks which included a Nissan marine (new), Jhonson (old), Mercury( new-ish), Suzuki (old), Honda(old), Tohatsu (old), another Suzuki(old), and another Tohatsu (brand new). (None of which were a Yamaha)
You’ve really inspired me watching your channel. Can you come out with a list of your favorite motors? In terms of maybe durability, reliability, and bang for your buck? And one on how to detail a motor? I would love to see that and I’m sure others would as well.
I'm watching this and can't believe it, my p o s 15 gamefisher is down and can only dream about having a Yamaha and here you guys are kicking the living crap out of a working motor ,,this beer virus is having a strong affect on you guys ,

this was an absolute love hate video i hated that you abused the crap outta that motor but the fact that it still runs great is astonishing.. and that merc looks sexy!
I traded a guy for a 1969 Sears row boat with a 1969 Evinrude. I'm trying to get it ready for the Indian River here in Florida, but I'm not sure when it will be.
Dude... That's great RUclips content LOL Love it. I wish I had you up here in Maine to help me troubleshoot my Mercury 90 on our family boat. Want to get the kids out tubing!! Nothing else to do with all this Covid junk.

My names Gavin I’ve watched your videos for years and it has inspired me to buy my own boat I have one now but I really want a good motor I can’t find a Yamaha anywhere used I really wanna buy a 25 or 30 hp Yamaha off of you I doubt you’ll even see my comment but if you do please consider it I live in a group home boating is my only happiness and freedom
That’s a generous offer giving up that motor. I have a working boat so I won’t participate, but I hope it ends up making some deserving person very happy.
I was think that yeah i though it was a 9.9 and in this u said 15 I was like no it’s 9.9 now I get it it’s a different hood. Thanks for clearing that up,for me brother just watched the bass boat build up it was fucking epic man. As always u rock brother
I ran a Yamaha 2 stroke 60 through Harvey and Imelda, beating them against fire hydrants and submerged cars. Never failed me even when it got shallow and it started getting hot. Great motors, Imelda did her in but when I have the funds I’ll get her rebuilt and be ready for the next storm.
@thatboatguy Just bought a 2019 Yamaha F50. Any tips and trix for the engine? Heard u can remove a "plug" in the intake to make it a F60 ? Have ju done it?
The girl is like”why did I come with these 2 yahoo’s” 😩. But I love every minute of this torture. Just tell your friends not to smoke during filming, it’s not cool.
Well i guess Yamaha is the water version of a Toyota Hilux. Hint type in "top gear toyota hilux" and watch the 3 parts and i think you know what i mean. Apselutely amazing how much abuse this little engine can take and still just go.
I just picked up a 87 Evinrude 2.5 Hp for a small fishing boat. Do you know what oil ratio it is? Also I don’t see a pee hole for water discharge. There is a spot on the lower unit that exhaust comes out it looks like it is kinda misting out of there. Do you know if this is ok? Thanks
I do love the videos like that I worked on small engines for a while I did launch one a couple times we tried to kill it wide open and it wouldn't die so we drain the oil that was fun
This was interesting and funny to see, we "mortals" drive them carefully and change oil etc a 9,8 tohatsu 4 stroke here. But they never stop these little engines, they just go and go)

While watching I kept asking myself why the heck my outboard fails all the time. Maybe I need to set it on fire.

what did that yamaha do to you guys
Being a reliable and long lasting motor, smh who wants that? We all want the crappy junk mercs right?

15 with a 9.9 hood hahaha.
Dang I wouldn’t do that to my engine, but I’m sure it’ll hold up just fine. Love my Yamaha, have a 50 hp 2 stroke. Yet to have an issue with it.
