  • For today's episode of the musical episode tier list series, I react to the Scrubs Musical Episode "My Musical" from season 6. This episode is an easter egg hunt for all musical theatre fans with songs like "Welcome to Sacred Heart", "Everything Comes Down to Poo", "The Rant Song", "Guy Love", "For the Last Time I'm Dominican" and "Friends Forever" / "What's Going to Happen" all drawing inspiration from different broadway songs.
How many musical references did you catch?

Sam Lloyd, who played the balding middle aged man, AKA Ted the Sweaty Lawyer, sadly passed away last year at age 56 from an inoperable brain tumor. His wife had just given birth to their son when he received the diagnosis. He was working on a musical for his son until his death. The a-capella band in Scrubs was his actual band, The Blanks. In the show they were called The Worthless Peons. Listen to their rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, that was inspired by Iz Kamakawiwoʻole's version. His Uncle is actor Christopher Lloyd who played Doc Brown in Back To The Future.

Scrubs was one of those shows that always did a great job of balancing the more whacky comedy with emotional gut punches. The music was also always a big part of the show, and they actually did musical-esque moments before. My Philosophy in season 2 (ep 13) has a fantastic musical scene, and every time The Worthless Peons (The Blanks in real life) show up is great.

2:24 - Give her a break. She's used to acting behind a puppet.
7:35 - 'Balding Middle-aged Man' is Ted Buckland, AKA actor Sam Lloyd. He's one of the show's regular recurring characters and one of his character traits is his barbershop quartet, the Worthless Peons. The band is played by the members of Lloyd's real-life band, The Blanks.
9:45 - Dr. Cox got into medicine in order to help people, but as the years went on, he became increasingly frustrated with dealing with people who treat the hospital like a business and doctors that treat patients like wallets to be emptied. This is most apparent in his ongoing feud with the Chief of Medicine, Dr. Kelso (🎶the Kiss-Ass of Sacred Heaaaaart🎶). He takes out his frustration on anyone who triggers him. His main target is JD, but not JUST because he's annoying. Cox recognizes in JD the same dedication to the patient that he has and he want to make sure JD keeps to that ideal as he develops as a doctor, so he's extra hard on JD in order to toughen him up so that the unfortunate realities of the job won't break him.
12:07 - Okay, I think at this point it's clear that you are unaware of who the patient is. The woman hearing people sing is portrayed by Stephannie D'Abruzzo. She is famous for originating the role of Kate Monster in the Broadway musical Avenue Q. The roll was written with her in mind to play it.
16:11 - Interesting note about this number. During the episode's production, Judy Reyes (Karla) was recovering from a broken ankle (which is why she's sitting in the majority of her scenes in this episode). This number was actually filmed six weeks after the rest of the episode. Related: she toughed her way through the march during the second act reprise, even though it was extremely painful to her.
17:43 - This is the songwriter's LEAST favorite number in the episode. He HATES this kind of song.
    19:36 - Welcome to Scrubs.

So I’m gonna list and explain some of the medical terms used in the grease song. Credit to one Dr. Hope on RUclips for doing so in his reaction to this episode, I’m just repeating his explanations.
Vena Cava and the Aorta are the blood vessels which lead deoxygenated blood back from the body into the heart (vena cava) and guide oxygenated blood throughout the rest of the body out of the heart (aorta)
Amoxicillin and clavulonic acid are a pair of medicines used to treat bacterial infections. Amoxicillin is the actual antibiotic. Some strains of bacteria though are able to secrete a chemical that destroys amoxicillin. So clavulonic acid is administered alongside amoxicillin, as it destroys the enzyme that deactivates amoxicillin. They’re called augmentin when taken together.
The Tibia and Fibula are the two bones which make up the lower half of your leg.
The left and right ventricle are the parts of the heart that contract to forcefully push blood around your body. The right ventricle pushes blood through the lungs, where it gains oxygen, and the left ventricle sends blood around the rest of the body where it delivers that oxygen.
A hypodermic needle and a latex tourniquet. A hypodermic needle means it’s meant for use below (hypo) the dermis layer of the skin, often used for blood draws from arteries and to administer drugs intravenously (into a vein). The latex tourniquet is a tight rubber knot tied around a limb, that compresses the blood vessels and slows or stops blood flow . In this context, that causes the vessels to balloon, making it much easier to insert the hypodermic needle into the blood vessel.
Finally a diverticulitis and a barium enema. A diverticulus is a ballooning or outpouch of the intestines. If you’ve ever poked a balloon with you finger you can imagine it somewhat like that. Given how much bacteria is in the intestines, it’s no surprise those pockets of less healthy flesh are prime for infection. When infection develops within a diverticula, that condition is referred to as diverticulitis. They’re diagnosed by administering an emema (a liquid inserted up the back passage) of barium, which is radio opaque. So when the patient is given an X-ray, it will be possible to see where and to what extent the bowel is damaged.

The actress who played Carla was recovering from breaking her hip when they filmed this episode; which was a great disappointment to her, as she was looking forward to doing the episode (I think she has a background in dance). This is why she's sitting in a lot of her scenes.
But they postponed filming the tango scene until after she recovered, so that she could dance with Turk.
Donald Faison (Turk) danced a lot in the series; and in fact, an impromptu dance he made up for the show dancing to Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison" was used pretty much move for move in Fortnite .

In my humble opinion music is what sets Scrubs apart from any other show I've ever watched. I'm not big on musical theater, but the way this show uses music to convey a point is on another level to the point where I can't think of any other show that even comes close. I highly recommend if not watching the show throughout for its musicality than at least seek out the ones where singing plays a large role. I would recommend Season 2 Episode 13 My Philosophy where they have a few musical scenes, smaller-scaled than these ones, but no less poignant imo

Shortly after starting work on the episode, Reyes injured herself at home, breaking her hip and requiring surgery. Unfortunately, Carla's biggest scene in the episode still needed to be filmed - the song "For the Last Time, I'm Dominican" - and it required Reyes to dance the tango. Despite the Scrubs scene being imaginary, it wasn't changed, and Reyes had to film the dance scene while recovering from her broken hip. According to Judy Reyes, Scrubs' team was both incredibly supportive and insistent that she be able to film the scene, and they rearranged schedules to accommodate her surgery and recovery. Reyes said she was "thrilled" and "couldn't wait" to film the scene, but dancing the tango after a serious hip injury is certainly less than ideal. However, thanks to Reyes' positive attitude and Scrubs' willingness to accommodate for her recovery, the scene is an excellent part of "My Musical", thanks in part to Reyes' dancing.

I've seen a few reviews of this episode from medical experts, but none so far by musical theatre fans/experts so this was fun, and as a bonus I always love seeing fellow Aussies on YT. And just a few things I've learned from those other reviews; yes something like auditory hallucinations can actually happen with Temporal lobe damage, and the references in the Friends Forever song are medically accurate (eg, "we're as close as the vena cava and the aorta" - the vena cava carries the blood to the heart, and the aorta takes the blood from the heart).
I'm going to seek out your Once More With Feeling review because I feel like that was one of the first musical episodes I remember ever seeing. There's been lots of others since then, but that was definitely one of first, and still one of the few I know of that used original songs and wasn't a jukebox musical.

I just came across your channel and subscribed great video. I actually have the music downloaded from this episode lol.
Btw if you can get two pint of larger where you are..I’m going to say Australia? It’s an old bbc show, their musical episode is amazing.

Thanks for this. I’ve seen a lot of Doctor’s react to Scrubs, but I like this angle much better. I subscribed, and can’t wait to see more.
Also, don’t smother your kids. #themoreyouknow

That bald man actually had his own band with that quartet. It was called The Blanks. Sadly the bald guy Sam Lloyd passed away in april 2020 from lung cancer I think it was.

Dr Cox, the Rant singer, was annoyed the whole run by JD. And as in this episode, he always referred to him by women's names.

Bro, the show is great. You'd love the show and I think you'd love the real personalities of the actors who play Turk and J.D. They have a rewatch podcast. They just finished watching the 9th and final season of Scrubs for the first time and Zach (J.D.) always uses that psa The More You Know jingle quite often. It's no coincidence you used it in your reaction. It's obvious Scrubs humor is for you 🤙🏽

Scrubs season 2 episode 13 isn’t a musical episode until the end, but it is an absolutely devastating and beautiful song, “Waiting To Begin”.

The balding middles aged man had a quartet group that covered Guy Love from this episode. It’s really good if you like his/their singing here. They’re called The Blanks.

You're reference to Donald Faison's(Turk) dancings skills, is not alone, at least one of the dance moves from Fortnite was based straight up on some of the dancing done during the run of Scrubs. And if that is not making the big time, I don't know what is. hahahah

I don't know if anyone mentioned it before, but there is a musical episode to the show Oz (which is usually a serious violent prison show, including this episode).
The show usually has a narrator, Harold Perrineau, who was also one of the characters on the show, talking about the the main themes of each episode.
When filming this episode, he was busy filming The Matrix (or one of its sequels), so they changed it up to have the characters sing.
I think the episode is called "Variety", and also includes a variety show in the prison.
I haven't watched it in quite some time, it may be a violent episode (a lot of Oz episodes are...)
Also, Community's musical episode is epic, and of course, this Scrubs one :)

Since you enjoy music in tv and movies I assume,
This is just a suggestion, no worries if nothing appears!
    The Motley Crue centered movie,
"The Dirt" 2019, obviously, has a lot of singing in it. But the men who played each member had prepared by hanging out with and getting some or most lessons from the bandmates! The movie made me fall in love with Crue.
There are some scenes in which the actors were really playing and singing, in particular the 'My kinda lover'- and the 'Shout at the Devil Live Show'- scenes are some examples I'm fairly certain of!

And Baldy and his whole quartett are the Peons. They where a great a capella group. Sadly the actor died in 2020.
