I suppose another point that could have been made is Pippen's ability to play off of his man and help guard a second man, and had the quickness and awareness to get back. I was most impressed with his ability to do that. With Pippen on the floor, Phil almost had six players on defense on certain nights. Great video, thanks for posting...
I totally agree with this. This is the first thing i notice when i first watch scottie's defense. coaches always tell you to stay with your man yet he always manage to block the view of the opponent he doubled to giving up a cut even though scottie had little success on getting steals by this its still adds pressure to the player and to the game, and the most impressive is that he always manage to get back fast like you said which is harder than it seems with all the running and intesity of the game
AClarionCallMinistry the true is that Pippen was aware of the entire floor he block and steal but also Carrie the offensive many times many profesional players and couches admit that Pippen wasn't less esencial for the bulls then Jordan en the championship years
Pippen was a monster on defense. Players now a days is all about offense. He defended alot of all of famers. It's gonna be a long night for you , if Pippen happens to guard you that night.
Out of all the defensive videos I've seen(and trust me I've seen a lot) yours are truly the best at analyzing what elite defenders do and why they do it. #subbed
I'm glad that you spoke of his uncanny ability to draw charges, because my eye test tells me he was the best I've ever seen at it, but most people don't bring that up. Pippen is the most dominant wing defender I've ever seen, although in my opinion when it came to pure on ball defense I thought Jordan was slightly better. He just stuck to guys like glue. The two of the together was a thing of absolute beauty, especially when they started to press. The opposing teams sometimes looked like grade schoolers trying to dribble the ball up court and make passes.
For some reason, whenever someone says iconic defensive play, I think of that charge at 1:44.Theres just something about that play that I love. It wasn't important and didn't make that big of a difference in the game at the time but the way he shows emotion after playing defense and shakes the way he does, just beautiful.
Pippen is the best defender at his position in NBA history...and a top 5 defender of all time...but can you do a vid on the man Larry Bird said defended him better than anyone..? Lakers legend Michael Copper..
The way he could steal those lob passes while fronting the post was unbelievable. They say you shouldn't front the post without backside help but with Scottie that wasn't necessary!
This post defense has gotten me so many steals since I originally watched this vid I love this channel and the info it has provided me has done wonders to my defense
I took one write-up about him to heart, and it helped me big time. Watch how far out, and where he kept his arms when 1-1. With that big ass wingspan he was able to tip away so many passes, and was usually able to make something out of them.
For every MJ game winner there was scottie making a steal, forcing a turnover, or drawing a charge somewhere in that game making that game winner possible
He and Payton are my absolute favorites, they body people up, they chase the contact. I love to play like this as well, I don't mind to get hit, just stick and suck the life off the opponent.
One of the few players he wasn't able to lock down specially in the post was Anfernee. For me, that dude has the greatest post up offense for a guard. Above MJ and Kobe in that aspect.
He was the greatest small forward ever in my opinion no I'm not crazy if Jordan was the greatest SG then Scottie was the greatest SF who else could score 30 grab 10 rbs an dish 6 assit plus lock down all five men on the floor he guard anybody u out him on !
Easy question. Lebron. Not this Lebron, but when his Miami day He hit his prime on Off and Def during that time. Lebron now just focus on Off even though he still could play great D. But he look like lazy rn
I find it hard to think of a player I would want on my team at that position over Scottie. He did so much of the dirty work. His value can't be measured by just stats. You actually had to see him play. There are better scorers at his position like Bird, KD, LeBron and Pierce but having a Pippen on your team is invaluable.
Coach Mike I try to be a great defender but sometimes I get caught by thinking of to many mechanics could you make and video about where to watch when guarding and how to read there body to bet them to the spot?
+tigger I would just focus on keeping your back like a table and looking at the opponents hip. When they start getting by you and you have to turn and run, try to cut off their next step. If you ever cut them off, that's when your best chance for a poke steal will occur.
People over look the Bulls defense during their historic dynasty together. Rodman, Pippen and Jordan=3 DPOY and over 25 all first defensive team honors combined. Each player are arguably in the greatest top 10 defenders ever also in my opinion.
Watch the footage with Larry Bird being guarded by Scottie. You can front the post if the person have size. When Tim Duncan front Zach Randolph because Tim Duncan had size over Zach Randolph made it impossible to get the ball to Zach Randolph
Very interesting video. So not making contact with your opponent would prevent him from sealing you but how much position do you give up before he gets too good position to the rim?
***** the way I would look at it, the deeper position the offensive player gets the greater the distance between the entry pass becomes. The longer the pass the easier it should be to intercept it. But that being said I would never let myself get beneath the basket, instead I would get on the top side turning it into a one jump technique or a 3/4 deny position.
oh! another suggestion: maybe a series on great defensive centers such as Ewing, Hakeem, Robinson, Mutumbo, etc. And maybe PFs? (or just a Tim Duncan vid) :-)
Pippen is the most skilled basketball player of all time. Best defender ever and his ability to play any position and doing a great job at it. They listed him as a forward on the roster, but he was playing the point 60 percent of the time. The only point guard they would let play the point with Pippen in the game was BJ Armstrong. Kerr and Paxson were two of the greatest 3 point shooting point guards of all times. They were on the floor for short moments because, with Pippen on the floor was like having 2 players and his defense was second to none. When Bird was in the zone it didn't matter who was guarding him he couldn't be stopped; not even by Pippen. At the same time, when Pippen was in a defensive zone, Bird could not get more than 20 points. When Pippen is really in the zone, it really looked like he was 2 people. He had extraordinary instincts and is able to avoid most screens because of that it also helped him with steals. No one can play Pippen in the open court. His handles are just as good as most point guard. And, he was the best defender in the open court. He had a greatest catch up ability and Jordan was pretty good at it too; especially if you stole the ball from him. They never give up on a play. Scottie was a little better because he had those long arms. Pippen was the best skilled player off all time. Just like a few greats like bird, Penny and Iverson, Pippen was just as strong going left as going right. Bottom line, no Pippen there would be no championship for Jordan.

jr anthony great suggestion. I remember playing lockdown defense with him in NBA Live for PS2. I have some other plans coming up, maybe one day I'll get to him
i have a better drill that improves your defense (like my comment or reply if you like my drill)kinda dangerous but here it is you go to some kind of small apartment stairs with close together railings and then you run up the stairs backwards in a defensive position so being low and legs wide out and back straight and stuff. you try to do this as fast as possible and keep doing it. when you lose balance and are about to fall (dangerous part) you quickly hold your self up by the 2 railings of the stairs that are close enough for you to grab so it has to be in a small stair way or else the danger of it goes up by a lot so have your hands close to the railings to grab it if you fall i haven't fallen yet so try it i have been doing it and i have seen great results :)
I like it! Although there are experts saying backward exercise are a gimmick: ( www.nytimes.com/1998/10/13/health/no-gain-in-backward-exercise-experts-say.html ) But I think it helps when it comes to defense. The scientists saying that are very ignorant. Backward running is great for hamstring pre-hab for sprinters and jumpers, backward biking is essential for ACL rehab. Not to take anything away from the others u mentioned, they totally deserved the accolades. But I think Pippen should have won for his ability to defend all 5 pos

If I ever tried that charging foul stuff, it would be a blocking foul every time I tried it, even if I set my feet for half a second more than Scottie did, and on your example at 2:16 there's literally zero way that would be called for a charging foul and not a block in any normal comp other than the NBA, not only were Scotties feet not set for a good amount of time, they weren't even set AND one of them was in the damn air when he got hit, he completely moved and pushed into the ball handler, if I ever tried that or anyone else for that matter, that is a complete blocking foul. The only legitimate charging foul is at 0:18.
Defense was a lot more physical in the 1990s and so refs would let by elite defenders like Scottie Pippen on certain plays including charging fouls. I guess set your feet earlier although as you said when the person was in midair Scottie shouldn't have moved into him like that as it would be a charge. It's a lot more useful if you set your feet just before the person jumps because it's more about timing the charge call rather than bumping into the person as he has one foot of the ground or in midair (bit too long but you get the point).
