That's part of what separates Jordan from the pack. A player who was as dominate a scorer and overall offensive player as Jordan shouldn't have had the stamina to be so good and tenacious on the defensive end. But his desire, work ethic, and unusually high energy level allowed him to dominate on both ends.
Michael Jordan is one of the smartest if not the smartest basketball player to ever play. Among his all defensive strategies, one of them is that he puts one foot in front of the other with his body tilted at the side letting the ballhandler to go in that direction that he wants him to then he tries to react first, beat the ball handler to it and go for the steal. sometimes, instead of just trying to defend whats coming in his way, he would analyze the handlers offensive strategy , try to persuade his opponents movement and get there first. This is why he was a very smart and intelligent basketball player. He is the best.
Most people look at defenders as react to the offense and the offensive player dictates the action. Michael Jordan was great because he wanted to dictate his opponent even on defense
Michael Jordan did everything better than bird. bird did call him a god. growing up, I had MJ and I thought the fadeaway was his until I saw bird do the same exact one MJ did. so MJ just took bird's stuff and made it wayyyy better
Also he's 3rd All Time in steals just behind John Stockton and Jason Kidd. This is what separates him from the entire nba stars past, present and future.
The coaches are teaching it the right way, because from my experience if you train to the point that you're athletic enough - you'll make this adjustment on your own. If you're not athletic enough, you can't survive a quarter trying to do this aggressive stance. It requires footwork, and will. Works for me, :)
lol if Harden covered Jordan on the Bulls, Jordan would've broke Wilt's 100 points record. Anyways, Jordan is the greatest defender I ever watched, just a special player.
when the narrator asked "What was it that made Michael Jordan's defense so great?", the first answer that came to mind was "Scottie Pippen". MJ constantly pushed players to Scottie's side, which is obviously the smart thing to do, since Scottie could guard any of MJ's assignments. Mike could be aggressive on defense knowing Pippen had his back 3:04. Look how quickly Pippen appears after Jordan overplays the ball and pokes it away. Their anticipation to play off of each other, on offense and defense, was unreal.
Nestor Centeno as already stated Mj was locking down and poking steals from players BEFORE pippen came on the scene. Pippen has longs arms and bigger hand BUT mj footwork was far qucker. Mj was Pippens defense mentor dude. I never seen LeBron lock down and opponent AND steal the ball. MJ by far is greatest two-way player in the history of NBA! he made shit happen
MJ had 200+ steals 100+ blocks in 86/87 season before Scottie while averaging 37 pts. and scoring more than 3k+ points in that season as well! In 87/88 Pips and Horace rookie season MJ had another 200+ steals 100+ blocks DPOY, MVP, STEALS LEADER, SCORING LEADER, ALLSTAR MVP & slamdunk champs!Imagine the effort and stamina of MJ doing all those things both ways!
Viva La Revolution l!! 14, and I love defense, & don’t understand why everyone’s focused on useless dribble moves, threes, and not putting the team before themselves. I love these types of videos, thanks for enlightening me on better defensive stances!!
The greatest achievement MJ had imo wasn't all the championships, MVPs, finals MVPs, all NBA first teams, all defensive first teams, DPOY, ROTY, all star selections, scoring champs, hang time moves (sorry too many to put down) and a lot more.... But his inspiration to millions around the world and the most significant one, Kobe Bryant who then went on to inspire millions around the world, so beautiful.
Great job Coach! There was one thing that I remember Michael Jordan pointed out on his instructional video, and that is that when he would poke for the ball, he would flick upwards, since there was less chance of refs calling a foul, while it also catches the person he is marking off guard, since its more unexpected. I remember to this day, one of his main defensive mentalities was to limit options. So if he knew the person he is marking is right hand dominant, he would shadow that hand and force the person to go left, which is less ideal for that person. Just another reason why the guy was such a competitor. Will you be able to add Dennis Rodman to the list?
Coach I agree that MJ as well as others are maybe unorthodox in their position and they are remarkably gifted at turning the offender away from his desired path. Everyone cant be MJ or Kobe but you can train your butt off to be the absolute best you can be. For instance: work of explosiveness, use rubber training bands and cones to practice exploding off a spot reaching a point and returning and exploding to next cone.Teaches you to keep hips low shoulders forward for drive and momentum. Great way to get better...train like an animal!
I never ever liked him and of course I hat him but! In my teen and twenty time I really liked (damn hat to me) to watch his defense and how he do that. Thanks Mj for that education and the down smileys in the face of most of my oppenents that time ;) Good to see videos of his "not so great" side of his game. Sorry for my german-english.
It's good to build strength in the legs in a stationary drill, but when it comes to playing defense, as long as you're locking players down your coach shouldn't mind
Defence is about 'will' and determination. One can have all the physical gifts in the world and be a horrible defender or vice versa. One could be short, have short arms, not the quickest or jump the highest but have determination and will to be a stopper and be successful at doing so. MJ used to say that he used to rest on offense to have energy for defense. And that's what made the Bulls so great, it was their DEFENSE.
Determination is a part of doing anything well. Definintely a part but technique is extremely important. How many players do you see who practice for hours on their shot but still can’t shoot? How good would a post player be if you had no passion? I think a lot of coaches chalk up defense as a pure result of effort because they don’t know the true technique required to be great at it. There are thousands of players who try hard on defense and still get roasted. Effort is important in defense just like every aspect of sport but it does not make you a great defender: it just gives you the capability to be great.
Aye i gotta question. I'm a good ball handler, and have a pretty nice cross and shooting touch. The one thing i lack in is confidence, which leads me to pick up my dribble and make bad passes, leading to turnover after turnover. How do you recommend I build that confidence up?
I feel you. My confidence didn't come until Junior year in HS. What built my confidence was an inspiring friend; aka a hype man. No matter how many mistakes I made he would always support me verbally and in the game. So your first step would be to find an environment that can build your confidence and allow you to develop through mistakes: either a positive coach or teammate. If that's not possible, meditation also went a long way in my younger days and still does today. Learning how to quite the mind is so important in sport performance. It also gives you the chance to precisely visualize the success you want to have. So that when you are in a game, your mind already knows how to succeeded and that you are capable of it. This guided mediation really helped me out when I got into coaching: ruclips.net/video/7bZaTUCRJ2s/видео.html And you can also detach yourself and channel your idol. This works for a lot of players. Go out there and pretend to be Michael Jordan/Kobe/Kyrie... Let them take over and play through you. Let me know when you start dominating! It will come, I believe in you
If you were a good ball Handler you wouldn't lack confidence because you were training your dribble for a long time.Training makes you built up confidence, but in the games you musn't lack confidence.Say to yourself:"I WILL DRIBLLE THAT BALL.You should act like you are on a training ,no crowd no one except you.You focus on game not on that can y score, can can y get a layup.

It's relative not an absolute... You play defense square to the opponent and at ball level. Everything else stance-wise depends on what you are trying to counter the offensive player with.... Therefore coaches teaching the back-straight low stance position is correct in general e.g. when you don't know the offensive player's game.... When you do, then you decide on your stance and the rest is footwork, examples: At full court, half-court or guarding a great dribbler or non-shooter, you'll lean in like MJ low (honing in on the dribble). At shooting range or guarding a better shooter, you go back-straight instead, cause if your leaning in you can't recover to contest. I once played a great shooter with my defensive stance being square, ball level, BACK STRAIGHT and BOTH HANDS UP the whole time once he crossed half-court toward the 3 pt line (it completely took him out of his game)... Again, there's no single way to play D. It all depends on what you trying to take away from the offensive player.
I don't know if its only me, but I learned when playing against dirty players and you're using this stance, you get banged up in the head a lot and because of the position relative to the opponents body, refs have a hard time seeing it. Any tips?
I do my best to play defense like Kobe but everytime I play a game of pickup they complain of foul. How do I combat this? I'm pretty short 5'10 playing against 6 ft and up guys
I face the same problem. A lot of times it seems like they just aren't use to someone playing physical defense on them (I try to play a more physical style when they drive (hands up without fouling like Marcus smart or jimmy). They seem to complain over things.
i have a better drill that improves your defense (like my comment or reply if you like my drill)kinda dangerous but here it is you go to some kind of small apartment stairs with close together railings and then you run up the stairs backwards in a defensive position so being low and legs wide out and back straight and stuff. you try to do this as fast as possible and keep doing it. when you lose balance and are about to fall (dangerous part) you quickly hold your self up by the 2 railings of the stairs that are close enough for you to grab so it has to be in a small stair way or else the danger of it goes up by a lot so have your hands close to the railings to grab it if you fall i haven't fallen yet so try it i have been doing it and i have seen great results :)
I like it! Although there are experts saying backward exercise are a gimmick: ( www.nytimes.com/1998/10/13/health/no-gain-in-backward-exercise-experts-say.html ) But I think it helps when it comes to defense. MJ studies player's tendencies, and if he masters you in 2 quarters, you are done for the night. That's why he knows where you are going and beat you there.
Yeah. I remembered how he reduced younger players during his Wizards days.. Just watch how he locked down Paul Pierce and Vince Carter. He let them score the first half and no score on him the second half. Schooling the kids. Hahaha!
Im agree, hes one of the greatest deffenders to ever play, but in my oppinion i think scottie pippen was a better defender than him, DEFFENDER!!, not a better player, so, could you please make a video of pippen and rodman?

I'll have to be watch some Hakeem film. But I agree that pippin was one of my all time favorite defenders. The edge Pippen had over Jordan was that he could defend post players and that's something I want to break down in the future. Because as an undersized guy who has had to match up against back to the basket guys, using his post defensive techniques has helped a lot
Good video. I see you know who are the real great defender. So I ask you this, do u really think LeBron is a good defender. I think his defense is very overrated
Bums? Isiah Thomas was a dirty player but not a bum, Gary Payton was also a defensive clamp but wasnt a bum, Penny Hardaway wasnt a bum, Allen Iverson wasnt a bum sooo Idk what your talking about
@@yoitsSmitty2004 Penny my favorite player and he gave Jordan the business. I'm talking Hornacek, Dumars, Ainge, Marlie, Hawkins, Person Ehlo and all of the other non athletic undersized players that guarded Jordan. It was to easy. MJ didn't have great defense without hand checking being allowed. Plus, he didn't have to guard a great offensive player alot. He always guarded great defensive players(except for the likes of A.I., Kobe, and TMac). Please don't say Clyde Drexler because he only dribbled right.
Lol so they show Jordan guarding the second best perimeter player on each team. Stealing the ball from players who had no handles. My guess is Pippen is guarding the real threat. Joe Dumars, Nick Anderson, and Kerry Kittles...LoL
offense and defense, no excuses...such a great stamina...defending us much more exhausting than taking shots
Damn Skippy but its rewards IMO are worth it... Steals blocks making the player frustrated because they can't score

He doesn't get low by bending his knees??? Wtf!? I'm sorry but the guy bends his knees.. smh
Byron Blue He bends his knees but his back is not straight
Look at the bums he was defending
No Durant, Kawhi, Kobe, Bron, Artest, Or anyone worth a damn checking him. FACTS
@@yoitsSmitty2004 also who did he lockdown that was worth a shit?????
@@EDogg5 Penny only did good in 1 game in 1996 playoffs but still got worked the next 3 games by jordan on defense all of dat equals a 4-0 sweep
@@EDogg5 He locked down Penny, Gary Payton, Clyde Drexler, Paul Pierce and Glen Rice and 2 of them was in his washington days when he was like 39-40 years old about 3 of these guys on the list won a damn chip nah 4 of these guys won a chip: Clyde 1994 and 95 Gary Payton 2006 Paul Pierce 2008 Glen Rice laker days
Scottie pipen is better defender than jordan
I feel like his defense is overrated because back then they didn’t shoot as much threes as now
