Yep, in the modern NBA many teams don't have a go-to center and that is one of the reasons. If your star player is a center, he can often go into foul trouble and your backup probably isn't that good because you are spending your cap money on your star. But if your star players are guards and forwards you can just have 2-3 centers who aren't that aren't star players or even full-time starters, but can just be in there to protect the rim and foul when needed.
Scottie said something very important... MAKE HIM WORK THE ENTIRE TIME guys don't do that as much these days. Scottie is a devastating defense monster. If someone is guarding you 94 feet denying you the ball IS DIFFERENT than letting them score freely
Exactly. Even more important than shooting down a player is making him work so hard for his points (which many players fall in that trap) that they completely brake his team rythm. If that happens, the defensive player already won.

Magic in 91 was not peak Magic though. Far slower. Those were not the showtime Lakers of the 80's anymore. Bulls dominated the 90's because they were the only legit dynasty level team to form. In the 80's you had the Celtics, the Pistons, the Lakers. 90's you only had the Bulls and then a few competitive but not nearly dynasty level... because of injuries like Penny Hardaway, derailing some potential dynasties, and an initial strain on the spreading out of talent due to recent expansion 1989.

Scottie Pippen is arguably the best one on one defender in nba history. Some might say Dr J. I’m not gonna argue that. Defensive numbers are right up there with MJ. Could defend quick guards, Power Forwards and on occasion Centers. I think a guy averaging 2.0 steals for his career and 0.8 blocks at 6’7 knows what he talking about when it comes to Defense. Of course Pippen cant locked down a young Kobe with fresh legs starting his prime, just cause Pippen defense wasnt great vs the Lakers in the 2000 playoffs doesnt take away from the great defense he played earlier in his career. Scottie Pippen, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. When you have greats teaching the audience about the game, you better listen carefully.
In the playoff he has 3 40pt games, he just average 28/6/5 in the entire playoffs that is even better numbers than kawhi or anybody in the reg season, that is even an MVP numbers in regular season.
There was, if i remember right it was against the nuggets, they full court double teamed him but he just passed the ball that night and went with like 15 assists, they litterally stopped Jh shooting but he just used his passing skills to create open shots for his teammates
Finally somebody understands the importance of full court press. And Pippen could do it for half an hour. That shit is exhausting for the player he guards.
Imagine if Pat Beverly had pippen wing span it'll be different kinda pressure on when you can't see or pass clearly as magic Johnson and ok it Scottie and he's 6'9. Trying to get a shot off against prime pip with the shot clock running down was a nightmare.
Great strategy by Scottie actually. Shows he's a defensive savant. While Harden is a great finisher and passer, he turns the ball over a lot, and his finishing on the right side is less deadly then letting him step back from 3. While Harden still is gonna get buckets, this strategy will tire him out more. Harden isn't known for being super in shape so I think I'd bet on him gassing out before a defender like Scottie, especially given his usage. Harden also isn't the most athletic guy and is undersized compared to Scottie, so Scottie can probably also come up with a few from behind blocks using his length. Kawhi actually does this a lot, where he purposely baits smaller defenders into lanes and uses his length to block the shot from behind.
@Dawei Zhao that is a good point it's simple physics two objects cannot operate in the same space at the same time if you are in the offensive player's face he cannot get the ball no ball no score it's not rocket science
@@kingvaress7294 Yeah true teams with elite wings should definitely try to get switches on Harden. This has worked really well on mediocre 1 on 1 defenders like Curry. Unfortunately Harden conserves himself on defence and just let's his man by him into help defence, while Curry actually puts a lot of effort into defense even when put in a mismatch situation, but either way I think they could definitely wear him down.
@Dawei Zhao Absolutely that as well. However, putting full court pressure is not really a new strategy. It's also not sustainable for an entire game, which is why I focused on the on ball half court defense. Its not very typical to purposely let Harden have the lane and chase him. Also while Ben Wallace was a fantastic defender, Shaq still dominated that series. Chauncey Billups himself said their strategy was to purposely single coverage Shaq so the Lakers would keep feeding him the ball anticipating that it would frustrate Kobe into forcing up shots when he got touches. That was their main strategy although they did try denying Shaq the ball a bit, Shaq for the most part still dominated.
What are you talking about? Harden is a freak athlete with endurance to go 40 minutes and at 6'5, 230 hes definitely not undersized. Harden is too quick for bigs and too strong for guards. He's definitely known for his insane strength and athleticism, you couldn't be further off base. In fact he's so strong and athletic, he's a fairly underrated post up defender when a center switches on to him. I've seen quite a few big men try to post up on Harden in the paint and try to bully him back towards the basket only to be surprised that they are trying to push a brick wall back. The dudes offense wears down entire teams of defenders...
But that’s also why he had 40. Throwing up too tightly contested shots while his team sat there and watched. 76ers did a good job. Make him take hero shots, and shut the rest of the team down.
joe jo exactly my thinking. Teams have to choose if they want to let Harden beat them or make his team beat them. Let Harden score 70, it doesn't matter if the rest of his team can't combine for 20.
Fun fact: Pippen is currently the last of only three players in NBA history to record 200+ steals w/ 100+ blocks in a season. MJ was the first and did so twice in a row, while Hakeem also accumulated 200+ blocks. Back in the late 20th century, annual steals leaders typically reached the 200+ mark (A. Robertson peaked at 301) and blocks leaders with 300+ (Eaton at 456). In the post-2000 era, such marks were only reached thrice and once respectively, all before 2010. The 1984 draft alone provided a yearly race for the steals title between MJ, Stockton (all-time steals leader), and A. Robertson (all-time spg leader); plus Hakeem as the only center to record 200+ steals. Guards won the DPOY five times in the 80s, once in the 90s, and zero in the 2000s & 2010s.
@@riainpatterson540 Hence, Harden's current dominance. Offensive rebounding has also been at an all-time low for several years (single digit average for the first time ever last season).
Back then the centers where in most use than perimeter players. After the 2000s, the centers where never dominated as they used to be due to the rule changes change in the mid 2000s

Scottie said something very important... MAKE HIM WORK THE ENTIRE TIME guys don't do that as much these days. Scottie is a devastating defense monster. If someone is guarding you 94 feet denying you the ball IS DIFFERENT than letting them score freely
They dint have the motor that's why they get tired also
Exactly. Even more important than shooting down a player is making him work so hard for his points (which many players fall in that trap) that they completely brake his team rythm. If that happens, the defensive player already won.
They should do more things like this

If Pippen could guard magic johnson in 1991, he knows how to guard every player
Magic in 91 was not peak Magic though. Far slower. Those were not the showtime Lakers of the 80's anymore. Bulls dominated the 90's because they were the only legit dynasty level team to form. In the 80's you had the Celtics, the Pistons, the Lakers. 90's you only had the Bulls and then a few competitive but not nearly dynasty level... because of injuries like Penny Hardaway, derailing some potential dynasties, and an initial strain on the spreading out of talent due to recent expansion 1989.

Jon Dunn facts also he isn't a great defender himself attacking him n making him guard we'll help to
@@kingvaress7294 Yeah true teams with elite wings should definitely try to get switches on Harden.
The 76ers just employed a full court press like Scottie said and Brewer contained Harden well. Well played Mr.Pippen!
Lmao no dude had almost 40 points. His team didnt show up only 2 other people scored more than 10
But that’s also why he had 40. Throwing up too tightly contested shots while his team sat there and watched. 76ers did a good job. Make him take hero shots, and shut the rest of the team down.
They also just wore him out with knocking him down.
See who cares how much he scored. Did they win? Nope.. Backwards thinking man
joe jo exactly my thinking.
Steals entirely down to rule changes, blocks is rule changes but also changes to how teams utilize spacing
